SEGA Europe launched a WAP website for UK residents to visit on their mobile phones back in November for the launch of Shadow the Hedgehog. With the site open until the 31st January, the company has revealed what the “money can’t buy” prize will be.
Mobile visitors from the UK that access the site from now and the close at the end of the month will be automatically entered into a draw to win a bar of Shadow the Hedgehog chocolate. The competition is only open to UK residents, and can be accessed by texting the word SHADOW to 80880. A link to the WAP site will be then be recieved. It wasn’t all that long ago McDonalds rolled out their last Sonic Happy Meal promotion, but they are at it once again in the UK and with a completely different line of toys for the young/young at heart. The Sonic X themed toys now available are disc launchers, available in four different characters – Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Shadow.
It currently has not been revealed as to whether more different character themed toys will be launched during the campaign, however given that this promotion is running alongside of Hello Kitty themed toys, it may be a little much to wonder why there are no Amy or Cream toys.
The following images have been nabbed from McDonalds Happy Meal flash site. (Available here) Continue reading UK McDonalds Sonic X Happy Meal Promotion Begins

SEGA of France has recently announced plans to publish a Sonic the Hedgehog magazine. Announced on SEGA France’s Weblog, The Blue Room, and titled ‘SONIC Magazine’, the contents will cover the latest SEGA mascot’s game releases. It will also feature articles about other aspects of Sonic, including a History of Sonic piece featuring on the front cover of issue 1.
The magazine will be published by Future Publishing, which interestingly is based in the United Kingdom. This increases the chances of a translated edition being sold in Britain. The scope and timing of the magazine also shows that perhaps SEGA are ready to start pushing Sonic the Hedgehog out much more than we’ve seen in recent years.
There has been no word from Future Publishing as to whether the magazine could hit British shores, but fingers crossed (and editors irritated) that we get one ourselves.

Chris Senn has revealed yet even more information on Tiara Boobowski, the conceptual character of Sonic X-treme.
Flexing his creative muscles Senn, the former director of Sonic X-treme, revealed detailed information in the form of a ‘My Space’ log.
Such information included Tiara’s likes and dislike, location, and another conceptual image. Since there’s so much information within the log, ‘Sonic News’ suggest you visit the web page here: Tiara’s ‘My space’.

As most will be aware from earlier reports, the ‘Art Image Night 2005’ was a free event where numerous popular Japanese pop acts signed up to perform at a venue in celebration of HMV’s (the popular music/video/game store) 15 anniversary.
Among those to perform were none other than m-flo. Naturally SEGA’s sponsorship followed the band to the event in the physical form of ‘Shadow the Hedgehog’.
Thanks to Knuckles_X (of the ‘Sonic Stadium Message board’) ‘Sonic News’ has attained images from the event that were formerly only available from SEGA’s ‘Sonic Channel’. Continue reading Art Image Night 2005 Shadow Promotion Update

A recent discovery, made by ‘Sonic Cult’ member HXC has revealed some interesting and new ‘Sonic X-treme’ information.
Among the discoveries that were bought to light when HXC contacted the games former director Chris Senn were: conceptual art of Tiara Boobowski (which could be classed as a very elaborate spite, much in the guise of the Sonic sprites from the cut scenes in Sonic Advance 2), a small GIF demo of Tiara in action And finally a 3D rendered demo of the game that was apparently coded on an Amiga 4000 and used to pitch the concept to SEGA’s board of directors, much like the Jade Gully 32X demo would have been. As I reported in the SSMB forums some months ago, an event know only as ‘Art Image Night 2005’ was to take place in Japan. Because of the location of the event (Japan) very little was known about it, all information on the event was presented in Japanese, but using the crudest of translation resources (Google translation) ‘Sonic News’ aims to bring you, what it considers to be, a vital piece of SEGA gaming news.
The event has now passed, and ‘Sonic News’ has been able to establish that ‘Art Image Night 2005’ was in fact a live concert to celebrate the 15th anniversary of HMV in Japan, which it would seem has a far greater role in the Japanese music scene than it does in any other territory. If you found the idea of holding a launch party for the Shadow Controller at all absurd, you may now come to understand why what seems to be such a bizarre decision was made. IGN have received the controller and promptly posted a review, discussing the performance, build quality, value and comfort.
In all four fields the controller received relatively high marks, finishing with an overall mark of 7.7/10. Compare that to the score of 9/10 awarded to the XBox 360 controller and it is immediately obvious that it is indeed great quality for a third party controller. Remember the limited edition Shadow The Hedgehog PS2 controller we reported on a few weeks ago? Well after being missing in action during the games launch just a few weeks ago, Nubytech will now be holding a special launch party in Los Angeles open to the public to commemorate their latest officially licensed controller.
The event will take place Thursday the 8th of December from 5:30 – 8:30PM at the Arena Lounge in Los Angeles (11512 Santa Monica Blvd.) Throughout the night there will be 50 stations setup featuring the Shadow The Hedgehog title and presumably, the new controller. Giveaways will include actual copies of the games from SEGA and goodies from other sponsors, including Great Eastern Entertainment, Prima Games, Swicherz, Ripple Junction, and Archie Comic Publications. There will also be a special major prize at 8:30. Continue reading Shadow The Hedgehog Controller Launch Party

Gaming website Kikizo Games has recently had a chat with a few of the top dogs of SONICTEAM, and revealed a few tidbits of an interview that will be posted later today.
Akinori Nishiyama and Takashi Yuda, the brains behind Sonic Rush and the upcoming Sonic Riders respectively, spoke openly to the website about 2D games coexisting with 3D adventures, and on more Sonic spinoffs to come.
Nishiyama explained about the state of games;
“I think 2D games would be preferable for many users. I believe that in 2D games, say for example shooting games, you have to be careful of the slightest space on the screen and think in terms of how many pixels of space you have to manoeuvre.

Shockingly enough, word has already found its way onto the internet of a sequel to SEGA/Sonic Team’s Sonic Riders, which is due for release next year. This information was brought forward by Takashi Yuda, the producer of Sonic Riders whose past work spans back from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 right through to Space Channel 5.
Eurogamer were lucky enough to talk with Yuda at a press event in London, the following is an extract from their report of the interview:
Speaking at a press event in London this week, Yuda-san told Eurogamer, “there will be a sequel to Sonic Riders, and it will definitely be on PS3 and Xbox 360”. Definitely, we responded, parrot-like to the last? “Yes.” Continue reading Sonic Riders sequel confirmed

Last week we brought you news of upcoming Sonic Advance GameBoy Advance double packs, which were all until now confirmed only for their US and Japanese release. In a press release just hours ago from THQ it was confirmed these packs would be released shortly in PAL territories. The clincher for the deal, and what is sure to frighten even the most hardened of collectors is that no less than six different double packs, seven if you consider ChuChu Rocket, all to be released during November.
The seven different combinations are:

A very brief update here, and a rather nostalgic one at that.
Sonic channel has updated their site with some rather exciting content. For anybody wishing to sample the delights of ‘Sonic Mobile’, the port of the ‘megadrive’ classic ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ (which is coming to all Samsung VS3 smart phones in Europe), well you can. There’s a mini flash game that allows you to play the first level. I’m unable to tell if the play goes beyond just the first stage, of course this is due to the overall crappyness of keyboard control.
Control issue aside the game looks to be a good port, without looking at the game under a microscope, I’d say it’s hard to spot any differences. The music is great, and it’s amazing to think what today’s mobiles are capable of, because there’s no difference to the timeless pieces of music that featured in the original ‘Green Hill Zone’. However, when hit rings do dissipate after about two flashes, much quicker than the original, and certainly not enough time to grab back those precious lifelines. Spanish gaming site confirms from SEGA the launch of Sonic Riders on the PSP.
SEGA Japan apparently plans to release the upcoming Sonic racing game, Sonic Riders, for Sony’s Playstation Portable. This means that Sonic Riders will be coming out for a total of four systems- Gamecube, Xbox, PS2 and now PSP.
Currently, there are no details on the PSP version, or even if it is going to be different. It’s safe to assume though, that it may be possible that Sonic Riders may be going Wi-Fi with the handheld. Continue reading Sonic Riders for PSP

In a follow-up to the news reported early this month that revealed Sonic was to have his ‘Advance’ outing bundled into a 2-pack consisting of ‘Sonic Advance’ and ‘Sonic Pinball Party’, now comes the news that SEGA are bringing these packs to Japan.
The original pack was part of a THQ range, whereby THQ bundled together games of a similar topic or franchise to sell to the public, a GBA ‘Platinum/Classic/Players Choice’ range if you like.
THQ also added to the range yet another pack: the Sonic Advance & ’Sonic Battle’ pack

Earlier this morning Sonic Team finally came clean with 8 new high resolution shots of the much anticipated mysterious XBox 360/Playstation 3 title ‘SONIC the Hedgehog. Simply head over to Sonic Channel’s SONIC the Hedgehog page (In Japanese) to view the new content.
Not much is known currently about SONIC the Hedgehog, however given the emphasis around the title given to Sonic’s 15th Anniversary, it would be wise to assume a release roughly around that time (23 June 2006) on XBox 360 and Playstation 3 should it be available then. At current there are absolutely no details even hinting at a possible Nintendo Revolution release.

A brief piece of Sonic news here:
Sega of Europe has unveiled their European ‘Shadow the Hedgehog’ website. Unlike pervious EU Sonic sites this one is identical to that of its US counterpart, the only difference being the PEGI game rating, and a link to ‘Sonic City’.
The notification came in the form of an email that was sent to those who had signed up to Sonic City. The email contained an advertisement for the game (the first of the Shadow promotions in Europe) which when clicked upon, linked to the European Shadow site. SEGA Europe has treated those fans dedicated enough to have signed up to “SEGA City” with an interview with the producer of Sonic Rush, Akinori Nishiyama.
Nishiyama has been involved with SEGA for some time, starting off working on Phantasy Star IV and PSO and Puyo Pop for SONICTEAM, before directing all three Sonic Advance titles. It shows in Sonic Rush – a game that is very much in style to the GBA games, yet appears to break away from the troublesome level design formula that has dogged previous games. With the advent of DoCoMo i-mode phones in Japan offering a huge catalogue of SEGA developed mobile titles, and the increasing popularity of the SEGA Mobile division in the US, you’d be forgiven for wondering what’s happened to the mobile situation in Europe. An irony, given that the UK is one of the most mobile crazy countries, coming second only next to Japan itself.
Fret no longer for your mobile gaming delights, as no sooner do we finally get the joys of Pacman on our Nokias and Siemens, than SEGA Europe announces an “assault on the mobile gaming market” on their website. Eight SEGA titles are to be launched for a range of mobile phones, provided by partners iFone. The popular and renowned UK games publication ’Games TM’ has conducted an interview with none other than Yuji Naka. The interview, and other indications within the 37th October issue, suggests that the interview took place after the German games convention to which Yuji Naka attended.

It’s that time folks, time for the Sonic promotions to start.
SEGA disappointed us by allowing ‘Sonic Gems Collection’ to go un-hyped to the average games consumer, a trip to stores in the UK revealed a somber launch for the classics compilation, and with a virtual shunning of the Gamecube in even the most specialist of games shops, it’s no wonder why. A search for Japanese sellers on eBay seemed to reveal little had been done to promote the game in Japan either.
Now all attention turns to ‘Sonic Rush’ for the DS. Sonics’ first DS outing should be one to commemorate, and Sega are employing a similar promotional tactic to those used on Sonic R, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Heroes, and Sonic Advance. Continue reading Sonic Rush promotions get underway

African mountain-climbing, massive sponsored online auctions… sounds like another SEGA charity event. The European arm of the video games giant recently organised a venture called “TAKIN AGES“, a Kilimanjaro chairty climb in aid of the Entertainment Software Charity (ESC).
Three of SEGA Europe’s partygoing managers – Caroline Searle (Purchasing Manager), Tina Hicks (UK Marketing Manager) and Lynn Daniels (EU PR Manager) – will be making the climb in an effort to raise money for children’s education charities. On 4th October they will be whisked to Tanzania to commence a no doubt rigorous six-day trek through the African mountainside.
In order to aid raise funds for the event, many SEGA auctions were held on eBay featuring exclusive SEGA items – the headlining of which included signed Sonic and Shadow pictures by the ‘ledge’ himself, Yuji Naka. These items were of particular interest, as you’ll no doubt see by the increments in biddings. Continue reading Will Climb Mountain for Signed Sonic Pictures

Next-Gen Sonic is up and running. Early on the 17th, IGN and Gamespot released game play videos of the next generation Sonic the Hedgehog game, from the Tokyo Game Show. Three short videos of game play show most of what we need to know to get a good idea, along with a few new details.
Yuji Naka revealed that the new game shall be self-titled “Sonic the Hedgehog” to mark the Blue Blur’s 15th Anniversary. There is also a new engine used in this game. The engine called Havok, used in games like Halo 2 and Half-Life 2, is being used for the making of Sonic the Hedgehog. After showing how boxes at different weights move differently, Naka praised the flexibleness of the new engine for allowing simple details like these to be done. Naka-san also said that his theme while creating the games is “What if Sonic actually existed in real life?”. His theme is certainly living it up to what it stands for. Gaming website IGN recently had an interview with Takao Miyoshi of SONICTEAM to talk about the next generation of Phantasy Star games, ahead of the Tokyo Games Show event taking place in Japan.
The interview discusses many new aspects of the game in depth, including the choice of why Phantasy Star Universe was chosen for a PlayStation 2 release rather than XBOX or Gamecube: “We felt that we could reach a wider audience by moving over to the PS2 and the PC… It might be okay to launch PSU on Xbox for the US market, but not for the Japanese market. Knowing what Final Fantasy XI has done in Japan with Online gameplay, I feel that the user base is there, so I feel strongly that PSU will appeal to the PS2 audience.” Continue reading SONICTEAM Talk PSU

Ryan Drummond, voice actor for Sonic the Hedgehog in the SONICTEAM games for the last five years, has revealed to the Sonic community about his replacement by Jason Griffith from the ‘SONIC X’ cast.
In an email he has sent to fans ahead of his monthly newsletter on RyanDrummond.com, Drummond has explained how SEGA made a decision to replace the entire Game Voiceover Cast of the Sonic games with the Voiceover Cast from the US Dub ‘SONIC X’ cartoon, without letting him know about it. In a shock, if perhaps inevitable direction by the ‘House of Sonic’, the company felt that the move would maintain a level of continuity between the games and other products, such as the cartoon series.
