The Spin: 2015 In Review “Nothing Happened”

2014 as you may recall was ‘The Year of Sonic’ and lets be honest, it was pretty awful, in fact it was one of the worst years for decades which finished with one of the worst games for decades. So 2015 couldn’t be any worse right? 2015 had to be better right?

Well… in around 3 days time it will be 2016, so how have the last 360ish days been if you are a Sonic fan? Well… Urm… Continue reading The Spin: 2015 In Review “Nothing Happened”

Tomy Reveals 25th Anniversary Toyline For July 2016

25th aniversary figures

“Ok Detective TSS! Are there any clues as to the next Sonic game?” Well F4F saying that their 25th anniversary statue must be classic, press material from various licensing and toy fairs saying classic. Interviews also saying classic. And now Tomy are releasing a classic themed toy line with the 25th anniversary logo all over it…

It’s hard not to jump to conclusions, it’s really hard, so many signs indicate that next year will be a classic themed one, why would there not be a game to support that, anyway…

Found in Tomy’s catalogue for 2016 are a bunch of classic Sonic toys complete with a new version of the 25th anniversary logo. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Eggman are set to get a plush toy release and Sonic, Tails and Knuckles are also going to get a figure release with a collectable coin.

Now these are clearly just mockup images as they use the Boom figures as place holder images and official art as place holders for the plush line.

In just over a months time there is both London and New York Toy Fair which would be the most likely place for them to make their first appearance.

Items are set for release July 2016.

Keep checking TSS for more information as and when we get it.

Thanks again to Lhancat for the find.

Tomy Reveals New 2016 Sonic Boom Toys

boom2016

It never fails to amuse me when I see someone say “The Boom toys are a failure!” despite the fact that they’ve continued to expand over the last year, both in quantity and availability, well it looks like that trend is going to continue into 2016.

Tomy has just revealed via their catalogue for 2016 a boom in the number of new Sonic Boom toys. Coming in 2016 are new plush lines, including Metal Sonic, Shadow, Amy and for the first time ever Sticks is to get a plush incarnation.

Also included in the range are new action figures including the odd one or two badniks, Shadow, Metal Sonic and even a new Eggman model. But the surprises don’t stop there, Orbot and Cubot are also going to get a plush incarnation, another merchandise first for Tomy.

Thanks to Lhancat for bringing this to our attention.

Sega to Attend Hamleys Toy Parade

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_W02eseUycM

Sega Europe’s community manager just announced via Sega Central that Sega are going to be at the Hamleys toy parade this Saturday in London.

Never heard of this event before?

Well you know how in the US there’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade? Just think that only more toy focused, Regent Street is closed for the day as various characters and mascots dance through the streets along with Father Christmas coming to spread the Christmas cheer.

And Sega is going to be there!

No details were given out as to what they will be doing, just that ‘There will be a few surprises,’ they also didn’t say which of their franchises would be getting promoted, however my money is on Sonic, simply because to my knowledge, Sega doesn’t have any other character mascots/costumes aside from Sonic, also with the Sonic Boom toyline expanding, it just seems like it can’t be anything but Sonic.

We’ll keep you updated with more information as and when we get it.

If you’re able to be in Regent Street (London) this Saturday, be sure to let us know and take lots of pics and be the hero we deserve and need.

TSS Reviews: Numskull’s Sega Merchandise

numskullmerchThe products in this review were provided by Numskull (unless otherwise stated).

So odds are if you’ve been inside GAME, Forbidden Planet or another store which sells video game themed merchandise you’ll probably have seen various Sony themed products creeping in, such as cuff links, wallets and key rings.

I’ve noticed, and I always think ‘those look pretty cool’. Well, now it seems to be the turn of Sega systems to get this treatment.

Numskull, the company behind these products has partnered with Sega to produce a series of Sega themed products just in time for Christmas, and I have to say, my initial impressions are ‘these are some pretty cool products.’

Currently available to buy are a Mega Drive Key Ring, Mega Drive Console Wallet and a pair of Mega Drive Cufflinks. Coming soon are some products based on the Sega Master System, however at the time of the review these do not appear to have been released yet.

The Wallet

megadrivewallet

I think I should start off with my least favourite of the three, the wallet. As it happens, I’m actually in desperate need for a new wallet. Mine is completely falling apart so when I saw this I was pretty excited, the design has captured the classic console exactly and they’ve even included the underside details, it would have been so easy to leave the back of this plain black, however they’ve added the extra detail which is always appreciated.

However when I opened the wallet, I quickly discovered that I would never be using this wallet and felt a tad let down.

megadrivewallet2

Whilst the outer shell of the wallet looks really cool, the inside isn’t that great from a practical standpoint. Now this might just be me, but I make a point to get a wallet which has some kind of change compartment, unlike many countries which have a $1 note, the UK doesn’t have notes for £1, we have coins, which means we often have change in our wallets.

At least my wallet does.

Whilst there’s an ID holder which is useful, there doesn’t appear to be that many card compartments compared to my current wallet so if you have tons of cards, be it for cash, stores or travel, odds are you may end up fumbling through the wallet to find stuff…

But again, this might just be me, hence why I tend to go for much larger wallets with lots of compartments.

However, if you don’t have many cards, never carry coins, this is a pretty decent wallet, it does exactly what it’s design to, it’s a wallet, it says “Hello I am a wallet, I will do what a wallet does, and I happen to have a MegaDrive design” if that’s something you’re into, what’s the problem? Odds are you’ll like it and use it.

Although, you’ll probably need to empty your current wallet to get one, it’s priced at £14.99 at the moment. But that said, this seems to be the going rate for a lot of licensed wallets these days, some of which are even more.

Overall, I could sit here and praise this to death, or slate it to death, but the fact is, this is one of those products where you look at it and decide if you like it or not. It’s a wallet, we don’t usually make too many decisions on these other than if it looks like it’ll hold everything we carry around.

MegaDrive Keyring

megadrivekeyring

THIS IS AWESOME! I first saw the render of this and thought ‘there is no way it’ll be that detailed’ oh it is! It is that detailed! Every part of the console has been captured perfectly onto this keyring, there is even some small movement in the volume and power switches!

How detailed is this? You know the reset button, it has the tiny black dots on them! they could have so easily left that white and nobody would have cared, yet the detail is there. Even the underside of the keyring has the consoles various air vents and stands! There’s tiny controller ports on it too!

It’s very hard to have a problem with this, in fact the only flaw I can find is that the power text is a little off, but otherwise it’s near flawless. Carrying a price tag of £4.99 this is well worth the money.

Cannot wait to see the Master System keyring now!

Cufflinks

segacufflinkss

Now these are really cool, I have never had a shirt which uses cufflinks, but every time I see some themed cufflinks something in my head always goes ‘I should start wearing those,’ well if I do decide to wear shirts like that, these are the cufflinks I’m using.

As with the keyring, the level of detail on these is very impressive. Capturing both the controllers buttons and D-Pad there appear to be no faults or noticeable errors that I can see. Again, quality was an important factor in the design and creation of these it seems.

Now here is where personally things get interesting for me, whilst I wouldn’t ever use these for their intended purposes, as a collector of game related stuff, I don’t particularly care, I could so easily place these on a small glass block and place them inside a display cabinet, or mount them onto a board and display them.

Whilst as a practical item of clothing they’re fine, as a collectors piece they are also highly attractive. My stance on these is similar to that of the wallet, as a practical thing, it does exactly what it should, however unlike the wallet, these a much higher cool factor to them, as a collector I’m already thinking of places and ways I want to display them, odds are some of you are probably doing the same.

The price tag on these is £14.99, which feels about right if I’m honest with you.

Overall

The products I was sent to look at are really cool and of excellent quality, even if I try to find faults or deliberately look for a problem, I can’t find one, or the issue is so minor to complain about it would be petty. The only major problem I have is that I don’t like the wallet, but you could change the wallets design to anything and I still wouldn’t like it, because I prefer a different kind of wallet. But if you like that kind of wallet design/layout, it’s great, although there is no way to test the longevity of it, given the material it’s made from I doubt the design or the integrity will last forever.

The keyring and the cufflinks for me are the main attractions and the best products by far. I utterly love them both, the keyring is an absolute bargain at it’s low price point. Sit up and take notice those people who buy licenses like this and produce cheap merchandise, or merchandise which is amazingly overpriced for what it is/does. Numskull have got it absolutely spot on, high quality merchandise which doesn’t cost an arm or a leg. Bravo.

You can find these products on sale at YellowBulldog.co.uk, TSS members can get an exclusive discount so see this article for more details on that one.
You’ll Love:
+ Quality is very high
+ The sense of cool which oozes all over the place when you see them in person.
+ Fiddling with the cufflinks.
+ Fiddling with the keyring.

You’ll Hate:
– Price of the wallet.
– That wallet won’t last forever with regular use.

Second Opinion by VEDJ-Fvedj-f

Now we have a second opinion from another staff member, VEDJ-F. It should be noted that she bought these products using her own money. Everything written from this moment on is from the perspective of someone who used their own money to get the products.

After the release of the pretty darn good console-themed notebooks (of which I want to get the other SEGA consoles other than Mega Drive), Numskull has delved into a line of paraphernalia dedicated to the SEGA console line, with wallets, keychains and even a pair of cufflinks. So here’s my two pennies on the line.

Outside of the products themselves, the packaging is pretty swish, opting for the same sort of background as SEGA Ultimate Mega Drive Collection would use (only in purple for some reason). Each one has a unique blurb about the product or SEGA, and between the three I bought were references to MC Hammer and Streets of Rage, if only in the form of name drops. The packaging was a bit on the scuffed side (and the plastic wrap on the keychain a bit open at the sides), but I wouldn’t say it was major damage, nor did it affect the actual items.

The first item in my grab list was the Mega Drive console wallet, although there’s also a MD controller design also available. The material feels like a faux leather kind of texture with some padding underneath, so it seems like it would be durable. It’s a simple non-fastening wallet with the usual card slots and window slot for ID, so don’t expect any bells or whistles, just functionality (albeit with the Mega Drive logo embossed inside). The design, like the notebook before it, is a 2D graphic representation of the console, including the details on the bottom of the console as well. It’s simplistic, but the monochromatic and red colour scheme combined with the distinctive features means it’s still very nice to look at. £15 was what I paid for this wallet, and that tends to be the going price for these sorts of collectables. I would have personally put it a bit lower at maybe £12 given the simple function.

The second item I got was the pair of cufflinks. The cufflinks are metal aside from the design front which is plastic for both. These are fashioned after the controllers of the Mega Drive, one for the trigger buttons and start, the other for the D-pad. It’s an interesting thematic choice, and it makes for a fun, unconventional matching pair. It’s especially nice when the details are actually raised on instead of simply drawn, gives an extra sense of effort in them. That said, I’m not sure how much use these would get outside of novelty; the situations where you’d need cufflinks are pretty limited and usually very formal, but if you want to have some fun with it, then by all means do. Like the wallet, these were £15 for the pair, but I have no idea on conventional cufflink market prices.

The last item of the bunch was the Mega Drive keychain, but there is also a Master System one about. I was expecting this to be a block of rubber, so I was very surprised to find out this is actually all plastic, so the charm won’t be as prone to damage from knocks and snags. Despite its small size, it’s a very faithful recreation of the console in charm form. The vents, the bottom panels and the cartridge slot flaps are all textured, there are even tiny switches and the reset button has the texture painted on. The chain itself is also very well secured into the charm, so it’s not coming loose unless the chain itself breaks. It’s probably my favourite item of the bunch for how far they went in being faithful to detail, and at £5 it’s also the item that’s most affordable with pocket money change.

Overall, I’d say these items are very nice. For all I’ve said about merchandise often being a bit dearer than bog standard, you can’t say Numskull didn’t put in the effort to give bang for your quid. You might be better off with something more plain if you just want something that functions, but if you want a little bit of flair to your possessions, are a fan of SEGA, are taking part in a Secret Santa or just want a little something to give as a gift, you can’t go wrong with these (unless the recipient was on the Nintendo side of the console war).

Sonic Boom Monopoly Revealed

D4839.w300h300

First announced several months ago, there has been little information regarding the Sonic Boom Monopoloy game depite both the show and the toyline doing really well, however retailer Forbidden Planet have today  posted a listing of the game which includes price and a release date.

The game is set to be released on November 30th of this year and it’s priced at quite a hefty £29.99.

From the quality of the photo it’s difficult to see what each board sapce is based on, however from a quick inspection it seems to be based on Sonic Boom the TV series and not the disasterous videogame which is exactly one year old today… happy birthday.

Furthermore, no game pieces can be seen but money has different characters on it depening on it’s value.

Just think, soon you’ll be able to build a hotel complex on Meh Burger or stay at Hotel Del Sticks or own property at Eggmans Base.

Going to buy this? Let us know in the comments.

Sonic Lost World (PC) Out Now

lostworldalternateart

Exclusive? What exclusive?

Yesterday, Sonic Lost World was released on PC, breakng that exclusive deal which Sega made with Nintendo a few years ago. The game is more or less the exact same game which came out on the console, however there are one or two major changes.

First of all there is no multiplayer mode, there are no circus tent mini games and the NiGHTS DLC is included in the download and unlocks after you beat the first stage.

Currently priced at £19.99, however if you look around odds are you can find it for slightly cheaper.

So far the response to the game has been very positive. But we’ll probably be doing a review on this version at some point in the near future.

Sonic Runners Might Be Unfairly Banning Users

Sonic_Runners_Team_Heroes

It’s been no secret that Sonic Runners isn’t afraid to swing the ban hammer, one of the earliest exploits from the soft launch resulted in many early players finding themselves locked out of the game for discovering that they could effectively get an infinite wisp power for an entire run.

But in the last week, even legitimate players have found themselves victim of the ban hammer, in the last 7 days, we have received a very high number of reports from Sonic Runners players who claim they have been effectively banned from the game or had major restrictions placed on their accounts, the reason according to Sega is that they detected ‘irregularities’ in their accounts which violated the terms of service.

This is despite the fact that they claim to have never cheated or used any other exploits in order to gain an unfair advantage in the game. When users dispute this with Sega, Sega’s response is either completely vague, non existent, or in some cases suggests that the reps they are speaking with have absolutely no knowledge of the game and are in fact making up their replies to get rid of the customer and their complaint.

How are Sega Banning Players?

Previously, Sega were just banning players, there was no ‘well you can still access this…’ banned meant banned, the most memorable case of mass bans was from an early exploit which allowed users to get a near unlimited wisp power up.

runnersbanned0

People who abused this exploit found this message when trying to access the game. But sine the worldwide launch, this seems to have changed.

How Are Sega ‘Banning’ Users Now?

Sega are now moving users who break the TOS onto a ‘cheaters server,’ think of it like the ‘bad sport’ servers that RockStar use for GTA V or the ‘cheaters servers’ for Max Payne 3, you can still play the game, but you have to compete with other people who have also cheated in some way, this could be by using save file exploits/hacks, or a shippable bug/exploit which has come about in an update.

The problem is that being in this server/group also cuts you out of getting weekly ranking rewards and may also restrict future special events/rewards. You’re effectively banned from accessing rewards for legitimate play, but you can still play the game, and yes you can still spend real world money.

Why Are Fans So Angry/Upset At Sega’s Support?

Let’s start with the most unbelievable part of all this, Sega’s own support team apparent lack of even the most basic knowledge of the game, to the point where you have to question if the staff are in some cases making up advice to customers asking for help.

This is the support ticket that one user sent to help.sega.net.

segasupport1

Seems reasonable and easy to understand right? The game is clearly listed, details of the device and operating system are present. The problem is also clearly listed, it shouldn’t require in-depth knowledge of the game to answer this question.

So how did Sega reply to his problem? With this.

segasupport2

Lets just put aside the ‘did this person really cheat’ question for now. Let’s just look at what Sega said. “After cheating has been discovered, they will not be able to participate in […] joining or creating a guild.”

I am at a loss as to how someone can make that mistake, especially given that position that they work in, you don’t even have to play Sonic Runners, just start it up and get to the main menu to see that you can’t join, or create, or participate in a guild…

Because Sonic Runners doesn’t have guilds.

The second issue here is that Sega offered no details as to what this person allegedly did, they just said ‘our system said you cheated, the restrictions will not be reversed.’ So even if this person did cheat or use an exploit, they have no means to inform anyone else exactly what is or isn’t allowed.

Now, this is just one persons claim, they might be making it up or trying to claim innocence right? Well… that might be the case, however it’s a lot harder to dismiss this case.

Twitter user StarlightAurora claims to prefer Power Characters, so following the release of new Halloween companions they tweeted their entire experience of playing Sonic Runners using a new combination of companions with characters who boost enemy kill scores, including the moment when Sega auto banned them from the game.

After filling a support ticket with Sega, this was Sega’s reply.

runnersbanned6

There’s that phrase again, irregularities in the account. No details as to exactly what this user did, no details as to what part of the TOS they broke, absolutely no useful information, despite their system being able to tell that they did break the TOS.

These are all screenshots from players who claim to have been banned from Sonic Runners, despite never having cheated or using any kind of exploit in the game. All of these have come from the last few days.

Why Are People Being Banned?

Based on the reports that users are posting on our own forums, twitter and various other social media outlets. Sonic Runners appears to have in place some kind of auto ban function, when a user obtains a high score, unsure if it’s within a specific period of time, or if there is a so called ‘magic number’ which when hit results in the user being banned.

But every report made so far indicates that the users obtained a super high score or a huge personal best which resulted in a ban from the main game, they now have to play with users who have cheated in some way.

sonicrunners2

How Is This Happening?

At the moment, nobody can say for sure, but some people are pointing the finger at Sega’s own events.

Currently there is a Halloween event taking place and one of the companion rewards ‘King Boom Boo’ is apparently very broken, especially when paired up with a power character who offers an enemy destruction bonus, like Halloween Omega.

For example, before Halloween, a good player might be able to hit the 1 million point mark by the time they reached the first Eggman boss fight. Following the Halloween Event, due to the nature of the new Halloween Companions bonuses, it’s possible for a novice player to get over 3 million points in the first 3 seconds of the game. You can imagine how much an expert player can get in a 30min long game.

But the madness doesn’t end there. On top of this, there is/has been a 2X ring event, so scores are going even higher and with new characters/companions who boost ring scores, they too are falling victim to the ban hammer.

The problem here according to some long term Sonic Runners players, is that the new companions are so badly balanced, combined with the new character bonuses, that they’re obtaining mega high bonuses/huge amount of points in a short period of time, that the game things they are cheating and as a result they are being put into the cheaters server and are restricted from reviving weekly rewards from their rightful ranking board.

Despite claiming that they have never cheated or broken the TOS in any way.

How Can You Prevent an ‘Unfair Ban?’

With Sega’s support offering no help or even any indication as to what exactly players have done to break the TOS, many users who have found themselves in the cheaters server are advising other users not to use any new companions or characters, some are going as far to deliberately keep their scores below 10 million which seems to be a safer means to play the game long term.

However the key here is Sega, they need to be a lot more open with exactly what is going on in Sonic Runners and be much more open with how players have apparently broken the TOS because right now many players are baffled as to what it is they did wrong.

We’ll keep you upto date with any new information as and when we get it.

Dare I ask if anyone reading this has found themselves victim of the Runners ban hammer? Let us know in the comments.

This is the first thing which came into mind when I read the interview which has inspired me to write this.

Given the reaction from the community, I think it’s worth talking about. At least I’d like to talk about it, mainly because I for one am in the odd position of… not entirely knowing what to think about it, well actually, that’s a small lie. I do but, each time I try to get either angry or ‘oh good on Sega’ I start to think more about it and basically come to the mindset of, ‘yeah yeah…’ Or something which Sega has been doing a lot lately which I’m calling ‘words‘.

Hardlight Studios Hosting a Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom Periscope Session

Sonic Dash 2 CROP

To celebrate the worldwide launch of Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom, Hardlight Studios will be hosting a Periscope session by one of the sound designers on the game.

I’d like to alert you in advance to a Periscope session scheduled for tomorrow at 10:30 am PST (10/21), hosted by one of Hardlight Studios’ sound designers who worked on Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom. He’ll be treating fans to a live guitar performance of several original scores from the game, closing with the widely loved Green Hill Zone theme.

The livestream will be going on via the official Sonic the Hedgehog twitter account: Whilst the press release says ‘Tomorrow’ it also lists October 21st as the date which is in fact Wednesday so we’re not sure what’s going on there.

More 25th Anniversary Licensing Details Discovered at BLE 2015

ble-25th04

We’ve had a few items up this week regarding Brand Licensing Europe, but one thing we’ve not yet told you all is that we actually had someone at Brand Licensing Europe to check out the various booths, the reason being is that in the past not many websites/blogs bother to take pics or cover the Sega booth, so we sent our own guy, despite this year being odd in that Sega decided to advertise their own booth on twitter, our guy was able to take some additional photos and provide some new information.

ble-25th02

The 25th Anniversary area simply had t-shirts, including two of Sonic himself (one being the box art of Sonic 1). On the other side of that wall was a sketch of a Classic Sonic ‘get ready’ pose, with an interesting little ‘GOTTA GO FAST’ logo featuring AoStH Sonic at the bottom. I tried to snag a look inside those Sonic bags that people were toting around, but all I could see was promotional material picked up from other booths.

Elsewhere in the booth, there were a few new Sonic Boom renders plastered about and the television was showcasing various trailers of season 1 of the Sonic Boom cartoon and SEGA properties like Football Manager and Total War. There were t-shirts to go with these, but you have already published photos of them on the site.

The Christmas Sonic jumper was also there; although it was difficult to get a good picture of it because people were often walking past or huddled in front of it. There is also a bag at the front (bottom right) of the image, as well as a couple of other jumpers and an Ecco t-shirt at the back, but again, people persistently positioned their bodies in inconvenient places.

Looking at the images from our correspondent myself. It would appear as if Sega are not only heavily pushing active franchises, but there is also a big desire to push what seems to be dubbed ‘The Retro Collection’

blecard02

Alex Kidd, Alien Syndrome, Altered Beast, Ecco, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Shinobi are all listed as being licenses up for grabs. That’s quite a wealth of content right there! Would love to own some more Streets of Rage stuff, just hope that also includes Streets of Rage 2 & 3 and not just the first game.

But let’s bring it back to Sonic for now, in the last few months since we first saw the 25th Anniversary logo, we keep seeing words like ‘Classic’ and ‘Heritage’ being branded about. This is the first time that we have seen the 25th Anniversary logo and some of the promotional material for it in close and clear proximity.

blecard06

The use of the classic Sonic as a sketch, that to me screams of origins/early creation, then we have the leaflet all of what appear to be T-Shirt design, notice how they are all classic era designs. No sign of any modern Sonic, or any other modern character for that matter.

Sadly there are still no clues on the content for the next big Sonic game, however with Sega promoting the 25th as being classic and heritage based and also confirming that they are intending to celebrate it, to not have a game which ties into this seems like a missed opportunity.

Very special thanks to SSMB member Pawn for the photographs and report.

Sega’s Booth At Brand Licensing Europe: 25th Anniversary & Boom Spotted

ble2015booth1More Brand Licensing news, several images of Sega’s booth have been posted on twitter by none other than Sega’s own Tadashi Takezaki!

The booth appears to at first be very Sonic Boom heavy, however there are other Sega games around the outside of the booth including a ‘retro collection’ area.

However, eagle eyed readers may also find the image at the top of this article of interest, we can see the 25th anniversary logo again but this one is on a mural of classic Sonic and Eggman from Sonic 1. Is this a further clue as to the tone/nature of next year?

But more interestingly… is the fact that it was Tadashi Takezaki who took these images in the first place, in previous licensing events, both in Europe and the United Stages, it’s normally the local staff who handle and run the event, this is the first time that someone from Sega of Japan has been brought over to oversee an event. Dare I suggest that there is something of high importance at Brand Licensing Europe which he has gone over to oversee?

You can see the rest of the images in the gallery, keep checking TSS for more updates as and when we get them.

UPDATE: Sonic Boom Amy & Tails Official Mascot Costumes Spotted at BLE 2015

UPDATE: A new photo has been discovered.

boommascots

ORIGINAL STORY: boomble

Well we’ve had Sonic, so why not Tails & Amy too?

London’s Brand Licensing Europe 2015 is under way and Sega are attending the event and it would appear that they are trying to sell more Sonic Boom licenses. Well to aid them with this, it would appear that the Sonic Mascot is now joined by Tails and Amy.

In a picture posted to twitter by twitter user Ahrani of the show floor, the photo caught a glimpse of Sega’s booth, if you look closer (you may need to check the original tweet itself for the best quality), you can make out Amy & Tails mascot characters.

This would be the first time Amy & Tails have been seen in their Sonic Boom designs as mascot characters. In fact it might be the first time that Amy has ever appeared as an official costume and Tails’ last outing was way back in the mid 90’s.

So if you thought that Boom would be going away, better think again, you don’t spend a small fortune on costumes like this if you intend to shelf it soon within a year.

Odds are more information will come to light in the next few days, keep checking TSS for more information as and when we get it.

Sonic Boom Season 2 Confirmed

Every year, TV show people meet up in Cannes for the annual MIPCOM event, it’s basically a place where broadcasters go in order to secure the rights to show various TV shows around the world on various networks.

Well, according to the company LER who aside from one or two nations, distributes Sonic Boom around the world, Season 2 of Sonic Boom has started production. Continue reading Sonic Boom Season 2 Confirmed

Sonic Runners To Get Major Bug Fix & Raid Boss?

runnersraidbossSonic Runners continues it’s steady stream of event announcements with a halloween themed event centred around Zazz. However, this event is unlike any previous events held in Sonic Runners so far.

Typically, players have been asked to rescue animals or collect certain special items in a bid to get various rewards. However this new event appears to be very different as it’s described as a ‘raid event.’

runnersraidboss2

Roughly translated the text warns players of a ‘strong enemy Zazz Raid,’ traditionally, raid enemies are powerful enemies which drop a huge number of rewards when defeated.

However that’s not the only announcements, details of the next version of the game have also been posted and two major bugs, one of which we posted details about as well as a fix back at the start of August, might finally be fixed. That being the clear cache bug.

runners.1.4

As it stands right now, Sonic Runners doesn’t remove any old event data or notification data, even if it’s totally worthless. e.g. notifications with dates on them. This means that if you have had the game since day 1 and never performed any maintenance, then the game is actually storing nearly 2GB+ if you have never cleared the cache/redundant memory files from the game.

Well it appears that there will now be an option in the game to actually perform this task without having to connect your device to a computer and manually doing it.

It also seems that Facebook options/settings will also be enabled in this version too.

It’s expected that this update will come within the next week or two.

The Spin: Maybe We Need A Better Way To Talk About Sonic Games?

spin

Disclaimer: The views in this piece may not reflect the views of TSS or other writers on the staff team. The intention of The Spin is to promote debate and discussion of an issue or something that’s happening in the fandom or the world of Sonic.

So the last time I did an instalment of the Spin, one user got so angry he wrote 4 whole lines of abuse on Tumblr, but panicked and deleted the post after it was pointed out that what he wrote and accused me of wasn’t exactly what I had said at all, and instead just wrote a whole 1 line about why he now doesn’t like the site… ok then. In fact one or two people got angry at the notion that I dared to suggest that people should not rush out and pre-order stuff when you know nothing about the product and how people shouldn’t be just saying “Whoa good on Sega for delaying a game!” and ask “Exactly why has it been delayed? Show us what’s wrong with it so we can see your improvements.”

So today, we’re all going to do a Big the Cat, we’re going to relax. We’re going to chill, we’re going to talk about language, and specifically, how we describe/talk about Sonic games.

I’d like to quote for you a number of things which I’ve read both recently and in the past over a number of different forums, odds are visit any site which has an active Sonic discussion and it won’t take you very long to read something like it, to save embarrassment I’m not going to directly link to these, but really do you need that? Odds are you’ve seen stuff like this from time to time, in fact just visit the Sega forums or GameFAQ’s forums, odds are you’ll find something very similar.

I want a new Sonic game which takes the adventure formula, polishes it, brings back crush 40 and adds exploration elements!

Here’s another.

I want a Sonic game which just focuses on Sonic, Tails and Knuckles! It’s gotta be linear with multiple paths and mustn’t have puzzles!

And another….

I want a game which takes the adventure formula and builds on it!

And just for fun one more

I want a Sonic game which brings back the edge! Sonic must be edgy again! That’s why he was popular in the 90’s! When I first played Sonic it wasn’t like Mario! That’s why I like Sonic

Incidentally, that last guy was born in 2001…. Do the age math.

Anyway, am I the only one, who doesn’t really understand what all those people want? Would I be completely wrong in saying ‘I bet you don’t even understand what you want?’

Despite what many people think, when it comes to describing videogames, there is no universally agreed terminology or language structure. I’m sure you’ve all heard terms like polish, mechanics, flow, linear, open world, sandbox etc etc right? Well… around 20 years ago, two developers whose name escapes me right now, noticed that there was no language to describe game development so they tried to apply some terms and phrases to try and help communicate what it was that they did in order to aid development.

But these terms were never formally recognised and they never have been.

Think of it this way.

I can remember first playing Sonic 1, getting to Robotnik and saying out loud “Oh it’s the boss!” but before that, I don’t remember playing games which specifically used the word ‘boss’ to describe an end of level boss, I never collected magazines at this time which said ‘boss’ but I still called it that. Why?

dropthecriterseggman

Well, odds are it was because from other media, such as comics, cartoons and other TV shows, boss was a word used to describe the man in charge, or in the cases of comics and cartoons, a big foreboding person who was powerful and in charge. So it made sense to call it a boss, and to this day we call these fights ‘boss battles.’ But is that right? Are they really a strict definition of what a boss actually is? Think of a game like Dark Souls or Bloodborne where the boss fights are giant monsters, demons or other hunters like the player.

If we look at the definition of what a boss is, no it’s not right, but in gaming culture, it’s absolutely right!

In case you’ve not realised it yet. What we do when it comes to describing games and the culture is to take pre-existing words and try to apply them to the world of games. Polish, mechanics, flow etc, are all pre-existing words with pre-existing definitions, we’ve taken them because it best helps to describe the structure of a computer game, but because these words have all these pre-existing definitions, the interpretation of them can often be twisted or changed based on a persons own baggage or use of language.

Now over the last 20 or so years, both gamers and developers have used these words and built up some kind of understanding, for instance, when we say ‘this game has good flow and pace’ we all sorta understand that it means that the game seems to run or move along at a pace which doesn’t mean that the player becomes bored, but even then we can go deeper with that analysis, is it because the player is going through sections where nothing is happening? Or is there too much happening and it’s becoming dull? Or is the inaction not as engaging as it was previously?

But that said, there is still no defined universally agreed definitions for such terms. There’s a really close to home example here, in the last instalment of The Spin, I talked about the use of the word polish and how it was a term used to mainly describe aesthetics, well some people said “No I use it for bug fixing,” now from my experience and even from making my own games, I would never use the word polish to describe bug fixing, I would call it exactly that, bug fixing, or bug hunting, never polish, but some people do.

Nothing wrong with that, we’re just using the same word which has no defined or agreed term to describe problems with a game that need correcting.

Exploring

Sonic Colours Green Hill Zone

Now lets chat about Sonic, and everyone’s favourite subject, Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice. Something I have seen fans say about Fire & Ice and even the developers is the following line.

There is a lot less exploration than the last game.

What does that say to you? Think about it, exactly what do you mean about exploration when you hear that? Now try to contextualise it in a Sonic game, are you thinking about something like Unleashed and finding those sun and moon medals? Are you thinking Classic Sonic eras with hidden items in walls? Or going down seemingly dead end paths which offer the player a reward with items (think that Marble Zone wall with the extra life and rings)?

There’s quite a difference with both those.

I ask you to think about that because this is a quote from the original Sonic Boom Fire & Ice announcement.

The new title also delivers gameplay that enables players to run through the game at top speed, or take their time with deeper exploration and puzzle play.

Does this mean that exploration is optional? That it’s like Sonic 1 in which you are only penalised by lack of lives or point rewards? Or that it’s like more recent games in which you have to explore in order to either progress or get some kind of final unlock?

See the issue. The word exploration can be taken to mean a multitude of things when it comes to Sonic. If we think about the original Green Hill Zone, there is exploration to be had in that, we can take different paths which offer different experiences, but all roads eventually lead to the goal.

However, if we look at exploration in more recent games, it means going out of our way to find objects and other things to unlock stuff, some may argue that this should be called ‘collecting’ but since a lot of the time these collectables are hidden away or placed in these hidden areas, we can also apply the term exploration here too.

Sometimes, these exploration segments are required to progress, other times it’s to unlock key items or rewards, the exploration is not a natural curiosity, but a forced mechanic devised on the player.

Then we have games like Sonic 3 & Knuckles or Sonic 2 & Knuckles, games which reward player for exploring with unique character abilities, for instance, I can’t climb this wall with Sonic or Tails, but with Knuckles I can, there’s an extra life up here. Also, I can’t jump or glide over to that platform, but as Tails I can, there’s another reward here.

So in this instance, one word can mean a multitude of different possibilities, some reward for natural curious gameplay, a forced mechanic required for progression, or a device for rewarding unique play styles.

As a fandom, we don’t have an agreed definition as to what ‘exploring’ means, then when a game comes out which offers ‘exploring’ depending on the level and complexity of that, it can often backlash for the majority because it’s different/not what they wanted or expected.

The description also mentions puzzles, puzzles are another thing which we can’t seem to agree on. Everyone remembers that puzzle in Sonic 4 Episode 1, mainly because of how awful it was to do, nobody wants that back, and if you do… why? Same with Silver and his balls, but even some of the classics had some stuff which you could argue required you to think, remember those segments where you endlessly fell and had to jump off at the right spot? Not the most advanced thing, but it existed.

Then the Adventure games came and we had a lot of puzzle elements, ranging from a door password, to navigating a maze like area.

Now we have, swap out a character to use a special ability to push a switch then switch back to another character to run through the door.

What do we want or expect when we talk or hear about puzzles? There’s a lot here which can apply.

That Adventure Style Thing

Sonic-Generations-3DS-Emerald-Coast-Screenshot
How many times are we going to see this?

If you’ve been on any Sonic forum, odds are you’ve seen this said in some way.

The adventure formula.

I have what I think is a reasonable question… Do we actually all agree as to what it means? Please don’t go to a random Facebook campaign group and quote what the group admin thinks it means, what does it actually mean to everybody?

This phrase is often used to describe the Dreamcast Sonic games, but which ones? Let’s be honest here, on the surface, Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 are really different, you have to get to really deep levels of analysis before you notice that they’re similar. So what are we talking about?

Even if we take away the most basic aspects of how Sonic in Sonic Adventure works, we can easily argue that up until around Sonic Generations, this hasn’t really changed or gone anywhere, lets be real here, Sonic 06 attempted to be some kind of glorious mess of an SA remake, we’ve got Wales, we’ve got Egg Carriers, we’ve got all this other stuff from SA which people had been asking for a return to… just one problem, the game is a tragic mess.

So wait, that doesn’t count? …Urm… well, actually.

Some people will argue tooth and nail that Sonic 06 isn’t using the SA formula, even though when you look at something as basic as ‘how do I play this/how does it work’ it’s very similar in some areas, and the same in the others. But because it lacks a chao garden and is terrible, and it is terrible, if you think it isn’t you’re wrong, yes you are, it therefore according to many doesn’t count because it lacks these added features which both the original SA’s had. How many times do you have to say that before it sounds a little silly?

So what exactly does ‘Adventure formula’ mean if we’re happy to apply it to SA 1 and SA 2, but not fine with applying it to Sonic 06? I’ve seen some say ‘well it has no chao’ urm… what? That has nothing to do with the core gameplay, that is an extra mode which some don’t bother with which has nothing to do with what makes the SA games somewhere between good and great games.

Lets think back to one of the original quotes.

I want a game which takes the adventure formula and builds on it!

But they’ve done that, they’ve been doing that for the best part of 10 years. Even Sonic Heroes which started off life as SA 3 still has elements of what the basics of SA is, however when we move onto Sonic 06, whilst it’s a complete mess of a title, how is that not taking the adventure formula and trying to do something else with it?

Sonic Generations Planet Wisp Screenshots 25

Unleashed and Generations. Pretend your boost button is broken, same question, however here we have gameplay and level design which means that the gameplay requires the use of the boost button, so whilst we’re still building on the SA era gameplay and methodology, we have built upon it in some radical way.

Yet still people say ‘we should go back to the adventure formula’ or ‘we should build on it’ or ‘we should polish it’ but… we have been? Right? I mean, that camera for one thing is so much better these days than it used to be, we have levels which get bigger in scale which still try to push hardware. Or is what we’re really asking for is ‘we want a game ‘exactly’ like one of the first Adventure games?’

Dark & Edgy Kids

sonic the hedgehog gray silhouette xbox sonic ps3 game sega 1920x1200 wallpaper_www.animalhi.com_76

At some point, someone decided that Sonic should be dark, then at some point after that, someone decided Sonic should be edgy, and at some point, some people started using that to describe what games should be like.

What happened here?

I think again it goes back to Sonic Adventure and to another point Sonic Adventure 2, for years we had games which were basically the bad guy did something bad and then he started to… … … you know what… no, let’s talk about this in another instalment of The Spin.

In this section, I want to write here about how some fans often use the words’ dark and edgy’ to somehow describe games, yet whilst on the one hand some fans are saying SA 2 is a dark game, then a few months later out comes Silent Hill 2. But I think there’s a more interesting discussion to that, so let’s park that for now and go back to our big blue hedgehog chasing a giant Eggman as flowers bounce around him which totally isn’t a kids game.

As for the edge, we can laugh about the use of that word in another instalment. For now enjoy this related video.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbHSinGGvQY

I think I’m going to leave it there for now, not a huge in-depth look at language, but a starting point. What about the rest of you, ever seen someone describe a Sonic game or even Sega themselves describe how a game should be and then it’s nothing like how you interpret that?

Also feel free to vote on the next subject that I should talk about, again this doesn’t set the next one in stone, just gives me an idea where to go with these.

GE Entertainment Announces A Super Shadow Plush

supershadowplush

IT’S NOT EVEN BEEN A WEEK!

Well, there’s no stopping GE Entertainment is there, surprising everyone since they haven’t even teased this, GE have announced a new plush to their Sonic line, and as before it’s one which has never been released in a plush form before.

Super Shadow!

Thats right, Ow the Edgehog, as many call him, will soon be available in his super form for the first time ever. Plush stands at 10 inches tall, no pricing or release date yet, as is usual with these things.

And once again you’ll have to resort to Ebay/Amazon sellers in order to get one… no I don’t understand why this is still a thing either.

So Blue Believers what do you think of this? Like it? Hate it? Needs more Edge? Let us know in the comments.

G.E. Entertainment Reveals Their Vector Crocodile Plush

Vector

It’s not even been a month! GE Entertainment contnues to make our wallets hurt, this time it’s Vectors turn to get the reveal.

As usual, no details on pricing yet, but size wise this thing is a huge 14 inches tall! Exact release date hasn’t been announced, but the fact it’s on their website suggests it’s on the way, odds are they’ll release Blaze and Vector around the same time like they did with Big & Espio

As with many of their plushes, this is the first time that Vector has ever been in a plush form (officially).

As always, only Ebay & Amazon sellers will stock these.

Edit: You know, these things are so regular I’m half tempted to just write a template and fill in the missing details when a new one is announced/revealed.

BBC: All Stars Racing Transformed Improves Your Memory & Concentration Skills

ASR Transformed Xbox.com screenshots 12

This is the kind of story which always seems to come up at least once every year or so, but it’s always nice to see.

Last night BBC 2’s Horizon was entitled “Are Video games Really That Bad?” It was a really good, non sensationalist look at videogames and how they influence you, because lets be honest here, they do.

It was a fascinating insight into gaming, especially the part of the show which showed how one videogame was improving the quality of keyhole surgery and some doctors are now playing games as they feel it’s improving the quality of their care.

However, more closer to home was the segment near the end of the show, they wanted to test how games influence non gamers, so they got together a group of pensioners who don’t play games, and asked them to do a series of tests involving memory and concentration, they then asked them to play Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed for 20 min per day, for 5 weeks.

After which they performed the same tests and according to the results, their memory and concentration skills had all improved by 30%.

So there you have it, you now have a medical reason to play ASRT, but honestly you should be playing it because it’s a bloody good game. Can we have a third one now please?

You can watch the show on BBC’s iPlayer for the next month. Those outside of the UK may need to fiddle with their location settings/proxi time.

Now where did I put my keys…?

Now then, I should be talking about based on this poll the language we use to talk about Sonic games, specifically, in that how we talk about them right now probably isn’t doing ourselves and favours. But more on that later.

Sonic Runners: How to Land on Whatever Spot You Want on The Roulette Wheel!

Ever since Sonic Runners first launched, users have been divided as to how if there is a way to manipulate the roulette wheel, for instance, tapping the screen whilst it’s rotating seems to influence when it will stop, but nobody was able to nail down a precise method to stop it at will or at a specific point.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pG3hsGYEzyo

Well it seems that those who were convinced that there was a way to manipulate the wheel so that it stops in a specific spot were right. A YouTube video posted by Premydaremy illustrates the trick in action, in the video the user is able to land the wheel on the character spot at will, multiple times in a row.

Now, the user calls this a ‘hack,’ however this isn’t correct, a hack would be the right terminology to use if you had to manipulate the games code or use some kind of modification to perform this. Call it a cheat or a trick at the most, however given how we’ve been able to make the wheel stop early since the soft launch, this seems to be deliberate behaviour left on the wheel from the developers.

There are two methods to doing this, I have managed to get the first method to work exactly as show in the video, the second method didn’t work at all.

Method 1:

  • Spend 50 red rings and let the wheel start to spin.
  • On the first spin, when the dial reaches the 6 O’clock position on the wheel tap once.
  • Then on the second spin, rapidly tap the screen/wheel with your finger.
  • If done correctly, you will land just inside the character egg space.

Method 2:

  • Spend 50 red rings and let the wheel start to spin.
  • Let the wheel complete 2 full rotations.
  • On the third rotation, when the dial reaches 6 O’clock, rapidly tap the screen again.
  • If done correctly, you will land just inside the character egg space.

In both methods, odds are you will land on either the character egg or the golden eggs. I have tested method 1 and it worked first time. However as pointed out this is not a 100% guarantee, but from feedback from other users and my own testing, this seems to work most of the time after you’ve mastered the trick.

Whilst this trick is designed to work for the character and golden eggs, odds are if you adjust the timing as to when you first tap the screen, you can manipulate the wheel to land on whatever spot you want, including the daily spin wheel.

Give it a try and let us know if it works in the comments.

Sonic Boom Fire & Ice to Get Fast Food Toys

sonicboomfireicecarlfastfoodAccording to a ‘now deleted’ tweet by the CDM company, Sonic Boom Fire & Ice toys are on the way to Carls Jr. and Hardee’s. For those who don’t live in the US, that’s a burger/fast food chain.

The exact tweet was as follows.

Meal bags are in! Sonic Boom Fire & Ice is coming to #carlsjr October 7 and #hardees October 5! #sonicboompic.twitter.com/EjSBRkJuK6

— The CDM Company (@TheCDMCompany) September 2, 2015

But this was soon deleted suggesting there was an embargo placed on this announcement for reasons we don’t understand.

Especially since the exact same announcement is still up and has been up for a rather lengthy period of time on the Carls Cool Kids website which CDM Company apparently handles (see pic above).

So anyway, it looks like fast food toys for Sonic Boom Fire & Ice are on the way, this is great news, now if only we could get a side order of a new trailer or a large screenshot of fires to go with that since there has been no news about the game at all since announcement.

What do you guys think? Excited about the toys? Going to go to Carls Jr. and Hardee’s just for the toot? Going to get Boom Fire & Ice despite there being no information about it? See that thing below that’s a comment box, you can say stuff like “I WANT TOYS!” or “TOYS!? YOU MEAN ACTION FIGURES!” Let us and your fellow blue believers know, Toys! Burgers! Fires oh my! TOYS! If anyone were still in any doubt, odds are there won’t be a Sonic Boom event this year, however, Sega have hinted on their Facebook page that the event may return in 2016 if this post is anything to go by.

boom2016

As of yet there has been no confirmation on a possible Summer of Sonic for 2016, but at least this bit of news seems to confirm that Sega are at least open to the idea of a future event.

So anyone interested in going to another Sonic Boom event, let us know in the comments.

Sonic Runners Hits 3 Million Downloads

Sonic Runners continues to do well for Sega it seems, despite a very rocky launch and the game being plagued with serious problems. That hasn’t stopped people from downloading it 3 million times. Continue reading Sonic Runners Hits 3 Million Downloads

G.E. Entertainment Reveals The Blaze Plush

blazeplush

Well there’s no stopping GE Entertainment is there? Barely a few months since Big & Espio came out, now it looks like Blaze is going to be heading our way very soon.

No details on pricing yet, but size wise, it’s slightly taller than their Rouge plush and a bit smaller than the recently released Espio plush. Exact release date hasn’t been announced, but the fact it’s on their website suggests it’s on the way.

Incidentally, this is the first time that Blaze has ever been in a plush form (officially).

As always, only ebay & amazon sellers will stock these.

Thanks to Ogilvie for the heads up

The Spin: How I learned to Stop Worrying & Love Big the Cat

spin

Sega recently started a tournament to see which was the fanbase’s favourite Sonic sidekick, and I’m very sad to report that a great injustice has been committed, this is the biggest thing to happen to this fanbase since Sonic’s eyes became green.

That being, Big the Cat may get knocked out in the first round.

At the time of writing, Big sits at just under 40% whilst the Chao sits at just over 60%. Now we have to ask, what is wrong with this picture? What is wrong is that Big the Cat is the best character in the whole series and if he were president of the United Kingdom he would be the best president we have ever elected, since King Charles the third.

Now if you’d take a moment, just to sit right there, I shall tell you why Big the Cat is the best character in the series.

Sonic Boom Costumes Now Available at Amazon

stickscostumeThe costumes have landed.

A few months ago, Rubies Costume Co announced that it would be making costumes based on Sonic Boom, well it looks like the first wave of costumes are now available to buy on Amazon.

amycostume

The costumes are currently only in child sizes and so far only Amy & Sticks have been released. However, Rubies did previously release Sonic costumes in adult sizes so if you really want them you never know.

So if you have any younger siblings who are into Sonic Boom, these might interest them.

Sonic’s First Home Appearance On The Amiga & He Was A Bad Guy!

sonicamiga*puts on a deep echo like voice* “TIME FOR HISTORY!”

Sonic’s first appearance in a video game was Rad Mobile, Rad Mobile was an arcade racing game in which Sonic appeared as a small toy in the window of the car you raced. This officially is the first appearance of Sonic in a videogame. His next appearance is Sonic the Hedgehog on the MegaDrive, however it turns out that this information isn’t exactly accurate.

Whilst I cannot find an exact date for when Rad Mobile first came out, it seems to be early 1991. However, information uncovered by Guru Larry (however it was originally discovered by another user (more on that later)), points to an Amiga game called ‘The Adventures of Quik & Silva’ in which Sonic appears as a villain!

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5uC0ymZK3s

What’s going on here? Well, as Guru Larry explains, the game wasn’t sold in stores, it was made and sold to a video-game magazine who put it on their cover as a free game for Amiga users. The magazine in question was ‘Amiga Fun’ and the issue in question is dated May 10th 1991, this pre-dates Sonic 1’s official launch by a month!

Meaning this is actually the first home appearance of Sonic, not Sonic 1.

So what happened? Well, it seems that the company behind this game decided to make smaller games which were cheap and easy to produce, then sell them to magazines who would put them on their covers as a ‘free gift’. Readers would not only have a magazine to read, but also a game to play on their system.

However, to save money on building/designing assets, this company did some slightly shady stuff, mainly in the form of disobeying copyright laws, the game contains a few unauthorised/unlicensed uses of characters, even Mario is in here, however more strangely is that Sonic is also in the game despite his first game not being released yet.

To top it off, Sonic is a bad guy in the game!

It’s completely unofficial, but still quite a fun tid bit of information, especially since this wasn’t a fan project and it was actually bought by a second company who put it on their magazine.

Also, as mentioned earlier, this was in fact first discovered back in 2011, however it was only brought to light now and Guru Larry’s video contains a lot more information. But give out the other video a look if you don’t care about the details.

I really hate having to do updates like this… I utterly hate it, I also find myself saying this a lot but my god it’s becoming harder and harder to say it with sincerity. Believe it or not, I want Sega to do well, I like Sega, I like the people who work there, I love the games they put out and they’ve entertained me for hours.
