Early Tails Sprite Uncovered in 1990s SEGA/DiC Design Documents

An early sprite design for Miles ‘Tails’ Prower has been unearthed in a fresh set of 1990s SEGA and DiC design documents. The reference artwork comes from SEGA of America and was sent to DiC circa 1992, to brief the animation studio on how to illustrate Sonic’s foxy friend in the ‘SatAM’ and ‘Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog’ TV series.

Also, it shows Tails as brown. Very brown.

The discovery follows the reveal of early Tails artwork designed by several sources, including original Tails designer Yasushi Yamaguchi and Greg Martin. These sprites come from this same SatAM Sonic artwork depository, a resource that community archivist @Fieryfurnace obtained recently.

Here’s what they wrote about the new find, on SSMB:

[The assets folder] also included the only colour reference DiC was sent which I’ve found so far (again, I’m assuming this would be late April 1992 based on the dates for the other Tails sheets and DiC’s character design timeline). It’s an early (perhaps the earliest?) sprite sheet of Tails for Sonic 2. This Tails is burnt orange/brown with a peach snout, chest fur, and inner ears. The tips of his tails are white, the same colour as his gloves.

Sonic fans with long memories may recall a version of Tails represented in various merchandise and other media with a peach-coloured muzzle (as opposed to the white colour we are now used to). This was no accident – Fieryfurnace posits that all of that was an accurate depiction of the character as referenced in the above reference document. You can see an image of this below, courtesy of Fieryfurnace:

While there is evidence of an artist – possibly at DiC – taking a stab at recolouring Tails, it was not until Yamaguchi’s final design came in that a standardised look for Tails was set across all media (and even then, there were divergences across territories, such as on Sonic 2’s Mega Drive box artwork). Fieryfurnace tracks the “origins of DiC’s colour schemes for Tails” in the image below:

You can see more long-lost documents from the depository on the SSMB Forums, as @Fieryfurnace has established an evolving topic on the subject right here.

Superhero Vector Protects Vanilla in May 2023’s Sonic Channel Calendar Artwork

Sonic Channel has published its latest Calendar Artwork for May 2023, and the results of its fan poll from earlier this month have been realised! The latest in its ‘fantasy scenario’ art series, this new piece features Vector as a superhero protecting Vanilla the Rabbit (presented as a theatre-going contemporary damsel in distress) from certain robot doom.

According to the Sonic Channel blog accompanying this artwork (via machine translation), “This month [we have] Vector, looking like an American comic book hero, and Vanilla, looking a bit more adult [sophisticated]! What is the mysterious giant robot looming far beyond the city at night?”

The interesting mashup is the latest in the Sonic Channel social media team’s ‘Isekai Ohgiri’ series, which places well-known characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog series in unconventional situations and scenarios. Previously, we’ve had Shadow and Infinite doing battle as idol singers, Amy and Blaze seeking truth in some celestial powers, Tikal and Chaos running a pizza parlour and Silver and Elise stunning the crowd as ice-skating performers.

You can download this latest May 2023 Calendar art, as well as all previous months in this series, on Sonic Channel’s website.

SEGA Japan’s New VTuber Sings Sonic Adventure 2 And You Cannot Escape

If you haven’t been paying attention to YouTube in the last couple of years, you might be interested to know that there’s been a bit of a trend – particularly in Japan – towards creating content using virtual hosts instead of real people. Even the Sonic social team has got on board recently with its TailsTube series.

Now, SEGA Japan has launched its own VTuber called Usaki Rin, and one of the first things the company got ‘her’ to do was to sing Sonic Adventure 2’s “Escape From The City”. Because, of course it did.

This cover of the iconic City Escape theme, which features a cool new arrangement by Jun Senoue, was actually posted a couple weeks ago on Usaki Rin’s standalone YouTube channel – and is itself a full version of a song originally performed back in February during a ‘SEGA New’ livestream.

But the Official Japanese SEGA Twitter account has only just got round to posting it, so we’ve heard it, and now we’re obliged to share it with you, ensuring that there is truly no escape from hearing the vocalised tones of our new Kawaii Overlord.

If watching animated big-chested ladies bopping to SEGA music is your thing, you can subscribe to the Usaki Rin channel by heading here.

With the brand new ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ product range from the LEGO Group, Sonic fans can build, create and play as Sonic, Tails, Amy and Dr. Eggman in beloved levels including Sonic’s Speed Sphere, Tails’s Workshop and Tornado Plane, Amy’s Animal Rescue Island and the iconic Green Hill Zone. The LEGO® Sonic product range will be available at authorized retailers starting in August 2023.

“At SEGA, we strive to create memorable experiences with our licensing partners that fans will cherish for years to come,” said Ivo Gerscovich, Chief Business & Brand Officer at SEGA of America. “The LEGO Group is the leader in play, and the perfect partner to bring exciting stories, iconic characters & environments from the Sonic universe to life in fans’ living rooms globally. The LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog collaboration features four sets of different sizes and complexity with modular elements inviting Sonic fans to build high-velocity obstacles for Sonic to blast through as he battles the Badniks and rescues his friends. Sonic fans can get creative, construct their own unique courses, combine sets and invent new storylines, or reminisce their treasured memories as they challenge the beloved hedgehog to be the hero of the day.

With all-new toy accessories, builders will have unique role-playing opportunities where they can step into the Blue Blur’s iconic red sneakers and spend time with his famous friends, hang out at the DJ deck, repair the Tornado plane and more fun activities.

The product range from SEGA and the LEGO Group furthers the global companies’ collaborative efforts, following the highly successful LEGO® Ideas Sonic the Hedgehog™ Green Hill Zone set, released in 2021.

“It really isn’t like anything else! The sets offer an entirely new, action-packed play experience,” says Frédéric Roland Andre, Designer at the LEGO Group. “I’m especially proud of the Speed Sphere, as it was quite a challenge to figure out how we would get Sonic to speed up and interact with each course. Sonic is known for his speed and how he runs and jumps through courses, so for LEGO sets inspired by him there was no way we could create a static set, we simply had to be creative and make them as action-packed as possible!”

Let’s roll! The LEGO Sonic The Hedgehog sets are on sale from August 1st, 2023, on www.LEGO.com and in LEGO stores.

SEGA Sammy Reportedly Set to Acquire ‘Angry Birds’ Maker Rovio Entertainment

SEGA Sammy looks set to expand its mobile gaming business very soon, as a fresh report from the Wall Street Journal has revealed that the House of Sonic is nearing a deal to buy ‘Angry Birds’ developer Rovio Entertainment for around $1 billion.

According to the WSJ, assuming the talks “don’t break down or drag out”, the Finland-based mobile game maker could find itself a part of SEGA Sammy’s portfolio as early as next week, citing people familiar with the deal.

Rovio is best known for its fowl-flinging, pig-smashing hit game, Angry Birds, originally released for mobile devices in 2009 and is largely credited as one of the first breakout games for the iPhone and the then-nascent smartphone market. The company has built on the initial game’s success as much as it could over the years, turning the name into a multimedia franchise spanning TV spinoffs and movies.

It seems that, despite Rovio’s best efforts, it reportedly could not replicate the same success as it did with Angry Birds for any of its new IP, which is cited as a reason for the company putting itself on sale and becoming available for acquisition.

Of course, in today’s gaming landscape acquisitions are starting to become commonplace, with Microsoft and Sony getting headlines for its increasing third-party studio buyouts. It seems only natural that SEGA Sammy would join in on the action – and adding an existing beloved IP to its portfolio could perhaps revitalise the Japanese corporation’s performance in the mobile space.

All that said, don’t hold your breath for any Sonic x Angry Birds crossover events just yet. You could probably expect a silly art piece from the official Sonic social media team though.

Apparent Leaked Clip of Sonic Prime’s Next Episode Surfaces Online

It’s been a hot minute since we all binged (very quickly) the first eight episodes of Sonic Prime on Netflix, and since its December debut we’ve not heard much about when the rest of the first season will hit the streaming service. But if a supposedly leaked clip of a future episode is any indication, we may be in for some news very soon.

A short seven-second clip has surfaced on Twitter, originally posted by AstroSeedP but circulated further by the ‘Sonic__Prime’ account, claiming to be “new Prime Season 2 leaked footage”. While we’d argue that this wouldn’t strictly be ‘Season 2’ (more like ‘Season 1, Part 2’), the clip does appear to show an action sequence that could legitimately follow on from Episode 8’s swashbuckling cliffhanger.

We won’t speculate any further – although we will note that the clip does also seem to feature an action from Sonic that doesn’t previously seem possible in previous episodes – but if you’re curious and don’t mind potential spoilers, you can take a look at the video and some screengrabs we’ve pulled from the clip below (click the spoiler tags to reveal).

Clip:

(we don’t know why the clip includes Sonic Unleashed music, either)

Sonic Forces ‘World Tour’ Event Begins – Popstar Amy and Rockstar Rouge Schedules Revealed

After casually announcing it without much fanfare, SEGA HARDlight has shadow-dropped the dates for its newest Sonic Forces and Sonic Dash characters, Popstar Amy and Rockstar Rouge. And what’s more, you can start working towards unlocking one of these new players right now!

Tucked away in its community Discord channel, SEGA HARDlight revealed via its Events Calendar that the first event in the ‘World Tour’ series has begun today. Popstar Amy has arrived in Sonic Forces: Speed Battle, and if you want to keep her as an active competitor you must collect a number of character tokens in order to have her on the roster.

We also know the cadence of the rest of the ‘World Tour’ events, too. Once Popstar Amy ends on 20 April, Rockstar Rouge will be available for a limited time in Sonic Forces until 27 April. Then the two characters move on to Sonic Dash, with Popstar Amy available between 20 – 26 April and Rockstar Rouge taking the stage from 27 April until 02 May.

Vanilla Wins Latest Sonic Channel Fantasy Art Poll

The official Sonic Channel Japanese social account has completed its latest poll asking fans who they’d like to see in the next issue of its ongoing ‘Isekai Ohgiri’ fantasy art series – with Vanilla the Rabbit beating out her daughter Cream to feature in a new scenario with Vector the Crocodile.

According to the Sonic Channel social media post, Vector will be portrayed as some kind of ‘detective’ in the upcoming art piece, which will likely be completed and posted at the end of the month. The poll showed two emojis alongside the two character options, with Cream getting a ‘spy’ emoji and Vanilla a ‘painting fingernails’ icon. This may be a hint as to how the two characters would have been handled in the final piece.

It would have been nice to see Cream potentially run alongside Vector as a co-detective – like Batman and Robin – but Vanilla hasn’t been represented much in Sonic media outside of a side role in the Sonic Advance games and some TV and comic media. This may be just one reason why she won the poll by quite a substantial margin – 70.5% to Cream’s 29.5% result.

What are you hoping Vector and Vanilla’s partnership is going to look like? Let us know in the comments below.

Sonic Origins Artist Releases Statement Addressing ROM Hack Sprite Plagiarism

Andy Collins, an artist who has contributed to the Sonic 3 & Knuckles remaster in Sonic Origins, has published a statement that confirms the presence of fan-made sprites from the ROM hack ‘Sonic 3 Complete’ within the final release of Origins.

“It has come to my attention that several sprites of Super Sonic from Sonic 3 Complete ended up being used in Sonic Origins,” Collins, also known as A+Start, wrote on his Twitter page. “This was an honest mistake on my part. They were used as reference [images] during production and due to my way of working, went unnoticed amongst already completed sprites. I believed they were sprites I’d already started, and kept working them until I thought they were complete.”

“Obviously, this isn’t ideal and doesn’t reflect my work,” the statement continues. “I can only apologise and hope this doesn’t incite any ill will towards myself or Headcannon [the developer of the Sonic 3 & Knuckles remaster within Sonic Origins].”

Collins is a well-known artist within the community, and his sprite and pixel skills are showcased well in the Sonic Origins compilation package – most notably for us, within the intro sequence for the New Blue Spheres game mode, which features an impressive 3D Sonic leaping towards the screen.

The artist published the above statement on April 1, leading some to believe this may have been an April Fools prank. But with no follow-up message and many commentators corroborating Collins’ words about lifted Super Sonic sprites, it seems like this is a genuine notice addressing a genuine mistake.

If there’s any other detail to come from this, we’ll let you know. In the meantime, check out the full statement here.

Over 1 Million Detectives Have Downloaded The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog

SEGA’s April Fools Day video game, The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, has become anything but a joke – with over one million players downloading the title since it launched on Steam on March 31. We feel like that has to be some kind of record, right? Well, if it isn’t, it’s still super impressive!

The news was announced by Sonic Social Media Manager Katie Chrzanowski, who also executive produced the light-hearted detective thriller. Chrzanowski also revealed that the game has been highly rated by those who have played it too, with ‘Murder’ currently sitting at #61 on highest-rated games on Steam of all time.

It’s an incredible milestone for a comical spinoff game made entirely by the US-based Sonic social media team. Of course, while the fact the game is free could go some way to explain its explosive popularity, it doesn’t discount the huge positive reception from all players who have tried it. It’s been warmly embraced by everyone who has taken the time to play it – it’s a great little detective story!

So it has been a great weekend for the Sonic social team – and all it took was killing off their company’s mascot! Congratulations, SEGA!

SEGA Hardlight Introducing ‘Popstar Amy’ & ‘Rockstar Rouge’ to Sonic Forces Mobile

SEGA HARDlight recently teased some new incoming characters for avid players of its mobile Sonic games, with the below image shared on its social media accounts last week. Now, following a server maintenance update we know more about the two musical racers about to hit Sonic Forces Mobile and Sonic Dash.

Promising “sweet melodies and electrifying guitar solos”, Popstar Amy and Rockstar Rouge will soon take centre stage in an upcoming in-game event, likely to be formally announced next week once HARDlight’s Spring-themed catch-up event ends.

Both new characters will come with an exhilarating 10/10 Speed stat when they arrive in Sonic Forces Mobile, but Popstar Amy will be built more for Acceleration (7/10), with a Strength stat of 6/10. Meanwhile, Rockstar Rouge goes all out on Strength (8/10) at a cost to Accel (6/10).

Popstar Amy will be equipped with Wind Boost and Tornado, along with new skill Solo Hit that constantly drops stun hazards ahead of your rivals as long as it’s active. Rockstar Rouge hits the track with Electro Boost and Storm Cloud, on top of a skill called Hard Rock – this will silence any nearby rivals and also fire off multi-lane projectiles at further-away enemies!

The introduction of these two new characters should spice up the action on the circuit, no doubt! We can’t wait for the in-game event to begin.

Sonic Frontiers Sells Over 3 Million Copies Worldwide

SEGA has today announced that Sonic Frontiers has now sold more than three million copies worldwide, making it one of the fastest-selling Sonic the Hedgehog titles since the 1990s. Just in time for the first DLC content update to drop later tonight!

The company shared the news on its official Japanese Sonic Twitter account, pointing to the game’s recent accolades with the “Japan Game Awards 2022 Future Category Winner” and “Famitsu Dengeki Game Awards 2022 Best Action Adventure” award wins.

At last count, the game sold 2.9 million copies globally by early February – so it has in effect sold an additional 100k units in the last month or so. Which is an incremental boost for sure, but it still gets the open zone adventure up to that 3 million milestone!

We crunched some numbers and calculated that Frontiers is just 400k units away from surpassing Sonic Heroes to become one of the best-selling 3D Sonic the Hedgehog games ever. That’s very exciting!

Congratulations to Sonic Team and SEGA for the continued success of Sonic Frontiers! If you want to celebrate the DLC release with the rest of the Sonic Community, take a look at the special Achievements you can earn until the end of the month!

Sonic Spinball’s 30th Anniversary Highlighted in New Sonic Channel Artwork

Did you know that spinoff Mega Drive title Sonic Spinball is going to be 30 years old this November? Well you probably did actually, because you’re a huge Sonic fan just like us. It seems that Sonic Team in Japan has remembered this fact, as they are focusing on an iconic scene in the pinball action game for its latest art piece.

Posted on the official Japanese Sonic Channel Twitter account, the new artwork features the blue blur chilling out in a handy drum barrel as he paddles his way through the game’s first stage, Toxic Caves. He seems rather embarrassed to be there – probably because whoever is controlling him can’t keep him on the pinball table. Still, it beats swimming in all that green gunge, doesn’t it Sonic?

Weirdly, the Twitter post accompanying this art piece mentions that this is a “commemorative illustration of “Sonic Spinball” celebrating its 30th anniversary this month” (via machine translation – emphasis ours). Sonic Spinball’s original release date in the West was actually November 1993, and in Japan it was the following month in December – so unless Sonic’s been using some leftover Time Stones that we’re not aware of, Sonic Channel might be getting a bit excited ahead of time here.

Still, it’s really nice to see some Spinball representation from the Japanese ‘Team, and we’re all here for it.

Kick Off Sonic Frontiers’ DLC Launch With New Community Achievements!

Spring is almost here, and with the promise of a new season comes some brand new Sonic the Hedgehog content to enjoy! As we reported earlier this week, Sonic Frontiers is set to get its first free content update for 2023 in just over a day’s time. So we thought we’d do something to celebrate the occasion!

That’s right, we’re introducing some new Limited Edition Achievements for the Sonic Community! These will all be Sonic Frontiers-themed, and available to all users who play the new DLC pack (and contribute to the Sonic Stadium forums) until the end of the month.

Each Badge will relate to one of the new modes or features found in the upcoming Sights, Sounds and Speed DLC pack. To earn these Badges, you will need to play or complete the relevant mode, take a screenshot of your handiwork and post it on the Sonic Stadium Forums to share with the rest of the Sonic Community.

We have created a new Topic in the ‘Sonic Chat’ forum which will be used for your Achievement hunting and screenshot sharing – check it out here for details on each Achievement Badge and how to unlock it!

Achievements FAQ

Speaking of Achievements, we know that since we launched the new system in mid-2022 there have been a lot of questions about how it works, what kind of badges you can earn, and a lot more besides. So we’ve taken the time to create a Site Guide on the Sonic Database that fully introduces the Achievements System and all you need to know about it. You can find it here:

https://board.sonicstadium.org/database/community/stadium/help/achievements/

That Database record will also contain links to other records that list special Badges you can earn, as well as legacy SSMB Awards from yesteryear (if you’re curious)! If there are any more questions about how the system works, please feel free to let me know and I can update the Suite Guide to account for any missing information.

Events Calendar

You might have noticed on the SSMB that the Calendar section has had a bit of a facelift. That’s part of a recent site software update that changes the focus of the section from less of a ‘calendar’ and more of an ‘Events’ portal. The front page of the Events section will now show an at-a-glance view of all upcoming occasions, but if you like you can switch it back to a traditional Calendar view too.

We also took the opportunity to tart up the Events widget, found in the sidebar on the Forum homepage and elsewhere. You can better see what’s coming up in the month ahead, and we’re always adding new Events so that it doesn’t get stale and empty. We encourage the Community to also create Events to help populate the Calendar with us – you get Achievement Points and Badges for contributing, and you also get a warm glow of satisfaction for helping your fellow Sonic fan know when the next major game anniversary will be. A quick update on the Personal Discussion forum – in our last update post we announced that this forum would be closed down at a nearby date. Due to certain events that have taken place this week, the moderation team has decided that the closure of the forum is long overdue. So if you no longer see the forum where you would expect it to be… that will be why. It’s kaput.

Why has it been shut down? To recap, the site staff spent some time re-assessing the kind of discussion and content that we would like to see and encourage on the Sonic Stadium and its forums, and we found that topics of a deeply personal nature – many of which veered very closely to sensitive and borderline subjects – are themes that we no longer have an appetite for hosting on our community. We want to be a positive, encouraging space for people to come together and talk about their favourite things, but at the same time we can not be a destination where community members end up therapising one another.

Sad topics (a significant person’s passing, or a newsworthy tragedy, for example) will of course continue to be allowed in the General Discussion forum. But topics of a deeply personal nature, of the kind previously fit for the Personal Discussion forum, will no longer be permitted. For various reasons, we also cannot move certain topics from the Personal Discussion forum into a new ‘allowed’ destination. Thanks for your understanding on this.

Coming Soon

I have to say, I’m enjoying finding the time to post site updates on here once again. This is starting to become a monthly thing, isn’t it!? Maybe we can make a habit of this. Anyway, I wanted to round things off with a notice that I’m still working on a number of further updates to the site, including slight design tweaks to make the user experience a little cleaner, and some new features that I hope you’ll love.

But the headline here is all about the Achievements, and I want to get into the habit of offering more seasonal/exclusive Badges to encourage community discussion and connection. Stay tuned for more in the coming month/s!

IDW Writer Evan Stanley Reveals New, ‘More Workable Guidelines’ for Shadow

Shadow fans, rejoice! According to IDW Sonic comics writer and artist Evan Stanley, SEGA has established some revised guidelines on how to work with the moody anti-hero, opening the door for Stanley, Flynn and co to further develop his character arc in the future.

Addressing questions about the “red tape” around writing for Shadow, Stanley revealed on Tumblr that the guidelines have become a lot clearer in recent times, allowing more freedom for writers looking to flesh out his character on paper.

We’ve gotten some clearer, more workable guidelines for how to handle [Shadow]! I had very little trouble writing his part in the upcoming issues, and SEGA’s notes actually feed me up to write him more how I’d like to.

Whereas in the past, SEGA’s strict guidelines surrounding Shadow only left enough room for comic authors to write him in as a rather two-dimensional character, there now seems to be an active interest from the Sonic Brand team to make the Chaos Controller more understood. Stanley recalls a recent situation in a separate Tumblr post about this and how SEGA’s change of heart has opened up doors for the character.

Shadow being more understood is precisely what happened. I’m reminded of a scene in an upcoming issue where in the original draft Shadow acted without explaining himself, only giving an aggressive, confident response to his team-mates. This isn’t how I would have liked him to handle the situation. But in previous issues, this is how I’ve been asked to write him… so that’s what I did.

So you can imagine my delight to get the script back from SEGA with the request to have him instead explain his reasoning when it makes sense to do so and to showcase his intelligence, pragmatism, and capacity for strategy in the future. Not only does this make him much more workable within storylines, it helps make it clear that his “pride” is, from his perspective, a non-judgemental statement of fact and not an ego trip. It’s also an honest reflection of reality– 99 out of 100 times he really IS that good.

It all sounds really promising, and hopefully this will mean Shadow will have the space to grow as a character and not just be some grumpy git without much of a motive anymore.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Wins Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award for Favourite Movie 2023

Sonic the Hedgehog’s silver screen adventures just keep on winning, as the 2022 Paramount movie sequel ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ took the prize of ‘Favourite Movie’ at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards 2023.

The live-action movie, which pits Sonic and Tails against Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles, beat out Hollywood rivals such as ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, ‘Black Adam’, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and others to win the award.

It’s no surprise that the movie won the hearts and minds of kids worldwide, with the movie grossing over $400 million at the box office since its premiere last year. Let’s hope the awards keep on rolling for Paramount and the Sonic movie team!

Sonic Gold Metallic Art Print Launching March 3 at Moor-Art Gallery

Moor-Art Gallery is set to launch another official Sonic the Hedgehog art print tomorrow, and this one is pretty golden.

This latest piece, titled ‘Mega’ and created by artist and designer Eileen Steinbach, features a cool silhouette of Sonic racing through Green Hill Zone on a giant ring – all of it painted gold. The print comes on A3 on premium quality gold art paper, and looking at Moor-Art’s promotional images, it certainly looks the part!

This print will be limited to only 125 copies, first come first serve. It’ll go on sale on Friday 3 March at 6pm UK / 1pm Eastern / 10am Pacific, and will cost £29.99. You’ll be able to grab it at Moor-Art Gallery’s website here.

Elise and Merlina Go Head to Head in Latest Sonic Channel Isekai Poll

The latest fan poll for the Japanese Sonic Channel’s ‘Isekai Ohgiri’ fantasy artwork series has launched, and is currently asking the community which character they would like to see paired with Silver the Hedgehog – Elise from Sonic The Hedgehog (2006), or Merlina from Sonic and the Black Knight?

As with previous polls, the winning character will feature in a special art piece alongside a second pre-determined character (in this case, Silver). Both will be placed together in a surprising and interesting new scenario that fans will have never seen before.

Not many details are currently being shared as to what that Silver x Elise/Merlina scenario will be, but machine translation on Sonic Channel’s social media post suggests a sporty theme, with Silver perhaps playing the role of coach.

This poll in particular is significant because both characters have only had minor roles in the Sonic game universe, and have not had much representation outside of their respective games since. Elise in particular has never had the 2D Uekawa-style treatment, so that might be fun to see.

Fans have until Monday 6 March at 12:00 Japan time to vote for their favourite to win. Best of luck to all concerned!

English Version of SEGA Sonic Cosmo Fighter Arcade Game Dumped and Released Online

A rare English language version of the sit-in arcade game SEGA Sonic Cosmo Fighter has been dumped and released to the public. It’s not currently playable, but fans can download the ROM in anticipation of the game being operable on the MAME emulator when it is net updated.

The ROM dump was provided by Twitter user “IAMAMAZING100” (which is, actually, an amazing name), who has reportedly been in possession of a legitimate SEGA Sonic Cosmo Fighter arcade cabinet since June 2021.

While there is currently no way to play the ROM once downloaded, eager Sonic fans have taken to run the file through audio software regardless to see what happens… and surprisingly enough you can hear the voices of Sonic and Eggman as the game runs.

SEGA Sonic Cosmo Fighter was already an incredibly rare piece of Sonic (and arcade) history, due to its extremely limited Japan-only run in the early 90s, but the fact that a legitimate English language version exists has been something of a legendary find. The fact that we have a dump that may soon be playable will go a long way for arcade game preservation efforts.

The Top Sonic GBA Games We Want To See on Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo surprised everyone during its recent Nintendo Direct showcase, by announcing the launch of a Game Boy Advance suite of games for subscribers of its Nintendo Switch Online (Expansion Pack) service. Not only was the GBA a short-lived but stunning little system, but its game library available for it is packed with some of the most excellent portable experiences you could find.

Naturally, as soon as the GBA NSO app was revealed, gaming fans around the world began speculating about what kind of games could appear on the service. Well, at the Sonic Stadium we’re not above some entertaining wish-listing, and given that Nintendo’s purple little portable was home to several fantastic Sonic the Hedgehog games, we felt the time was right to hype up the best of those games and hope that SEGA offers us a chance to replay these on modern console/s.

So here it is; our breakdown of all the Sonic (and Sonic Team, for good measure) games on GBA that we most want to see on the Nintendo Switch Online service (or alternatively, on some kind of special compilation developed by SEGA). It’s quite hard to rank these games because almost all of them (well, all except one really) were very entertaining in their own right, and honestly speaking we’d ask to have all of the below games (well, all except one) re-introduced to Switch in some way or another.

10: Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis

Yeah, this is the exception we mentioned before. Sonic the Hedgehog: Genesis was an attempt at a 16-Bit Sonic the Hedgehog remake on Nintendo’s handheld console, and it absolutely stank. Only released in North America, and for good reason, a number of small quality of life improvements in a spin dash and save feature couldn’t offset the glitches, awful music reproduction and inexplicable sluggishness of its core gameplay. This was a 15th Anniversary celebration gone horribly wrong.

We’d probably only want to see it on NSO as a curiosity, and even then let’s make sure all the other games in this list have been added first.

9: Tiny Chao Garden

This is more of a micro-game than a full-blown boxed GBA release, but we think it counts! Tiny Chao Garden was included in most Sonic GBA titles (including all of the Sonic Advance games), but was also a standalone app that could be temporarily installed into your GBA’s memory (just don’t turn it off!). It was a means for players to transfer their A-Life Chao creatures from Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and Sonic Adventure DX on Nintendo Gamecube onto Game Boy Advance, so that they could raise and nurture their little racer/fighter on the go.

An obviously cut-down version of the overall Chao raising experience, it offered a couple of minigames you could play with your Chao for in-game currency, as well as the ability to purchase food and various items for your little buddy to interact with.

While we did really enjoy using the Tiny Chao Garden where it was available at the time, it’s really best used when transferring Chao from GBA to Gamecube for short periods. And given that transfer functionality is unlikely to be included in any NSO app re-release – on top of the fact that it’s already included as a side-game in the Sonic Advance games – we don’t really see much value in its separate inclusion.

8: Puyo Pop

Sonic Team was busy throughout the Game Boy Advance’s lifecycle. Not only were they working with Dimps on many of the Sonic Advance titles, but they also had a hand in developing the Puyo Puyo games, thanks to a studio re-organisation at SEGA at the time. Puyo Pop was the first such title under Sonic Team’s production, and one of the first unashamedly ‘Puyo’ games to reach the West.

If you’ve played Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, you’ll know what the score is here. Little coloured blobs drop down, Tetris-style, into your play window, and you must arrange them by matching at least four of the same colour to make them disappear (or send ‘junk’ blobs to your opponent’s play window). It’s a puzzle game that’s stood the test of time, and wholly addictive fun. We think there’d be value in letting a puzzle game like this run wild on NSO’s GBA app.

7: Puyo Pop Fever

Following the toe-dip in the water that was Puyo Pop, Sonic Team followed up with a full-on head dunk with Puyo Pop Fever. This was a hyper version of the blob-matching original, with a very vibrant presentation featuring anime characters doing battle at a weird Puyo magic school (or something), vying to be top of the class. Gameplay-wise this entry introduced new mechanics such as different Puyo shape combinations and a ‘Fever’ mode that allowed players a chance to build up some combo-clears that would send your opponents packing.

It’s a much more engaging sequel to play over the first Puyo Pop title, so if there was a choice between the two games to include on NSO, we’d plump for Amitie and crew here.

6: ChuChu Rocket!

ChuChu Rocket! was originally a surprise release from Sonic Team on the Dreamcast – a quick and furious party game of (space) cat and (space) mouse which was developed to highlight the SEGA home console’s innovative online gaming functionalities. For something that was essentially a hobby project for Yuji Naka and co, we thought it was a one-hit wonder at the time, until 2001 when a Game Boy Advance version was announced.

The core gameplay loop is extraordinary fun with three friends – each player has to lay down arrows to try and direct a stream of mice into their space rocket, while also directing cats (which eat the mice and wipe out your score if scuttled aboard your vessel) to your opponents’. There is also a slower-paced but cerebrally-challenging Puzzle mode which was so addictive it ensured the game stayed in your console.

On Game Boy Advance, much of the manic action is maintained – the main differences being that the polygonal graphics are replaced with sprites, and instead of the Dreamcast’s online play the multiplayer was limited to game link cables. With NSO’s GBA app allowing for online link-up play, we think there would be some weirdly poetic sense to offering this engaging game for a whole new generation.

5: Sonic Pinball Party

Now we’re getting to the real Sonic games on the system, and we’re starting with a decent pinball spinoff that not only features Sonic the Hedgehog, but Sonic Team favourites NiGHTS and Samba de Amigo as well. Sonic Pinball Party, unlike Sonic Spinball before it, takes a rather conventional approach to the flipper game, opting to have players running standard steel balls against themed tables.

It wasn’t really a game that held your interest for very long, as you could see everything on offer within a short few hours, but there was enough charm in the table environments and fun gimmicks to be worth several return plays. Just don’t go into the Story mode for anything really meaningful, it’s a load of old tripe. But you know, any excuse to see Sonic, NiGHTS and Amigo share the spotlight – probably the first and last time that will ever happen.

There will no doubt be other pinball-themed candidates that Nintendo will want to put on the GBA NSO service before Sonic Pinball Party, but if SEGA drags its heels over revisiting the core Sonic Advance series this would be a pretty easy get while we waited for the primo stuff.

4: Sonic Advance 2

We absolutely adored Sonic’s second handheld adventure on Game Boy Advance, when it was first released. Giving it full marks in our review at the time due to its super-fast action, original zone environments and stylish new moves that worked with the level design to make you feel like a boss as you air tricked to upper routes.

The game has lost a little bit of that shine over the years, with repeat plays revealing some frustrations with the rather straightforward stage maps and little opportunity for traditional Sonic-style exploration. Not to mention the frustrating approach to Chaos Emerald collection (even if the Special Stages themselves are pretty cool). But with a banging soundtrack, excellent presentation and some nice unlockable bonuses, this is still worth a play for the dedicated Sonic fan.

Because the Sonic Advance trilogy was originally published in the West by not-SEGA (THQ in the US, Infogrames in Europe), it’s difficult to know whether we will see these games appear on NSO’s GBA app due to the possible additional licensing involved. If SEGA is smart, they’d have found a way to regain sole publishing ownership of these games. But if not, there’s still a chance they could appear on the Japanese NSO service, given all three were previously released on Wii U’s GBA Virtual Console.

3: Sonic Advance 3

The third and final entry in the Sonic Advance series mixed things up a bit with a new ‘tag’ system that allowed players to use two characters at once and combine their abilities. It was extremely gimmicky, but paid off better than a similar execution in its home console spiritual cousin, Sonic Heroes.

With more sensible pacing, intricate level design and an interesting plot to boot, Sonic Advance 3 ends up becoming a little more engaging than its predecessor in the long term, and we’d love to get the chance to blast through Sunset Hill and Cyber Track once again.

2: Sonic Advance

We know the first Sonic Advance game is the slowest of all three in the series, but we feel that it has stood the test of time a lot better than its sequels. Although the animations on Sonic, Tails and friends are a little stuffy by today’s standards (we’re really not sure about the look of that run, Sonic), everything else about this game channels the very essence of the classic 16-bit Sonic adventures to the letter.

The multi-tiered stage design, the inertia and pacing, the music, the boss fights… everything here just feels correct in a way that Sonic Advance 2 and 3 couldn’t quite match (or in some cases, over-egged). And for the first Sonic outing on a Nintendo platform, this remains a perfect introduction. What we wouldn’t give to experience the atmosphere of Egg Rocket once again on a modern console. That soundtrack and sunset, man.

1: Sonic Battle

As much as we love the Sonic Advance series, there’s one Sonic the Hedgehog title that we would describe as ‘iconic’ on the Game Boy Advance, and that game would be Sonic Battle. A spinoff that is packed full of style, story and (literally) kick-ass gameplay, Battle was a portable fighting game that takes a lot of cues from the Super Smash Bros series while introducing a uniquely fresh ‘Sonic’ twist. And it was executed to perfection.

While the moveset for each character may seem limiting by today’s standards, at the time it was a great use of the GBA’s control system, allowing for special moves that really took advantage of each characters’ specific traits. What’s more, the Story mode had you befriend a robot called Emerl, who you could customise and upgrade skills for during fights.

Every pixel in this game just oozes ‘cool’, from the art direction to the creative 3D environments to the unusually-intense story mode, which contains a lot more canonical easter eggs than you’d expect. With the NSO GBA app offering the ability to replace link-cable multiplayer with online play, getting Sonic Battle on the Nintendo service would be a no-brainer and absolutely the first thing we’d ask SEGA and Nintendo for.

Honourable Mention – Sonic X: A Super Sonic Hero

There’s one other Sonic-related product that was released on the Game Boy Advance, and we would be remiss to not include it in this list in some fashion. The reason we can’t really rank it in the same way as the others is that it’s not strictly a game; as the name suggests, ‘Sonic X: A Super Sonic Hero’ was a GBA Video cartridge release that contained two episodes of the 2003 animated series (‘Chaos Control Freaks’ and ‘Sonic to the Rescue’).

It’s a strange product because SEGA wasn’t really involved. Majesco developed and produced the short-running GBA Video series, including this Sonic X release, using its proprietary video encoding techniques and software. There’s really no reason to want this on Nintendo’s subscription service as there are other means to watch the anime, and licensing right aplenty would mean that its inclusion would be pretty far-fetched anyway.

Still, it’s a nice little curio and worth getting for a collector’s piece.

Well, what do you think of our lineup? Do you agree with the order of this list? What would you change? Let us know in the comments section below! And let’s all cross our fingers for all (or at least, some) of these games to appear on Nintendo Switch Online’s GBA app (or even better, a modern console compilation release)!
