(Update: Confirmed) Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice Delayed to 2016

Perhaps someone’s listening eh? 😉

The online game rental site GameFly is now listing the game for a Dec 31 2016 release date at least in North America, however this is just another way of saying it’ll be out in 2016 at some point. This change is very recent, as looking through a Google Cache of the site, it showed that as recent as September 8th that the game was still listed for November 3 2015.

If this is indeed true, we may just be in a very rare turn of events where we go a whole year without a retail Sonic game. Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Rio Olympics are also scheduled for 2016 as opposed to their usual release being in the year prior to said Olympics.

Wonder what’s up with this? I’ve wondered if the NX has anything to do with this, specifically for M&S if they want to do a premium NX version of the game, and also maybe they think releasing the game closer to the Olympics will give it more fanfare, what with the Olympics being the talk of the town at that point of course. 😉

For Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice, I dunno, there’s never been a cross-gen handheld release (being released on a current handheld, and also it’s successor at the same time, like if for instance Sonic Advance 3 was delayed on GBA for a few months and appeared on both GBA and on DS at launch), but this IS a great sign that they want to take more time to give it a nice extra layer of polish and/or to try better things with it. Maybe this is going to be better than the first one after all. 😉

It finally happened, Ken Sugimori (Pokémon) has drawn Sonic!

l_55e84605c3550Above you see the cover artwork for the just announced Sega 3D Classics Print 2, a compilation of Sega’s 3D Classics on 3DS, though only five games are confirmed right now, including Sonic 1.

What’s so special is that like the box of the first pack, this was drawn by the main character designer and artist of PokĂ©mon himself; Ken Sugimori.

More surprises are teased, like the blurred out bit above. Any guesses?

The pack is due on December 22nd 2015 in Japan. The first never left Japan, so don’t expect the same for this.

Sonic Boom Event To Return in 2016?

If anyone were still in any doubt, odds are there won’t be a Sonic Boom event this year, however, Sega have hinted on their Facebook page that the event may return in 2016 if this post is anything to go by.

As of yet there has been no confirmation on a possible Summer of Sonic for 2016, but at least this bit of news seems to confirm that Sega are at least open to the idea of a future event.

Portfolio Reveals Sonic Classic Collection Had More Content Planned, Crazy Taxi 4 Pitch

It appears Sonic Classic Collection for Nintendo DS was originally going to be a much bigger collection at one point, with more games and content. The Sonic Stadium has found images on the portfolio of former SEGA Studios Australia employee Brooke Luder that reveal Sonic Spinball, Sonic 3D Blast (aka Sonic 3D Flickies’ Island) and Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine were all part of the collection during development. This would explain why sprites from Sonic Spinball and Sonic 3D Blast can be seen in the credits roll.

Another image shows that video content was planned too, though no examples are given. You can check out more images in the gallery at the bottom of this article.

SONIC CLASSIC COLLECTION

SEGA Australia had the good fortune (WOOO!) of acquiring the Sonic Classic Collection port to Nintendo DS.

I created all the UI artwork for the port. This included recreating all the game logos as Sega no longer had the original editable logos. It also involved designing and creating the in-game assets for all the front end menus and ingame menus that weren’t part of the original game play and creating sprite sheets for the EFIGS language conversions.

In non-Sonic news that will no doubt disappoint a lot of SEGA fans, Luder’s portfolio reveals that a Crazy Taxi 4 pitch was made by SEGA Studios Australia. No information about the pitch unfortunately, but we’re shown the above piece of concept art at least.

First Look at M&S Rio 2016 Arcade Edition

As said in the previous report, Sega are holding locatests from the 17th through the 20th at Club SEGA Akihabara and SEGA World Kasai, and so we have a peek at the game from 4Gamer with translations thanks to Perfectly Nintendo! Naturally info isn’t final and only refers to the current build they’re showing.

So we have 8 characters so far; Mario Luigi, Peach, Wario, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow, and of course each are of one of three types (Power, Speed, and Balanced), with Mario as Balance and Sonic as Speed, no way! We have four sports shown; 100 metres, Hammer Throw, Javelin Throw, and Archery.

Now comes the Arcade bits; one credit costs 200 yen ($2 more or less), which allows you to play 3 sports and you’ll get the results at the end of the 3, and you can play with another person in local multiplayer here, and if you both pick different sports, they will be chosen randomly.

Controls are as follows; Your feet for events where you need to run. Two joysticks with a Start Button on the side. And a handrail to balance yourself while running for example.

We also have info on the sports shown;

  • 100 metres – You use the stick to launch yourself before you start running and at the end you have to time a jump.
  • Hammer Throw – Press a button to hold the hammer, then you use the sticks to rotate the hammer, and then then you stop pressing the button at the right time to throw it.
  • Javelin Throw – You start by running and use the right stick to control the angle of your throw.
  • Archery – You have to throw arrows at nine targets, with more points awarded the closer the arrows are to the center of the targets. You use the left stick to aim, and use the right stick to use the bow to shoot the arrows. The trajectory is determined by how long you take to draw your arrows as well as weather conditions such as wind.

As usual the game on Wii U and 3DS is due in 2016, and no date of any sorts was given for the Arcade Edition at the moment.

That’s what gamer.ne.jp is reporting (translated by Perfectly Nintendo), the game in some form will indeed be heading to Arcades, the announcement was from Sega and while we don’t have any info at the moment about the game, next week Sega will hold what are called locatests (which are beta tests for Arcade machines) on July 17th-July 20th at Club SEGA Akihabara and SEGA World Kasai. No release date was given for the Arcade version, which right now is titled Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Arcade Edition, and no updates on the Wii U and 3DS version’s release date were provided either, which are due in 2016.

Sonic Motocross iPhone Game Proposal Discovered

The Sonic Stadium has today discovered a proposed Sonic game for iPhone on the resume and portfolio of illustrator Eric D Simmons. The game was being developed by 2XL Games and judging by the above artwork it was to be a motocross type of game set in familiar Sonic stages. A quick look on 2XL Games’ website shows that genre to be their speciality on mobile devices. No reason is given for this game not seeing release, but if we had to guess, it’s likely due to clashing with the mobile release of vehicle racer Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing and/or its sequel.

Found at Nintendo’s Swedish website, we have the box art for the 3DS version and it seems to confirm that the game at least on 3DS will feature amiibo support (naturally the Wii U version will likely support amiibo as well). SEGA Europe Appoints CPLG to Handle Sonic Licensing in Europe

SEGA Europe has appointed CPLG (Copyright Promotions Licensing Group) to handle its Sonic the Hedgehog licensing business in Europe. This deal will see the agency promoting both the Sonic Boom and Classic Sonic brands across all major European territories, utilizing the Sonic Boom TV series and by launching exciting new products.

CPLG is a big player in licensing and responsible for some major brands, like Tony Hawk, Jurassic World, Minions, Skylanders, Kiss, Sesame Street and more. No doubt it will be interesting to see what promotions and products we will see develop from this deal.

Sega Release A Gorgeous Animation for Sonic’s 24th Birthday

Today marks 24 years since Sonic the Hedgehog was first released, to mark the occasion Sega of Japan posted something very special, roughly translated, a designer at Sonic team was tasked with “drawing Sonic,” Well not only did they draw Sonic, but they also release this rather well done animation of the process.

Sticks jumps into the modern Sonic world in Rio 2016 Olympic Games

Thanks to the eagle eyes of Katie Britt on twitter and SuperSonic772 in our comments section, it has been found in a new trailer for the game (seen at the 0:48 mark) that Sticks is now welcomed into the modern world, now would this be “canon” as they’re technically in the real world(?) olympics is up for debate. 😛 But this marks her debut outside the Boom spin-off series! it’s not official if she is indeed playable or not, we’ll do a follow-up when we find out. Nintendo’s E3 2015 Digital Event has come and gone, and while Rio 2016 had no presence in it, Nintendo opened an E3 2015 press site (as they do every year) and put up new screenshots and a fact sheet of the game, and as GameFly noted earlier, Nintendo is officially confirmed to be the publisher in at least NA, and surprisingly, the game is actually due next year in 2016 claims the fact sheet, presumably for both versions (it just says 2016 with no version specified).

Well, this is something I don’t think anyone on the fandom ever expected to see. Sega have just announced a second Sonic Boom game, this time only for the 3DS called Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice. Just like Shattered Crystal before it, it’s being developed by Sanzaru Games (who you may also know for the Sly collection on PS3 and Vita and the 4th Sly game Thieves in Time, also for PS3 and Vita), and it’s due this winter in NA and EU.

The game is a response to the high success of the cartoon which is the “#1 program on all TV among boys 6-11 and 9-14 in its time period”. Also key new features in the game is the addition to Amy as a playable character, and the new mechanic of swapping between fire and ice powers that grant new abilities to interact with the game’s environments, as well as Bot Racing, which is tied to the game’s story and multiplayer gameplay. Players can unlock character-themed bots to use in competitions against friends on “fast courses and tracks”.

Also new is a new villain named D-fekt, though info on the character is pretty light at the moment.

Rouge Voice Actor Karen Strassman Lists ‘Sonic II’ on Resume

UPDATE 2: Thanks to the Wayback Machine we can see there were no Sonic listings on Strassman’s resume on March 14th 2012, but there are in the next capture on September 5th 2012, including ‘Sonic II’.

UPDATE: We have since found an old copy of Strassman’s resume from 22nd January 2012 that still lists ‘Sonic II’. Either work had already started on the new game back then, it’s a cancelled project or this is an error.

Original story: The Sonic Stadium has today spotted a listing for a video game titled ‘Sonic II’ on the resume of current English Rouge the Bat voice actor Karen Strassman’s resume. A Google search shows Strassman’s resume was last updated 20th May 2014 and the game is listed after Sonic Free Riders and Sonic Generations, her last roles as Rouge, so it’s likely this is an upcoming unannounced game.

The title is strange, considering we had Sonic the Hedgehog 2 back in the 90s, but then again, we did have a new Sonic the Hedgehog in 2006. However, with such negative feedback, we don’t think SEGA would create a sequel to that game, especially if it performed as poorly. There’s also the possibility this could be a remake of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but SEGA kind of did that on mobile devices not too long ago with the help of Taxman and Stealth.

We recently reported about another unknown title with a 2 in its name ‘Sonic Mach 2’, which we spotted on German Orbot voice actor Romanus Fuhrman’s resume. Could they be one and the same? We’ll have to wait and see…

3 new screenshots of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Wii U leaked

Well, it would seem an eagle-eyed person by the name of PeDaRoYs at Marioboards (and LukA8 at our forums for pointing to that!) spotted that the official Rio 2016 blog accidentally posted at least three new screens of the game, which were quickly removed moments later.

Luckily, the urls still work, so the three shots are still viewable below:

GameFly lists Nintendo as the publisher of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Wii U and 3DS in NA

So finally we have a little bit of extra news as a follow-up to the game’s announcement the other day, the rental site GameFly, which commonly lists info on unannounced games which turn out to be correct, have just put up the listings of Rio 2016 for Wii U and 3DS, and indicate that just like Sochi 2014 before it, Nintendo is back to publish Rio 2016 in NA (and likely EU), as opposed to Sega who published the first three games in the west. Nintendo has published every entry in Japan to date.

Now what’s REALLY puzzling, is that GameFly lists the Wii U version as TBD (to be determined), but the 3DS version for December 31st 2016. Dates on any site are always likely to not be final until confirmed by the publisher, but also, London 2012 did come out a bit later on 3DS than on Wii, missing the 2011 holiday season, likely to avoid releasing with Generations 3DS? Who knows. But that’s all we got so far!

Sonic’s Heading to the Orchestra with Game Symphony Japan

Ever wanted to hear some classic SEGA tracks with a full orchestra?

Game Symphony Japan is being held on October 10th, and on this night it’s a SEGA-themed special event! Guests like Takashi Iizuka and Jun Senoue will be in attendance to oversee this celebration of SEGA’s legacy of music. Part one of the full program is dedicated entirely to Sonic, and the current lineup for it is listed below;

Sonic the Hedgehog: Green Hill Zone.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2: Chemical Plant Zone.
Sonic and Knuckles: Sky Sanctuary Zone.
Sonic Adventure: Emerald Coast Zone.
Sonic Adventure 2: City Escape and Live & Learn (both instrumental versions).

Parts 2 and 3 are full of other well-remembered SEGA icons such as Segagaga, Space Channel 5, Fantasy Zone and much more! If you happen to be in Tokyo, here’s the key informations for getting in;

October 10th 2015 (Saturday)
Doors open 15:45, show starts 16:30
Venue is Tokyo Metropolitan Arts Theatre Concert Hall.
Ticket prices: S Seat is 8500 yen, A seat is 7500 yen, B seat is 6500 yen.
Tickets go on sale June 20th.

Yes, it’s the story you’ve waited for, finally we get some answers as to why the game went, well, boom. Some quick key details include confirmation that the game was intended for “unspecified next-gen consoles”, the game was mostly done in this form, and Sega gave Big Red Button so little time to do the Wii U port when the exclusivity deal happened. Another highlight is that the footage in the debut trailer (that went bangarang on your ears), actually was NOT Wii U footage after all.

SEGA to Remove Mobile Games That “No Longer Meet Standards”

SEGA has confirmed via a blog post that an unknown number of SEGA mobile titles will be removed from various services if they “no longer meet our standards.” The problem? SEGA won’t say which ones… odds are though that it’ll be poorly emulated titles, or those which got a poor rating or suffer from compatibility problems on modern OS systems and devices (looking at you, Sonic 4). Sega will not have their own booth at E3 this year

E3-logoWell now. As was heavily speculated not long ago, Sega have confirmed to GameInformer that they will not have their own booth, but say they will be “collaborating with our various business partners for this year’s E3 show”.

Full quote below:

“Over the next months, SEGA of America will be focusing on the restructure and relocation to Southern California, and we have decided to not attend E3 with our own booth this year,” a representative told us via email. “With the majority of our bigger titles launching later in 2015/2016, particularly those from our AAA studios Relic Entertainment, Sports Interactive and Creative Assembly, we are concentrating our efforts for some of these major announcements after our relocation. Instead, we will be collaborating with our various business partners for this year’s E3 show.”

My take? I don’t recall much with Sony other than Yakuza 5, and nothing that I can recall with Microsoft. Nintendo is the only one of the three I can see them working with, especially if Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games happens or not. Hell even GameInformer speculates about “Sonic hanging with Nintendo”. I mean we already have his amiibo outfit in Mario Kart 8 to start the year, so who knows.

Sonic Boom RoL Once Had a Beautiful Hub

Big Red Button developers have been busy again by recently uploading more test footage and concept art from Sonic’s last console outing Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. In the above footage taken from Tuan Nguyen’s demo reel (with Skylanders footage cut, thanks to SSMB’s Blue Blood), we can see the scrapped beautiful hub world first seen in the GDC 2013 CryEngine 3 demo footage in a playable state.

New Job Ad Suggests Future Sonic Boom TV Seasons Planned

A new SEGA job advertisement for a ‘Director of TV Series Production and Distribution’ has appeared over at LinkedIn displaying a keen interest to continue work on the Sonic Boom TV series. Season one is already airing in parts of the world and this fresh job advertisement strongly suggests SEGA is planning season two. The ad also states that upon evaluation the company would maybe be willing to work on further seasons and what they describe as ‘other opportunities’.

This person will act as project manager and coordinate/communicate with all parties ensuring the animation production and distribution is kept on track and the various parties are kept up to date with new developments as the TV series is in production.

Help CCO of Sonic to evaluate business models for new opportunities/subsequent seasons of Sonic Boom with recommending continuity plan of Sonic Boom.

Despite planning further seasons, SEGA is still yet to give word on when fans outside of the US and France can expect season one to air in their countries.

Will SEGA appear at E3 2015?

What could possibly spell bad news for Sonic the Hedgehog fans expecting a mainline Sonic title this year. SEGA has oddly not registered to show at E3 on the showfloor, and the deadline is fast approaching.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo announced their list of exhibitors who will be appearing to show off their latest titles – however, SEGA is nowhere to be found. The expo is commonly used for big announcements in the industry and giving journalists their first chance to try out some developing or announced video games.

With the very real possibility SEGA’s absence, it could be seen that Sonic Runners, the recently released mobile only game developed by Sonic Team, could be our only Sonic title this year. Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka has confirmed that Sonic will still be coming to home consoles, but nothing has been revealed as of yet.

3rd set of Sega 3D Classics coming to Nintendo 3DS, including Sonic 2!

Although SEGA suggested previously that the 3D classics line for Nintendo 3DS would be closing with Thunderblade, a further three 3D Classic titles have been confirmed by SEGA to be on the horizon.

At this time, the third set in the series only contains 3 titles. One title in particular however is certainly of interest to TSS; Sonic 2! That’s right, that means 3D special stages!

The other two games are the aforementioned Streets of Rage 2 (due in July) and Gunstar Heroes (due in August). Sonic 2 will be out in September. All will be priced at MSRP $5.99/€4.99/£4.49

Well isn’t this a surprise. Sonic Runners is actually out now on Google Play in NA (actually was dated for yesterday on February 25th, 2015). However, some phones don’t seem to be supported (my Samsung Galaxy Ace II x GT-S7560M seems incompatible).  And some who have got it to download have gotten this error message of maintenance:

Sonic Runners’ music has Unleashed its inner Colors.

Ahem. Tomoya Ohtani, who most know as the main composer of Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors, confirmed on twitter that he will be composing for the game. Now does that mean he is again the main composer remains to be seen.
