SEGA has today announced that Sonic Frontiers has now sold more than three million copies worldwide, making it one of the fastest-selling Sonic the Hedgehog titles since the 1990s. Just in time for the first DLC content update to drop later tonight!
The company shared the news on its official Japanese Sonic Twitter account, pointing to the game’s recent accolades with the “Japan Game Awards 2022 Future Category Winner” and “Famitsu Dengeki Game Awards 2022 Best Action Adventure” award wins.
At last count, the game sold 2.9 million copies globally by early February – so it has in effect sold an additional 100k units in the last month or so. Which is an incremental boost for sure, but it still gets the open zone adventure up to that 3 million milestone!
We crunched some numbers and calculated that Frontiers is just 400k units away from surpassing Sonic Heroes to become one of the best-selling 3D Sonic the Hedgehog games ever. That’s very exciting!
Congratulations to Sonic Team and SEGA for the continued success of Sonic Frontiers! If you want to celebrate the DLC release with the rest of the Sonic Community, take a look at the special Achievements you can earn until the end of the month!

This weeks UK game sales charts are in, courtesy of GFK Chart track, and Sonic Lost World is the top selling Wii U game. Lost World debuted at #1 in the Wii U only chart, ahead of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and Skylanders Swap Force, which was also released Friday. In the 3DS chart, Sonic Lost World entered at #4, being beaten by Nintendo’s own Pokémon X/Y and Animal Crossing: New Leaf. However, Sonic’s latest narrowly missed the top 10 all-formats chart, placing 11th behind Disney Infinity at #10.
We’ll see how Sonic Lost World fares next week with a full week of sales behind it.

SEGA Digital Brand Manager Ken Balough has revealed at the SEGA Forums that Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I sold best on the PlayStation 3 platform on consoles. Xbox 360 came second and Wii last. The news is quite a twist when compared to retail Sonic titles, where Nintendo’s consoles usually come out on top. No information was given as to where PC and mobile platforms ranked.
Will the same happen for Episode II? Time will tell. Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II is out now on Steam in the UK, and will be released later today in other territories. The PSN version will also be released later today in the US, then Europe tomorrow. The Xbox Live Arcade version is due out worldwide tomorrow.

Despite a full week of sales last week, Sonic Generations has dropped in the UK charts. In the top 40 All Formats chart, the game dropped eleven places from No.10 to No.21. In the Individual Units chart, the Xbox 360 version has plummeted from No.14 to No.32 and the PS3 version dropped from No.21 to No.37. In the top 40 Xbox 360 chart, Sonic Generations fell six places from No.6 to No.12, while in the top 30 PS3 chart, the game dropped just three places from No.6 to No.9.
With big titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception released last week and more heavy hitters to come, Sonic Generations may find itself struggle to grab sales. We’ll update you next Monday with this week’s sales chart results for Sonic Generations and Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, which is released this Friday on Wii in Europe.
