Several images hit the Internet yesterday taking the Sonic community by storm. The first screenshots of Biowares upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog RPG for DS had been included in the latest issue of Americans popular ‘Nintendo Power’ magazine.
Boasting beautiful hand-drawn backgrounds, Sonic-looking environments and all our favourite characters, the screenshots are a perfect example of how a classic RPG should look. But this time involving Sonic. Continue reading Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood revealed

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity is shipping for the Wii and PS2 today in the US, for an MSRP of $49.99.
Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity is the sequel to original Sonic Riders from 2006. This game, like the last, features a variety of characters from the Sonic-verse (as well as a few from other Sonic Team franchises) racing each other on upgradeable airboards called “Extreme Gear”. This game changes things up, by replacing the air gauge from the original game with Gravity control. This new ability allows you to change the center of gravity on the course, turning what had once been a wall into a new track. This can be used to find shortcuts and get an edge on your opponent. The game features twice as many courses, 16 in all, as well as 18 character and sixty vehicles. It has three multiplayer modes: Free race, World Grand Prix, and survival. The Wii version also comes with a “ghost mode” which allows you to download ghosts of other players online that you can race on the course.
Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity should arrive in Europe sometime next month. We’ll let you know when it ships.

Also video game store GAME have revealed what looks to be the official box art for Sega Superstars Tennis (Wii). No other versions box art is up at present.
Thanks to Keiji Dragon for informing everyone of the trademark at the SSMB and thanks to Hogfather for the heads up and informing about the box art.

Sonic composer extraordinaire Jun Senoue gave visitors to his website a nice surprise on Christmas Day as he announced a new ‘Best Of’ compilation album, to be released soon in Japan. No information has been revealed other than the title, ‘True Blue’, the fact that it has 21 tracks and the rumour it may well include the ‘Open Your Heart’ Remix from Lee Brotherton that had ears wagging way back in 2006. Takashi Izuka has said in an interview with German site G-Wie-Gorilla that he think’s Nintendo’s machine was the right choice for NiGHTS and if they make a future installment it will be for Wii.
“When we decided to finally make a sequel to NiGHTS, we didn’t know which console it would be for,” he recalled. “We only decided later on that we would develop the game for the Wii. But I think it was a good choice – should we make another instalment, we would make it for the Wii.”
The new Wii game NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams has seen a mix of positive and negative reviews so far with it’s Japan and US launches but with the European release soon and the NiGHTS into Dreams port to PS2 hitting Japan soon we won’t count the jester out just yet.

The official Japanese Sonic Riders: Shooting Star Story website has updated with three new characters.
Now added to the Characters page are Dr. Eggman, Nights, and “Emy” (lol, Engrish). We of course knew about Nights already, but it’s nice to have Amy and Eggman confirmed, and with some spiffy new CG art, too.
I’ll keep checking the site for more updates as the launch date draws near.
12/19/07 EDIT: Profiles of Shadow, Rouge, and Cream added as of yesterday. Also added is a new Extreme Gear section, which features previously-unseen Wheel and Yacht Gear types and what appears to be a listing of power-ups.

If your looking for a Sonic fix on Xbox 360 or PS3 this Christmas, don’t expect to find it in your local high street or shopping centre. Many major video game retailers in the UK have now removed stock of Sonic the Hedgehog for Xbox 360/PS3 from their shelves. Stores include: GAME, Gamestation, HMV, Zavvi, Currys/Digital and Comet.
Many online retailers have stopped listing the game too or have it listed as ‘Out of stock’. Gamestation’s site had it listed as ‘Out of stock’ this morning and removed the game this afternoon. Some online retailers still have it in stock at very cheap clearance type prices.
- HMV’s website lists both formats currently out of stock;
- Zavvi’s website lists both formats at clearance type prices;
- AmazonUK only list it by other sellers and no longer sell it themselves now;
- GAME’s website list the PS3 version as ‘Stock alert’
- Gamestation’s website listed both formats this morning as ‘Out of stock’ and now this afternoon it is no longer listed but replaced with “No results” messages.

Now that the Activision Blizzard emergence is over Mike Hayes president of Sega Europe has told MCV their company could be next to acquire another company.
With Mario and Sonic reaching the Chart track number 1 spot Sega have obviously benefited from deals with another company, so can they bring in a similar result again if they acquire a company?
Here are Mike Hayes quotes from the article:

Not exactly pertaining to Sonic, but we all like to know just how well Naoto Ohshima is getting on since he separated himself from SEGA to form Artoon some years ago. Turns out the original character designer is teaming up with Mistwalker’s Hironobu Sakaguchi to create an action RPG for the Nintendo DS called Away.
Not a lot of details are known about the game, as it has just been revealed in the latest issue of Famitsu in Japan. What we do know is that it involves rescuing helpless villages from underground dungeons – with the environments changing every so often, forcing you to constantly adapt to your surroundings. Rescuing more people will expand the village and open up new events and secrets too, we’re told.
Sounds like an interesting concept, we’ll be keeping our eyes on this one.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is the best selling game in the UK at the moment – increasing SEGA’s chances for a Christmas #1.
Traditionally, Electronic Arts developed titles have dominated UK sales charts throughout December. This has been the case for the last four years, and looked to be true in 2007 when Need For Speed: ProStreet edged into the top spot last week.
But the unlikely collaboration of two of video gaming’s greatest icons appear to have charmed British audiences, as today it has been revealed that Mario & Sonic jumped five places to take the Gold. Odd, considering there aren’t any actual Wii’s to go around…
Next week will be the prized Christmas Week. Can SEGA keep on top of the tree riding the Wiimania that’s sweeping the country, or will EA climb up and claim its star back?

There is also an opportunity to see Radio 1 DJs Dick and Dom battle it out on the big screen, and no doubt get a snap of yourself with Sonic and Mario themselves. Try not to clothesline Mario though.

Gaming website 1up.com has caught up on a large backlog of Virtual Console reviews. Among these are reviews for Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic the Hedgehog 3. As for 3D Blast, we could all care less, but Sonic 3 gets…
… A THUMBS DOWN?!
Citing “messy level designs”, “dull and forgettable enemies”, and a “tepid soundtrack”, among other complaints, the blasphemous esteemed writers at 1up apparently don’t feel that the Genesis/Mega Drive classic is worth the Wii Points.
Now, I’m not advocating a mass protest… yet… but I think 1up should be made aware of exactly what we think of this game that they describe as “decent”. To arms! To arms!

I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing more exciting than a CD of unreleased material and remixes!
