With a decade under his belt, Adam is one of The Sonic Stadium's most seasoned writers, with interests in the music and merchandise of the Sonic the Hedgehog universe. Adam is the co-organiser for the Summer of Sonic convention.
Today’s Sonic Central reveled a whole host of new merchandise for Sonic collectors out there, even our heads are still spinning!
Just in case you missed it, here’s our whistle-stop tour of what we can expect in the coming weeks and months!
#MakeLEGOSonicMoreEggman
We saw Eggman take over LEGO HQ, and showcase not only a new and improved LEGO Eggman figure (they even got in on the joke no one liked the brick Eggman), but Sonic, Tails, and Amy to boot as well. There are 5 sets on the way, including Sonic’s Speed Sphere, a monster Green Hill Zone set, and a Death Egg Robot!
What a Croc
Love ’em or hate ’em, Crocs have collaborated with Sonic to prouce some Sonic-red clogs which you can customise with official Sonic Jibbitz™ charms.
They’ve missed a trick not doing Vector-themed ones though.
An Egg For Trying Times
The Jakks Pacific merchandise keeps coming thick and fast at the moment, and the line up just got even bigger – figuratively and literally – with the Death Egg Playset!
The monster sphere features an internal playset in which Sonic can grind on rails and battle against Dr. Eggman. We think this would look great hanging from your ceiling.
Ice Cap
For those heading out to enjoy a picnic in the sun, the sixteen-bit style Playmate cooler from Igloo for those wanting to keep their Sonic ice creams cool on the go. 623 coolers purchased today will include an exclusive Sonic sticker/decal, so get yer skates on.
Hyper Sonic
Boutique clothers Hypland are bringing a range of apparel to market that feature deisgns that cover a huge range of designs from across the Sonic time and space. The collection includes shirts, hats…and even rugs.
If you are local to LA, check out the launch at the pop-up Hypeland store; if not, the collection will be available online on June the 26th.
Sonic vs. Shadow
At long last! Lifted straight from Sonic Adventure 2 artwork comes a statue of epic proportions from new brand S-Fire. This Sonic and Shadow statue begins pre-orders today, but comes in at a rather hefty ¥44,000 ($300) before shipping, so this one is for the serious collectors. It does look awesome though.
ESP Guitars will be releasing another Sonic the Hedgehog-themed guitar later this year. The brand have released guitars before (including copies of the iconic guitars used by Jun Senoue) but have come with a premium price – this one looks to be aimed at fans with a more modest budget.
More details soon!
HOLD!
The Cable Guys (not the Jim Carrey film) are adding two modern era Sonic figures to their controller stand line in the form of Sonic the Hedgehog and Shadow the Hedgehog.
They can also hold other things!
Stay tuned for more merchandise updates!

SEGA’s twitter account gave us a sneak peak inside of their brand spanking new refurbished offices in the Tokyo office, which now have a distinctly Sonical theme!
Sonic Team veteran artist Kazuyuki Hoshino was part of the team working on the project, which includes 6 themed conference rooms along with a space for seasonal artwork to be displayed.
Check out each of the spaces and their unique artwork in the video above!

Developers Evening Star, made up of the team behind Sonic Mania, have revealed their first novel IP title, Penny’s Big Breakaway!
Showcased during today’s Nintendo Direct, the title see’s the player take control of the title’s namesake Penny, navigating their way through obsticles and tackling hordes of penguins.
While we only have 90 seconds of footage to go off, fans will no doubt see a lot of the Mania team’s DNA in the art direction throughout, alongside some unique gameplay gimmicks and stages.
We can’t wait to find out more!

Well strike us down if the hits just don’t keep on coming with Sonic Superstars! Your eyes don’t deceive you – after a many-year hiatus, everyone’s favourite Wolf/Gerboa is back as an antagonist in the upcoming 2D Classic Sonic game. And this time, it sounds like he has a friend; designed by none other than the original designer of Sonic himself!
Fang the Sniper (or Nack the Weasel, as the character was known in the West during the 1990s) was a sneaky gun-toting foe of Sonic’s that originally appeared in the Game Gear classic, Sonic Triple Trouble. Besides a brief stint in spinoff game Sonic the Fighters, however, the character has not been seen or recognised in the franchise since. So for big Fang fans (like me!), his return as an enemy in Sonic Superstars is super exciting!
But if you’re quick you can also spot him sneaking about at the very start of the trailer too!
What’s more, is that a press release for the game has revealed that original Sonic designer Naoto Ohshima is on board with SEGA and Sonic Team to create a brand new character that Sonic and his friends will have to face. We are taking this to mean that whoever this mysterious new foe is will be teaming up with Fang in some way as well (after all, the Weasel does like to have a contingency plan in place!).
We’ll share more details about Sonic Superstars as we get it!

SEGA have today announced a brand new 2D Sonic the Hedgehog title, Sonic Superstars, which will hit consoles later in the year.
According to the press release:
Sonic Superstars™, an all-new Sonic the Hedgehog game bringing a new standard of play to classic high-speed 2D Sonic platforming. In Sonic Superstars, Sonic and his friends’ journey starts on the beautiful North Star Islands, a mystical place offering never-before-seen environments, as well as a mysterious story waiting to unfold.
— Sonic the Hedgehog (@sonic_hedgehog) June 8, 2023
Here’s everything you need to know about the game!
1. Ohshima is Back!
That’s right, our favourite Sonic the Hedgehog co-creator is back at the helm on this new Sonic title! Who could be better than Sonic’s dad to be at the helm?
Ohshima-san is overseeing the fresh new 3D look of this platformer.
2. Fang the Sniper is also back!
We were a bit giddy at this news (especially Adam – Fang is his fave!), but the purple peril will be armed with his cork-gun and undoubtedly causing trouble for our heroes!
You’ll have to wait until the end of the trailer to see him (unless you really have eagle-eyes!) but it is well worth it – he even arrives in his own vehicle, the Marvellous Queen!
3. A Whole New World
Sonic and his friends will be travelling to the new environment of North Star Islands, a “mystical place offering never-before-seen environments, as well as a mysterious story waiting to unfold”.
4. The Number of Characters!
That’s right! FOUR CHARACTERS in the initial roster. From the teaser trailer, it looks like players will be able to take control of Amy Rose, alongside our regular trio.
In addition to this, it looks like as a first for a 2D Sonic title, you can play as all characters simultaneously! Awesome (but I still get to be Sonic, you can be Tails).
5. New Abilities Ahoy!
Sonic and pals will be making full use of some pseudo-3D features, such as wall running and waterfall climbing in this new installment. Undoubtedly each character looks to have some unique abilities – such as an ability to clone!
6. Special Stages on Steroids
We get a brief glimpse at the new Special Stages in Sonic Superstars, that look to take notes from some of the original rotating zones from the original title.
In addition to that, it looks as though there will also be 3D environments in some special stages through which the player must navigate dangers.
7. Pac Man Fever
While the new game will make use of 3D models and assets, the game will also give nods back to the classic 16-bit look as well.
Oddly, we also see our heroes transform into jellyfish characters, vaguely reminiscent of the ghosts from Pac Man. Why do they transform? We are yet to find out!
8. Let’s Get Physical
The game will be released both digitally and Physically across all major platforms for the RRP of $59.99, so those of you looking to invest in a hard copy won’t have to wait for, say, Sonic Superstars Plus!
Are you folks excited? We certainly are!

The artwork that has graced the covers of the IDW Sonic the Hedgehog series has been nothing short of spectacular – and the piece to be used for issue 59 is no exception!
Artist Natalie Haines has chosen to put down the digital pen in favour of the brush, to create this spectacular 3′ x 2′ acrylic on canvas piece.
Haines took cues from Renaissance masters, citing on Twitter it had always been a hope to create something in a more academic style.
I took lots of inspiration from classic paintings, and also specifically from “The Fallen Angel” by Alexandre Cabanel for Shadow himself.
Natalie Haines
I think we can all agree this piece is nothing short of spectacular!
IDW Sonic the Hedgehog issue 59 will be available from the 29th of March 2023.

Our friends over at Sonic Merch News have spotted two new action figures being added to the JAKKS Pacific Sonic line up, with a decidedly Sonic Adventure theme!

A tweet from @Bibouboul today shows two show-goers watching an in-game scene with the massive mouser alongside Sonic, who appears to have a fishing rod in hand.
While there is no official confirmation as to Big’s role in the game, it does tease elements of the fishing game that is purported to be returning to the series.

New footage seen from Summer Game Fest appears to confirm that Sky Sanctuary will feature as one of the Cyberspace stages in Sonic Frontiers.
New images from the show, shared by Saihati72 on twitter, appear to confirm the Sonic & Knuckles stage, revisited in Sonic Generations, through the presence of the ascending Death Egg in the background.
While the zoomed-in footage is of low resolution, the image of the Death Egg is now undeniable.
A new look at a cyberspace level from Sonic Frontiers. seems like Sky Sanctuary with the Death Egg being in the background, seemingly confirming the reuse of level themes and assets from Sonic Generations. #SonicFrontierspic.twitter.com/lahxd2mEFA
Fans have been quick to point out previously that there are many similarities to the Generations design, to the point that it appears Frontiers may be using recycled assets from the 11 year-old title.
UPDATE: Another Twitter user has shared a second video that displays the stage a little clearer in the background. Thanks to ‘JL’ via email for the news tip!

The second Sonic the Hedgehog Movie is absolutely jam-packed with references to the games and even a nod to one of Ben Schwartz’s previous shows, Parks and Recreation. In addition to these, there are a plethora of movie references and tropes featuring throughout the 2-hour run time. While some of these are very obvious (such as Officer Wade Whipple’s referral to Ghostbusters’ infamous candy Kaiju, The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man), some will only have been spotted by the most avid movie buffs! Below are our 7 favourite subtle movie references in Sonic’s latest cinema outing…
Be warned – movie spoilers ahead!!!
Klaatu Barada Nikto!
Before Knuckles makes his appearance through the ring, Dr Robotnik welcomes the three nameless warriors with the very strange greetings of “Klaatu Barada Nikto!”. Classic sci-fi fans will know this as the famous phrase that originated in the 1951 film The Day the Earth Stood Still – uttered to pacify the giant robot Gort and prevent him from destroying the world. Ironic considering the final act of the movie!
That Slide
Sonic sets about trashing the Wachowski household minutes after Tom and Maddie depart for Hawaii, starting with a slide into the living room with his back to the camera. Those with a keen knowledge of 80’s coming-of-age flicks will recognise this as a homage to the underwear dance scene from 1983’s Risky Business performed by a young Tom Cruise, in which Cruise’s character Joel has also just been left home alone in his parents’ house.
Witching Hour
Margaret Hamilton, the mother of Hamilton Meserve, plays the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz.
When Robotnik returns to Earth at night and confronts Sonic in the Wachowski house he threatens Sonic, finishing his line with “…AND YOUR LITTLE DOG TOO!”. The quote references the threat given by the Wicked Witch of the West to Dorothy in the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz. The threat is often used as a trope when a villain wants to prove how evil they are.
The name of the Wachowski family dog? Ozzy, of course.
Cast Away
Robotnik’s descent into complete madness when he is exiled to the Mushroom Planet is staved off when he creates a replica Agent Stone out of, well, a stone. This bears semblance to 2000’s Cast Away, in which Tom Hank’s character Chuck creates an inanimate companion, Wilson, from a flotsam Volleyball after being marooned on a remote uninhabited island.
“It’s derivative!”
Knuckles and Robotnik’s navigation through the Labyrinth Zone sees the two antagonists chased down corridor by a huge boulder. While this has most certainly become an adventure movie and video game trope, the idea originated in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the first Indiana Jones movie. The trope doesn’t go unnoticed by Robotnik, as he says “I refuse to die like this; it’s derivative!”
The 8th Wonder
During the fight between our heroes and the Death Egg Robot and shortly before the destruction of the biplane, Robotnik begins to mockingly swipe at Tails as he manoeuvres around the mechanical juggernaut. This is of course a tribute to the 1933 classic King Kong, in which the final scene sees the colossus batting away attacking Curtis Helldiver biplanes.
Home Run
The second Sonic movie ends where the first started in the Green Hills baseball field, with our protagonist getting his wish of having others to play with. After Knuckles’ “Power bump” that sees him hit a home run, a familiar horn riff plays as declares his conquering of the bases. Soundtrack enthusiasts will recognise this as the theme to 1983’s The Natural, Barry Levinson’s love letter to one of America’s favourite sports.

GamesRadar recently caught up with Sonic Team’s head Takashi Iizuka, to talk about what we can expect from the new Sonic the Hedgehog mainline title, due later this year.
While Iizuka remains tight-lipped about the detail of he drops tid-bits of information in the interview, including the introduction of “new combat styles” in the 2022 release.
GamesRadar were particularly probing about what Sonic Team have meant about “Open-zone freedom” and if this is the same as fully open world, but Iizuka still remains evasive:
“One of the biggest questions hanging over Sonic Frontiers is whether it will be set throughout a fully open world or whether the various biomes of Starfall Islands will be self-contained. SEGA has been careful with its language so far, referring to the 2022 release as being set in the ‘franchise’s first ever open-zone-inspired experience’ or explaining that it will offer ‘open-zone freedom’. When I ask Iizuka for clarity, he’s only willing to confirm that further details will be coming soon: “We don’t have too much more to share regarding the environment just yet, but stay tuned for more details this year.”

The announcement, via trailer, introduces players to some rather hillarious looking layered armour for you and your buddies to give you feline friend the appearance of Sonic, or your huge wolf dressed up in a Tails-themed “Canyne Tails” costume.
