What Up With That?: Sonic Classic Collection

Ooooooooooo weeeeeeee… what up with that?

It’s official… Sonic Classic Collection is coming to the Nintendo DS (I’m surprised that SEGA has not run out of names for their Sonic compilations).  The Genesis games have been whored-out onto every console and gadget, including my grandfather’s pacemaker and the Atari 2600.  It was inevitable  that Nintendo’s best-selling handheld would get in on the action.

Today on “What Up With That?,” we’re not going to ask why SEGA keeps repackaging the Genesis Sonic games (because it has been made perfectly clear that they love to make money through exerting minimal effort), but looking at these screenshots that they have put out with their press release.  Questions have been floating around many a Sonic forum over the past day or two, so hit the break to recap all the weirdness: Continue reading What Up With That?: Sonic Classic Collection

How I Celebrated My “Sonic 2sday”

1124092240-00

I know that this blog post runs a little late, but right after my “Sonic 2sday” festivities, I boarded a plane and went home for Thanksgiving.  I was unable to get any of these pictures (or this story, for that matter) up due to turkey-induced funtime.  With that said, I hope that everybody had a fantastic and safe holiday weekend.

With it being another Sonic 2sday and all, I decided to call people over to celebrate.  What sucks was that most people had all left my little college town for Thanksgiving break, which started that day.  Despite only two people there to experience the retro-themed get-together, it was still a fun time.

Happy 17th Birthday, Sonic 2!

sonic2enhancedck4

We have had a lot of Sonic 2 stories on TSS lately, what with it launching on new platforms and going on sale.  Yesterday, a TSS staffer reminded me that today was the 17th anniversary of the NA/EU release date of Sonic 2.  It all made sense then.  Let’s take a trip down memory lane again, eh?

With Sonic 1 establishing a rabid fanbase waiting for the next game in the series, the announcement of Sonic 2 made myself and the rest of the gaming world go bananas.  When November 24th, 1992 came around, my uncle was one of the first in line (he’s only 15 years older than I am and he owned the Genesis… it was like having a much cooler older brother).  Once we got back to his place, “Sonic 2sday” became one of the best days ever.

There was a new character in Miles “Tails” Prower, a new move, a plethora of new stages, new enemies, new bosses, and fantastic music.  There was also a 2 player mode that we could not stop playing!  We couldn’t ask for anything more.  We played it for about three days straight.

Years later, I’d stumble across this dank corner of the internet known as the Sonic community.  Prototypes uncovered lost levels and added to the mystique and grandeur of the game.  I was playing Sonic 2 all over again to experience what could have been.

In celebration of today, we ask you to check out our recently recovered Sonic 2 section.  Videos and screenshots await you.

I’ll leave it at the following video, the famous 3D version of the Sonic 2 ending that we’ve shown here a few times:

Best Buy Black Friday: Buy A 360, Get “Sonic 360”

g301

Hey, my American brosks, I have good news.  Sonic the Hedgehog for the X360 is now at a “best buy:” free.

On Black Friday, that famed day after Thanksgiving where mothers kill each other over a laughing muppet, those in the U.S. can head on down to Best Buy and get an X360 Elite and six games, including the infamous Sonic the Hedgehog.

Xbox 360 bundle: Numerically, Best Buy pulled together an even better deal for gamers eying a new Xbox 360. But reviews may say differently. This Black Friday deal includes the high-end Elite console and six games, all for $299. The Xbox itself is a great value, with more online features than the PS3, a larger catalog of games, and a higher install base – so more of your friends are likely to own one. But the six selected games are a little weak. Here’s the list (with review scores from Metacritic): Sonic the Hedgehog (46 percent), Spider Man: Web of Shadows (68), Wall-E (50), LEGO Batman (76), Pure (85), Ghost Recon 2 (86).

So, if you don’t own a X360, want one, and like this game, you can get it at a steal with the purchase of a console.  If you don’t own a X360, want one, and are curious to play this trainwreck, then it’s at a reasonable price of zero dollars and zero cents.

BlueTube: Help Me Un-Watch This Video

I just got linked to this about an hour ago.  Nothing says “YouTube Disaster” more than Sonic cosplay.

Basically, the premise here is that Sonic is down on his luck because all of his games have sucked.  He has no job, no money, no credit… no nothing.  Then he gets mocked by kids on a playground.  How can you save him?  Well, since this video was made a little over a year ago, you were supposed to buy an “actual good game,” Sonic Unleashed.  Sonic is still stuck in that playground.

I had a good laugh at its craptacularness (and the TV with a ring taped on it… but mostly its craptacularness).

Green Hill + Green Hill = Euphoric

Just a quicky for you guys here on a chill Sunday.  I stumbled upon this Green Hill mash-up earlier and I thought that it sounded like the greatest thing ever.  YouTube user, Akuago220, combines the original Green Hill orchestration on the Genesis and lays it over the updated version found in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.

It’s ear sex, man.

The latest Sonic remix to hit OCRemix, the popular video game music site, is a funky remix of Hydrocity Zone by Dr. Manhattan.  “Down to Hydrocity’s Nightclub” takes the already catchy tune of Sonic 3’s high-speed water level and throws in some killer organ licks, screaming brass, drum fills, and some dirty bass grooves.  This remix is one that you want in your playlist.

Emulation Nation: Sonic CD on PSPgo

A team of hackers known as “Team Typhoon” have apparently enabled homebrew on the new PSPgo.  The video above showcases a Genesis emulator running Sonic CD, which is super cool.  Even if you were one of the few who purchased the new handheld, however, Team Typhoon will never be releasing their custom firmware.  In a silly disclaimer, Team Typhoon says:

This video is for bragging rights ONLY (since it’s very cool nowadays) and shows our Proof of Concept 6.10 Custom Firmware running on the PSPgo. This will never be released to the general public or anyone else at all whether you are a dev or not, this is Team Typhoon internal material, we have no reason whatsoever to waste a perfectly good exploit.

What douchebags.

The shirts runs at an affordable $17.95 plus shipping.

SEGA Amusements USA Unveils “Sonic All-Star Sports” for Arcades

Sega_SonicSportsGamesSonic is now going to be shooting and scoring in more ways than one.  SEGA Amusements USA in Elk Grove Villiage, Illinois will be showcasing the brand new Sonic-themed arcade games at the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions show in Las Vegas later this month.  The first two games in the “Sonic All-Star Sports” line will be air hockey and basketball.

“Many people have been wanting Sega to come up with much more traditional redemption sports games such as basketball and air hockey,” said Sega Amusements USA president and COO Paul Williams.

Air hockey features chasing LEDs for when players score and a scratch-free surface.  Basketball features varying levels of difficulty and can be linked up with other cabinets for 16-person multiplayer.  Look out for more sports arcade attractions in this new series in the future.

Mildly Amusing Sonic Slot Car Racing

dsc01634

The dudes over at Emerald Coast have a review up of the latest Sonic merchandise from Impact Innovations, “The Super Sonic Racing System.”  Impact Innovations’ products have been featured on this site before, as they have been responsible for some sweet backpacks and plushes over the past year.  Is “FOUR FOOT OF ACTION” enough for your £10?  Emerald Coast says “not really.”

Once the nostalgia of the classic figures wears off, this slot car set is pretty unremarkable due to its short track length, slow speed, and technical issues (such as Sonic’s car always flying off the track).  Emerald Coast strictly recommends this set to be for the kids and the hardcore collectors.

Sonic Mayhem Continues 8-Bit Greatness

You’ve seen countless Genesis and Advance-styled Sonic fangames, but there is only one project out there that is channeling the look and feel of the 8-bit adventures.  I’ve talked about Sonic Mayhem before and I have been always one to praise the project.  Over the weekend, the project’s lead, Amesuki, has released a short demo, pictures of the new zones, and a gameplay video.

The brief demo (download here) runs for about a minute and, to me, is a picture perfect re-creation of the 8-bit Sonic games.  The music, the graphics, and the physics all feel correct.  I just wish it were longer!

Check the video for gameplay of one of the best fangames around and hit the break for screenshots of other levels.

If you love Sonic and laughter, there is no excuse for you not to watch “Sonic Abridged: Episode 1.”

The series aims to take episodes from Sonic X and make them shorter and funnier.  Most importantly, “Sonic Abridged” turns the entire episode on its head with hilarious voice acting, a random array of sound effects, and a bevy of obscure internet references.  If it’s one thing I like more than watching Sonic X, it’s making fun of it.

Highlights include: Cheese, Knuckles’ indifference, and “wouldn’t it be weird if I mutated into a giant, butt-ugly werewolf thing?”

Plus, Psyguy is the main man behind it all, so you know that it’s quality.  Watch it, foo’.

On the Go: The Best Mobile Sonic Titles

header_sonicWith SEGA’s ever-growing presence in the mobile gaming industry comes more and more Sonic the Hedgehog-themed affairs to drop a few bucks on.  Sonic has been jumping, golfing, and karting on the go for a few years now, but which of these outings are worth your spare time and money?

Since I’ve been playing all of them lately on the bus, in-between classes and, uh, in classes, I can let you know what’s legit.  If you haven’t caught the pattern by now, SEGA is of the belief that people who love Sonic will follow him into any game genre.  Not all are winners, so if you like killing short amounts of time on your phone, like I do, then pay attention to which games have actual effort put behind them.

I will only be touching base with the original titles.  The ports of Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 have been discussed on The Sonic Stadium before and are guaranteed winners.

Sonic Jump/Sonic Jump 2

Sonic-jump-2-01Eggman’s out to destroy the world and the only way to go is up.

While most assholes will complain about the game lacking “that trademark Sonic speed,” both Sonic Jump games are accessible, mildly amusing mobile games that happen to feature Sonic the Hedgehog.  Both games play exactly the same and involve moving Sonic left and right, bouncing on platforms to reach the top of the stage.  You are always bouncing upwards and the wrong move could send you crashing to the ground, costing you a life.

The controls are as straightforward as the game looks.  Move left and right, with the center button initiating a “super jump” that allows Sonic to extend the vertical distance of his regular jump.  The controls are not an issue, but the game’s difficulty can get on your nerves in the later levels.  You are going to die… a lot.  Later levels, especially, require many replays to memorize where platforms are going to appear as you ascend.  The blue booster rings (as seen in the picture above) allow you to skip chunks of the levels, but when their boost runs out, it can be tricky to get your bearings and find the next platform.

If you only have enough money for one, go with the sequel.  The graphics are much better.  Those of you with high-end phones will especially enjoy the level art and catchy-as-all-hell music.  In North America, however, I’ve noticed that we only are able to download Sonic Jump, but in reality, it’s Sonic Jump 2.  Be aware of that confusion.

Video of Sonic Jump 2.

Sonic Golf

sonic_the_hedgehog_golf_176x208_4255_ss3At first glance, this looks like a game where SEGA’s “slap Sonic on everything” strategy gets a little crazy.  Get your eyes checked, because this game is the shit.

Easily being the Sonic mobile game that I’ve played the most, given that it can be played with one hand, Sonic Golf takes you through the oh-so-whored-out stages of the Genesis games as you try to whack your balls (+10 if you giggled) to the signpost.  For a golf game, it is rather unique in its side-scrolling presentation, as most revert to a top down view to illustrate where the ball is heading.  Adding Sonic’s trademark monitor power-ups and hazards and you have a golf game like no other.

There is little to no learning curve on the controls, as it’s your standard golf affair of adjusting your spin, aim, and power.  Plus, there are many difficulty settings to keep you coming back for more outings.  Sonic Golf is a fantastic golf game that keeps true to the Sonic spirit.

Sonic Unleashed Mobile

Hooollllyyyyy shiiiiiit.  The only, original, traditional Sonic game for mobile phones is the mobile version of Sonic Unleashed. I enjoyed it more than the console version.  The Werehog, in spite of this praise, still chugs dongs.

When people discuss this game, the graphics is usually brought up first, and for good reason.  The graphics are original throughout and are gorgeous.  I’m surprised that this game hasn’t been considered for ports to a console download service or DSiWare yet, because it looks the part.

Gameloft, the game’s publisher, nailed the breakneck gameplay of the daytime stages of Sonic Unleashed, even if there are a few hiccups when you tear through the levels.  There are alternate routes, secret areas, and excellent level designs to be found here!  Gameloft also managed to perfectly translate the Werehog’s gameplay to the second-dimension.  By “perfect,” I mean that they captured that essence of suck and button-mashing boredom from the console version and replicated it for mobile phones.  Button-mashing does not work for mobile games, as it will destroy the buttons.  I have to use that “5” key to dial Jenny, damnit!  The spin dash during the daytime stages did away with button-mashing when powering it up for that reason, so that’s a few more days that I’ll have my “5” key in-tact.

In short, Sonic Unleashed Mobile is one-half incredible, one-half “Sorry you had to follow SEGA’s game design, Gameloft.”  It’s still worth your money, though, for the the former half.

Competent Games With “Sonic” In the Title

This category is for the half-dozen or so games that are just like every other mobile version of some activity, but this time, Sonic is on the title screen.  These aren’t bad games, but they lack the creativity that Sonic Golf showcases.  Take, for instance, Sonic Darts:

sonicdarts_2_1117253807_640w

Not very Sonic-y, right?  Still, the game isn’t horrible for this reason alone.  It just feels like a lack of initiative on the developer’s part to take advantage of the Sonic license.  Though, I don’t know what direction you could take a game like darts or billiards, but that doesn’t excuse the developers from not trying at all.

Above average representations of everyday games with “Sonic” in the title include: Sonic Darts, Sonic Billiards, Sonic Hearts, Sonic Bowling, and Sonic Casino Poker.

Well, that’s it.  If you know of a mobile Sonic game that wasn’t mentioned above, it’s because I could not play it on my phone or that I did play it and thought it sucked.  I’m looking at you Sonic At the Olympic Games, you boring tap-fest you.

If you’re angry, because I took another verbal dump on the werehog, I divert your attention to Daniel.  Your comments will be deleted if you want to be a tool and complain about how I don’t like Unleashed.  If you haven’t noticed, since the commenters here are so intelligent, I do not care for your opinions as much as you care about mine.

Happy 20th, SEGA Genesis!

Twenty years ago, on August 14th, 1989, SEGA’s most successful console debuted in North America to challenge Nintendo for dominance in the fourth-generation of console gaming.  Without the console’s success, we wouldn’t be here right now talking about motherfuckin’ blue hedgehogs.

While the SEGA Master System was superior to the Nintendo Entertainment System with better graphics and sound, the console failed to establish a library of games to rival the NES’ stellar collection in anywhere but Europe.  So, in 1989, two years before the launch of the Super Nintendo, SEGA debuted the Genesis with mild success.  Shipping only 400,000 units in its first year, SoA CEO Michael Katz introduced his two part solution to boost sales.  The famous “Genesis Does What Nintendon’t” slogan and, my personal favorite, the use of celebrities in games, like Arnold Palmer Golf and Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker.

It wasn’t until 1991 when Sonic the Hedgehog changed the gaming landscape forever.  Originally, the awful Altered Beast was the pack-in game with the console, but a bold move by SEGA CEO Hayao Nakayama put Sonic the Hedgehog in the box instead.  With critics claiming that the ‘hog was starring in the best game made thus far, people waiting for the Super Nintendo were convinced and bought a Genesis.  Genesis took a 55% market share over Nintendo soon after.

However, the success was short lived as SEGA drove their biggest success into the ground with the SEGA CD and 32X add-ons.  These disasters failed to establish a solid library of games and were too expensive.  With five consoles actively on the market with the Saturn’s launch (Game Gear, Genesis, Saturn, Pico, and the Master System in South America), SEGA discontinued the production of the Genesis.  With the Genesis outselling the Saturn in North America, the results were disastrous as Nintendo took total control of the 16-bit generation.  The rest is history and now we have Mario and Sonic running triatholons together.

My older brother got the Genesis with Sonic the Hedgehog for his birthday.  I was only three years old when this happened, so my first Genesis memory that I can recall is playing Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and getting trapped in Casino Night Zone.  Those were some fun times.

If you have any Genesis/16-bit Sonic memories of your own, please share them with us in the comment box below to celebrate the Genesis’ 20th birthday.

SAGE Spotlight: Sonic Robo Blast 2

Review by Kain of SFGHQ, Submitted to TSS

As a preface to this review, I will say that I am being particularly harsh in my criticisms of this game, because I feel no need to patronize this team or treat the game as “just a fangame,” mostly because of its enormous size, publicity, and history.  I’m also sore because I get motion sickness from playing jerky 3D games and am being doing it for spite from all the physical pain it put me through.  On to the review…Sonic Robo Blast 2 is a project that has been in development for over a decade and it shows.  In the eyes of many fangamers, including this one, it’s in a class of its own.  The volume of content and detail in this game is incredible.  It is and it feels like a full game.  However, it’s far from feeling like a complete game, as there are a large number of truly unfortunate glaring flaws with this game which keep me from really enjoying it. SAGE Spotlight: Time Twisted

Last year, I reviewed a game that I’ve been following for quite some time, Sonic: Time Twisted.  While I was happy with prior versions, the 2008 demo was surprisingly mediocre and annoying.  Overbound (Bryce Stock), the game’s creator surely took notice at the comments and reviews left by the community and gave Time Twisted a much needed, and appreciated, make-over.  With one full zone of this new hotness available to play, there are many improvements to see.

dispotdriveGone is the game’s original first zone, City Edge.  In its place, we get “Dispot Drive.”  At first glace, I was somewhat shaky about the quality of this demo solely based on the use of the non-existant word “dispot” in the zone’s name.  Within the first thirty seconds of playing, however, my doubts were cast aside and the game looked, felt, and sounded like a drastic improvement over previous builds.

Time Twisted is designed to be a spiritual successor to Sonic CD, so with that connection comes the “bulgy-polygonal-pattern” foreground.  The yellow diamond foreground is much better than the strange pattern that City Edge, but shades on the side of “too bulgy.”  The foreground can sometimes be a bother on the eyes for always bulging out and providing few opportunities for flat or caved-in tiling.  Otherwise, the graphics are consistent, clean, and one of the best out there in Sonic fangaming.

ddzpastThe slippery controls of previous builds have been left in the past, as the game feels tighter and a bit more like Sonic CD.  While not perfect Sonic physics, they are not game-breaking in the slightest and are tight enough to get you through the experience.  I just wish that jump was mapped to a different key, because the space bar is slightly uncomfortable to me.

One thing that hasn’t improved is time travel.  The means of how you leap through time is now different than Sonic CD‘s, but there’s still no point to it.  I will pose the same question as I did last year: What purpose is there to go back in time?  I need a reason to travel, like destroying a roboticizer or something, or else the mechanic is just a gimmick that would eventually wear on me if the demo was longer.  Everything needs a purpose and time travel still does not have one.

metalsonicTime Travel also becomes aggravating due to the aforementioned new method of activating it.  Rather than hitting a post and hitting high speeds for a set amount of time, Time Twisted throws you into the past/future once you hit a timepost.  There’s no option, like Sonic CD, to time travel.  As a result, the game stops to send you back in time with each time-post that you pass and all you will hear is the first ten to twenty seconds of each time period’s music.

Speaking of the music, it’s still great.  LarkSS, the game’s composer, has created past/present tunes that complement each other nicely, like the Sonic CD soundtracks.  Sound effects wise, the game did away with the “click” sound for when Sonic lands on his feet and that makes the experience leagues better.

Everybody can learn a lesson from Overbound.  He is a guy who had his project assailed with harsh criticism, got upset, but still managed to get up and come back stronger the following year.  It can only get better from here, so keep up the good work, Overbound.

Touch Arcade Talks Sonic CD With Taxman

nav_upper

The Taxman, real name Christian Whitehead, sat down with portable gaming website Touch Arcade to discuss his Sonic CD proof-of-concept port to the iPhone, which we unveiled yesterday. Eli Hodapp asks questions to Christian about the flexibility of the RSDK and its future. Christian also manages to clear up a few misconceptions that have been swirling in comment boxes across the gaming internet.

SEGA Wants iPhone Games, Taxman Ports Sonic CD!

The Taxman, like Stealth, is very good at dropping bombs. I have watched Taxman for days as he held back this news from the Sonic community. Now that he has revealed it on Sonic Fan Games HQ, it’s time for everybody to know and shit a brick.

Taxman has been working hard the past few months to port Sonic CD to the iPhone using his famous “Retro-Engine Software Development Kit,” formerly known as the “Retro-Sonic Engine.” The engine is famously used in the Sonic Nexus and Retro-Sonic XG projects. The project uses none of the game’s original programming and is built from the ground up in Taxman’s “RSDK.” It only took him a few weeks to port Palmtree Panic and all of its time periods to the iPhone. Also, the game runs at a perfect frame rate.

Recently, Taxman sent an e-mail to SEGA Europe about his iPhone port. He has yet to receive return contact from them. On Monday, July 27th, SEGA of America’s blog asked the fans which classic SEGA game that they’d like to see ported to the iPhone/iPod Touch. With that announcement, Taxman decided to reveal to all of you his amazing project and he wants you to answer one question:

The question is, do YOU want it? Let SEGA know. This is more than just one of their crappy emulator ports, we’re talking iPhone exclusive enhancements and features (I’ve got some cool plans)

You heard the man!  Get to that blog post and tell them what you want!

Please, get SEGA to pick up this port of Sonic CD. It’s flawless. Given the history of SEGA’s iPhone ports, with the Streets of Rage one being exceptionally horrible, we need an amazing game like this one to hit our mobile devices.

Project Mettrix Becomes First Sonic Fangame On Wii

blz-exampleStealth is the master of bomb-dropping.  To list a few, he has ported Tweaker’s Sonic 1 Megamix hack to the SEGA CD, tricked morons with news tips, and released a port of Sonic 1 for the Game Boy Advance that doesn’t suck.  At this year’s SAGE though, Stealth has outdone himself.  His long-time project, Sonic: Project Mettrix, has been successfully been ported to the Nintendo Wii and Sony Playstation Portable.

Project Mettrix uses Stealth’s “E02 Engine,” a multi-platform game development tool for 2D games.  Mettrix has been around for quite some time, but it is really flourishing with the E02 treatment.  Now, you can play and create custom levels for Mettrix on your Wii and PSP.

Those with homebrew enabled Wiis should download this game right away and experience this momentous occasion.

Get Your Hands On “Sonic Robo Blast 2,” Version 2.0

srb2

Sonic Robo Blast 2 has been in development for 11 years.  To think that we’d be playing a “version 2.0” makes me feel old, despite me only recently turning 22 years old.  A day before the 2009 Sonic Amateur Games Expo opens, Sonic Team Jr., the game’s developers, have released this new version, three years after the last demo.

Version 2.0 has a completable, polished, yet unfinished single player campaign.  The team’s leader, AJ Freda, has assured that there are so many improvements to the game that “to list them would be exhausting.”  With this release, however, AJ will be leaving the team and turning over control to his other members.  He is expecting a child soon, so we in the community wish him well on fatherhood and his future endeavors.  It certainly is the end of an era.

I think that it’s hilarious that somebody tried to sell Sonic 3D Blast on a Tiger LCD handheld.  That fact is funnier than the commercial itself.  Not to mention all the false hope the ad provides.  Compare how many times you see the Genesis version of 3D Blast to the Tiger handheld version and laugh.

SAGE Sneak Peak: “Sonic Attitude!”

sonicattitude

Above is a screenshot of a game coming to SAGE ’09 in 2 weeks, called Sonic Attitude by SFGHQer Endri Lauson.  The game is a 2D sidescroller in full 3D.  LOOK AT THE PRETTY.  LOOK AT IT.

Endri originally designed Attitude for the Nintendo DS, but the recent screenshots that have been coming in have been for the PC version.  Endri built the PC version from the ground up in his own custom software development kit:

One thing that I would like to note is that I redefined the engine for the PC version. The PC version will now feature a brand new engine entirely customized by me myself. I like to call it, “Attitude Engine”. It’s an entire SDK for developing Sonic games for PC. In fact, you can you it to develop other types games but Sonic games, but the main sources included are for Sonic in general.  The main features in the engine I belive is SSAO and almost-with-no-pre-calculations-at-all Global Illumination.

To play the 2008 tech demo of Sonic Attitude, check out Endri’s website (translated from Portuguese) and follow the progress Endri makes on the game at the official thread at Sonic Fan Games HQ.
