– Console/s to play the Sonic game library on have not been decided yet.

Play3’s Video Preview of ASR PS3

As seen in the above video German PlayStation gaming site Play3 have recently got some hands-on time with the PS3 version of Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing. It looks to be the same build Playr recently got to try out but this time we get to see some more of the Jumble Jungle track and a glimpse of other characters in action such as Ryo and Shadow. It sounds like even German fans get a crazy commentator too.

ASR: 3 New Wii Screenshots and Bottom Screens To Old DS Screenshots

Nintendo Europe have put up their product pages for both Wii and DS versions of Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing. In the Wii section we have 3 new screenshots in with some old screenshots and in the DS section we finally get to see the bottom screen from really old screenshots which reveal a very different layout to the final we’ve seen in the latest screenshots.

Comparing the old and new builds it appears the original plan was to have the map and the lap and position counters all on the bottom screen. The latest build shows the map has remained on the bottom screen with the lap and position counter moved to the top screen and a timer next to a best time record has been added to the bottom screen. We also see the map’s background colour used to be a brighter blue while the latest build has been given a less distracting darker blue.

The screenshots are all in flash so we cant post them here, you can check them out at both games product pages at Nintendo Europe’s website.

Sonic Retro Reveal New ASR Art

Of course this really isn’t Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing art but instead some cool artwork from 1991 used to promote Mega World. Wouldn’t it be cool if Sonic riding in this car or his Sonic Drift car was implemented into Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing as DLC?

EB Games Australia Reveals ASR Pre-order Bonus

EB Games Australia have revealed their bonus gift you can receive when you pre-order any version of Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing. The gift looks to be the toy race cars based on the game that were revealed last year in concept art form to be released this month at Toy Globe.

EB Games warns you that the racer you get may vary on purchase so it appears you dont get to choose your favourite character, you instead get what they give you. It’s unclear wether Australia will still be getting the Ryo Forklift DLC code ArchangelUK revealed for Europe where he stated Australia might get it but wasn’t sure.

More Sonic 4 Footage For Those With Eagles Eyes

Forget the early bird gets the worm, how about the eagle eyed gets the hedgehog? Was the 3 seconds of Sonic 4 footage not enough for you? Well SEGA actually put more footage in there for you, you just have to look closer. The guys at Sonic Retro looked past the picture and spotted footage of the Sonic 4 Sonic riding a pulley akin back to Sonic 3’s pulley’s you’ll remember from Angel Island Zone. The pulley has the retro star on from the star posts in the Mega Drive/Genesis games too, how cool is all that?

All Aboard The SEGA Train

[dailymotion]http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xc3lbp_1992-le-train-sega_videogames[/dailymotion]

SEGA France have posted the above video on their Blue Room blog of a promotional train they used back in 1992 to give people a hands on test of all the latest games on Mega Drive, Game Gear and Master System. You could even have a look at the guts of a Mega Drive and watch TV on the Game Gears TV Tuner. Good to see a train with no-one on it complaining about stuff, this trains full of people with their mouths open but only because they’re in shock and awe but who can blame them?

It looks like an event called the Euro Challenge 92 was also held as possibly a gaming competition of sorts, we’ve found this gold pin that was likely the prize for besting the challenge.

Some small details are revealed in the video too, one of the Cups is called Chao Cup and a scoring system where points are earned dependant on what position you are in at the end of a race.

Nothing new is revealed except that the game will allow you to get a boost at the start of the race like in most kart racing games but there are some cool nods to SEGA’s history.

The Trophy list for the PS3 version is yet to be revealed but will likely be just the same as the Achievement list but with an added Platinum trophy for earning all Trophies however it may be something unique since one Achievement oddly already has that task covered with the Ultimate Collection Achievement. Steve Lycett: “We didn’t forget NiGHTS”

UPDATE: We’ve taken down the picture of NiGHTS out of respect for the guys over at NiGHTS into Dreams since this is their exclusive so if you’d like to get a good look at NiGHTS in ASR follow the below link to their forums and check it out. /UPDATE END

Speaking exclusively at the NiGHTS into Dreams forums Steve Lycett of Sumo Digital has officially revealed NiGHTS role in Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing after the cat was let out of the bag a few days back thanks to a certain eagle eyed forumer known as Doctor Eggman.

Right then – first off… We didn’t forget NiGHTS!

Just since you’ve all been trying to make him out from that blurry capture from Youtube, I figured we better put a nicer shot out! Consider this an exclusive

We’ve given NiGHTS a very important role. He starts all the races, and also finishes them too! He also resides over Time Trial, whenever you set a new lap record, you’ll have NiGHTS flying along with you celebrating!

I have to admit the main reason he’s in was after we saw your heartfelt pleas, especially those of DiGi and TRiPPY, we had to make sure NiGHTS was in and played an important role. After all, we really didn’t want them to burn all their collection now. So whilst he’s not playable, he very much made it in, and as a result of the huge amount of support for the character that you all showed.

Does this mean that NiGHTS may not be in future DLC? Well who can say. That’s a question I can’t answer right now – it all depends on how well the game does

Anyway – cats out of the bag, so I figured we best make it official!

Now, I can look forward to yet more ‘Don’t forget Flagman!’ posts I’m sure

S0L

So there you have it! Sumo Digital aren’t just an hard working developer, they are a caring developer who after listening to the community didn’t forget NiGHTS 😀 Join me in a toast won’t you? Now where’s my hankey…

Guest Blog: Happy Hedgehog Day!

Hello, and happy Hedgehog Day, everyone!

What’s that? A parody of Groundhog Day? Oh! No, I’m not referring to the Needlemouse reveal today, I’m just calling Hedgehog Day what it is! You see, this isn’t just some Sonical propaganda going on! It really was originally called “Hedgehog Day!”

Let me share a little history with you…

Long before Groundhog Day had ever been declared a holiday, the Romans had celebrated a similar event thousands of years ago, every February 2nd, in hopes of predicting the weather. Or at least when winter was going to end! But instead of a groundhog, they observed a hedgehog. Really, it’s true! The hedgehog, coming out of hibernation, sees his shadow (only during a clear moon) the Romans were able to decide whether or not we’d be seeing Spring anytime soon.

Now, we all know no small insectivore has a say over the weather, but it’s an interesting fact to know that over in the land shaped like a boot, they looked towards the not-so-well-known hedgehog for guidance.

But, why do we observe the much chunkier and less cool hedgehog? Well, when the holiday was brought to North America, it turns out that there are no abundance of these little sentient pin cushions. So we went with the closest thing, the groundhog!

So, on this glorious Hedgehog Day, think about how important the creature really was back then. And hey, we may be able to thank a certain blue one for making the hedgehog popular in the states, like it deserves. Maybe we can go for a name change, finally? And maybe Sonic’s rival should have been a groundhog. Here’s looking at you, Shadow.

[UPDATE, Scores Are In]First ASR Review In Todays GamesMaster Magazine

UPDATE: We’ve picked up a copy of the magazine and we can reveal all 4 console versions are reviewed. The Xbox 360 & PS3 versions earned an awesome review score of 83% with the summary “The best kart racer on 360 and PS3, but not quite the Mario Kart-beater we’d hoped for.”, Wii version got 83% and DS version 70%. GamesMaster gave Mario Kart Wii a 91% so there’s not much difference, they are still great scores.

Anyone looking to pick up the magazine with their favourite character’s cover be warned, you don’t get a choice due to the stupid outer plastic bag which teases the 12 covers on the back saying “Which SEGA All-Star have you got?” /UPDATE END

To kick off Hedgehog Day ArchangelUK has exclusively revealed over at Sonic Wrecks that UK gaming magazine GamesMaster are going to have the first review for Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing in their new issue out today. As you can tell from the picture the magazine is celebrating the release of the game by giving readers the choice of 12 different covers with a different one of the games playable characters on each.

We’ll be picking up a copy first thing in the morning and report back on the review score but as always for the full review you’ll of course have to pick up a copy of the magazine or else we’ll have a call from GamesMaster’s lawyers.

Which cover will you be picking up? Let us know in the comments.

Exclusive: Ryo’s Forklift DLC Revealed For ASR

UPDATE 2: ArchangelUK at the Sonic City Blognik has revealed what Ryo Forklift’s All Star Move will be, how it works and confirms he doesn’t replace normal Ryo.

Ryo gains his ASM, he does not summon another vehicle – you have a different animation for this sequence. He clenches his fist and with his right foot FLOORS it. Yes Ryo litterally puts the pedal to the metal* and the whole forklift rears up and you charge forward with the same power as normal Ryo’s ASM.

So Ryo-F is different, in a sense. I’ll confirm he doesn’t replace normal Ryo either as a few of you were worried about that. I’ve just spoken to one of the senior SOE staff working on the game and hopefully we might see some footage down the line. We’ll have to wait and see.

/UPDATE 2 END

UPDATE: ArchangelUK has now made this DLC official at the Sonic City Blognik, this will be a pre-order bonus code for people who pre-order the Xbox 360/PS3 version and will be exclusive to Europe and Australia. Info regarding this form of Ryo’s All Star Move will hopefully be available tomorrow along with images of the France exclusive double ASR Wii Wheel bundle. Info on which store chains in which territories this pre-order gift will be obtainable from will be available soon. /UPDATE END

Original story below:

You may remember a banner ad at retailer GAME’s Spanish website that we reported on which revealed a Ryo character as a piece of downloadable content you can receive when you pre-order the game for Xbox 360. Well GAME have updated the banner to clear things up, the banner now reads “Downloadable Ryo’s forklift” suggesting Ryo from Shenmue’s Forklift will be playable as a seperate vehicle outside of his All Star Move but this leaves the question what would Ryo’s All Star Move be when riding the Forklift as his main vehicle(if he has one)?

It’s unknown at present wether this will appear as DLC for people who don’t pre-order, wether it will be available outside of Spain or wether it will appear on other formats.

We’ll keep you updated. A HUGE thanks to Jolt at the SSMB for the heads up and translation.

Project Needlemouse Challenge II Update

SEGA staffer Ruby Eclipse has made an update on the SEGA of America Blog regarding Project Needlemouse Challenge II. It appears the Sonic community has pulverised the requested 100 pieces of art as the current ammount of submissions now stands at over 350 entries so give yourselves a well deserved pat on the back.

In celebration of the effort that’s been put in RubyEclipse had this to say –

That makes all of us – including, hopefully, you guys – very happy. The challenge has been bested within 48 hours, and as a result next week is going to be the Week of the Hedgehog! The celebration will begin next Tuesday on Hedgehog Day, (step aside, groundhog!) with a special massive swag giveaway and concept art reveal, and will lead into our biggest announcement going live as we approach next weekend. Trust us when we say that February is going to be a very good month.

Now then – to celebrate your success, we’d like to offer you guys additional rewards for continuing to send in your concept art – and some very awesome concept art, at that! So,for every 50 pieces of Concept Art (past 100), we will give away one extra piece of Sonic Merchandise during our Hedgehog Day giveaway!

To close RubyEclipse wanted to put an end to a rumour about the project that’s been going around to no end until now –

Oh, and as another bonus, let’s go ahead and dispel away a little rumor that we’ve noticed in the comments:

Project Needlemouse is not an HD version of Sonic 1. These may be old badniks, but when we said all-new adventure, we meant it.

The SEGA staff have picked out a bunch of their favourite pieces of concept art sent in and posted them up on the Blog for all to see. Has your entry been posted up? Excited about Hedgehog Day? Let us know in the comments

Thanks to jeremycarrier over at the SSMB for the heads up!

Want Lego Batman In ASR?

“Sega/Waner Bros. Int”
So according to this chart Sega had something to do with Lego Batman, so it’s possible to get Lego Batman in ASR as DLC. Come on people, this need’s to happen! Lead Environment Artist at Sumo Digital for ASR under his SumoRex tag over at SEGA forums is up for it –

LOL I’m game for that. Maybe, to be ironic, he could drive a car made from meccano too?

But seriously, that game was developed by Travellers Tales and published by Warner Bros so…WTF?

ONM Interview Craig Duncan On ASR

Official Nintendo Magazine UK has posted up an interview they’ve had with Craig Duncan, development director at Sumo Digital, to talk about Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing. The interview discusses how the game came to be, Sumo’s relationship with SEGA, comparisons to Mario Kart, favourite characters and Gilius from Golden Axe.

ONM are quite interested in the game’s depth compared to Mario Kart such as the drifting mechanic –

ONM: It is a lot easier to drift around corners in Sonic & Sega Racing than in Mario Kart Wii. Was that because you wanted to remove the barriers for novices?

Craig Duncan: I think we have the same level of depth but I think our drift system is a lot more accessible than Mario Kart so I think you can learn and get drift by playing either a tutorial or a race mission. But it takes a lot longer to master drift so we do have depth for the hardcore racers. It’s got to be accessible and it’s got to have depth.

ONM also liken the game’s commentator to classic cartoon Wacky Races –

ONM: Were you inspired by anything else? The commentary is very Wacky Races?

Craig Duncan: Yeah it is maybe a bit Wacky Races. It’s a game system as much as anything else. So if one of the characters behind gets an All-Star move the commentator will say “Amy Rose has just got her All-Star move!” You’ll know that someone behind you has a certain move so it’s a helpful system for the player. It informs you of what’s going on.

Or if people fire certain weapons the commentator will tell you so. He’ll also chide and goad you if you’re doing badly. He’ll say “that’s not great driving from Sonic” if you bounce off a few corners so it’s really helping you experience the game and how it plays much better.

You can check out the interview in full at ONM’s website.

ASR To Get Characters And Tracks As DLC?

A polish car enthusiast website called Gry V10.pl has posted a preview (if you can call it that) for Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing, dated 14th January 2010. In the preview they go into detail listing all of the features of the game that have recently been announced but then they get to a subject we aren’t as clued up on as they appear to be, which is downloadable content.

Up until now we’ve seen Xbox.com’s product page list DLC as a feature, but not what form/s it will arrive in, then yesterday we found out retailer GAME’s Spanish website are listing a pre-order bonus for a code to download a Ryo character. Now this car enthusiast website claims SEGA will be releasing characters AND tracks as DLC.

Here is a Google translation of the article/preview –

Racing games are simulators that not only production car with a perfectly odwzorowanymi. SEGA company specializes in such wyścigówkach and the latest to be crowned the long years of SEGA in the market.

Random: ASR Get’s It’s Own Version of a Rick Roll

YouTube user frikyvk has given Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing it’s own version of a Rick Roll by luring in people who are after a YouTube version of yesterdays ASR Wii trailer by tagging the above video with ‘ SONIC & SEGA ALL STARS RACING WII TRAILER ‘ so the video comes up in the findings when you search for the trailer.

The video seems to be a Spanish advert for a countdown to an announcement Orange and LG are making soon on the website for this. So hop to it and Sonic & SEGA All Star Ambassador your friends, family and enemies. It works, I fell for it myself.

Sonic Classic Collection Australian Release Date, ASR Delayed?

SEGA Australia have issued a release schedule to press and in it we see Nintendo DS compilation Sonic Classic Collection has been given a release date of 11th March 2010. Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing is also in the schedule but not at the 26th February date seen on SEGA’s website, it instead has a date of 4th March for Wii and DS. Could we be seeing a small delay at least in Australia? We’ll try to find a release schedule for the other 3 formats and we’ll update when we’ve got some official clearance on this news.

NiGHTS Is In ASR

We’ve just had a scan through the new Wii trailer for ASR and at 1:18 you can see NiGHTS waving the checkered flag at the finishing line. It look’s like he/she’s going to play the referee role much like Lakitu in Mario Kart.

Those who wanted him/her to be playable now have their answer why he’s not playable because he instead has been given the duty of official flag waver. What do you guys think of NiGHTS new job?

Check it out here

Project Needlemouse: SEGA Teasing Community?

SEGA have just out of the blue updated the header image to their forums to the above Sonic sprites leaving the Sonic community to wonder if this is a tease on how Project Needlemouse will be designed. Could we be seeing the classic Mega Drive sprites return?

In other news SEGA of America staff member Ruby Eclipse hinted at some news coming for Project Needlemouse soon with a reply he made at NeoGAF forums to someone shocked at how much discussion has been going on with what little info we have over at –

If it makes you feel any better, that’s all going to change in the very near future.

I mean, er – what? Let’s post more videos.

So could we be seeing more of the game soon? We’ll have to wait and see but for now take this all with a grain of salt.

[UPDATE]ASR: Ryo A DLC Only Character?

UPDATE: Steve Lycett of Sumo Digital has responded to the issue with the following statement over at the SSMB :

Don’t panic – you don’t have to download Ryo – or do you? Maybe there is more than one Ryo

S0L

/UPDATE END

The above advertising banner for Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing has popped up at video game retailer GAME’s Spanish website. The banner translates to say that Ryo Hazuki is a downloadable character pre-order bonus but there is concern that he may only be downloadable on the Xbox 360 version due to the banner only appearing on the Xbox 360 section of the site. The official site of the game also mentioned Xbox 360 exclusive downloadable content when it first launched before the information was pulled.

This is very odd as the trailer that revealed Ryo and every trailer since were multiple format trailers and not once since he was revealed has he been said to be a downloadable character only. If Ryo does turn out to be download only and only downloadable on the Xbox 360 version, many fans will be outraged especially since this is the first game Ryo has been playable in since Shenmue 1 and 2 years ago.

We’ll keep tabs on this situation and let you know more when we get some information.
