Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween blue believers! Ah Halloween, I still have fond memories of wearing a homemade Dracula cape (which was amazing) walking through the cold October streets knocking on peoples doors, filling my goody bag with all manner of amazing things.

Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year (along with Christmas Day and Pancake Day) and it feels like every year more people get into it. So with that in mind, I’ve decided to take a look at my top 5 scary/Halloween related Sonic moments. Whilst some may not be strictly Halloween related, they scared me and others then, and may still scare some people now. Sonic X-Treme E3 1996 Promo Video Hits the Net

A Sonic X-Treme promo video from E3 1996 hit the net yesterday, courtesy of YouTube user ArgyleDX. Some of the footage you may recognise from an off-screen recording of the SEGA Saturn game’s E3 1996 trailer, while some of it you may have not seen before. The video is very much in line with SEGA’s classic advertising combat against then rival Nintendo, who had their big N64 launch title Super Mario 64 on the way that year.

ArgyleDX has also shared a couple of other SEGA videos from E3 1996 promoting games for the SEGA Saturn and SEGA Genesis and Nomad. Those are available after the jump.

Sonic Jump on Android: Failure To Launch, or Botched Take-Off?

In a rather confusing turn of events, SEGA has seemingly dashed the hopes of Android-owning Sonic fans across the globe who were eagerly anticipating the release of Sonic Jump, as the official product page for the mobile-only game – which only a week ago revealed a November release date for Google Play – has since been updated to list only the iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) that the game is currently out on.

So, at first glance, one can assume that the Android listing was a mistake in the first place and the game was always intended to be iOS exclusive. But look a little further than the “available on” section of the page and there are still glimmers of hope for Android users.

Freak-Out Friday: Rock Bottom Music Video

Troysson81 is a saint.

No, really. It takes a saint to have to rewatch nearly every cutscene in Sonic 2006 and have the patience to make a music video out of its dialogue.

And it’s too addicting to put down.

First Footage of S&ASR Transformed 3DS Released

Today, Nintendo of America revealed the first gameplay footage of the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed …and it’s looking pretty good. The tracks shown look identical to their console counterparts, which is a big step-up to how the Nintendo DS version of the first game compared to the console version. It looks like Sumo Digital is really taking advantage of the extra power of the Nintendo 3DS. You can check out the gameplay footage in the video above.

Exclusive Yuji Uekawa Sonic Sketch Going For Auction

Look at this! It’s two pictures of Sonic the Hedgehog. But what’s so special about them, other than the fact that they’re framed? Well, one is signed by Sonic Team artist, Yuji Uekawa, and both are going up for auction next week for charity. You could own these pieces of artwork!

The Sonic canvasses are part of a larger video game-themed art exhibition that’s currently taking place in London’s City Hall (that’s where the Mayor, Boris Johnson, works). The Sonic Stadium is 12 Years Old This Week!

Tomorrow, The Sonic Stadium will have officially served the online community for twelve years. Twelve years! It’s crazy to wonder where all that time has gone (actually, no – best not to wonder!). From the humblest of beginnings in a tiny little 20MB hosted Angelfire fansite, to the information resource of the late 2000s through to the news blog you see today, I hope you have all enjoyed what we’ve had to offer on TSS over the years, and I thank you all for your continued support!

I’m working on a couple of surprises that should be ready either this week or the next, but in the meantime there’s a few celebratory and visual things that can more than pass the time. I’m working on a new banner for the site, and aim to give the site a general decorating for tomorrow.

TitansCreed was kind enough to interview me to talk about the history of the website and how far it’s all come – the first part of that will come later today, with a second part tomorrow. There’s some more video content from the archives that I’d just love to drag up and show you guys too. Stay tuned for that!

Again, thank you so much for your support – we’re just a bunch of huge Sonic fans, like you are. Our official birthday is on October 24th, 2000. With TitansCreed’s interview kicking things off early, all that’s left to do is have something of a virtual toast to the site, the site staff, the forum and mods, SEGASonic Radio and its DJs, The Sonic Show (which is celebrating its sixth birthday at the moment), SEGADriven and its fantastic archive of SEGA info, and all of you who visit and help keep the site alive. Cheers!

S&ASR Transformed World Tour Details Revealed

A new preview of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed has appeared over at French gaming website Jeux Video, and in it we learn a bit more about the game’s World Tour mode. This mode is set-up like a board game, with each square representing a race challenge in which you can earn a bronze, silver or gold medal. A bronze medal will let you pass to the next square, but you will need a silver or gold to access squares that hold challenges that unlock characters and boss fights. Jeux Video reports that the difficulty varies depending on the objective of the challenge.

The biggest piece of Sonic & All Transformed-Stars Racing is in World Tour mode , inspired other productions as SEGA Virtua Tennis. This mode is represented in the form of a board game where the boxes represent different races containing many challenges with three medals specific to the key. To move to the next step, only the bronze is required. But to unlock boxes with special challenges unlocks characters and bossfights , silver and gold are essential. Difficulty varies depending on the objectives to be accomplished : finishing third, second or first, beating a rival with a lead more or less, make the most possible slippage or finish the race with a countdown by crossing checkpoints to repel.

More details after the jump.

ASRT Achievement List Revealed

So the achievements (and we assume the trophies) for Sonic & All Star Racing Transformed have been posted by xbox360achievements.org.  A quick look at them suggests that this is going to be a VERY hard game to get 100% on. Whilst the challenges themselves don’t sound too bad. Many players might be limited by technical aspects.

For instance. Two of the achievements require a single console to have 4 controllers hooked up. One of those demands that 4 local players come 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the same race against 6 other Ai racers.

Full list of the awards is after the break, feel free to discuss them in the comments… now… anyone wanna come over and help me knock out Team Sonic? Anyone…. please!?

Sonic Loses his Rings & Does the Party Dance

You might have noticed we’ve been following the movie Wreck-It Ralph with a keen interest, mainly because some blue hedgehog guy that you all seem to like is in it along with a bloke in a red suit? Snow Joke: This is a SA2HD Review… By The Sun’s Standards

It was a fine Friday evening… until our own Shadzter found this on the web.

Say what you will about how you feel towards Sonic Adventure 2, whether you find it to be the best or worst game ever, but I think we can all find some common ground when it comes to the questionable quality of this… “review”?

I don’t know, am I actually allowed to call it that?

Sonic Adventure 2, PSN/XBLA/ £6.49/800MS Points

Snow joke … Tails tackles mountain

THEY say never go back for a reason.

This was a great game more than ten years ago – a release to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Sonic franchise in 2001.

It was the final Sonic title to come out on Sega hardware and was the best game on the Dreamcast.

You get what you expect with Sonic. Speed, rings and corny voices.

Not something to rush out and get, unless you’re feeling particularly nostalgic, or you harbour a determination to play all of the Sonic games.

First Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed 3DS Details

In a new preview just posted online, Pocket Gamer has shared the first details about the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. As expected, while the PS Vita version will be much like the console versions, the 3DS version will be pretty different. One of the differences is a different engine “more optimised for that sort of platform,” according to Sumo Digital’s Gareth Wilson. With the game running a different engine, it will be missing some game modes present in its big brother.

Pocket Gamer reports that the game isn’t missing content just because of processing power, but to adapt the game to different audiences.

“We got some children to come in and play [a level in which] you had to blow a tank up and dodge missiles and they didn’t really get that,” says Wilson. “We also had a mode where you had to dodge between lots of traffic and they kept getting run over really badly.”

Modes like World Tour are said to be much the same across all formats and both PS Vita and 3DS versions support online multiplayer, but the 3DS version will have simpler game modes “like ‘beat people’s laptimes’ or ‘beat this particular character’.”

According to Pocket Gamer, the 3DS and PS Vita versions will be available in Europe November 16th 2012, the same date the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions are released.

S&ASR Transformed’s ESRB E10+ Rating Now Online

Last month we told you about the ESRB’s E10+ rating for Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed and how the game will feature mild language and animated blood. Today, the ESRB has made their full rating description available on their website with the reasons behind it.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed™

Platform: Windows PC, PlayStation 3, PS Vita, Wii U, Xbox 360

Rating: E10+

Content descriptors: Animated Blood, Mild Cartoon Violence, Mild Language

Other:
Includes online features that may expose players to unrated user-generated content (Windows PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U)

Rating summary: This is a racing game in which players compete with Sonic the Hedgehog and other characters from the SEGA universe. As players speed through each themed track, they can bump into other vehicles and use various power-ups (e.g., firecrackers, cyclones, puffer fish, snowballs, bee swarms) to impede opponents’ progress; some projectiles result in colorful explosions, and vehicles often spin out or flip into the air when hit. In one battleship-themed level, realistic explosions can be seen in the background; another racetrack contains giant spider hazards that emit splashes of green liquid when struck. One character says “damn” during gameplay.

Sonic Underground, an obscure DiC produced Sonic cartoon from 1999, is getting an epilogue in Sonic Universe’s landmark 50th issue next March. The issue, which will be a single issue story, will chronicle what happened after the end of the television series, finally giving a proper ending to the show nearly 14 years after it ended. The story will be written by Ian  Flynn and the cover, which you can see above, is drawn by Patrick Spaziente. For the full cover, head over to this story’s source, Destructoid.

What makes this even cooler is that Sonic Underground has always been a part of the Sonic comic’s wider multiverse. The comic had a crossover with the series in a super special back when the show first came out in order to promote the series. In a sense, this issue is not only resolving an entire Sonic continuity, but a lingering plot thread in the comic to boot.

I am personally rather excited by the prospect of Sonic Universe being used to actually continue and resolve one of Sonic’s ill-fated cartoons. We’ve never gotten a true resolution to any Sonic continuity, with most continuities typically being left open ended, if not on an outright cliffhanger as was the case with Sonic SatAm. Heck, maybe this will open the door for other Sonic universes to be featured in the comic!

Terrible musical numbers and some spotty voice acting aside, I felt Sonic Underground was a decent Sonic series with some strong episodes, though this may have something to do with the fact that it was the first American cartoon to feature Knuckles. It’s typically considered one of the worst of the Sonic cartoons. If you have any interest in catching up on Sonic Underground before its epilogue in Sonic Universe #50, the series currently airs every weekday morning on Disney XD. British fans can catch the series on Kix. The series is also available on DVD and on Netflix.

S&ASR Transformed Wii U Special Edition Boxart Surfaces

SEGA Europe has today released box artwork of the Limited Edition version of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed via their press site, but the Wii U version is oddly labelled differently as a ‘Special Edition’. Retailers have been and still are showing a Limited Edition for Wii U, though SEGA has never officially announced it for the Wii U, so have they been working on exclusive content for the Wii U version behind the scenes? Hopefully we’ll find out soon. If we get any details, we’ll pass them along.

Limited Edition box artwork for all formats is available after the jump.
