Bentley Jones is Back With A New ‘Dreams of An Absolution’ Remix

He’s been away from the Sonic the Hedgehog scene for a while, but record producer and artist Bentley Jones has come back into the fold – just in time for Sonic’s birthday – with a fresh remix of ‘Dreams of an Absolution’. Mash-Up Monday: Shakugan no Shana and the Black Knight

It’s that time again, guys! Put on those headphones and crank up that volume as we kick the week off with Mash-Up Monday!

Today, we highlight a very unique mash-up, put together by the likes of Shadowlink4321, who’s renowned for both machinimation and music on YouTube. The two mash-ups featured today are both from the same pair of songs!

Those who follow the works of Bentley Jones just might recognize one of the two songs! He has covered one of the opening themes to the anime Shakugan no Shana, named Joint, on his “TRANS//LATION 2” album. Presented in its original form, Joint is thrown together with Sonic and the Black Knight‘s final boss theme: With Me.

However, there’s a catch! As I’ve mentioned, there are two mash-ups here… And that’s exactly it! The first version of Joint With Me is in fact With Me‘s vocals added to Joint‘s melody, and the second version (found after the jump!) highlights Joint‘s vocals (in Japanese) through With Me‘s background music!

Enjoy~!

On another note you will also remember I put my merch where my mouth was a few weeks back, and indeed I both predicted Matt Pieper and Klayton Schafler‘s wins (although I don’t think it took a genius to figure out how great they were). I also thought Freen in Green‘s entry might place, and as they didn’t (and as promised) I will send you peeps a goody bag – please let me know your address by emailing me at tbird [at] sonicstadium.org. Oh, and I think I owe Stasis a few bits and pieces too!

If you fancy snagging yourself some merchandise keep your eyes peeled right here on TSS for MORE COMPETITIONS!…and also keep your ears open for more exciting news from the world of Bentley Jones on the Official Bentley Jones Website.

Bentley Jones Protests “Unauthorised” SEGA Releases

Earlier today Lee Brotherton – better known as Bentley Jones – posted a statement on his blog regarding the use of his work on recent Sega/Wavemaster music album releases. In an uncharacteristically formal language, he singled out last year’s True Colors: The Best of Sonic the Hedgehog Part 2, notable for his previously unheard vocals in the track Open Your Heart (K-Klub Remix).

The full message from his blog is below.

It disappoints me to announce that the latest SEGA / Wave-Master releases relating to the Sonic series have proceeded without my consent, approval or notification. Specifically regarding the “True Colors” album, I wish to stress that I have not paid any direct contribution to its production at any point and is therefore not an accurate representation of my work. Furthermore; the music, vocals, production, engineering and my likeness(es) that appear on these albums do so without my permission, proper crediting and, in some instances, by breaching the copyrights of my work.

The royalties that I would normally be entitled to for any music that I have written have been denied, and so the only people who have been profiting from the exploitation of me and my music are SEGA.

The delay in issuing this statement has been due to legal investigations, and because of ongoing inquiries it may not be possible to comment on this area of my work through any medium: my sincerest apologies to the fans. Under protest, I will not list nor promote these albums as I do not consider them to be official additions to my discography.

I hope that my fans will understand and sympathise with this situation and I hope it will be resolved very soon.

// Bentley x

Bentley Jones rose to Sonic stardom some years ago when he was invited by Jun Senoue to create some remixes for Shadow the Hedgehog’s soundtrack. He has since worked on one of the theme songs to Sonic 06, Dreams of an Absolution, along with various remixes. From this – and his past work creating club mixes of pop songs for Remix Factory – Bentley Jones has created a solo career that resulted in a hit dance cover album in Japan. His popularity in the fanbase has made him a regular at the Summer of Sonic convention.

This could be a case of legal misunderstanding between the two parties, and Bentley Jones remained tight-lipped about any potential litigation process. But, this is some pickle, and we at least hope it’s resolved soon with minimal fuss.

Can You Beat this Bentley Jones Video Competition Entry? Part 3!?!

I’ve put my copy of Sonic Classic Collection down for five miuntes to show you my third and final favourite entry for the Bentley Jones So Much More Video Competition. As you’ve probably guessed, most of my faves have centred on videos where the entrants have roped their mates in to get involved, and this one is no different – Club 9 have banded together in this rather artsy and albeit silly video in which they mime their way through the track, or stand around looking moody. It’s filmed in really high quality, it’s fun to watch, and half the band are called Ryan (ok, so the last one’s not really a selling point). Plus, the guy on the sound board is mental.

Again, I think this is a real contender for top spot in the competition, and in true T-Bird style will send them a goodie bag as consolation should they fail to make the top 10 entries.

Watch out though, the band do start loosing clothes towards the end of the video. Form an orderly queue please ladies.

EDIT: Damn! I keep finding more awesome entries! Check out the Bentley Bird!

Can You Beat this Bentley Jones Video Competition Entry? Part 2!

OK, so a few weeks ago I saw an entry for the Bentley Jones So Much More Video Contest by Sonictoast that blew my hat off my head, with live action, stop motion, and a bloke dressed as Eggman. Well, today I spotted a nifty bit of art appear on BJ’s facebook page. Perousing facetube following a series of links turned up this cover of So Much more by a band called “Freen In Green”, which gives the track an Indie makeover – percussion, bass, rhythm and melody guitars, and of course some vocalz. 75% of band appear to be hiding off camera / behind hair, but I guess that’s forgiven because there’s a pretty good attempt at the solo! Anyway, this is another spiffing example of what you can do to really sweep away the competition and do something original, as well as have fun with your mateys (because it’ cool to show you have friends!). Anyway, I think this has made it onto my list of entries where “if it doesn’t place I will bear my backside in Fenwick’s window. I like to put my money where my mouth is, so Yamino, if you don’t place in the winners, I will send you a consolation prize!

Check out the video!:

Oh, and they also have an account on facebook too!

You’ve only have until Friday (5th of March 2010) to get your entries in, so if you haven’t done so yet, you’ve got a busy couple of days ahead of you! If you spot any good entries, lets us know in the comments!

Can You Beat this Bentley Jones Video Competition Entry?

I’ve been keeping my finger on the pulse and looking out for entries for the Bentley Jones Video Competition for So Much More…and to be honest, I wasn’t feeling it. There’s a couple of good entries out there, but I’ve seen the inside of far too many people’s bedrooms for my liking.

So after a long day of work I came home to find this, and my faith has been restored in humanity. This is amazing. THIS IS SO MUCH MORE. If this doesn’t place in the contest, I will personally send Sonictoast a prize because the amount of time that must have been spent on this is mind-boggling. You guys are my heroes today! Especially Mr. Foley; if they make a Sonic live action film I think we’ve found our Eggman…

UK ASR Box Art Revealed Including PC & Amazon UK Selling Bentley Jones MP3’s

UPDATE: PC box art revealed.

Amazon’s UK site has revealed the final UK box art for Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing which looks to be matching the U.S. box art including the Xbox 360 version’s ‘With Banjo-Kazooie’ sub title. ShopTo.net have also revealed the PC box art.

Also worth noting on Amazon’s UK site is that they are now selling Bentley Jones new songs from his So Much More… album in MP3 format as an album and individually, those who prefer CD’s are out of luck. As far as I’m aware this is the first time a UK retailer is selling any of Bentley Jones songs so this is very good news for Bentley Jones and the fans. Hopefully we’ll see more UK retailers follow suit.

Richard Jacques Still Very Much Involved In ASR

Richard Jacques

After yesterdays announcement that Bentley Jones’ new song So Much More will be the theme song for upcoming game Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing some fans were worried that Richard Jacques involvement might not come to be after all but Sumo Digital’s Steve Lycett(AKA S0L) has laid those worries to rest.

In the SSMB’s Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing topic Steve Lycett posted the following:

For those worried that Rich Jacques isn’t behind the music in the game – rest assured he very much is. All the menus are Mr Jacques creations, as well as other music used throughout the game.

Bentley’s tune is used for the end credits, and it’s pretty damned awesome. You can blame us for the extravagent Guitar solo used in it – we forced it on him 🙂

S0L

Look’s like the soundtrack is shaping up to be as fan pleasing as every other area of the game. Excited? We sure are.

Download Summer of Sonic 09’s “They Call Me Sonic” Mix

tcmlolicWith Summer of Sonic 2009 all wrapped up and way past awesome for all involved, we’re starting to crack out some great downloads for people to keep as memories – or to entertain those who couldn’t attend the convention this year. As it happens, Bentley Jones returned after last year’s performance and gave an exclusive Sonic-themed song. Last year he did a special mix of “In His World”. 2009’s piece?

They Call Me Sonic.

Yep. I wasn’t kidding. They Call Me Sonic. As Bentley took the stage to sing it live, he jokingly mentioned how ‘serious’ this song is and how meaningful it is for Sonic fans around the world. Damn straight, it is. Maybe next year we can get someone to do a cover of Wonderman.

You can download the Studio version of Bentley Jones’ “They Call Me Sonic – Furry Tails Enhanced Parody Mix” (AAUK named it that, by the way) right here on TSS. Watch it on Youtube (because nothing says music download better than a video website obviously) via Sonic Wrecks’ page, then get it via the link below:

The stage schedule is packed – there’s just enough time to move things around in between the events going on there, and that is the tip of the iceberg; there will be a whole host of activities and contests going on throughout the day – some of which you know about, and some of which will be surprises!

For those of you turning up ultra-early in the morning due to whatever means of transport you are taking to the event, serial deviantartist Elson “Darkspeeds” Wong will be hanging around nearby – check out his plans on his deviant art account.

Bentley Jones to Attend Summer of Sonic ’09!

bentley

If the Summer of Sonic wasn’t already awesome enough, it just got a whole lot more exciting.

Lee Brotherton a.k.a. Japanese chart-topping solo artist and Sonic fangirl heart-throb Bentley Jones has announced via the good old communication media of Facebook and Twitter that he will be attending Summer of Sonic again this year. Bentley Jones is the musical genius behind several Remix-Factory songs to have featured in recent Sonic titles, and more notably known for “Dreams of an absolution (Silver’s theme)” from Sonic ‘06 as well as versions of “His World”, “Open Your Heart” and “Seven Rings in Hand”.

To what capacity Lee will be attending the event is yet to be confirmed, but either way, we are absolutely stoked to have a legend of the Sonic universe return for the second year running. Only 34 more days to wait!

Merchzilla: Sonic Stuff Up For Grabs In Japan

bigmerch

I return! Before I delve into the fruitful world of merch once more, I’d like to say a big thanks to Paul Street and the TSS gang for holding the fort while we were roaming Japan; nice one guys and gals!

So anyway, to answer my question in one word…yes. There is most certainly Sonic merchandise to be had in Japan, some particularly nice stuff at that. The long answer, however, is that you really have to look for the stuff…and in some cases, you really need to look hard.

The COSPA brand are currently selling a range of high quality Sonic shirts and apparel, including a nifty selection of stylish shirts, a bandana and a tote bag. There’s even a reversible Sonic World Adventure shirt – so you can have Sonic on your sunny days and crack out the Werehog at night…just turn it inside out! The selection is not cheap though; you can expect to pay about ¥3000 (£22/$32) for a shirt, and ¥4200 for the reversible shirt. There’s even a Sonic Zippo lighter…but don’t expect to get it cheap! If you want something a bit more affordable, UNIQLO (another Japanese brand who produced a couple of Sonic UT print shirts last year) also have a Sonic shirt in their current Video game shirt line-up…and for a meagre ¥1500 it’s a bargain!

Considering JOYPOLIS is SEGA’s Mecca for state-of-the-art arcade games, there’s surprisingly little in the way of Sonic related goodies to pick up. The gift shop inside the complex is still selling boxes of its trademark Sonic Chocolate cake and sweets, as well as a set of mini plush toys of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy – each setting you back between £5-£7; a steal for nice little additions to a collection. You can also pick yourself up an odd little friendship bracelet set; very girly!

Having said that Sonic stuff is hard to find in general, Sonic soundtracks are not. Walk into any HMV or Tower Records in Tokyo, and not only do they have an extensive selection of game and anime soundtracks, you can grab the two recently released Black Knight Soundtracks as well as the Sonic World Adventure OSTs. It’s also not unusual to see earlier OSTs too…or a certain debut album by a Mr. Bentley Jones! We also spotted Charles Hamilton‘s CD going in Manhattan Records too – these guys get everywhere!!!

If retro gear is what you crave, then Akihabara really is the place you want to be! The main street is dotted with stores that stock immaculately kept copies of games and consoles of yesteryear. A copy of Chaotix on ebay can easily fetch £50 upwards; we managed to pick up a pristine copy for less than half that, as well as a copy of Tails Sky Patrol, complete with box, for a tenner. If you’re looking for any old magazines or references – put aside a few hours to rummage through shelves of “good as new” copies of magazines from well over fifteen years ago!

If you want to check out the COSPA range you can do so on their website, and if you’re interested in checking out some retro stores in Akihabara, my first recommendation is a store called Super Potato.

Good to be back TSS – continue to keep your eyes peeled for more Sonic stuff Merch Hogs!

Part 1 of Bentley Jones Interview on the Blognik

bentleyjonesRaise your hands all of you who made it to the Summer of Sonic last year. Good, all 200+ of you. In that case there’s a good chance some of you saw the great musical performance from Bentley Jones and if you were there a little earlier, the awesome impromptu sing along to Dreams of Absolution with one Bentley Jones watching with a big grin on his face in the background. Oh yes, I saw that!

It’s safe to say at least a few of you here are Bentley Jones fans so you might be interested to know ArchangelUK over on the Blogknik has posted the first of a series of posts featuring an interview with him. It’s well worth a read and it gives an inside look into what to expect from his first album. It also gives an amusing insight into how AAUK tackles with the dreaded Man-Flu, never to be taken lightly.

Put Your Face To Faith

Face to FaithHow’s this for an Easter treat? We’re teaming up with SEGA Europe to give away an Xbox 360 Elite console, along with a copy of Sonic Unleashed and some other goodies too! I also have an Xbox 360 copy of Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection to give away too, so I’m chucking that in there too. Monster prize, eh? It’s just what we do. Wanna win it? Head to the contest page right now!

As we’re getting through the Media Portal updates, I’ve been working hard to get a few more music pages online at TSS. We’ve just added the Face to Faith vocal soundtrack from Sonic and the Black Knight, and an information page on Bentley Jones’ debut Japanese album, TRANS//LATION. It’s some pretty good stuff, and I urge you to use the links provided on the page to import the albums if you like what you hear (although for the record, we won’t be providing downloads of Bentley’s album – sorry).

On this Easter holiday, you might want to kick back and relive some of your younger days. Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection may be right up your street, and we have a review online now to help you decide whether it’s worth a few bob of your money and time.

Finally, we have yet another old/new addition to the Skin Selector. Rounding off the Triple Threat, I’ve gone ahead and remade the ‘Knucklehead’ theme so you can see red whilst you browse TSS.

#8 Trans//Lation Album Sampler!

Bentley Jones (aka Lee Brotherton) rocks ass. As we all know, this is official fact. He has spent more time in Sonic music than any sane person should and rocked the balls out at the Summer Of Sonic 2008 event. If you don’t know who he is, (fool) then think back to Sonic 06. Remember Silvers theme tune? Dreams of an Absolution? That was him… OHH YEAAH.

Back in November Mr.Jones was happy to announce he signed with EMI Music Japan and now FINALLY in the week just past his album “Trans//Lation” was released! We have samples of four tracks for you.

 1. 素直になれたら ~FINAL NIGHT~
 2. 気分上々↑↑
 3. ドラマチック
 4. GLAMOROUS SKY

After you’ve finished orgasming at the greatness of these tracks, head over and buy yourself a copy of TRANS//LATION!!

SAGE ’08: Previews, Mecha Madness Release, LeeBro

It must be that time of the year, being that the few days before SAGE are always filled with last minute hype videos for just about every project. I am well prepared to wait and let ’em all pile up, rather than flooding this here front page, devoting a single news post to a game’s preview video.

With one entire day before the show (which starts at 12 AM EST, by the way), SFGHQ members Aylingling, Nitemare, and Shadow5561 have released preview videos of their SAGE demos of Sonic Zenith, Super Mario Kingdoms, and Sonic Unleashed Advance, respectively. You can check them all out in the links below:

Check out Sonic Zenith in action!

Check out Super Mario Kingdoms in action!

Check out Sonic Unleashed Advance in action!

In other news, SFGHQ member, Streak Thunderstorm, has jumped the gun and has released the SAGE demo of Mecha Madness early. You can access his SAGE booth, which has the download to the demo, at the following link:

Mecha Madness’ SAGE ’08 Booth

One last thing to be on the look out for is the ever-updating schedule, because we have added two new guests to SAGE: Lee Brotherton and Eric Iwasaki, a developer from Naughty Dog studios (Crash Bandicoot series). Times have yet to be set in stone, but they are confirmed to be guests in the SAGE chat room. Special thanks goes out to SSMB member EXshad for annoying the living shit out of us until we got him into the chat room schedule.

When the show begins, we will have the entire front page staff reviewing all the games with playable builds. You read correctly, I will not be the only one doing SAGE reporting. Please check back throughout the week for more SAGE 2008 coverage (100% free of pretentiousness and the word “first”).

Bird’s Eye View: Summer of Sonic 2008

YOSH!I remember back to October 2006, chilling out at Lee Rosey’s Tea Room in Nottingham after watching Richard Jacques and TJ Davis perform for the first time. I was conversing with my two new friends Kevin and Svend about the event; “We could do something like this” I remember one of them saying. The thought didn’t cross my mind that two years later I’d be setting up a mixer desk and sound system at 8:30am for the Summer of Sonic 2008 event in London, while having a quick chat with Richard Jacques about life in general, as he sifted through the selection of CDs I’d brought along to play.

To say the event was a success would be a massive understatement; it was a roaring torrent of win. Walking around the event after finishing up on my slot on the decks, my ears were treated to what I can only describe as a choral rendition of Live and Learn – everyone was singing along to the song as they explored the event, and it was beautiful!!! I couldn’t walk five steps without spotting a familiar face, or having someone stop me to introduce themselves, to put a face to a (screen) name. Nigel Kitching was trapped in his corner, surrounded by fans asking questions having cherished copies of Sonic the Comic signed. The room was filled with people of different colours, creeds and ages, some having travelled hundreds, even thousands of miles to be here, and all to celebrate their one mutual love…Sonic the Hedgehog.
