New Line of Sonic Funko Pops Officially Revealed

Funko have announced a new range of Funko Pop products for the Sonic franchise. This will be the first addition to the line since the original set way back in 2013.

First up, there will be a Funko Pop keychain for Sonic with his gold ring, so if you want Sonic on the go there’s another option right here.

For the regular Funko Pop Vinyl line, there’s a much larger range of figures to get, although the amount of characters covered is the same as last time. Aside from the same Sonic with gold ring, the standard line also includes Sonic with a Chaos Emerald, Shadow the Hedgehog and Dr Eggman.

There will also be three figures that are exclusive to certain retailers. A glow-in-the-dark version of Sonic and ring will be exclusive to Toys R’ Us, Super Sonic will be exclusive to Gamestop and Shadow with a Dark Chao will be exclusive to Hot Topic.

No price point has been given for the figures or keychain, but it’s likely to be comparable to their other products. The slated release date for all of these is in December. If it comes out fast enough in the month, you might have another potential stocking filler in time for Christmas!

Sonic Hacking Contest 2017 Now Open For Submissions

This year’s Sonic Hacking Contest has opened its gates for would-be game hackers to show off their skill and creativity once again.

Running from Monday 20th November to Sunday 26th November, the Sonic Hacking Contest pitches the most cool and unusual Sonic game hacks the community has to offer to the public and judging panel in order to see which ones stand out as the best of the pack.

Alongside this will be a number of side shows such as the usual Hacking Expo that allows entrants to cut loose and show off, and other events to be announced closer to the contest period. There are some pretty notable attendees to be seen during the Interactive Contest Week, with confirmed streamers including SomecallmeJohnny, MegaGWolf, AntDude and many more to be revealed.

In order to provide a better experience for those playing the hacks, this year will introduce Quality Control Criteria that every hack has to meet in order to qualify for the contest. Essentially, make sure your hack is of a good standard before submitting. Joke entries aren’t allowed in the contest, but as long as it meets the QCC it can still be put forward for the Hacking Expo.

The deadline for preliminary submissions is October 29th. Following this, contest entrants will be allowed to refine their builds until the final build upload deadline of November 5th. If you are entering your hack into the expo and not the contest, the deadline for refinement is November 12th instead.

If you wish to read more about the contest or submit your own work, the Sonic Hacking Contest now has its own dedicated website. Because of this, any downtime issues that were experienced in the past should be mitigated. Please note that you need to have a verified Sonic Retro or SSRG account to submit entries.

Sonic x Hooters Collaboration Deal Includes Cool Sonic Forces Coasters

SEGA have announced the details for the Sonic Forces promotional campaign with Hooters Japan. SEGA To Open Official Online Store

SEGA are setting up shop online with a new official store. As announced in the latest official Sonic stream, this store is set to open as soon as next Tuesday.

The range that’s planned covers quite a large amount of franchises and products. While Sonic has the most prominence, the store will also start out with the SEGA Mega Drive, Golden Axe and Revenge of Shinobi, and there’s more on the way. Items range from plush toys and mugs to clothing, enamel pins and more. There’s even set to be some items exclusive to the store, and as soon as it launches you will be able to get the T-Shirt that was previously seen at TGS.

Currently, the store will be available to those in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Latin America. They are looking into plans to expanding its range in the future.

The latest issue of Licensing Today Worldwide makes mention of an online store opening as well, this one dedicated to personalised and customisable merchandise. It mentions the range starting with gifts, technology accessories and homeware, with a projected opening timeframe of this winter. It’s currently unknown if this is related to the SEGA Shop.

If you want something to purchase for a Sonic or SEGA-loving friend in time for Christmas, this might be the right place to look!

IDW Sonic Comic Set To Start April 2018

With New York Comic Con set to begin very soon, we have our first piece of news regarding the highly anticipated Sonic Comic that they will be putting out. According to the signage on their booth, the comic will be starting in April 2018.

This means that while it will be a six-month wait for the comic to come out, we should get the official solicit out in January, as per the usual comic cycle. That’s assuming they don’t give some details on the first comic sooner than that, which can happen for new series.

This is only a glimpse at what IDW have to announce for the Sonic Comic at NYCC though. They’re set to have a panel on October 8th that will reveal much more, so there’s that to look forward to. We will report any news that comes out of there, and any other Sonic comic news in the meantime.

Sonic the Hedgehog Movie To Be Developed by Paramount Pictures

After several months of silence, it has been announced that the long-anticipated Hollywood Sonic the Hedgehog movie will be produced by Paramount Pictures, moving from previous producer Sony Pictures.

Despite the move, many of the staff at Sony who were with the project are sticking with it still. Neal M. Moritz, Tim Miller and Toby Ascher are executive producing, Jeff Fowler is in the director’s seat (making this his directorial debut) and Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons are acting as co-producers. It’s still set to be a blend of live action and CG animation.

As of writing, it is unknown whether the movie will still make its current 2019 release date or be pushed back to a later date. We will update you on more movie news as it comes to light.

More Sonic X-Treme Material Released by Lead Artist

In August, we reported the discovery of several models in the portfolio of Sonic X-Treme lead designer Ross Harris, including the previously unknown inclusion of Amy Rose.

Harris has now released some videos on his own channel showing off several of the assets that were seen in the portfolio in action, as well as other concept videos done in Sonic X-Treme’s development. Aside from showing off Sonic animations and Amy run cycles, there’s an early Tails model, several Badniks, logo animations and mock-ups showing off how platforms and pipes would work.

Most notably, Harris himself confirmed that a lot of this work is from the early stages of Sonic X-Treme as opposed to later on (which is when the development trouble really affected a lot of these ideas). It’s really interesting to see what the game might have looked like before the more famous period of the game’s history.

My History with the Archie Sonic Comics

It’s been a month since the announcement that the Archie comics will no longer produce it’s long-running Sonic the Comic, and that a new partnership with IDW will continue to keep Sonic alive in print. Information on the new incarnation of the comic is set to be divulged at New York Comic Con in October. Before we look to the future of Sonic the Comic, why don’t we take a look at the past? In this feature I would like to talk about the many aspects of the American comics, starting with my own 24-year experience with the comic strip adventures.

Sonic Forces Set To Feature Tag Team Stages

With Gamescom having only just commenced, new information on Sonic Forces is already coming to light. Alongside the solo stages for modern Sonic, classic Sonic and the Avatar, there will also be a tag team option available.

From early information, it appears that this tag team mode involves the Avatar character teaming up with either Sonic, allowing their skills to be used in conjunction with each other for interesting gameplay combinations. In addition, there’s a unique feature to tag team mode called the double boost, which allows you to go even faster than the regular boost will allow.

As always, The Sonic Stadium will keep you up-to-date on all of the Sonic news coming out of Gamescom this week.

Mistaken Identity: Fang and Bean Are Not What You Think They Are

In the past, I’ve talked about Sonic facts that aren’t true. We’ve seen various reasons for such misinformation to become fact. However, I don’t think we’ve seen such a web of different reasons play out to get to the points we have with these misconceptions.

The misconceptions? We’ve been getting Fang and Bean’s species wrong for decades.

New Sonic Funko Pops Listed at Gamestop

An upcoming retail list from Gamestop has somehow leaked, and it has listings for four brand new Sonic the Hedgehog Funko Pops!

There are no images of the products themselves right now (as it is just a very early listing), but we know what the figures will be if they come out. They are as follows;

  • Sonic with Ring.
  • Sonic with Emerald (presumably a Chaos Emerald)
  • Shadow the Hedgehog
  • Dr. Eggman

The first two may just be new accessories added to the old Sonic Funko Pop that came out all the way back in 2013, but the last two would certainly be brand new, as the original line only had Tails and Knuckles in addition to Sonic.

If these do make it to store shelves, you may want to make a point of getting them while you can, as the old Funko Pops can fetch prices upwards of $100. We will be keeping an eye out for more news on the matter.

SEGA Colouring Book on the Way

In addition to the three children’s Sonic books found earlier, another interesting entry has been added to Penguin Random House’s catalogue.

It appears SEGA are releasing a colouring book, this time based on SEGA in general as opposed to Sonic. SEGA: The Official Coloring Book isn’t a regular kids’ colouring book, but instead an adult colouring book meant to act as stress relief. To compound this, the illustrator is listed as Patrick Spaziente, who Archie fans may recognise for being a prominent artist on the Sonic the Hedgehog comic back when Archie ran the books.

Archie Sonic Comic Officially Cancelled

After six months without any release and and vast amounts of speculation of it’s fate, SEGA of America have finally announced that it is ending their partnership with Archie Comics, effectively cancelling it. The tweet sent out by the official Sonic the Hedgehog account is below;

As the tweet also says, this doesn’t mean that SEGA won’t foray into comics in the future. But it is the end of an era, and what a legacy it left;

  • 290 regular issues of the main comic.
  • Four serial spin-off comics.
  • Over 500 issues combined.
  • Several crossovers with other franchises.
  • Dozens of beloved characters, stories and places that will always stick with the fans.

We are sure many fans, including ourselves are sad to see this chapter of Hedgehog history come to an end. We will keep on top of any future updates on what SEGA does in the comic industry next.

And with the final panel ever printed in Archie Sonic, that’s this case closed too.

Six-ish MORE Sonic the Hedgehog Facts (That Aren’t Even True)

“Don’t tell me it’s another one of those super-analytical articles.” “Afraid so.”

But now with nearly 26 years under its belt, the Sonic franchise is hardly limited to just those misconceptions. Archie Sonic Comic Update: Comics Still No-Show, More Concerning Updates

Another monthly update of the Archie comic situation, and things have cycled around once again, with similar updates to last month.

With Sonic Universe #95 not released for its slated April 12th release, and Sonic #291 not listed for release next week despite its previous given date of April 26th, we won’t be seeing any Sonic comics in April, and makes any May releases unlikely.
