More Sonic 4: Episode 2 Concept Art Arrives Like A Boss!

Hedgehog day continues with some more peeks at Sonic 4-2 concept art. This time in the form of the first Eggman boss reveal! This one is called “Serpentleaf” and besides sounding like a Pokemon, this giant plant mech seems to house a laser-firing Eggman within it’s pedals. The rest of the concept art shows that this first image is just the tip of the mecha-monster. He’s a quite a big boss for our blue blur to tackle. Now I want to say he’s an original creation for this game, but I know someone in the comments will prove me wrong and he appeared in like, Sonic Blast on Game Gear or something so forget it! Sega has released more concept art for the upcoming Sonic 4-2. Here, we see a Badnik called “Fullboar”. You know what he’s full of? Hedgehog-killing awesomeness, that’s what! This badnik is so deadly, Eggman got his flicky from a maximum security prison for killer flickies! (I lie.) Hopefully the full game will have even more original badniks and levels to keep it from being the mere copycat Sonic 4 was in design. Read on to find another new badnik. I aint (Sea) lyin’! (Ugh.)

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games Demo Available Now On 3DS E-Shop

Yes. There is a speed walking event. I'm not kidding.

Just released on the Nintendo E-Shop in North America comes a demo of the upcoming release of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The demo features five events. 25MM Rapid Fire Pistol, European Football (AKA American Soccer), Trampoline, 100m Backstroke, and BMX. Your character in each event is chosen at random and will be different with every playthrough. The European demo should be out very soon, but if the other M&S games didn’t thrill you, I doubt this one will either. I will say the controls in each event are very unique to each other and help give the game variety. Also, the last event is like a fully realized 3-D Excitebike.

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games will be available in North America on Valentines day, February 14th and in Europe on February 10th.

Has Yuji Naka Confirmed A Sonic Movie in the Works?

Both Sonic Wrecks and TSSZ News recently reported that Yuji Naka may have spilled the beans on an upcoming Sonic movie. On his latest Facebook and Twitter posts, he mentions visiting the Marza Animation Studios (Night of The Werehog, and most Sonic game CGI) and that they are in the process of making a Sonic movie. Whether it’s just more CGI for an upcoming Sonic Game or a full blown movie is yet to be known. Until we get more confirmation, treat this as rumor.

Sega Confirms No Sonic 4-2 For Wii

Ken Balough has recently confirmed what many wondered at the end of his Gamespot interview. Sonic 4 Episode 2 will not be making an appearance on the Wii console. This makes the third Multi-platform Sonic game in a row not to see release on the Wii. Here’s what Ken had to say.

But no – the reason Episode I was on the Wii was because we wanted to bring the Sonic 4 saga to the widest possible audience. Episode II unfortunately will not be coming to the Wii – for reasons most people have probably guessed, but that doesn’t mean the SEGA isn’t supporting Nintendo platforms, we have a very strong partnership and will continue to do so.

Oh well. Here’s hoping for a disc compilation at some point.

“The best” That’s the two words Paul Kaminski used to describe issue 230 and onward when I interviewed him back at the San Diego comic Con in July and I’ll be damned if he wasn’t right. After the mediocrity that was “Sonic: Genesis” and the bland story of Naugus trying to take the throne in the background of Sonic and Sally’s romance (which had way too much focus placed on it), I was worried that the quality of the book was starting to take a nose dive. But when tragedy hits and Eggman gets a huge victory, the story starts to get epic. This is Ian Flynn at his absolute best.

TSS Review: Sonic Generations (3DS)

Now, before I go into this review it should be noted that I’ve been a big fan of Dimps works up until late. Sonic Rush was one of my favorite Sonic games and I loved the first two Advance games. But lately, they seem to have been faltering. Sonic Colors on the DS was basically another Rush, but not quite as good as the previous two and incredibly sub-par compared to the Wii version. Sonic 4 I felt had good level design and was decent enough for a downloadable title, but the odd physics turned many people off. Now, they have their hands on their first foray onto the 3DS. According to an ad for a new executive producer at Sega of America, it looks like one of Sega’s IP’s will be getting a reboot. With Iizuka’s confusing talks about “a new standard for Sonic”, I worry that it may be our favorite blue Hedgehog again. Just when he’s making good ground and Modern Sonic’s finally finding his feet. We’ll probably know more in 2012 I’m sure. Until then, start biting those fingernails.

Water Palace Revealed as Final 3DS Level. Not Apotos.

Despite what we told you earlier in the month, it appears Apotos is not the final level reveal for Sonic Generations. According to a review from the Spanish official Nintendo Magazine, it is in fact Water Palace from Sonic Rush. Easy mistake to make given the backgrounds look very similar. Not to mention that this is the only portable Sonic Game represented and every other Sonic game shown is from the console versions.

In more good news, the magazine revealed that there will be over 100 missions that you can partake in the game. Also, they gave the game a high score of 90. We’ll see if the game lives up to that score as Sonic Generations releases on 3DS next week.

A new Japanese trailer has launched for the 3DS version of Sonic Generations. In a “blink and you’ll miss it” moment, you can see a quick glimpse of Apotos from Sonic Unleashed. This is the final zone to be revealed and now all zones for 3DS have been shown. Minus Casino Night Zone, they’re all first levels.

Digital Retailer Reveals Sonic Generations PC Specs

If pre-orders on Steam and Direct2Drive weren’t enough, digital game retailer GreenManGaming  is now showing a listing – with specifications – for the upcoming Sonic Generations. Now, you can’t put up specs for a game unless there’s an actual game to put up specs for! So for now, consider the game officially unofficially confirmed. As far as those specs go, I don’t think your $400 laptop will be handling it. Sorry.

Sonic Comic Review #226-229: “Sonic: Genesis”

In Sonic #225, Eggman created a new Death Egg that he took into space to reset the entire world. He not only succeeded, but shot Princess Sally to death with a gun turret. What precedes was supposed to be a celebration of Sonic’s 20th Anniversary, but turned into a boring, dragged out story that adds nothing to the main comic. The characters are for the most part, vanilla in their behavior and everything seems by the numbers. By the time it is over, everything is back to the way it was at the end of 225 making this entire detour pointless. This is Sonic The Hedgehog: Genesis.

It begins after the big reset with Sonic (who’s now looking more like his classic self, but still has the green eyes) running through Green Hill and bashing some Motobugs. He comes across Snivley who’s been capturing Flicky’s to encase into Badniks for his uncle, Dr. Eggman. Snivley attacks Sonic using the old ball and chain bit from the first boss encounter. Sonic smacks it good and Snivley flys away in his damaged Egg mobile. Sonic then opens up one of the cages from Sonic 2 (only now in a Sonic 1 level) to reveal some Flicky’s along with Antione Depardeu (his last name from the cartoons), Boomer (AKA Rotor. Now going by his old name. Wait, “Boomer” was the name of the traitor in Silver’s book. Could it be?) and…hoo-boy. Sally.

Now you’re likely saying “What? What problem do you have with Sally?” Well, you see folks, the last two major arcs in the comic have had half the attention taken away by Sonic and Sally’s relationship. One was supposed to focus on the villainous wizard, Iron Queen taking control of Mobotropolis, but half the story was focused on Sally dating a cyborg monkey and Sonic not liking it. The current arc is supposed to focus on the…villainous wizard, Ixis Naugus taking control of Mobotropolis (I’m starting to see a pattern here), but half the focus has been on Sally and Sonic dating again. Now, she’s back in this “not-a-reboot” and her and Sonic flirt with each other and make lovey-dovey faces at each other through the whole story. It’s not that I hate Sally, it’s just that I hate what’s being done with her and Sonic as of late. Well, let me rephrase that, I DO hate this version of Sally in particular. Those who accuse her of being a “Mary-Sue” may have some fuel to the fire here. She’s little miss perfect. Everyone’s in love with her. SHE gets her memories back whereas Antione and Boomer don’t. On top of all this, she can now communicate with birds by singing to them like she’s Snow flippin’ White. But the worst aspect of this Sally is her need to have a man constantly come save her. When she’s not constantly surrounded by Antione and Boomer, she’s wanting Sonic’s help. Late in the story, Sonic leaves them behind and Sally is constantly wishing she’d have tried harder to keep him around. So much for the tough, independent gal from the SATAM cartoons. This Sally is apparently nothing without a man in her life.

Now, Antione and Boomer are written fine if not by the book. Antione is silly, does his bad french accent and gets himself into a lot of trouble. Boomer is actually better than he’s been in years. Not only does he have his mechanical smarts, but brawn to match his brain. I’d like to see this version of Rotor stay around. Tails is done very well. He’s not only tech-smart, but back to being the over-eager boy who wants to go with Sonic on his adventures and stick by his side.  Sadly, as much as I liked Antione and Boomer, they added nothing to the story outside of comic relief.

Now back to the story. Part of what makes it boring is that it just goes through the paces of the classic games (Sonic 1 and 2 in this arc) without much plot development. This is especially true of the first two issues. Issue 226 has Sonic and the Freedom Fighters going through the stages of Sonic 1. Avoiding traps along the way and fighting Eggman in a classic boss fight at the end. Issue 227 has Sonic and the Freedom Fighters going through the stages of Sonic 1. Avoiding traps along the way and fighting Eggman in a classic boss fight at the end. Do you see where this could have been done in one issue instead of two?! Watching these characters go through the old videogames stages is not that entertaining. It’s like one of those old, throwaway promotional comics that would show the hero going through the first stage of the video game. It’s okay for a short read that tells you about the game, but very dull when stretched out over two or more issues.

Issue 228 does pick up a bit. Sonic has the Freedom fighters meet Tails for the first time. Boomer is wowed by Tails technical know-how (Watch it Boomer.  He WILL replace you). They then…go through the stages from Sonic 2. Avoiding traps. Yadda, yadda yadda. At least we finally get to know why Eggman reset the planet in the first place. It’s not explained in this particular story, but way back in the past, an alien race known as the BEM took away Eggman’s ability to Roboticize and freed those who already were. Doing the big reset apparently removed that little curse and now Eggman can roboticize (or as it’s called here, “Robotize”) the entire planet at his whim. Snivley mentions that the Death Egg is now powered by the seven Chaos emeralds which they managed to get off-panel. “SIGH!” Back on Mobius, Sally and Sonic come to a breaking point. Sally wants to shut down Eggman’s operations at the source while Sonic wants to tackle him head on. When Sonic gets a flashback of Sally’s death, he decides to head after Eggman without the Freedom fighters to keep Sally safe….WHERE’S THE LOGIC IN THAT?! He’s keeping her safe by leaving her on her own with the others when he’s been saving their necks from traps this whole time?!

Anyway, in issue 229 (which you should pick up just for the great fan funny I wrote in the back of the book “shameless self-plug”), Sally and the FF’s go through the Oil Ocean Zone while Tails flies Sonic straight to Eggmans base in the Metropolis Zone. Sally manages to shut down the oil plant which manages to…shutdown the power at Eggman’s base in Metrolpolis zone? Okay, wouldn’t shutting down an oil plant just kill fuel supply and not kill power directly, or am I just thinking too hard on this? Anyway, Eggman escapes on a ship to the Death Egg and Sonic follows. Both Sally and Sonic (but not the others) get most of their memory back and Sonic has a big duel with Eggman in his giant Egg Robo from the final boss battle in Sonic 2. He very stupidly mentions to Sonic that the Death Egg is powered by the seven Chaos emeralds to which Sonic takes a cut power line and feeds the Chaos energy current directly into himself. Now that he’s super, he disposes of Eggman’s mech easily and uses Chaos Control to reset the reset. Sonic then writes “Hi Sal” on a window of the Death Egg to Sally and as she waves goodbye to him (Note: she’s on the ground, He’s in space. How can she even see him?!), a white light bathes them both. The end.

Where do I begin? Well, I’ve already shown some of the negatives, so let me first shine some light on the good things in this mini series within a series. First off is the artwork. The first two issues were drawn by legendary Sonic artist, Patrick “Spaz” Spazinate with layouts by Tracy Yardley. The final two issues were done by Yardley himself, though you could barely tell because the transition was done so well. Actually, I preferred Yardley’s art on the last two issues. Spaz’s work was great of course, but it felt like a mish-mash of two artists instead of one because, well. It was! That doesn’t change the fact that it’s the best artwork I’ve seen in the book in years. If nothing else, Genesis is pretty on the eyes. Excellent work from both artists.

Also, it should be noted that while I don’t care for the way Sally was treated in the story (Remember girls, you need a man in your life at all times!) and Sonic to some extent, I felt the rest were handled well. Tails especially. I loved seeing him and Sonic racing through Chemical Plant Zone together. Now, back to the bad.

This comic was just plain dull. The second issue told the exact same story that the first issue did. It doesn’t pick up at all until the third issue and even then, it feels like it’s just going through the paces so you can see some of the levels from the old games. It’s slow and that’s not something I’m used to from Ian Flynn. Even in his worst stories (the Silver arc in Sonic Universe comes to mind), the pace is fast and full of action. Here, it feels like it’s plodding along to meet the four-issue mark so they can sell it as a graphic novel. It could have easily been told in two issues instead of four. It treads the same material over and over. “Another earthquake! Eggman must be behind it!” “Look out for XX trap at the XX zone!” “Let’s fight Eggman again!” “Look! I am Antione and I am doing something silly and getting into trouble! Not unlike C-3PO!” “I’m Sally and I want sonic so bad! Why did I not try harder to convince him to stay with us?!”

Now, I know what you’re gonna say. “But Jason! It’s not really over yet! 230 has a prologue!” It doesn’t matter. Sonic: Genesis was billed as a four-part mini-series within a series and that’s how I’m reviewing it. If 230 has some Genesis effects pouring into the main continuity (like Rotor staying Boomer I hope.), then maybe there was some value to come out of this book. But frankly, the way I see it now it was a pointless endeavor to try to add a 20th Anniversary celebration to the comic and a major letdown for an arc that was hyped since the San Diego Comic Con of last year. I think this would have been better off as a separate mini-series just to see how Ian would handle the comic if he were to start it all over again. In the end, “Genesis does”….nothing to move the plot of the main story. What a waste.

Overall Score: 5/10

By the way, since the main arc is so incredibly long, I’ll just be reviewing it issue by issue. Sonic Universe will still be review once every four issues unless you’d like me to review it issue by issue. In which case, comment below to tell me.

Coming from IGN is the latest trailer for Sonic Generations. This one covers the Dreamcast era. This time, we get a very tiny bit of Speed Highway to check out in both classic and modern. Well, the results are in and I have decided the winner for my Sonic Hype Contest (I stopped calling it a giveaway since that usually implies several winners). There was some really good posts and I had to narrow it down quite a bit. I’m surprised at just how many of you had Sonic Adventure 2 Battle as your first Sonic experience. I’m looking forward to both Sonic Generations and CD by the time they release. I fell in love with the franchise as soon as I first boarded down ridiculous declines in City Escape once I had the Gamecube for my birthday. Before I moved, I used to be a part of a little league baseball team [cute, huh?]. I’ll forever remember my coach as Coach Kevin. One time, we had a party at my place and he brought his kids over. His daughter lent me her pink GBA and I first played Sonic Advance. But when I finally had a Sonic game of my own, over all other franchises, I felt hooked. No, I became hooked. I fell in love with the Sonic franchise and wanted to play more. Hell, I spent over 250 hours on Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. And I still play it to this day. Over the years, Mega Collection was added to my collection and then I was exposed to the Genesis goods. To this day, I played nearly each and every Sonic title already conceived. Sonic CD is the only one I haven’t really had a chance playing, so I’ll gladly pay double for it, for at home and on the go! I’ll finally get the chance to experience Sonic CD! Metal Sonic’s debut and Stardust Speedway! The different ways to beat the game, through Good Futures or Time Stones, or just run through a metallic madness of a Little Planet! Generations, on the other hand, I and nearly every other Sonic fan, long time and new, young and old, will share the same feelings for that wonderful blue hedgehog on November 1st, and by December it will be worldwide. Sonic Generations isn’t just a game, it’s a celebration of all the fun that we have been provided, of that sense of gaming that no other franchise can provide, of everything Sonic and what’s made Sonic the Hedgehog still unstoppable to this day. And I wish to enjoy it with everybody. Hell, to some this could be their first Sonic game! Like 1991, why not start off with a blast for everyone? Some fans have been around since the beginning and Sonic still has plenty more coming. With Generations being the culmination of everything Sonic, there’s no way people can’t enjoy this title. Sonic Generations, I count down the days until your release with great anticipation!

I’m most excited for Sonic Generations because of the endless possibilities of the gameplay. It’s finally showing the fans What he’s made of. We’ve lived and learned in His World and I can’t wait to experience it all over again. It doesn’t matter that his past games haven’t been a dream of an absolution this game will be awesome. Once this releases it will be a lazy day livin’ in paradise! :)

Being that it’s the 20th Anniversary for our hero Sonic the Hedgehog, I’m excited to see the game Sonic Generations the most; I’m always excited and grateful to see new Sonic
games come out, but this was different when seeing classic/retro Sonic pop out of nowhere when modern Sonc was leaping into the air after the shuttle loop scene from the first trailer. I didn’t realize how much I miss seeing classic Sonic’s design, though I love both designs, and Sonic will always be Sonic, it’s really special and nostalgic to be having both Sonic’s together in the most beloved zones and levels, it’s a chance to re-live the moments, but with new mixes! It gives a chance for the younger generation that missed out on the classics to see what we fell in love with. I have faith in this game that it will be the start of Sonic’s success once more. But the real reason I’m excited about the game is a little melancholy, but seeing how far
Sonic has come and how much he’s been the biggest impact of my life, growing up with Sonic; of course the 20th anniversary game is going to be the most exciting thing for me! Sonic was
my friend when I didn’t have any and when I had nobody. He’s in my happiest memories, even the most simplest times of just playing video games of Sonic’s adventures, they brought me
much joy and still do. And how just looking at a poster of Sonic, his cocky smile some how reached me, it saved me from my most sorrowful moment of my life. And even though he’s just
a cartoon, he’s real to me. I just wish for Sonic to have as much of an impact as I did to others. Just complete happiness and how he’s still running after 20 years! I’m thankful for being

In all of my years growing up, Sonic has always been a majority of my life. Probably the biggest majority there is. With Sonic Generations coming out and more Sonic games to come, I finally get to look back at all parts of my childhood in one game. Just seeing how two different sets of Sonic fans can come together under one game chills me down to the very bone. I spent my life playing the Sonic series and Sonic Generations is sure to be a true fan favorite for years to come. As if it wasn’t enough, Sonic is a bigger part of my life than I have mentioned so far. Being a fan who has collected a great amount of the games, I decided to go to college and learn anything I could on being a video game concept artist for trying to one day achieve my dream job of joining SEGA’s Sonic Team. I’ve learned there is more to the job than that though. Roughly enough, I finally came to realization that I need to do more than be a concept artist if I ever hope to join the Sonic Team. I’ve come to accept whatever it is in life I need to do to achieve my dream, no matter what anyone thinks about me. Thank you Sonic for being the inspiration to my life. Thank you SEGA for giving me a childhood. Lastly, thank you fans all enjoying what can be considered the greatest gaming hero in history. Sonic is only as big as his fans, and I hope he continues to have fans for years to come. Long live Sonic.

The fact that Sonic inspired you to get yourself into college and fight for your dreams is more than enough to get you a nomination. Hope you succeed in your endeavors.

I am very excited for Sonic Generations, because it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to relive Sonic’s history in a new, but nostalgic way by reinventing everything from the 20 years of the franchise’s existence, including the most recent adventures, in an almost brand new way! When I found out this game existed, I was more excited than I ever had been before for a Sonic game- not because the others were bad, but because this one seemed to be the all-encompassing, definitive experience fans and non-fans alike could experience and know that “this is Sonic the Hedgehog, the way it is meant to be- bright, colorful, not too serious, and most importantly, fun!”. This game may be the one game that actually triumphs as my absolute-favorite, and that’s because it’s a nice blend of new and old while trying its hardest to represent the original playstyle in the original games (Sonic 1, 2 and 3 & Knuckles, and even CD) as accurately as it can, and also give us the best of the modern playstyle as well, with an improved drift, and improved controls at slower speed, and even more 3D and platforming! With each piece of info revealed about this game, officially or accidentally, I find myself becoming more and more excited, and was lucky enough to even play the game, not only on the PS3 with the limited home demo that’s expired by now, but also the 360 and 3DS versions at the Penny Arcade Expo. This game represents what it means to be a Sonic fan to me, and I couldn’t express my joy any better than saying that Sonic Generations is the ultimate celebration of a franchise.

I liked this one because it was well written and straight to the point. The exact kind of post I was looking for.

Two words, Sonic Generations
As I sit here remembering and jotting down the best moments of my childhood, many are filled with the colorful pixilated zones of Sonic the Hedgehog. If it was one thing I loved as a kid it was speed, so much so that my family and I used to be hooked on racing our ATV’s while we spent weekends camping by the shoreline somewhere in Ensenada, Mexico. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was the first video game I ever owned, I remember plugging in my fresh-out-of-the-box Genesis and putting the cartridge in. The first thing that came up was a licensing screen for Sega’s hardware and what followed after was one of the most iconic presentation screens in the golden age of video games. A blue blur shoots to the left and right of the screen at high-speed, the television chants Sega in a static harmony, the screen darkens and then begins to sparkle, and a familiar Blue Hedgehog pops of out of the title emblem with his two tailed friend. At that moment I smiled and pushed the start button, the rush of flying down the long grassy stretches and the checkered corkscrew bridges of Emerald Hill was some of the most fun I had as a kid and after days of memorizing every cheat code and learning about the different secret pathways. I took a heavy interest in the creative design of the series, I would desperately attempt to draw Sonic and capture the speed he obtained going down the steep incline in Chemical Plant Act 2 with a cheap golf pencil and a dozen sheets of white copy paper. I was 5 years old and 14 years later I’ve applied to the Art Institute here in my hometown of San Diego, CA hoping to major in Illustration and Animation. Sonic Generations brings back so many cherished memories, watching the initial trailer practically brought a tear to my eye. Playing the demo of the classic and modern Stage at the San Diego Comic Con was breath taking. It’s everything old and new fans dream for. As I wait impatiently for the release of Sonic Generations I think of the different games I’ve played in the franchise and how we as sonic fans have been through the great and the ugly (I put a huge emphasis on ugly) of the series and have finally been treated to a great renaissance in the series. Sonic is making his return back on the gaming scene and I know Sonic Generations will set it in stone.

Dude! (Yes, I tend to say “dude” a lot. I’m from California so sue me.) I probably met you at the Con. I was at Archie’s booth several times and interviewed Aaron Webber there. I hung out there a lot on Sunday watching others play the game. Great post, but I gotta say, why didn’t you just buy the stuff I’m giving away? You were there! XD

Asking me to choose one game that I’m hyped about is kinda like asking someone to choose between children. However, I’m probably gonna have to go with Sonic Generations. Why? Well, it all goes back… See, I’ve been captivated by the Blue Blur ever since I first saw him, in an ad for Sonic X. I know, I know, horrible show, but whatever. Seeing him run across the screen was awesome, and I immediately stopped watching my Saturday morning cartoons and went and told my mother of the awesomeness that had just graced my 6 year old mind. I ended up getting both Sonic Mega Collection and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle a bit later. Due to this, I’ve never had a problem with Classic and Modern. They’re just two playstyles, two different but amazingly fun playstyles. For crying out loud, I didn’t even know there were different designs! I just thought that was how Sonic was drawn in sprite form! But I digress. For years, Sonic has been an intergral part of my life ever since that one day. Seeing as I’ve never had an older sibling, Sonic filled that role for me, teaching me many things. To see him hit that roadbump with Shadow and 06 (Heroes is debatable) really hurt me, and I always hoped for the better. Sonic Generations is a celebration of 20 years for Sonic, but for me, it’s a celebration of the one who has made me who I am today, through his games and his character. My friends may think that Sonic’s too childish, but I disagree, because he’s given me so much. So here’s to Sonic, and another 20 years of all things blue.

This is a good example of a younger, more modern Sonic fan who has his head straight. He likes both the modern and classic games, but knows a bad Sonic game when he sees one. He loved Sonic X as a kid, but is more critical of it now. Good work.

Sonic Comic Review: Sonic Universe #29-32 Scourge: Lock-Down

A.K.A. How Scourge got his groove back.

Scourge is the kind of Sonic character I’d normally hate. He looks like a fan character re-color and he’s evil only because he’s a Sonic from another world where everyone’s morals are in reverse. The good guys are bad and the bad guys are good. The McDLT’s are always ruined because the hot side stays cool and the cool side stays hot. But I’ll be danged if Ian Flynn doesn’t know how to write the guy in a way that always makes for a fun story. He’s basically a parody of Sonic with all of Sonic’s cockiness and arrogance turned up to 11. It makes you end up liking him BECAUSE he’s a jerk rather than in spite of.

The story begins with Scourge at the lowest point of his life. After turning into Super Scourge and coming very close to defeating Sonic for good in “Hedgehog Havoc”, he was ultimately defeated and put into the No-Zone inter-dimensional prison where he is picked on and beaten every day thanks to an inhibitor collar that kills his speed powers and dampens his normal abilities. His only “friends” are Al and Cal (AKA Horizont-Al and Verti-Cal). An odd duo from much earlier Sonic tales. They are are sort of mystical Elmer-Fudd-looking beings who are gods in their own dimension. They take pity on Scourge and try to befriend him. They’ll find out later that no good deed goes unpunished.

Scourge has given up so badly that he doesn’t even bother to fight back at all. It’s a good start in the first issue as it makes you have sympathy for the devil. Luckily for him, his girlfriend Fiona comes in and gets herself along with the Destructix. She needs Scourge for a big job and has a plan to bust him and the Destructix back out of prison. At first Scourge refuses and yells at Fiona for possibly getting him killed since anyone building up a gang in prison is targeted for extermination by the evil King Max. But soon he realizes he needs them to escape and has to regain their trust over the next four issues as they plan their big breakout.

Now, you may be asking yourself, “What’s the No-Zone?” Well, much like DC’s infinite earths, there are multiple Mobius worlds across many dimensions. The No-Zone contains a police force that tries to stop any criminals who would misuse cross-dimensional traveling. Yes, there are alternate versions of our favorite Sonic characters in this dimension, but they all begin with the letter Z. Zonic, Zector, Zouge and Warden Zobotnik.

This is where some of the real fun of the book lies. Because it takes place in an inter-dimensional prison, there are opportunities for some fun cameos. You’ll be scouring the artwork to see some of them including the Werehog (twice in the off-panel strips), a muscle-bound Amy, an Angry Bird, Void, Bebop and Rocksteady, even Mephilis shows up to deliver the funniest line in the story.

This story arc has everything.  Good humor from the many cameos and other jokes. Great character development for Scourge as he goes from punching bag to king of the hill. But mostly, we finally get to see the back stories of the Destructix and more on Fiona. Before this arc, the Destructix were just a group of villains with little known about them. Since Scourge has to regain their trust if he wants to get out, he gets to know each one and in turn we get to know a lot more about them. Fiona’s back story is a bit tragic as she recalls her tough past and has learned to rely on no one but herself. Yet, here she goes and risks long term imprisonment to rescue the man she loves who only seems to love himself.

While, the first three issues is mostly all about character exploration and development, the fourth issue is all-out action as the prison escape takes up almost the entire issue. Scourge gets to show the great leader he can be even when he’s going back into the prison to get petty revenge on the inmates who mistreated him. He also “rewards” Al and Cal which helps cause a great distraction. Does he escape? Does anyone get left behind? I’ll leave it to you to read and find out.

While I did enjoy this story arc immensely, I do have some minor nitpicks to discuss. First off is the inhibitor collars the inmates wear. While they do seem to cut off any powers, they also seem to barely dampen anyone’s natural abilities. Flying Frog can still shimmy his skinny body through prison bars and use his long tongue as a weapon. Sgt. Simian can still bench press a few hundred pounds and Lightning Lynx still seems to have his ninja abilities. In short, it almost makes these collars seem kind of pointless outside of tracking everyone.

Also (Spoilers folks!) I have a problem with the Deus Ex Machina that helps them in their escape attempt. It’s in a box with their normal belongings when they were first brought in. I won’t say what it is but I doubt a Zone guard would not recognize it and what it does. I would have liked a better explanation of how they sneaked it in.

That said, Scourge: Lockdown is the best Sonic story arc this year. It’s highly entertaining, full of humor and gives great insight to the characters. As usual Tracy Yardley does a great job with the artwork and gives us tons of cameos to scour the book to find. I recommend picking up these issues at your local comic store, or you could wait a year or two for the graphic novel version. Either way, if your a Scourge fan, it’s a must read.

By the way folks, i’m going to try to make these Sonic comic reviews to be a regular thing from now on. I’ll be reviewing Genesis in about two weeks when the final part of that story arrives. I’m going to try to do it story arc by story arc, but with the main book having a long, branching story you can expect some single issue reviews as well.

Sonic Generations Achievements Revealed

 “Spoilers”

Xbox360Achievements.org has revealed some slightly spoiler-ish achievements for Sonic Generations. This includes getting achievement points for talking to all of Sonic’s friends and completing their challenges. Many of the achievements still remain in secret. Apparently, there is also a hard mode in the game, as it is the only way to get a Classic Eggman avatar costume seen below.

 

With just over a month before the game’s release, we are getting into spoiler territory now. For those who don’t want spoilers, it might be prudent to start passing over any more Sonic Generations news so you can be somewhat spoiler-free before the game’s release.

New Sonic Generations 3DS Footage Reveals Metal Sonic in Casino Night

This morning on Nintendo’s Japanese website comes screens and a thrilling new video of Sonic Generations 3DS. The video is almost as sharp as playing the game on your 3DS and shows off some of Green Hill, Mushroom Hill and brand new video of the Special Stage taken from Sonic Heroes. Also, take note of one of the final screens. It shows a race between Metal and Sonic at Casino Night Zone! The 3DS version is looking better and better. No release date has yet been set on Sonic Generations for 3DS.

A pair of Sonic Anniversary T-Shirts Coming To Japan

Gonintendo reports on this pair of T-Shirts coming soon to Japan. The one on the left is a beautiful image from the Green Hill Zone in Sonic Generations and will be available in November for 6,300 yen ($82 USD) while the one on the right is a typography shirt that looks like one you’d buy for your kid at the local Wal-Mart and will be available in October for 3,045 yen ($40 USD). Both shirts are made by Cospa. whether or not they will be made available for import is unknown.

More Sonic Animations. Classic’s Time to Shine

Yesterday, we posted video from twilightzoney of Modern Sonic’s animations in Sonic Generations. New Big Arms Music for Generations 3DS

Why?!! Why did this guy have to beat the boss so quickly?! I was rockin’ out here!

From Gamescom and NintendoWoldReport comes more SG 3DS video this time the same boss fight we showed you from E3, but with much, much improved music. I think this helps prove that the modern music in Mushroom Hill is a place holder ‘cuz look at the drastic change in the music here. Enjoy.

Rumor: Does Sonic Generations Have Zones inside of Zones?

A recent hands on preview of Sonic Generations posted in digital spy has some interesting info. It seems you may be able to go to Flying Battery Zone inside of Spagonia.

Confetti rains down from the skies like multi-colored rain, and Robotnik’s airship looms menacingly in the background. After racing across the quaint cityscape, classic Sonic scaled a Big Ben-esque tower and climbed up the clock hands.

A spin attack performed in the center of the clock face caused it to swing open and collide with Robotnik’s airship, enabling the hedgehog to climb on board. The outcome was entirely different when modern Sonic reached this juncture in his version of the stage.

Aided by the power of his boost metre, the contemporary character propelled himself to the highest point on tower and used it as a launch pad.

Look Familiar?

Then there’s the case of some of the latest screenshots. In fitting classic Sonic into the more modern levels, they seem to have been greatly inspired by the past. Doesn’t this screenshot above remind you of Hydrocity Zone? Plus, remember the surprise of Metal Sonic’s level being from Sonic CD? Even though there doesn’t appear to be a full Sonic 3 level to be coming in the game, it does seem like bits of Sonic 3 may be found throughout. Who wants to bet that classic Crisis City will play an awful lot like Lava Reef?

Classic and Modern Videos of Mushroom Hill

There has been plenty of news and videos coming out of Gamescom this week. One of the latest ones, is some video of Mushroom Hill from the 3DS version of Sonic Generations. The classic version has a slightly remixed version of the Mushroom Hill music and has it’s level laid out almost identically to the original (Why make the same level?). The modern version has direct audio and the original MH music (probably a placeholder). It seems to play well with modern Sonic’s abilities even if the player doesn’t play all that well. One interesting note is the jumping in and out of backgrounds.

BTW, during the modern video, at 2:10 the player gets stuck for awhile. I recommend you skip ahead to 3:30.

Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Olympics: New Gamescom Trailer

From the Gamescom event in Germany comes the latest Mario and Sonic London 2012 trailer. The trailer hosts some new footage showing events not yet shown such as synchronized swimming, cycling, dream hurdles and dream gymnastics. Now, I have to wonder if Blaze’s “fear of heights” thing from Sonic Rush Adventure was a huge lie as she seems to have no problem spinning around on poles thousands of feet in the air. Then again, she has no problem running up walls hundreds of feet in the air in that same game. 😉

Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Olympics will be available on Wii in November and 3DS February 2012.

The Spindash Celebrates Its 50th Episode

Hey folks! I wanted to let you in on a lesser known Sonic Podcast The Spindash “Your source for all things blue, rapid and spikey” as it has just celebrated it’s 50th episode with a 2 hour long show. This small podcast has been running for about 2 years now and is hosted by GX Echidna, Evil Dr. Reef and Saber Pilot with myself as the occasional guest. In this episode, we discuss the Chemical Plant Zone, current Sonic news, a look back at issue #50 of the Archie Sonic comic and some other silly stuff. So, if you got an MP3 player and/or 2 hours to kill, check ’em out!

Archie Starts a Sonic Magazine in the U.S.

 

Much like their ”Life with Archie” magazine, Archie is planning a quarterly magazine dedicated to Sonic “Sonic Super Special”. Similar to the UK’s “Sonic the Comic”, it will be mostly made of reprints of some of the bigger Sonic stories from the comics (although the UK version had new stories in theirs), but with some extras and articles included. The first issue arrives in late October.

Interview: Aaron Webber

Sega had a very strong presence at the San Diego Comic Con this year. Not only did they have a Sega Arcade down in the Gaslamp Quarter, but on the floor they had Captain America at the Marvel booth and two demo stations of Sonic Generations at the Archie Comics booth. Surprisingly (or maybe not), there was no 3DS Generations demo anywhere to be found.

At one of the demo stations, I found Sonic brand manager Aaron Webber. Trust me when I say there’s no more likable fella working at Sega. Look at him. He’s just so gosh darn huggable ya wanna stuff him in your Warner Bros Comic Con bag and take him home with “AHEM!” Anyway, as he manned the station, many people were checking out the demo. Mostly the modern version. In fact, one fan kept coming back every day and managed to beat Aaron’s record on modern by one second! When he had some time, we went to the back of the Archie booth and set up an interview. (I wanted to snuggle, but he refused. XD Kidding, kidding.)

Have you been having fun at the Con this weekend?

Aaron – Definitely.  It’s been very, very busy. We’ve had tons of people playing Sonic Generations. There’s a lot of standing so your legs get a little tired, but beyond that, it’s good.

Classic Tails has recently been shown alongside of a modern model. Since we now have classic Sonic and classic Tails, will we bee seeing classic representations of other characters? 

Aaron – For the most part, classic Sonic and classic Tails are the only one’s you’re gonna see. There’s not much I can go into after that but stay tuned. Classic Sonic and Classic Tails fans should be pleased.

Along with Classic Tails, the Chemical Plant was shown. Along with Metal Sonic chasing Classic in what looks like Stardust Speedway from Sonic CD.  Will we see other surprises like this? Will boss fights be on separate stages?

Aaron – You mean will the boss fights be taking place in their original settings? That’s a very good question. In the majority of cases, you should probably expect that. The other question would be “What are those other bosses?” and you’re just gonna have to wait on that.

Now, the classic demo was recently released and…..I’m sure you’re aware was then hacked into and some assets were leaked. I’m not gonna go into that much as I’m sure you don’t wanna go into that yourself. However, one of the things shown was that there are several missions in each act. One of them appears to be a “Co-op” mission. We know that as you finish levels, you free your friends and the world opens up more. Are Sonic’s friends playable in the game once they’re unlocked or after the game’s finished?

Aaron – Ah the leak. I really wish that hadn’t been published. Several of those assets are from an older build and will not be in the final game. It’s a misrepresentation. As we stated in the beginning, only classic and modern Sonic are playable. You will see many of Sonic’s friends in the game but you will not play as them.

I noticed the demo released to the public felt a tiny bit different to the one at E3. Is this an older build of the game?

Aaron – Actually, the download is a more current build. 

There have been some criticisms of the demo from different forums. Mainly in his short rolling and his need for spindashing to gain enough speed for some loops. Is there a reason for classic Sonic’s heaver pull on gravity? (I mean, he is chubbier.)

Aaron – Well, there’s always a reason. I’m sure the question on everyone’s mind is A.) Will it change? and B.) Why was it done? The team in Japan was working to emulate the physics of the original as close as possible. It’s not 1 to 1 or 100% ratio, but more like 90-95% in looking at the original and looking at Generations. 

Well, they are trying to emulate classic Sonic physics on an engine built originally for Sonic Unleashed or Modern Sonic if you will. 

Aaron – Yes, but improved upon as well. That’s kind of the key in that it’s not 100% but very close. In this case I know that the rolling for example, I think is good feedback. I’ve already sent that back to Sonic Team. But a key element like rolling for example, to change that drastically now would mean that they would have to redesign and test every single level, every single move to make sure this change in the roll doesn’t break something. Like maybe he’s supposed to go off this ramp in a certain way and he ends up overshooting it greatly. In this late of the stage in development, a change that small could break the whole game. Like taking one brick from the bottom of a wall you’re building, it could make the whole foundation crumble. 

That’s like when someone on Neogaf, they posted a video in which they changed the value by 1 and it changed the roll dramatically, but even he said it would probably break the game on other levels.

Aaron – Exactly. When you see something like that, it looks so simple to fix, but it’s not so easy. The long and the short of it is, it’s still good feedback. Just like with Sonic 4. People said “Sega didn’t listen! They didn’t care!” But we did listen and we do care and now look at Generations. We’re improving step by step by step. It’s very difficult to go from 0-100 and get everything perfect on the first go, but we are doing our absolute best to do right by the fans and make everything the best we can, and I hope the demo – which I think is really, really solid even with the rolling – is something they’re enjoying.

I think so. I know this has gotten a much more positive response on forums than Sonic 4 had and Sonic 4 still got pretty good review scores. One thing I’ve noticed since E3, is that there are certain spots in the demo that have what I would call “scripted physics”. For instance, in the first corkscrew tunnel, Sonic instantly goes into a high-speed spindash when getting near it whereas the other tunnels have a rock in front that Sonic has to bust with a spindash to get through it. Also, there’s the wooden bridge with a loop. Get close enough and Sonic takes over himself and runs through it with no input from the player. Are there reasons why these particular areas are programmed like this or will this be fixed in the final version?

Aaron – Well, even in Sonic 1 when you would go through those tunnels, it would give you an automatic speed boost even if you went through them backwards. So even if you went uphill, it would give you that speed boost. What’s interesting here is from what I’ve played around with in the demo is that if you go in as a spin, it will push you though the tunnel, but if you run full speed it won’t force you though or force you into a spindash which is interesting, so I’d say these spots are kinda half-scripted. It’s going to check to see if you are in ball form before shooting you through which is kind of cool. You’ll see some of that stuff in the game, but not a lot. I wouldn’t use the term “scripted” which is kind of a derogative term used like “scripted vs. non-scripted” in some Sonic games in the sense that some scripted events are cool and dynamic, but mostly you have control over.

I won’t say much about the hack, but one of the cool things from it, was that someone put modern Sonic in the classic level and vice versa and it was actually pretty cool and looked playable. Especially modern Sonic. Is that something that Sonic Team would look into adding?

Aaron – (Laughs) That’s definitely something I couldn’t answer. That would be up to the dev team in Japan. There’s no intention to my knowledge of flip-flopping them into each other’s stages. Admittedly, the “what-if” scenarios are pretty neat.

In the classic Sonic games, you would have to press down and rapidly tap jump to make Sonic spindash. In Generations, it can be done the old fashioned way, or the simpler “hold X” style. But that style can be done even when running full speed or on sharp inclines. Is there a reasoning behind that? 

Aaron – I couldn’t give you the exact reasoning as that would be up to the dev team. I can tell you it makes it a lot simpler and in many ways that’s a good thing. That said I’m sure a lot of the purists might think that it makes it too easy. I think this is something where the dev team is trying to please both groups which is why the other way is optional. In fact, many of the kids playing Generations here at Comic Con were unfamiliar with the spindash and were getting stuck. I told them to hold X for a second and that’s simple and they got that quickly. But at the same time, you want to appease the retro fans. Which is why down and A is also in there. Personally, I get both sides. I kind of like what they’ve done here to make it easier to play for kids who’ve never played a classic Sonic game before. Although I did have one eight year old kid who told me Sonic CD was his favorite game. I was flabbergasted and told him: “Kid, you’re awesome!”

(Laughs) Awesome. I’ve noticed, not so much in modern, but in classic mode the environments are so lush and so detailed that Sonic can get lost in them. There’s one time where I’m hitting a spring and collecting gold rings and I see a platform to right of me that makes it look like I can land on it, but I fall right through because it’s just background detail. Is there a way for them to make it so Sonic pops out a little, or possibly fade the background a bit?

Aaron – If you turn the 3D option on and you have a 3D TV, Sonic will definitely pop out. Alternatively, I know exactly the spot you’re talking about as I’ve made that same mistake myself. Beyond that, there’s not too many spots where that happens. Most backgrounds are either easy to recognize as background or deep in the back. It’s a very minor thing and I wouldn’t worry too much about it

Now in the case of the 3DS, is there much you can tell us of the streetpass feature?

Aaron – There’s not too much I can say about the 3DS version in that regard. 3DS has some very cool stuff and is very unique. We went the idea that we can either do a lazy port or build something from the ground up that’s very cool and very unique and we went with the latter. I can’t tell you much right now, but stay tuned in the near future as we will have a lot of info going out about the 3DS version as we go forward.

What excites you most about Sonic Generations?

Aaron – What excites me most? At first it was just classic Sonic being there. Now, it’s that we get to introduce Sonic to two very distinct generations of people at the same time. We get the younger fans who love modern Sonic and we get to introduce them to classic Sonic and show them why so many of us older fans adore the Genesis games. But likewise, we get to pull in the older fans who might not have played a Sonic game in a long time. I’ve had some people come up to me who’ve said “I’ve not played a Sonic game in 15 years, but this looks amazing!” Every time I hear that (and it’s happened like, 150 times) it’s such a nice feeling that this is finally the game we can show that Sonic is really back. While Colors and Sonic 4 did a good job of bringing us back, but Generations is the one to unite both fans. While we may not always make 100% of both Sonic fans happy all of the time, but I’m betting the majority will be very pleased with this game.

One final question, I know Takashi Iizuka has stated that he feels Sonic Adventure on is the main cannon and that the current Chaotix are not the same ones from 32X Chaotix and he doesn’t seem to want to use any of the real old characters. While we do have poster in City Escape of some of the forgotten characters, one of those being Nack/Fang. There’s a poll on First Four Figures to see is there is enough interest to do a Fang statue. If this does come to fruition, do you see a possibility of Sonic Team bring him back in the future?

Aaron – That’s a good question, but one I couldn’t decide myself. We could make the case for that if enough fans ask for him. (But PLEASE don’t spam our Facebook. PLEASE! My bosses will not be happy.) There are much better ways to get people to recognize a fan following. I mean look at NiGHTS in SASASR. The entire campaign that Trippi and Digi (Sorry if I’m not getting the names right) did which was wonderful. So, if you really want to see Nack there’s always hope. It’s not my decision of course so I can’t answer the question completely. Make the case for it. Try to rally support. That helps. But, Sonic is so out there anyway, with so many cannons and universes. I mean, we are standing in the Archie booth right now. But, if you really want it, I say don’t give up, rally support around it and who knows?

NEW COMMENT:  On the last day, I was pretty much done with Comic Con and just hung out with Aaron for a bit at the Archie booth. I played the modern demo some more and watched as some really skilled players went back and fourth on the game. They were kind enough to let others play. I was amazed at one player’s skill. Ends up he’d been hanging out for quite awhile. Aaron has decided to leave one final comment relating to this.

Aaron – One of the things we’ve had a lot of fun with here at SDCC is speed running – for the few unfamiliar with the term, it just means getting to the end of the stage as fast as you can.

Trying to get as fast a time as possible is surprisingly addicting – so much so that at least 20 people have returned to our booth every single day to try and beat their previous times. One guy named Sergio literally spent three days here at the Generations console perfecting his time, teaching others how to complete it faster, and waiting to jump on again when the lines died down. As a result, he even managed to match my best time for the level!

So to anyone reading, here’s a little challenge when the game finally comes out: Can you beat 1 Minute, 49 seconds as Modern Sonic in Green Hill Zone? As it stands – and the level may still change slightly – that’s the fastest legitimate time the world has seen thus far. I’m most excited to see what tricks and strategies fans will use to complete even faster runs!

Down at the 2500 isle of the San Diego Comic Con, Archie Comics had thier biggest booth yet. Stationed next to IDW Comics and Boom Studios. In recent years, Archie comics has been doing well at making their presence known, making headlines with the “Archie Marries” and “Kevin Keller” series. Their biggest acquisition in the past year has been the Mega Man license. Sales of the comic have been doing phenomenally well pushing past sales of their former top seller and still big seller Sonic the Hedgehog. Sega was also at Archie’s booth with two demo stations playing Sonic Generations. Needless to say, as a Sonic fan, I hung out there quite a bit. On Friday, I sat down with Archie Comics editor Paul Kaminki to discuss Mega Man, Cosmo and all things Sonic. Here’s what he had to say.

Last year, you used one word to hint at the events of this year “Genesis”. Ian hinted at the events of #225 with “BLAM!BLAM!BLAM!” What is the one word you would use to hint at #230 and beyond?

Paul – The best. I’ve seen 230 and 231 pencils and it’s the best stuff we’ve ever done. It’s the fallout from 225, the aftermath of Genesis and the road to 250 all in one. Ben Bates worked on those and he outdid himself. He worked on 232 and it’s coming along fantastic as well.

Awesome. Out of the main four Sega characters, Knuckles, Tails and Sonic have all had their backgrounds fleshed out well. But Amy Rose seems to have little known about her. Will we ever see an arc about her backstory?

Paul – Yes. You won’t see too much in the near future, but you will see some more of that next year. Amy will be taking up a larger role as well. I really can’t say to much more than that, but Sonic’s gonna need her help.

Sounds very interesting. With Sally’s life hanging on the line, it seems to have divided some of the fanbase. Some who want her to live and some who’d love to see her dead. Will the outcome of this current story be able to please both sides?

Paul – I think so. It satisfied me anyway. (Laughs) We’re not trying to disrespect the character at all. We just want to make a real interesting story like you’ve never quite seen with her before. It’s easy to say she’s got Jean Grey syndrome in that she’s taken out and brought back again over and over, but I think what we’ve done with her and what we’re about to with her is unique. Whether she’s alive or dead, her story is not over at all.

In Sonic Genesis, it’s kind of a flashback to Sonic 1 and 2 as Eggman reset the world. Will the effects from the Genesis storyline affect the Prime World at all?

Paul – Yea. Definitely. With some characters you might not expect it to have an effect on. It will have an effect on the cast going forward.

I kind of like what was done with Rotor/Boomer in Genesis. Making him smarter and tougher.

Paul – Yea. I saw online that this reviewer’s little kid loved it when Boomer smashed up the Caterkiller. I love him too! Mike (Perrilito) hates him. He keeps telling me. “Why do you keep using the dumb Walrus?” I tell him “Cuz Rotor’s cool man!” (Laughs) Genesis has some great qualities that I think will transition nicely into the main universe.

Will Silver’s search for the traitor come to fruition soon?

Paul – VERY soon. 

Moving onto Mega Man which is doing absolutely incredible in sales. Are you surprised at the high sales in the direct market? Even surpassing Sonic by quite a bit?

Paul – Yes. Quite happy with direct market and newstands too. We saw a particular spike in newstands that we’re hoping to stretch ever further with the graphic novel later this year. Because, I became a big fan of Fables through the graphic novels so I’m hoping more people will become fans of Mega Man and Sonic through the trades. 

I think the first 3 issues were handled very well. It seems less of a game adaption as it does about a boy being sent off into a war and the effects it has on him. In issue #2, he has to kill other robots for the first time and he hates it. He doesn’t like killing his own kind. In issue #3, he’s become desensitized to it and he starts getting an attitude. Did you and Ian mean to develop his character in this manner?

Paul – His character is the most important thing we’re trying to juggle. It’s very important to us that we develop this character properly in the first arc and beyond.

The only small complaint I had about the first three issues is that the Robot Masters seem to get squashed pretty quickly with no time for their characters to get any personality (outside of Cutman). Will this be addressed in future stories?

Paul – Well, the comic isn’t called “Robot Masters” it’s called Mega Man so he’s the main thing we’re focused on. The Robot Masters are not going away. They’ll be back and back and back as part of the regular cast. I’ve read alot abut the complaints about them being taken out too easily. They are part of Mega Man’s evolution as a character. Wily’s the real bad guy. He won’t be gone for long either. In hindsight, maybe we took them out too fast, but we needed to get through the book to establish the first story. I think in the graphic novel, it won’t seem so fast and it will seem like a very coherent tale.

What will we see from Mega Man in the future?

Paul – An integration of original stuff to a limited degree with faithful adaptions of the other games. Different artists. All stories done in a 4-issue arc Sonic Universe style.

So we can expect to see his robo dog Rush next year?

Paul – Yes. I saw the preliminaries of his design. but we work pretty far in advance. I’m pretty excited myself. I’ve seen the finished pencils from the next arc and it looks great.

Going onto Cosmo the Merry Martian. Can you tell us what this title is all about?

Paul – Cosmo is still something we’re working out. we don’t have a set date for him yet. He’s an old character from the 50’s and 60’s. He’s pretty much Spongebob in space. It’s Ian’s opportunity to run wild.

Speaking of poor Ian, he’s got a lot on his plate now. What with four titles to work on. Is there any chance for a not-so-young up and comer with a popular webcomic that Yardley’s worked on to have a shot at one of the titles to ease his burden? (Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink)

Paul – (Laughter) Is that a pitch? You’ll see some changes in the writing lineup in the future. Tracy will be writing the Babylon arc after Scourge is done. We have two other writers coming in to do backup stories, so you’ll see a little switch up here and there. Ian’s still the brain trust. He and I get together to workout the storylines for years to come.

Since Sonic Generations and Sega had such a strong precense at the con this year, I thought I’d check and see how many Sonic fans I could find. Classic Metal Sonic Revealed

 

 

Today on Facebook and Twitter, Sega revealed an HD rendering of classic Metal Sonic as he will look in the upcoming game “Sonic Generations”. Metal Sonic returns as a classic boss that Sonic will face in the game. Ah, but which Sonic will face him? That is still unknown. Outside of the image, no other details have been posted.

Here’s classic Metal Sonic in full HD glory. “Strange, isn’t it?” Errr…..not really.

Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing Now Available on iOS Systems

Just in time for for Sonic’s 20th B-Day comes a port of Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing to the iOS family of hardware. This includes iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. It seems to be a closer port of the console version rather than the DS. Hopefully, this is the final port until SASASR 2 comes out. This thing’s been on every system imaginable and even to the arcades!

The best news out of this is an introductory price of $1.99 U.S., ~1.19 Europe! (I don’t know how to make that European $ key on my keyboard. Whaddya want from me? I’m a Yankee!) Make sure you have a newer model of iPhone/iPod as the framerate can get a bit choppy on older systems.
