G-Fuel has been doing…a lot with their Sonic partnership, and thankfully their latest product at least isn’t chili dog flavored. This new flavor is called “Party Punch.” Aside from being adorned in 30th anniversary imagery, and probably being punch flavored, we don’t know much else about this.
If you absolutely can’t wait for this new flavor, there is a waitlist you can join.

Did you know that Sonic the Hedgehog technically has TWO anniversaries? That’s right – even though SEGA’s blue blur first landed on the Mega Drive and Genesis on June 23rd, 1991, that was only in Europe and North America. In Japan, the original Mega Drive release of Sonic the Hedgehog was a month later, on July 26. That makes today Sonic’s official 30th Anniversary in his creators’ homeland!

If you caught the Sonic 30th Anniversary Symphony, there was a special announcement during the intermission where Masato Nakamura of Dreams Come True announced a new single of the Green Hill Zone theme. This version will feature lyrics and vocals from Miwa Yoshida. No formats, platforms, or date were announced.
However, you may have already heard a bit of this single already if you caught a Japanese tea commercial last month. The version announced today will most likely be a full version of this commercial’s jingle. So grab a green tea, and keep an ear out for when the full song drops!

Everybody has their favourite Sonic game, but today – on the blue blur’s birthday – it’s without question that the focus should be on the original Mega Drive/Genesis title that started it all. And to celebrate Sonic’s 30th Anniversary, an inspired product designer came close to convincing SEGA to re-produce a special edition of Sonic 1 that would play on original 1990s hardware.

As if everything announced for Sonic’s big 3-0 already wasn’t enough, IDW have released the preview for the special one-off issue celebrating the Blue Blur’s birthday!
This special packs three stories in its pages! First up is the tried and true Chaos Emerald hunt in “Seasons of Chaos”; when the Chaos Emeralds suddenly crop up in random places, it’s up to Sonic, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, Mighty and Ray to gather them all up before the bad guys can get a hold of them. But this is an anniversary special, so you know it won’t be just Eggman and Metal Sonic’s faces they run into!
Speaking of whom, the second story turns the spotlight onto the old man himself, since it’s also his birthday! But how does a despicable man like Eggman celebrate his birthday? His Badniks may be the only ones with the answer to that! This is “Dr Eggman’s Birthday”, written by The Babysitters Club author Gale Galligan.
And finally, the third story…is being kept secret for the preview! We know it’s being written by the McElroy Brothers, but you’ll have to read the comic to find out what goes on. Let’s hope it doesn’t drive you up the wall!
(W) Ian Flynn, Gale Galligan, Griffin McElroy, Justin McElroy, Travis McElroy (A) Aaron Hammerstrom, Reggie Graham, Mauro FoNSEca, Thomas Rothlisberger After 30 years of going fast, it’s time for fans to celebrate the speediest hedgehog of all time! First, in “Seasons of Chaos” by longtime Sonic scribe Ian Flynn and artists Aaron Hammerstrom & Reggie Graham, Sonic goes on an adventure from pleasant spring valleys to wintry wonderlands in search of the Chaos Emeralds. But Sonic’s not alone, with a little help from his friends Miles “Tails” Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, Mighty the Armadillo, and Ray the Flying Squirrel, they’ll race, fight, and fly their way to victory against the baddest of baddies! Then, in “Dr. Eggman’s Birthday”, the vile, villainous Dr. Eggman takes center stage in a story written by New York Times bestseller Gale Galligan (The Babysitters Club)! And how does the bad doctor celebrate the occasion? Only his Badniks know for sure… Finally, in “TITLE TBD”, XXXXXXXX! With Sonic’s 30th Anniversary in tow, we wanted to look back on some of the more memorable and Influential moments (or arcs) in the games’ stories. Thirty years. SEGA’s plucky blue hedgehog has been running for three whole decades. For some of us 1990s kids who grew up playing the original game on Mega Drive/Genesis, it seems absolutely crazy to think that not only would we still be playing Sonic games, but that the SEGA mascot’s popularity is stronger than ever in 2021. For those that grew up in the 2000s, the fact that Sonic Adventure 2 released twenty years ago may make you feel similarly ancient.

While this new information doesn’t bring to light any further detail regarding the new title, it does reinforce that this game is set to be the next major title in the Sonic series.

News is great, ain’t it? We‘ve got a lot of that today. As the headline says: IDW has something “big” to reveal early next month. The reveal came via a tweet, in response to Sonic trending in the aftermath of the announcement of Thursday’s Sonic Central event.
Given the company already regularly does Sonic mini series, Sonic annuals, and has already revealed their upcoming Free Comic Book Day and Sonic 30th Anniversary issues…something “big” would probably need to be something beyond all that.
Given how scant the news is, I’ll venture to speculate…that something “big” would likely be a new monthly series, or a new mini series/limited series that goes beyond the scope of the previous mini series. I hesitate to speculate much further than that, lest I get people’s hopes up, but I would personally love to see them revisit previous Sonic comic continuities, though I certainly wouldn’t bet on this.
Early June is less than a week away, so we’ll know soon enough.

It sounds like the long wait for the next Sonic game announcement may soon be over, if a statement by SEGA Chief Strategy Officer Shuji Utsumi is any indication. In a recent interview with Famitsu Magazine, he talked about SEGA and its upcoming software limit. On the subject of Sonic, he said the new an announcement for a new game “might be coming soon.” Noncommittal language aside, there are a few reasons to expect it will happen soon, since both E3 and Sonic’s anniversary are next month month, and Sonic Colors Ultimate was leaked roughly a month ago now.
In that same interview, Utsumi also commented on people pointing out that SEGA was releasing more mobile games then console games. According to him, the company has been going through an organizational shift, and that there will be more console games starting from 2022 onwards.
It’s been a long while since the last Sonic console game, Team Sonic Racing, was announced. It’s been even longer since the last console Sonic game was released. Whether its with a Sonic Colors remake, or something else, that appears likely to end soon. What are you hoping for this year? Let us know in the comments!

E3’s Twitter account finally confirmed a bunch of companies for their digital event, including SEGA. As things stand, we currently know nothing about SEGA’s E3 presence, but their presence does mean they should have something to show from one of their many franchises. Will it be Sonic? Who knows. But that’s at least a possibility now. It should be noted that SEGA’s presence is never a sure thing: they skipped E3 2015.
As usual, we should be on hand to cover it. We’ve qualified as press for every E3 since 2010, so assuming that streak holds, you can tune into us for whatever digital press-only coverage E3 will be providing this year.
