Happy Birthday Sonic Stadium, and congratulations on making it into your teenage years! Hopefully the Sonic Stadium will continue to be as exciting a place as it has been for the last thirteen years, and hopefully there won’t be too many mood swings or spots as the site hits puberty (but plenty of dates with other sites!) .
It doesn’t seem like five minutes since I joined the staff here and wrote my first article on Sonic Rush Adventure; that was six-and-a-half years ago now, meaning I’ve been writing for TSS for half its lifetime…doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun?
To celebrate, we are launching a new monthly front page feature at TSS, the Sonic Stadium Mailbox! The mailbox is a podium for you guys, the Sonic Stadium readers, to have your say, to show off your skills, or to write to us about anything Sonical for that matter! If you have an opinion on the most recent Sonic title, a funny story you want to share, a question to ask us or if you simply want to show off a bit of art you’ve made, you can now send it in to us!
Each month we will publish the best letters, pictures and messages on the front page; we will also pick a star letter each month, which will receive a snazzy prize and the envy of your peers. This month, the writer of our favourite letter will receive a shiny new SEGA Prize Europe Sonic plush for their efforts!
You can send all your mail to our new email address, mailbox@sonicstadium.org.
From all of us here at the Sonic Stadium, thank you all for your support over the years, whether you’ve been a regular visitor, a member of the SSMB, a follower of the Sonic Show or an attendee at Summer of Sonic…it’s been one heck of a ride so far, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for the future!
Stay ICE (but not too ice…winter is coming!)

The age old debate of Michael Jackson’s involvement in the production of the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 soundtrack is nothing new; in fact, it’s something that has been fairly well documented, prominently by the Sonic community, over the last decade. In recent years however, those who were actually involved in the 1993 title have come forward to offer their version of events on the matter. Twenty years ago, many veteran fans amongst the community will probably remember racing to their local newsagents in order to grab the first issue of Sonic the Comic for the paltry price of 95 pence, and thumbing excitedly through the first pages of Sonic and SEGA-themed strips. In the many years that followed, fans saw the publication of 223 issues, 9 poster magazines and several special one-offs across nearly a decade of production.
The comic was renowned for its well-pitched storylines that appealed to both the younger and older audiences, for expanding the Sonic universe beyond the canon of the game and introducing several original characters; some of whom suffered a grisly demise (poor old Johnny Lightfoot!). For the majority of issues, the comic was presented by Megadroid, a robot reminiscent of a SEGA Megadrive (and later a SEGA Saturn), who took to naming the readers “Boomers” (and the writers “Humes” – short for “Humans”). As well as the Sonic-themed strips, the comic included a whole host of stories from SEGA titles such as Golden Axe, Decap Attack and Streets of Rage, as well as features and reviews on games, as well as fan art and mail; many fan-works featured were created by many of those who have remained fans to this day! Indeed, the publication garnered many fans, and some of you reading this today will probably owe STC as your introduction to the world of Sonic the Hedgehog.

RadioSEGA’s fundraising marathon “SEGATHON” will take place this weekend, in aid of Cancer Research UK.
SEGATHON returns for the second time since it was first held back in November 2011, raising nearly £750 for BBC’s Children in Need campaign. RadioSEGA DJ Gavvie will once again host the day-long event, and will be joined guest co-hosts from across the Sonic & SEGA community across the course of the event. SEGATHON will also be holding a raffle giveaway during the show, which can be entered by donating £5 to the fundraiser (with the prizelist to be announced soon).
The show will kick off on Saturday 4th of May at 10pm BST.
Further details can be found on the RadioSEGA Website. If you’d like to donate a prize or want to be a guest co-host, you can contact Gavvie by either Twitter (@GavvieUK) or email (ps2_dc[AT]hotmail[DOT]com).

Chances are if you’ve kept your finger on the pulse of the Sonic community over the past half decade, you’ll have encountered this character – SEGA’s Digital Brand Manager, Ken Balough. Ken is probably best known for being one of the most prominent spokespeople representing SEGA during the promotion of both Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episodes 1 and 2, for trailblazing fan engagement with the SEGA Community team, as well as his mean sense of humour.
Yesterday, Ken announced in a statement on the SEGA forums that he would be leaving his position at SEGA to join the team at Sony Playstation.

Following close in the wake of Sonic Jump, Sonic Dash seems like an obvious choice in format for a portable Sonic game; an endless runner for a hedgehog who is reknowned for running. On this basis, Sonic Dash can be forgiven for being a near carbon-copy of the popular Temple Run… in fact it is slightly surprising SEGA hadn’t thought of this idea earlier! After many years of anticipation, the Sonic Fan Film has been completed and is now available to watch online. The 20-minute live-action picture, written and directed by Eddie LeBron and released through Blue Core Studios has garnered much attention, in part as it sees Jaleel White voice Sonic the Hedgehog once more (for those who have been living under a rock, White voiced Sonic in The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and SatAM back in the 90s).
In the 24 hours since its release, the film has already racked up an ultra-impressive 200,000 views on youtube – if you haven’t checked it out yet, watch it above and see what all of the fuss is about.

Selecting characters for Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing: Transformed has been no easy task for the SUMO Digital team, with many fans voicing their opinions as to which SEGA characters they want to see included in the roster.
A few days ago, Steve Lycett of SUMO Digital (otherwise known as S0L on the interwebs) issued the community a challenge via the SEGA forums:
I’ll set you a challange. Without any policing from the SUMO or SEGA crew, if you can all agree on three characters by the 1st of December and prove there is sufficient interest of at least 1000 unique people *per* character, I will present the result to SEGA. I can’t promise anything will happen as a result, but since you’re starting it…
While nothing is set in stone as to what the outcome of any response will be, the community have already formed a collective and responded. T B from the SEGA forums has organised a set of petitions for the introduction of several SEGA characters as DLC for ASR:T.
Included in the list of characters you can petition for are Axel Stone from Streets of Rage, Ristar, Segata Sanshiro and Bayonetta amongst a whole host of familiar characters.
If you want to participate by adding your signature to one or more of the petitions, follow this link to the SEGA forum which outlines what is required to add your name to the cause.

A few months back we heard the tragic story of four year-old Sonic the Hedgehog fan Dylan Cecil, who tragically drowned after slipping from a jetty while on holiday this summer. The funeral, in which he was buried in a Sonic coffin, was reported on several Sonic news sites and moved many in the community.
Several community sites have been in discussion about fund raisers, and so thanks to some very kind donations from SEGA and webmasters, several very rare items of Sonic the Hedgehog merchandise are being auctioned off via eBay over the coming weeks.
Below are some of the eBay listings for items in this sale:
Sonic Generations Press Kit
15th Anniversary Sprite T-Shirt
20th Anniversary Numbered Gold Ring
All of the profits will go towards the Burnham Area Rescue Boat fund at the request of the Cecil family. Dig deep for a good cause.

UK fans waiting for the History of Sonic the Hedgehog book have finally been given an approximate release dat of early of December, according to UDON Entertainment who will be distributing the English version of the 300-page compendium.
Although this date is later than had been initially anticipated (and with confusion a few months ago as to whether the publication had been cancelled), UDON Entertainment explain via their blog that these delays were due to the quality of the translation from the French version of the book. Quoting from the blog:
The reason for the delay from the original shipping date comes entirely down to quality: we wanted to make this book the very best it could be. When we put up our initial preview pages along with the book’s announcement this summer, some fans noticed that the writing was a little bit stiff. While Pix’n Love did an amazing job with the French language edition of this book, the English translation that UDON was provided with just wasn’t the strongest it could be. We at UDON have always prided ourselves on the quality of our books, so when we realized that this book wouldn’t read as smoothly as we wanted it to, we decided to re-write all 300 pages of the English translation. That’s what the fans would want, and that’s what we wanted because we’re fans too.
The re-write by UDON Associate Editor Ash Paulsen (a Sonic super fan according to the blog) is now approved by SEGA, and should give fans looking to purchase a copy for Christmas extra assurance that this title should be a top quality production.
The blog also has a sneak preview of the first 12 pages, so if you’re in two minds you can check out what you can expect inside.

A large proportion of the Sonic fanbase were disappointed by Sonic the Hedgehog 4. In many aspects the game had mammoth boots to fill, in continuing the lineage responsible for creating the massive following Sonic commanded during the nineties. While it’s not the intention to review either game here, many parallels can be drawn in the expectations of the music as to what was expected from the games themselves.

Fancy yourself a piece of merchandise from one of the weirdest Sonic collaborations to date? The Sonic X Hello Kitty plush doll has been racing off the shelves in Tokyo being snapped up by Sonic and Hello Kitty fans alike, and like most awesome merchandise affiliated with our favourite hedgehog, western fans have to shell out big bucks to have goods imported. TSSZ News however are offering one lucky winner a chance to snag one of these plushes, with their Campaign KittyHog ’12 Contest!

While Sonic has made several TV appearances in several different cartoon incarnations ranging from good to terrible (we’ll let you decide which is which), none have been quite as intruiging as what is set to hit Japanese TV later this year.
Aoi Sekai no Chushin de (translated as “In the Centre of the Blue World”) is a manga retelling of the story of the console wars with a fantasy twist created by Anastasia Shestakova and illustrated by Crimson. While the green-light was given for the anime back in March, this information has gone mostly unnoticed on Western shores.
Anime News Network recently posted news on the upcoming broadcast:
The story re-imagines the real-life console wars as a fantasy tale — the Segua Kingdom is locked in an age-old war with the Ninterudo Empire for dominance of the land of Consume. Segua now finds itself on the defensive, but an unlikely hero has risen in the form of Gear, a boy who brags about his breakneck speed. Gear helps turn the tide of the war.
At present it looks fairly unlikely that Aoi Sekai no Chushin ne will be officially affiliated with any of the companies the story is based around, however it will probably garner the attention of both SEGA and Nintendo fans worldwide.
See how many references you can spot to SEGA and other videogame IPs in the character designs below!

Sore you couldn’t go to Summer of Sonic? Bummed out that you can’t go to Sonic Boom? Nothing can compare to being there on the day, but we hope to give two very lucky readers out there a little piece of the UK experience with our Summer of Sonic goodie bag!
We have a pair of these to give away, which include the Summer of Sonic tote bag, an Archie comic, a Summer of Sonic programme, a stick of Summer of Sonic rock, a Sonic birthday card and a code for Sonic Generations on the PC. As if that wasn’t enough, we’re throwing in one of the awesome 20th anniversary pin badges that have only been available at a few events, along with the brand new Crush 40 EP containing their three new tracks and a Crush 40 poster. What’s more; you will also receive the autographs of both Jun Senoue and Johnny Gioeli!
So what do you have to do to nab these awesome prizes? Well, all you need to do is answer these three easy-peasy questions about this year’s Summer of Sonic Event!
1) Which two SEGA characters were announced for Sonic and SEGA All Stars Racing: Transformed by Steve Lycett?
2) What are the names of the two character theme songs that were performed by Jun Senoue and guest singers during the Jam with Jun?
3) Which two of our invited guests in attendance were involved with the UK Sonic the Comic?
Send your answers to all three questions to the usual competition address at competition@sonicstadium.org along with your name. The competition will close at 5:00pm BST on Friday 20th of July, and two winners will be chosen at random out of correct entries; winners will be notified by email soon after. This competition is open worldwide, so wherever you are on the planet, feel free to enter!

[EDIT: Apparently the songs are available now! Go get them! – T]
If you really can’t wait until Sonic Boom or Summer of Sonic to get your Crush 40 fix this year, new songs from their upcoming EP are available for download.
iTunes currently has Rise Again and Sonic Youth listed for a 4th of July release (although you can download them right now), for the not-so-bank-breaking cost of 79p each. As of this moment, One of Those Days is not listed for download.
You may also be interested in the physical CD release of their Rise Again EP, which will contain Song of Hope (also available through iTunes) along with the three new songs. The CD will likely be a Japan-only release through Wavemaster Entertainment, retailing at 1,260 yen (approximately £10/$15). This is due for launch on the 1st of August, and can be ordered online through HMV Japan; anyone outside of the land of the rising sun will have to import in order to get hold of a copy.

A few weeks back we reported on several Sonic Adventure 2 items scheduled for release on the XBox Live Marketplace and a Harmonix list of future releases, both hinting at the release of the second Sonic Adventure title for download. We can now confirm that Sonic Adventure 2 will be hitting XBLA in the near future, with the game having now been listed on the Marketplace website [EDIT: Link is now dead – T].
From the details given, it looks likely that this HD version of the game will be the Sonic Adventure 2: Battle release with the listing of a “1-2 players” feature (with Chao Karate featured and the XBLA Sonic Adventure being the DX release), along with downloadable content likely to be composed of the avatar items reported earlier this month.
The current scheduled release date is the 3rd of October 2012.
At the moment there are no details as to the cost of this download – we will keep you updated as further infor becomes available.
