Funko Are Making A Sonic Pez Dispencer

There is no stopping Funko, POPs, T-Shirts, Key-Chains, more POPs, Funko is on a quest to fill your room with all manner of quirky Sonic items.

And that seems to be a continuing trend with last nights announcement dragging everyone back to the 90’s kicking and screaming.

Funko are to launch a line of PEZ dispensers based on some of their more popular licenses and you guessed it, Sonic is in the line.

If you don’t know what a PEZ dispenser is, they’re small plastic toys which dispense a small sweet that according to your mum will ruin your dinner if you eat too many.

No release details were given just yet, but watch this space as I can imagine here at the house of TSS we’ll be finding empty dispensers around the office for months.

The Sonic Totaku Figure Gets A Re-Design & New Release Date

The Totaku figure range came seemingly out of nowhere, what started with characters associated with Playstation games has slowly grown to include more third party franchises with other exclusive characters for specific systems promised in the future.

Shortly after their reveal, Think Geek began teasing that a Sonic figure would be joining the line, before it was eventually revealed at Toy Fair 2018 and had an estimated release date of around the middle of the year.

But for fans who pre-ordered the figure, there has been a long wait and silence with regards to its release. The figure has undergone numerous delays and silence with regards to its status.

But it now looks like things are happening. Twitter user Juvi Luna noticed that the official Totaku website has now updated to say that the figure will now release in September and on closer inspection it also appears to have been re-designed slightly.

Compare to the images shown at Toy Fair, there the figure does indeed seem a little different.

The paint job overall does indeed seem a bit brighter in tone and the base has also had a change in colour tone.

Fingers crossed for September 2018.

Sonic Mania Cheat Codes Discovered!

Sonic Mania Plus continues to surprise players in many ways with small references and nods. But now fans have discovered that the game also includes cheat codes! Yes actual cheat codes, remember them? We used to have them before DLC became a thing.

A series of cheat codes have been discovered which work across all versions of the game, we’re unsure if you need the full plus DLC to get these to work or if they will work on a fully patched vanilla version of Sonic Mania, so give it a try anyway.

From what we understand, they do not work on Encore mode, and some codes only work for Sonic.

To enable the codes, you need to do the following.

Enter Mania Mode and go to ‘No Save’.

You now need to enter the code for the level select.

  • PS4: Hold Square, Select No save.
  • Xbox: Hold X, Select No save.
  • Switch: Hold Y, Select No save.

You will now be at the level select.

Go to sound test and play the following sounds to enable the desired code.

  • 3 3 3 1 9 7 9 0 8 1 1 – Changes all animals into Squirrels.
  • 4 1 2 6 – All Emeralds
  • 1 9 9 2 1 1 2 4 – Infinite Continues
  • 2 0 1 8 0 6 2 3 – Force Encore Mode
  • 1 9 8 9 0 5 0 1 – Unknown
  • 2 0 1 7 0 8 1 5 – Super Sonic Flight in normal levels (Don’t need to be Super to trigger it).
  • 9 0 0 1 – Max Control For Sonic (Dropdash, Super Peel Out, Insta-Shield)
  • 0 0 0 0 6 2 1 4 – Disable Super Music

Some of these codes combine to make interesting effects, for example, if you enable Force Encore Mode and Max Control For Sonic, it’s possible to give the Super Peel Out move to Knuckles and other characters.

Try them yourself and see what happens.

Edit: The person who originally made this discovery has been revealed to be modder CodenameGamma. His Reddit thread details the discovery and includes a few additional details. You can also check out his YouTube channel which also contains a number of interesting finds and discoveries.

Team Sonic Racing Gameplay Revealed

It seems that an embargo may have lifted! A number of websites have suddenly posted lots of details about the new Sonic Racing title including our first look at gameplay!

Shacknews also had this to say…

While Sega and Sumo Digital are aiming for 15 characters, 12 players will be allowed in each race. That’s four teams of three, with each team utilizing a Speed, Technique, and Power racer. Each of these racers have their own distinct stats, vehicles, and customization options. For this demo, we got to check out Team Sonic (Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles) and Team Dark (Shadow, Rouge, and Mega), each of whom showed different stats and exchanged different banter during the race.

The race itself feels like a straightforward arcade racer. The Shacknews team got to try out a piece of the Wisp Circuit, a single standard track of three laps each. The interesting aspect of this particular track is that it featured multiple paths, with the choice to go left, right, or center. Each path felt noticeably different, with some feeling longer and more straightforward, while another one offered classic Sonic loops. It’ll be interesting to see how other, more complex race tracks will encourage the use of the item-sharing mechanic.

Kotaku also posted additional details.

Team Sonic Racing is a 12-player kart racer where racers are split up into four teams. Where kart racers typically reward players for their personal performance and own finishing position, Team Sonic Racing gives each player on a team points based on their finishing position, then adds up those points for an overall team score. Simply put, you can’t win as an individual by just being the best racer; if the team doesn’t do well, then nobody does.

Team Sonic Racing gives players a number of tools to help out their fellow racers, none of which I have really seen employed in this sort of cooperative racing game before. If you pick up an item (called Wisps) while racing around the track, but are considerably further up the pack than your teammates, you can press a button to offer that item to your team. If one of your team members accepts and takes the item, it’ll warp over to them, allowing them to catch up more easily (and hopefully knock a few people off your own tail). If you’re the player falling behind, you can use that same button to request items from your team, and any players with an item available have the option to pass theirs over. By passing items between your team, hitting enemy racers with items, or pulling off collaborative racing moves like slipstream boosts, you can slowly build up a team energy meter too which, when full, can be activated to give every racer on your team a short but substantial speed boost.

We’ll update you with more details as we get them.

Sonic Mania Plus Leaked On PS4!

Out of respect for the developers, we will not be posting major details regarding the spoilers that have been discovered from this leak.

Following reports on our forums, it would appear that Sonic Mania Plus got accidentally leaked onto the Playstation Network just over an hour ago.

It seems that someone accidentally put an update file onto the public side of the network and if you were using your PS4 at the time, had Mania installed on your system and had automatic updates turned on, the console downloaded what appears to be a new ‘test build’ of the game which includes a large portion of the Mania Plus update.

We’re going to keep the big spoilers out of this update, but reports indicate that there have been significant changes; such as the level design as well as some new transitions between the levels.

Other changes noted are quite major and from last time a lot of you requested that we don’t include spoilers unless they are very clearly marked… So if you are curious to see them, check out the topic on our forums, the spoilers start instantly when you click the link, so this is your last chance to turn back.

Sega: Huge Announcement Tomorrow

Sega’s Japanese fan event Sega Fes is set to begin this weekend and out of nowhere the US and EU Sega twitter accounts just tweeted the following.

https://twitter.com/SEGA_Europe/status/984793771870126081

Whilst this could be anything Sega related, we here at TSS have noticed a number of Japanese Social Media accounts have also been tweeting hints at Sonic themed announcements for various consumer goods all day.

This does not outright confirm that the announcement is specifically for a Sonic related item, but it does certainly suggest it might be or that Sega Fes will have a number of Sonic related announcements at the event. Furthermore, for both Sega of America and Sega Europe to tweet about this, it would have to be something major that affects the global Sega Brand. Which would suggest it’s either Sonic or Yakuza.

We’ll update this with details of said announcement and live-stream links as we get them.

The EU Sega Store Opens

After 5 months of waiting, Sega have finally opened an online store for the EU. However unlike the US store the items on the EU side are very different compared to the US counterparts.

Every single item is a customised product.

Going under the title ‘Sega By Me’ EU shoppers have the chance to purchase notebooks and mugs with the phrase ‘customise here’ written on them. So you can write your own message and have it printed on the notebook cover or the mug to personalise the item.

Whilst some people might enjoy this, some collectors might be disappointed to discover that there appears at this time to be no Sonic Mania Adventures merchandise, none of the exclusive 25th Anniversary Tails merch is on the site, in fact, nothing that’s on the current Sega Store is on here, it’s completely customised products.

We’ll let you know if this changes or if there are any developments.

Giant Sonic Statue Found In The Woods of Japan!

At the end of 2015, twitter user and bike enthusiast 250moriyuki wanted to test out his new bike around some of the more remote parts of Japan, on his journey he documented the trip and posted a number of images showcasing the sights on his adventures.

Including the following…

One of three images showing a giant Sonic statue, standing on what appears to be a snowboard held in place against two trees.

Only a handful of Sonic fans had seen this, at the time only a single blog entry showing a low quality image of it existed online which again didn’t give an exact location.

Given the lack of information and the significance of the find, many users on our forums including myself attempted to find the statue. We knew that it was in the Mie Prefecture and on the day moriyuki posted his original images, he mentioned the Soni Village, so we knew the rough area it was in.

However, despite efforts to pin point the location, that region is huge, with hundreds of roads, it was going to take a long time to find searching manually.

Since then, other images of the statue have surface, but again, no location posted.

Since August 2016, the trail had gone cold. Until last night…

SSMB user BxB-Meister posted a single image from what appears to be a google street view search showing the statue! Following a conversation with BxB, he agreed to give me the exact address of the statue on one condition.

That condition is to keep the exact location a secret for now.

The reason being is that the statue is in a very remote location and people are worried that once the location is fully revealed, the statue’s days are numbered, there is a risk of vandalism or even theft.

Until someone can go out there, and document this statue with the intention of taking high quality photographs and even video, it’s exact location should be kept secret.

Now that said, I will gladly give out the location of the statue if someone is able to go out there and document it. So here is the only hint as to where it is.

By car, it’s between 15-30min away from the Kindai University Technical College located in Nabari. So if you are capable of getting to that location, it should be very easy (even by foot) to get to the statue.

If you do happen to live in Japan can get to this area and are willing to go on an adventure, contact me via the SSMB forums and I will give you the address if you be worthy! Yup, I’m treating this exactly like a quest, because let’s be honest! This is as close to an RPG quest as we’re going to get!

So until the day comes where someone fully documents this statue, let’s hope it has many years ahead of it as it cheers on riders and other adventures!

Although, as one mystery ends, the other remains.

Just why is this statue there?

Cancelled 2007 Sonic The Hedgehog Cartoon Details Surface

As the fan base wait for the imminent release of Sonic Mania Adventures, the newest cartoon incarnation of Sonic the Hedgehog, it appears that another cartoon, pitched some 10 years ago, never saw the light of day.

According to a LinkedIn profile for TV writer Grant Moran (whose credits include Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures and Batman), a new Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon was in the works between the months of May and October 2007, some 3 years after Sonic X concluded.

We contacted Mr Moran, who was kind enough to provide a few more details about the TV series which ultimately failed to get green-lit. Simply entitled ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’, it was initially commissioned by Sega through entertainment company Phuuz Entertainment.

Although no further details could be provided, we thank Mr Moran for confirming this was indeed a TV series project, and will bring you any further updates to this story as they come to light.

And this year is looking to be just as fast for him, with the announcement of a live action/CGI movie coming next year and a new game set to be announced next month during SXSW Gaming.

Sonic Forces used to have a VR mode

About a year ago, we brought you news that Sega was experimenting with Sonic in Virtual Reality and were looking to create a VR themed roller coaster.

Well it seems that experiments with Sonic and VR were not just limited to theme park attractions. Based on files found in the PC version of Sonic Forces, it looks like there was a VR mode/demo in the game.

The Cutting Room floor discovered a single splash screen in the files for the PC version of the game. The file in question is located within “vr_stage.pac“.

This is all that appears to be left over, so for those of you hoping for footage of this mode, we’ll just have to use our imaginations on that.

Also as an interesting side note, the game really was at one point entitled ‘Sonic 2017’.

Whilst it’s possible that this is in relation to ASRT or a past racer game, it seems very unlikely that this is for a previous racing title since they’re several years old now. The fact it mentions racetrack suggests that it is in vehicles so it’s unlikely that these would be Sonic R related products.

The Sonic section begins at 8:32 and the ‘from the game’ line starts at around 9:00.

So what do you think? The rumours are certainly starting to add up now aren’t they?

Diamond Select Toys Throws Hat Into Sonic Toy Market

Diamond Select Toys have been responsible for some very well done toy lines based on pre-existing licensed products such as Ghostbusters and Marvel. Well with New York Toy Fair just a few days away they have just announced that they will be making a new line of Sonic toys.

The first products will be on display at the International Toy Fair in New York City, with a focus on the core Sonic characters — the speedy hedgehog Sonic, the energetic Amy, Tails the two-tailed flying fox, Knuckles the powerful Echidna, Shadow the anti-hero hedgehog, Metal Sonic the evil robot hedgehog, and the mustachioed mastermind Dr. Eggman. Product categories include Gallery PVC dioramas, Minimates block figures, Vinimates vinyl figures and PVC mini-figures with collect-and-connect racetracks.

I’ll let you guys decide if you want to add that racetracks bit to the racer game rumour pile.

The company goes on to say

“It’s an honor and a challenge to develop products based a world with such a long history and distinctive style,” said Diamond Select Toys president Chuck Terceira. “The Sonic Universe has so many possibilities that we are excited to explore – in our established categories, like Vinimates, Minimates and Gallery PVCs, but also the PVC mini-figure category, which we are diving into for the first time!”

So we have, diorama style figures, miniture block figures, mini figures and racer figures!

The toys are due for release around Christmas 2018, but they will apparently be on display at the New York Toy Fair which is next week.

We’ll update you as soon as we get more information.

Sonic Battle Racers Kickstarter Now Live

About a week ago we brought you news that a Sonic themed board game was in development. Well the Kickstarter for said board game is now live.

Sonic Battle Racers has two backing options at the time of writing.

  1. Pledge $10 (or more): No Reward.
  2. Pledge $100: The Base game + Kickstarter Exclusive Super Sonic playable Piece + Kickstarter Exclusive physical badnik pieces + any stretch goals.

The game itself is essentially a race, with players attempting to win against several other opponents whilst dodging badniks and other traps. Included in the game are several badnik pieces which will not be available at retail to accompany Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Eggman.

There are also promises of expansion packs to come at a later date but these are not included in the Kickstarter.

Blaze, Sticks and Shadow playable pieces are stretch goals, however only Blaze and Sticks are included in the $100 pledge, you have to purchase Shadow separately.

So what do you think? Going to back this game? Let us know in the comments.

Sonic The Hedgehog Totaku Figure Revealed

During the London Toy Fair, Think Geek revealed a new line of video-game based figures entitled ‘Totaku’, along with a report that a Sonic figure would also be joining the line at a later date. Which was supported by a silhouette outline of Sonic on the Totaku website.

Well it appears that the figure was indeed at the London Toy Fair as toy blogger Idle Hands managed to snag a few cheeky photos of it.

We can now also reveal some details and clear up some misconceptions about this figure line.

  • The figures are made by Think Geek, they are not made by Sony.
  • They are not a Sony exclusive line, Sony characters are just wave 1, Microsoft and other IP’s are joining later in the series.
  • The bases are connectable, meaning you can create your own diorama’s with multiple figures.

No release date has been confirmed yet, but keep checking TSS and we’ll post more details as and when we get them.

Toy Maker Zappies Claim New Sonic Racing Game for 2018

Over in Nuremberg, the annual Spielwarenmesse toy fair is underway and as usual the toy makers are showing off their new toys for release later this year. Well, one such toy maker has just added fuel to a fire which had been virtually extinguished earlier this week.

Zappies who were responsible for a number of All Stars Racing Transformed toys way back when the game was first release were at the convention and have allegedly told Spindash.de that there is a third Sonic racing game on the way!

Whilst there is no outright proof of such a game, what strongly supports it is that their booth is full of the original ASRT toys which went out of production years ago. They claim these are here as placeholders in a bid to give some retailers an idea as to what the new game and toys will look like.

This comes less than a week after a document from Sumo Digital was leaked which suggested a new ‘Kart Racer’ from a ‘Global IP’ was in development, and just days after Aaron Webber claimed that it wasn’t happening.

Keep checking TSS, hopefully we can get all this resolved very soon!

First4Figures Tease Modern Metal Sonic Statue

Despite reports that F4F were looking to cancel their Sonic line, it seems there might be one last gasp effort to bring life to it once more.

In a Facebook post discovered only just now, First4Figures recently asked members of their collectors club to vote on designs for a new Modern Metal Sonic Statue.

Based on the image, there are two design concepts being considered, however the poll also has options for ‘not interested in Metal Sonic’ which is currently the second most rated option!

Why did it take so long for people to notice? Might have something to do with the post going live on Christmas Day, when we’re all eating turkey and opening gifts.

New Sonic Toys For 2018

In what could be argued as being the first big reveal for 2018. Tomy has updated their re-seller catalogue for 2018 which includes a lot of brand new Sonic toys covering action figures and plushies.

With regards to action figures we have a new a classic Amy pack which comes with a metal art plate and a Classic and Modern Eggman pack which also comes with an art plate.

But more interestingly, Zavok is finally getting a figure and Infinite is also getting the action figure treatment along with some Chao accessories.

More modern based figures, but the most interesting thing on show here is the comic book packs, you see… that doesn’t appear to be an Archie or IDW comic book, but something completely new!

Terror, excitement, confusion… all in one page. On the one hand with have the awesome looking classic Sonic figure, and the utterly stunning looking Super Sonic plush…. Only to find Amy and Vector who appears to be hitch hiking.

More plush toys planned, this time we see a new Classic Eggman and an Evil Chao figure join the line! Also is it just me or is Knuckles giving Shadow a bit of a look there?

More on these as and when we get the details in.
