Comic Preview: IDW Sonic the Hedgehog #1

Time to jump down the rabbit hole yet again.

It’s been over a year since we’ve had a preview of any comics, but with IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog comic set to debut next week, a preview has been released to show a little of what this new story has to offer. Since the last battle, Eggman has been nowhere to be found, so naturally you’d think this would be a good time for Sonic to be able to chill.

Not so, as Eggman’s robot army are still on the attack! Sonic comes across one such village under siege, but he’s going to have to get a little help to beat these forces down! As Sonic and Tails do their thing, there’s something strange underneath the surface. What is up with this attack when Eggman is apparently MIA? See the action and mystery start to unfold as we take a look at the first part of the “Fallout” arc, and the first ever issue of IDW Sonic!

Giant Sonic Statue Found In The Woods of Japan!

At the end of 2015, twitter user and bike enthusiast 250moriyuki wanted to test out his new bike around some of the more remote parts of Japan, on his journey he documented the trip and posted a number of images showcasing the sights on his adventures.

Including the following…

One of three images showing a giant Sonic statue, standing on what appears to be a snowboard held in place against two trees.

Only a handful of Sonic fans had seen this, at the time only a single blog entry showing a low quality image of it existed online which again didn’t give an exact location.

Given the lack of information and the significance of the find, many users on our forums including myself attempted to find the statue. We knew that it was in the Mie Prefecture and on the day moriyuki posted his original images, he mentioned the Soni Village, so we knew the rough area it was in.

However, despite efforts to pin point the location, that region is huge, with hundreds of roads, it was going to take a long time to find searching manually.

Since then, other images of the statue have surface, but again, no location posted.

Since August 2016, the trail had gone cold. Until last night…

SSMB user BxB-Meister posted a single image from what appears to be a google street view search showing the statue! Following a conversation with BxB, he agreed to give me the exact address of the statue on one condition.

That condition is to keep the exact location a secret for now.

The reason being is that the statue is in a very remote location and people are worried that once the location is fully revealed, the statue’s days are numbered, there is a risk of vandalism or even theft.

Until someone can go out there, and document this statue with the intention of taking high quality photographs and even video, it’s exact location should be kept secret.

Now that said, I will gladly give out the location of the statue if someone is able to go out there and document it. So here is the only hint as to where it is.

By car, it’s between 15-30min away from the Kindai University Technical College located in Nabari. So if you are capable of getting to that location, it should be very easy (even by foot) to get to the statue.

If you do happen to live in Japan can get to this area and are willing to go on an adventure, contact me via the SSMB forums and I will give you the address if you be worthy! Yup, I’m treating this exactly like a quest, because let’s be honest! This is as close to an RPG quest as we’re going to get!

So until the day comes where someone fully documents this statue, let’s hope it has many years ahead of it as it cheers on riders and other adventures!

Although, as one mystery ends, the other remains.

Just why is this statue there?

TSS Review: Sonic The Hedgehog #1 (IDW)

The old phrase “The more things change, the more they stay the same” has never been more true when it comes to the return of Sonic in comics in IDW’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” #1. After being gone from comic shelves for over a year thanks to a fallout between Sega and Archie, Sonic’s found a new home with IDW. But the creative team has not left. Cancelled 2007 Sonic The Hedgehog Cartoon Details Surface

As the fan base wait for the imminent release of Sonic Mania Adventures, the newest cartoon incarnation of Sonic the Hedgehog, it appears that another cartoon, pitched some 10 years ago, never saw the light of day.

According to a LinkedIn profile for TV writer Grant Moran (whose credits include Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures and Batman), a new Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon was in the works between the months of May and October 2007, some 3 years after Sonic X concluded.

We contacted Mr Moran, who was kind enough to provide a few more details about the TV series which ultimately failed to get green-lit. Simply entitled ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’, it was initially commissioned by Sega through entertainment company Phuuz Entertainment.

Although no further details could be provided, we thank Mr Moran for confirming this was indeed a TV series project, and will bring you any further updates to this story as they come to light.

Walking around Wondercon today, I came across quite a few interesting things. Update: Leaked TV Spot Shows Sonic in Spielberg’s “Ready Player One”

First Litwak’s Arcade, now The Oasis?

It won’t be long before Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, based on Ernest Cline’s 2011 novel of the same name, premieres in theatres. In a dystopian near-future ruined by the evils of pollution, political corruption, and climate change, a despondent mankind turns to a worldwide network of virtual reality for work, education, and entertainment.

The fantasy online world features a number of pop culture cameos so extremely high it would make more modest product placement advertisers blush, featuring the likes of Tracer from Overwatch with her signature salute to the towering figure of The Iron Giant‘s titular character. Additionally, it looks like SEGA has gotten our favourite Blue Blur in on the action as well, as Sonic the Hedgehog himself has been spotted by eagle-eyed fans in a leaked commercial for Ready Player One.

Nintendo Removes Wii Points Purchasing for Wii Shop Channel on March 26

Last year, Nintendo has announced that they will be closing the doors of the Wii Shop Channel for the original Wii indefinitely on January 30, 2019. The change comes as the company has moved on to online networks for the 3DS and Switch, and so, after more than twelve years of activity, the Wii Shop Channel and all its services (Wii Virtual Console, WiiWare, and Wii System Transfer Tool) will go offline at the cut-off date early next year.

GaMetal Unleashes a Double Whammy of Sonic Boss Theme Covers

Among the bevy of VGM cover artists I follow on the web, one standout artist in particular shines with his rock/metal arrangements of classic gaming themes in the form of “GaMetal.”

Week by week, Jonny Atma wows the scene with all sorts of fantastic VGM covers featuring his trademark solos, covering nearly every song under the sun from the popular to the obscure, and fan-favourites from the Sonic series is no exception. While he has covered a handful of tracks from the franchise in the past, Atma wrapped up the month of February with not just one, but two remixes of some of the best boss tracks Sonic the Hedgehog has to offer.
