Sega: Sonic Will be Reinforced to Generate Stable Profits

I have decided to post this as a separate update because being a Sonic fansite I know the vast majority of people are instantly going to think ‘how does this affect Sonic.’ I am not one of those people since in a situation like this you have to look at the whole picture and not part of it. But for the sake of those people here you are. Continue reading Sega: Sonic Will be Reinforced to Generate Stable Profits

sega networks logo

The Sonic Stadium has discovered that ex-Sonic Team environment artist Hiroshi Nishiyama is now employed at SEGA Networks. Nishiyama put in 4 years at Sonic Team Japan initially working on NiGHTS into Dreams and Sonic Adventure among others before moving on to Sonic Team U.S.A for nearly 9 years. At Sonic Team U.S.A he designed environments for Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog and NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams.

Since leaving SEGA, Nishiyama has been employed with Namco Bandai Games and GREE and as of September 2014 he has now returned to SEGA at their mobile gaming division SEGA Networks. Could he be working on the recently announced Sonic Runners coming from Sonic Team and SEGA Networks?

Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax is Coming to the west *It has a Sonic stage in it*

Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax

Way back in August of last year, we brought you news that Sega’s Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax would feature a Sonic themed stage. One year on I’m amazed to say that Sega are in fact now going to localise the game for western audiences!

Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax — Announcement Trailer | PS3, Vita

Announced on the Playstation youtube channel just a few moments ago. Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax is due to be released on the PS3 and Vita in the summer of this year.

Yes the Sonic stage is playable. So if you fancied this game for your collection, no need to import now. Since the impossible appears to be happening today, can we please get a trophy patch for Valkyria Chronicles now?

New Sonic Toys Spotted At London Toy Fair

UK Toy Fair 2015 TOMY Sonic the Hedgehog 016

Last week was London Toy Fair and with Tomy in attendance there was a lot of speculation as to if they would have the Sonic Boom toys, as well as ‘what toys would they bring?’ London Toy Fair is the place for toy makers to show off their products to retailers and perspective buyers for 2015. So with the toyline out in America, would Tomy bring the whole line over? Or just the best sellers?

With many merch collectors in the UK waiting to see, this is quite important news… well… they brought the lot over, including some new lines.

It looks like Tomy are willing to sell the entire line to potential retailers, this is very good news for collectors and fans of merchandise here in the UK. However if the whole line will make it to retailers remains to be seen. However more interesting are the new toys we’ve spotted including one very cool addition, what appears to be wearable power shoes!

UK Toy Fair 2015 TOMY Sonic the Hedgehog 029

Now this is obviously just a concept image, but the fact it’s on show suggests it is in development, don’t forget, Jazwares also had temporary boxes on display for their toys at these events, many of which did see a release.

Of the new toys on show, we spotted the following.

  • Sonic Power Sneakers.
  • Sonic Saves the Day pack – includes crystals and 3 figures (sonic, Tails & Eggman).
  • Sonic with a hover board.
  • A new mini plush with a grip.
  • Tails & Sticks wearing commando/camo paint.

There might also be a new Knuckles figure as well as a new sized figure but I’m unsure on that one.

No release dates yet for the toys either in America or the UK, but it looks like the toys are on their way to EU shores.

Worlds Collide Available As Part of Humble Archie Comics Bundle

Sonic’s charity is on show once again, this time for the comic industry.

76f3c7428666719599f18bdddfe74fd93cca9572

For those who don’t know what Humble Bundle is, it’s an initiative where companies offer packages of digital content as a pay-what-you-want model for a limited time, often with the aim of supporting charities of their choosing. Archie Comics have thrown their hat into the ring with the Humble Archie Comics Bundle, which includes content from the Sonic the Hedgehog line of comics in the form of (presumably digital versions of) the Worlds Collide trade paperback graphic novels.

  • Pay anything you want and you’ll get Worlds Collide Volume 1 along with other Archie books in the bracket.
  • Pay over the average (which is $7.76 as of writing) and you’ll get Worlds Collide Volume 2 along with other Archie books in the bracket and the previous selection.
  • Pay $15 or over and you’ll get Worlds Collide Volume 3 along with other Archie books in the bracket and both previous selections (provided the average isn’t over $15, which is unlikely).
  • There’s more comics to come during the time the bundle is available too, there might be even more Sonic content up for grabs along the line.

Archie Comics are putting all proceedings towards two charities; the Comic Book Legal Defence Fund and Hero Initiative. As of writing, there are just under 12 days left to get involved and buy a bundle. So if you want to catch up on the crossover, want a way of reading it on the go, or just want to grab it to support the cause, now is a great opportunity to do so!

2nd Update: Shadow is actually an Android in Sonic Boom? What..?

UPDATE 2: Paraxade who has been going through the files of the game has uncovered audio from the Western version of the game which reveals that an explanation for Shadows out of character behaviour was included, but was cut from the final release.

One clip is of tails saying “Something’s wrong, he has some sort of chip on his head”
The second is of tails saying “You’re not yourself, you have some sort of device on your head”

So it looks like Shadow was to have a more obvious ‘mind controlled’ back story to him, but it got cut from the final version, yet in Sonic Toon they brought part of it back in.

UPDATE: More video and reports are coming in.

It turns out that at the very end of the game the is a sort of explanation. Shadow is not a robot. He had his mind controlled by Lyric. That’s why his voice sounds really strange. Some translation of his ingame dialogue has also come to light which suggests he says that “He will do anything to help Lyric.”

Whilst this would explain why Shadow is so out of character, it still creates  plot hole in that there is nothing to show that this had actually happened since the western version of the game offers no explanation for his actions at all.

Original Story: Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric has been out for a while in the west. However in Japan the game is just released and there’s a rather noticeable difference… Shadow… is an android!

http://youtu.be/He4xWOVu1dw

Youtube user RaqibMarvelous uploaded a video showing the boss fight between Sonic & Shadow including the cut scenes which are done by the Japanese voice cast… and Shadow sounds nothing like he has done in previous games… he’s a robot.

Shadow has this mechanical like filter to all his dialogue like all the other robot characters making him sound more like an android. To compare, here is the Japanese version of Sonic Generations, Shadow pops up at 13:10 and you can hear the difference.

http://youtu.be/-dZs26bpwHg

There appears to be some dialogue changes too which don’t match up with the subtitles, if anyone can translate the dialogue for us we’d really appreciate it.

This is why The Sonic Boom patch is so huge…

SSMB member Paraxade managed to extract a bunch of information from the new Rise of Lyric patch and was able to post a bunch of previously unnoticed changes including some information which explains why the patch is so large as well as provide a video showing before and after patch.

The details are as follows.

  1. The cutscene where Lyric takes control of Metal Sonic has been updated with different lighting effects. Strangely enough this is the only updated cutscene.
  2.  The controller diagrams in the pause menu have been updated with some slightly different colouration; for instance, blue rings around the home menu.
  3. Six levels have changes to them: Cliff’s Excavation Site, Bygone Island, Tomb of Lyric, Lyric’s Weapons Factory (past), Crater Lake, and the Ocean Purification Plant. FWIW, each level is stored in a single massive .stream file, which means any changes to the level necessitates including an entire new .stream file for that level in the patch data. The new .streams for these six levels adds up to over 1GB; that’s why the patch is so big. I don’t know specifically what they changed in those levels.
  4.  New executable file; this is where all the hardcoded bugfixes are.

Now if you don’t spot the problem. This is why the Sonic Boom patch is so big and it also highlights just how bad the game is on a technical level.

Here’s the explanation. Collisions and other data are stored in a giant stream files meaning if you make 1 change to the entire level, your patch has to include ALL data from that original file including the changes.

For instance, say you had a stream file which was 200MB. And you wanted to add 1 ring to that stage. Your patch would be 200MB + the data for that one ring.

The changes are not that big, but due to the way the game is programmed, entire files which do not have any changes in them have to be included in the patch or else the patch will fail.

This means that any future patch is likely to be massive, even if all it did was make one single change to a stage.

As well as the details he also provided a video showing how different one cutscene now looks. (See above)

First 4 Figures Modern Super Sonic Statue Announced

At Saturdays Weston Super Sonic convention, First 4 Figures dropped one heck of a surprise. Sitting in the corner of the room was a display case with a black sheet covering a mystery object. When the announcement came a wave of ‘Oh god, I want one’ seemed to echo around the room.

Joining their Modern Sonic the Hedgehog range is Super Sonic, and oh boy this is a very impressive piece.

The scene depicts the climax from Sonic Adventure in which Super Sonic faces off against perfect Chaos. The base is a flooded station square, around the base are details of water pipes and underneath the flood waters you can just make out details of the road. Super Sonic himself appears to be flying into the scene.

This version was the exclusive variant which includes some lighting features and these are very impressive. The lighting seems to follow Sonic further giving the impression of movement. However it has an added effect. The lighting shines through the water which emits a green/blue water effect onto Super Sonic’s entire body.

The effect looks amazingly cool when viewed in a darkened environment.

The statue is currently in the prototype stage so parts of it will change. The rep told me that one confirmed change will be his spikes, but these are minor details to make them appear individual as opposed to being congealed.

No price details were given, however pre-orders will open some time in 2015.

We’ll let you know when more details are revealed.

Chikao Ohtsuka, JP voice of Eggman, has passed away at 85

EggmanWe are very sad to report that Chikao Ohtsuka, the Japanese voice of Dr. Eggman since Sonic Adventure, first released in Japan in 1998 has passed away at the age of 85 due a Ischemic Heart Disorder.

Chikao Ohtsuka is now the third known voice actor to play as Dr. Eggman to have passed away, after Deem Bristow (English voice from Sonic Adventure to Sonic Advance 3) and Long John Baldry (English voice in the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog TV show).

It remains to be seen who will become his successor as Eggman in the Japanese version of the series.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. Rest in Peace Chikao Ohtsuka. :(

Jazwares: End of the Road for The Sonic Line?

Jazwares logo

After what seems to have been a long time coming, TSS has learned of another strong reason to suggest that Jazwares has ceased producing items for the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

In a recent Email between merch-seller Ogilvie on the SSMB, his distributor of Jazwares merchandise has said that the company will no longer be carrying Sonic the Hedgehog Merchandise.

Following the news that the Sonic the Hedgehog section of Jazwares’ website seemed to have vanished not long ago, it’s yet another strong reason to believe that the once very active line of toys has come to an end.

Jazwares has been producing Sonic merchandise (primarily articulated action figures) from as early as 2009 when they produced their 10 inch now-sought-after Metal Sonic figure, so after a near 5 year run, it finally looks to be over.

Were you a fan of the Jazwares Sonic the Hedgehog figures? Got any favourites? Let us know!

Props to Ogilvie on SSMB for this information.

Weston Super Sonic: One Week to go and Info Round Up

Weston Super Sonic 2015

Weston Super Sonic, the South West’s Sonic Convention is only a week away on the 17th, and in the past few months, a plethora of details have been revealed about guests and what kinds of things Sonic fans can do at the event.

Attendance: Can I still get tickets? Can I pay ‘On the Door’?

The answer to both of these questions is unfortunately not. The convention completely sold out of both premium and free tickets towards the end of last year, and as a result cannot accept any further registrations to attend. There are also no on the door tickets, so it may be worth saving yourself a journey if you haven’t already gotten tickets. Thankfully, the awesome peeps at The Sonic Show will be live streaming directly from the convention space so you can see all the action as it takes place.

I’ve got tickets! Where do I go?

TSS REVIEW: Sonic Boom Comic Issues 1 and 2

This panel has both a flying Knuckles and Sticks REALLY liking Tails hand. I think Evan is secretly trying to ship them.

This panel has both a flying Knuckles and Sticks REALLY liking Tails hand. I think Evan is secretly trying to ship them.

From a writing standpoint, the Sonic Boom series of games, comics and cartoons seems to be at odds with one another on how to exactly interpret the characters. In the games, Amy is a athletic, smart leader while in the cartoon in much more of a den mother of the group who is much more ladylike and loving. Sticks is over the top crazy in the 3DS game while a bit more subdued in the cartoons. Knuckles comes off as very dumb in all media, but shows more confidence in himself in the Wii U game while being more silly and fun loving in the cartoon. The thing is, both the game and the cartoon were being done almost simultaneously with each other, so while they had a game plan of how the characters would act, there were a lot of nuances that were still different from one another. Basically, they had an IDEA of how each character would be, but it was never exact so we didn’t get a perfect interpretation across the board.

This is a blatant lie!

This is a blatant lie!

This brings us to the first two Sonic Boom issues by Ian Flynn. It’s my belief that Ian Flynn may not have gotten enough material from both Big Red Button or OuiDo! studios to get a proper interpretation of the characters. That the only explanation I can think of as to how Ian managed to make the worst, most mean grammar Nazi version of Amy Rose ever. With that, let’s look at the first two issues of Sonic Boom “Getting a little Boulder” and “Knuckleduster” (BTW, why is the first issue “part one of one” when it ties directly into the next issue and ends on a cliffhanger?).

STORY SYNOPSIS

Issue one starts off Sonic and the gang fighting off one of Eggman’s giant mechs. With the exception of Sticks, each character gets a little indtroduction (along with an old-school logo name) and we get to see a sample of them in action. The mech is taken down and they head back to their village area where Sticks (who is also introduced via logo in a joke that gets old by the second issue) informs them that Tails house has been robbed. Not part of his house, the ENTIRE house as it was uprooted and picked up by a giant cyborg rock golem. The rest of the issue comprises of some jokes between the cast and basically Amy insulting Knuckles for no good reason other than he’s dumb and has trouble following directions.

Dang girl, that's just mean!

Dang girl, that’s just mean!

You see, Knuckles isn’t too bright. Something they are fully aware of, but instead of Amy treating him with kid gloves when he doesn’t understand something and asks a ton of questions, she insults and berates him. I know it’s done to provide character conflict to resolve in the next issue, but all it does is make Knuckles look like a HUGE idiot who can’t understand the most basic of things and worse, make Amy look like a horrible Sally Acorn wannabe with a total lack of patience. It’s the worst interpretation I’ve seen of her character and I really don’t care for it.

He didn't actually say that, but I'm sure he was thinking it.

He didn’t actually say that, but I’m sure he was thinking it.

Before I leave issue one though, I have one last note. What’s REALLY up with the Golem? Everyone assumes it was a giant Eggman robot, however….

A.) The Golem took Tails house at the same time everyone was fighting Eggman, so he wasn’t in control of the robot unless it was programmed to go off on it’s own.
and…
B.) When Sonic and company destroy the Golem, it breaks off into stone pieces with no mechanics shown.
Ergo, it’s my belief that this was not one of Eggman’s monstrosities, but something else entirely. Maybe something they’ll explore in a future issue, perhaps?

Knuckles just figured out how babies are made.

Knuckles just figured out how babies are made.

Issue two improves on the humor (although the logo jokes return again), but I’m still a little sour on Amy. It begins with Sonic and the gang (sans Knuckles) attacking the same giant robot they fought at the beginning of the first issue. They start to realize this when Eggman finally launches his secret weapon..Knuckles! Knuckles captures all the heroes in small cages with the exception of Sticks who, in a hilarious moment, captures herself in a cage she happened to have with her. With the heros captured aboard the giant robot, Eggman tries to decide weather to conquer or destroy the village as he has Pork Chops thawing back home.

I gotta admit, I laughed pretty hard at this.

I gotta admit, I laughed pretty hard at this.

Inside the robot, Sonic is freaking out from being in such a tiny cage “Gotta go Fast!” while Knuckle finally reveals it was all a trick. He fooled Eggman and them. Only Amy reminds him they are still captured so he technically is working for Eggman at this point. Knuckles finally realizes this and it sends him into a sad state of depression. Knowing they can’t get out of the cages and stop Eggman without his help, Amy and Tails cheer him up only for Knuckles to go out and stop Eggman himself, stupidly leaving the others still inside the cages.

Luckily for a very panicked Sonic, Sticks frees him and the others (she never said she was LOCKED in her cage)and Sonic bounces around n a gleeful frenzy. Meanhile, Knuckles finally reveals his “cunning ploy” to Eggman and proceeds to destroy his robot single-handedly. This includes a scene of him gliding which is something this version of Knuckles can’t do. Sonic and the others burst out of the robot as Eggman barely escapes again. Amy finally gives an apology to Knuckles (she does apologize earlier, but it doesn’t feel sincere) only to realize she’s lost in hammer in another cliffhanger ending.

Look guys, it was funny at first, but now it's just overkill.

Nobody likes a grammar Nazi, Amy.

OVERALL REVIEW

As far as quality goes, I believe Sonic Boom will pick up greatly over time. The humor is definitely there (especially in the second issue) and it reminds me a bit of the old Mike Ghallager days of the original Sonic comic. Evan Stanley’s art was very expressive and fun to look at. However, as I said in the beginning of this review, it’s apparent that Ian Flynn was not given enough material from either the show or the game to get a firm grasp of the characters. His version of Boom Sonic is exactly the same as it is in the regular Sega Sonic comics rather than the straight man he is in the cartoon. Knuckles is INSULTINGLY dumb in this, even compared to the cartoon version who can’t read. He can barely bring a thought together. Not to mention the gliding. Something Boom Knuckles can’t do (looks like Ian pulled a Joe Edkin, who once had a panel of Amy flying in Sonic X). Tails and Sticks fared fairly well. Surprising with Sticks since she’s a brand new character who might be hard to nail down in terms of personality.

Then there’s Amy. I can’t exactly blame Ian for not getting this version of the character nailed down. In the cartoon, she’s level-headed and more of a peacemaker and denmother. In the games, she’s an independent adventurer, field leader and gymnast. Those are two drastically different versions of the same character. It seems Ian went with more of the game version with Amy being the field leader. However, in order to provide character conflict, they made her lack any patience and be insulting towards Knuckles who really didn’t do anything wrong outside of being dumb and confused. It makes her look mean-spirited and unlikable.

Evan Stanley's great at showing a wide range of emotions. Poor, sad Knuckles. Ya just wanna hug him.

Evan Stanley’s great at showing a wide range of emotions. Poor, sad Knuckles. Ya just wanna hug him.

Then there’s the logo jokes. It was definitely funny in the first issue, but than gets recycled in the second issue and it starts to become tiresome. If you want to have a humor comic book where the characters break the fourth wall, there’s other ways to do it than repeat the same joke over and over. Having Sonic mention Eggman almost smashing the credits was a nice touch, but I think a comic format is prime for some real fourth wall craziness. Have them climbing over panels! Have them burst through the cover only to have some of them hiding behind the back cover. Be crazy!

Okay, I’m starting to nit-pick here. Overall, Sonic Boom 1 and 2 had plenty of action and humor that really gave me some old-school vibes of the early days of the original Sonic comic. Evan Stanley’s art is also very expressive and humorous. I think once the writers get the hang of the characters, it will be a great book. Besides, I doubt they’ll be re-using the logo joke and making the characters act like jerks to each other again, right?

Sonic Boomcast Episode 6: An Awkward First Year

YouTube Preview Image

In this short episode, we look at the Sonic Boom franchise in 2014. Was it a boom or a bust? Also, Sonic Boom was a pretty big disaster as far as Sonic games go. But is it worse than Sonic ’06? We also do a quick review of the last two Boom episodes and discuss how our Christmases (Christmasi? Christmass?) went.

Jazwares Removes All Trace of Sonic Toys From Its Website… Sorta.

So about a year ago, I made a lengthy article about how it seemed like Jazwares had cancelled it’s entire 2014 Sonic toyline, I was forced to retract that a few months later when about a month later they actually released a Metal Sonic plush, and life was good.

However, it seems I might have been about 10 months early with my original article. If you go to the Jazwares website, you’ll notice that Sonic is no longer listed.

jazwares removes sonic

In fact he’s not listed at all on the main page in any categories. However, the Sonic section is still on their site if you visit the page directly, but trying to get there via the main page is no longer possible.

Should also point out, that other franchises which have been cancelled such as Mortal Kombat are also no longer displayed.

So, party over? Or oversight?

Thanks to SSMB member PatMac for the heads up.

UPDATE: Sonic 4 Episode 3 Was Planned, Then Cancelled

According to a user on the official SEGA forums, former Sonic 4 Brand Manager Ken Balough confirmed that Sonic 4 had a third episode planned, but it was cancelled. He has in the past hinted that a third episode was planned but this is the first time anyone associated with the project has come out and said that the series was to be a trilogy and that the third part was scrapped.
