New Sonic 25th Anniversary Licensing & Merchandise Details Revealed

sonic25thbanner

Sega have revealed more details regarding Sonic’s 25th anniversary, it seems that their plans might be a lot bigger than anyone first predicted. In terms of licensing, Tomy is still the ‘master toy partner’ however this will be supported by over 100 additional partners worldwide!

We can now reveal some of those partners.

  • Accutime Watch (watches)
  • Bentex Group (children and junior’s swimwear)
  • Card.com (pre-paid and bank credit cards)
  • Concept One Accessories (headwear and cold weather accessories)
  • H2W/Sunstache (novelty eyewear)
  • Komar Brands (children’s sleepwear)
  • LoungeFly (buttons and stickers)
  • Rubber Road (holiday sweaters, socks, keychains)
  • Signorelli (women and juniors apparel)
  • Toy Factory (entertainment/amusement plush)
  • Vandor (novelty drinkware)

Out of curiosity we decided to take a look at each of those companies, one of which already has a bunch of new Sonic products listed, now I don’t believe these to be 25th anniversary merchandise since they were announced back in December 2015, however Vandor’s website lists them as being ‘new’ so I’m going to show you all them here just in case they turn out to be the goods. Also it gives you a good idea as to what to expect.

SEGA Europe Appoints CPLG to Handle Sonic Licensing in Europe

CPLG Logo

SEGA Europe has appointed CPLG (Copyright Promotions Licensing Group) to handle its Sonic the Hedgehog licensing business in Europe. This deal will see the agency promoting both the Sonic Boom and Classic Sonic brands across all major European territories, utilizing the Sonic Boom TV series and by launching exciting new products.

CPLG is a big player in licensing and responsible for some major brands, like Tony Hawk, Jurassic World, Minions, Skylanders, Kiss, Sesame Street and more. No doubt it will be interesting to see what promotions and products we will see develop from this deal.

Sonic Boom Helicopters, Cakes, Calendars & Costumes announced

sonicboom

According to details posted on Global License, Sonic Boom is set to get more merchandise and it rangers from novel to delicious.

The newly announced products are as follows.

  • World Tech Toys for an array of remote-controlled helicopters;
  • Bulls I Toys for wearables such as branded dog tags and slap bands, as well as novelty items including erasers, stickers and trading cards;
  • Book and stationery publisher teNeues for 2016 wall calendars based on imagery from the “Sonic Boom” animated series;
  • Bakery Crafts for a line of cake decoration kits, cake/cupcake stands, decorative candles and edible decorations;
  • Advanced Graphics for wall decals and cardboard standees;
  • Accessory Innovations for a back-to-school range that will include backpacks, lunch totes, umbrellas and more; and
  • Rubie’s Costumes Company for Sonic Boom costumes that expand on its existing classic Sonic collection.

The Bulls I Toy merchandise is already out now, but the other stuff is new. I will be very interested if all this stuff actually comes out, typically stories like this always come out at this time of the year and very few of them see the light of day… Though the helicopters thing, that sounds cool.

Also, would you eat a Sonic Boom cake? Let us know in the comments.

UPDATE: Sonic Boom Shoes, Trading Cards, Shadow, Metal Sonic & More Spotted at Toy Fair 2015

UPDATE: More toys confirmed at the end of the article…

ORIGINAL STORY: It took a while, but we finally have some images of Tomy’s booth from the New York Toy Fair 2015.

sonicboomtomybooth

The first image was posted on Tomy’s own Facebook page and is a larger shot of the big headed plushes which we brought you news about last week. Included in the shot is an actual physical prototype of the Sonic Shoes which appeared at the Nuremberg Toy Fair in cardboard form.

There also appears to be a new much larger knuckles figure and what looks like clip on Sonic plushes and most surprisingly, what appears to be trading cards as well as a new box set which seems to include Eggman and Knuckles.

However, the second image is what you might find more interesting, we’re not sure on the source of this one, it was posted in our comments by “SpiritOfTheBlue”, so thank you for the heads up.

Sonic-Boomtomybooth

In the background you can make out more of the clip plushes, including a Knuckles themed one. However what’s more interesting is that there are what appear to be new renders of Metal Sonic & Shadow on a few display pieces, could this indicate that Shadow and Metal Sonic are to appear in the TV show at last? Or at least that they will have some merchandise made in the future? Note how Lyric has been confirmed not to appear in the show, yet Tomy have no Lyric merchandise at all, so far all their merchandise has been TV show themed, seems like a strong hint Shadow and Metal will be in there in some form.

We’ll keep you updated with more news as we get it.

Edit:

Well that didn’t take long, no sooner had I posted this but I got made aware of two new toys. One of which was staring us all in the face, if we enhance one of those images… check this out.

greeneggman

We can jut make out the figures of what appears to be Amy and Eggman, however what’s strange is… Eggman appears to be green? Odds are it’s from an upcoming episode of Boom. Until more details come out, we are all calling this figure ‘Hulk Eggman’ or ‘Gamma Eggman,’ agreed?

The second image comes from twitter user dadarocks an shows knuckles… with rocket powered shoes!

knucklesrocket-shoes

Aside from getting his game gear Sonic 2 on, odds are this is from another future episode of the show.

Finally, there are three interesting figures in the back of the photo which don’t appear to match the current Boom TV show cast, but do look a lot like some certain other characters we all know.

metalshadow

The one on the right looks a lot like Shadow, could the other two be Metal Sonic?

Edit 2:

A new video has surface giving a look inside TOMY’s Sonic Boom booth, where we can get a much closer look at some of the more ambiguous figures mentioned above along with some new ones.

Some Screengrabs:

If any more news comes to light, we’ll let you know.

Jazwares: End of the Road for The Sonic Line?

Jazwares logo

After what seems to have been a long time coming, TSS has learned of another strong reason to suggest that Jazwares has ceased producing items for the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

In a recent Email between merch-seller Ogilvie on the SSMB, his distributor of Jazwares merchandise has said that the company will no longer be carrying Sonic the Hedgehog Merchandise.

Following the news that the Sonic the Hedgehog section of Jazwares’ website seemed to have vanished not long ago, it’s yet another strong reason to believe that the once very active line of toys has come to an end.

Jazwares has been producing Sonic merchandise (primarily articulated action figures) from as early as 2009 when they produced their 10 inch now-sought-after Metal Sonic figure, so after a near 5 year run, it finally looks to be over.

Were you a fan of the Jazwares Sonic the Hedgehog figures? Got any favourites? Let us know!

Props to Ogilvie on SSMB for this information.

A Not so Little Look at: Sonic The Hedgehog 2014 Classic Style Guide

Untitled-2

Hello all! It’s Jono, here again to provide a very unique instalment of ‘A Not so Little Look at’.

Today, we’re going to be looking in depth at something that many people who know about the Sonic franchise won’t normally get to see: A style guide. In this case, a style guide to Classic style Sonic the hedgehog.

DSC07103

A style guide is a book, that is sent to merchandise companies to help them create products and packaging that will fit within the brand requirements set out by the license holder. This ring-bound style guide contains many things on how to go about creating Sonic merch; including character artwork, slogans, borders, typefaces, packaging ideas, and even a character height chart as well as a whole host of other information.

DSC07104

With so much information, the book is actually fairly weighty (about 80 pages in fact), and is certainly comprehensive. It’s really a fascinating thing to look through, and to notice all the little touches mentioned in this book seen in real-world products. Paladone certainly would have used this guide when creating their lines of Sonic gear.

DSC07096

You may also notice that this guide contains no references or images of Modern Sonic at all. This is because there is in fact a separate style guide dedicated exclusively to Modern Sonic products (which would you believe, is even more extensive than this guide!) In fact, this guide specifically requests that the Modern and Classic Sonic be kept entirely separate from each other.

Below is a complete set of scans from the book (with some blank pages omitted). Have a read!

Paladone to release a LOAD of new Sonic items!

Pixel Bricks

Paladone, a gift supplier with a whole range of different products has recently unveiled a whole slew of new Sonic the Hedgehog inspired merchandise. Several new items have been made available for pre-order courtesy of the UK based retailer Forbidden Planet International.

The range, which covers a whole host of different items include:

Those Pixel Bricks… Somebody hold me!

Out of all of these though, there is still no sign of Paladone’s Sonic themed Doodle Jump figure, initially seen a few months back. Possibly something that will be seen later? Time will have to tell on that one.

Now, my wallet is due to become substantially lighter, so if you’ll excuse me…

Sonic’s 10th Anniversary: Merchandise and Memories

A few years back, a wineglass emblazoned with the Sonic 10th Anniversary emblem cropped up for sale on eBay. While most seasoned merch-hogs were aware of the trinity of 10th anniversary items that had been offered by the Sonic Factory in 2001 (the statue, the crystal cube and the pewter ring), this was the first time most had seen this item; its authenticity and origin (along with that of the 10th anniversary lighter) has been much debated amongst Sonic collectors.

Luckily, one fan account reveals the origin of these items, and details the happenings of the “Sonic 10th Anniversary Birthday Party in Japan” which took place a day after Sonic’s 10th birthday on the 24th of June, 2001.

TSS Review: Funko’s Sonic the Hedgehog ‘Pop!’ Vinyl Figures

For 15 years, Funko have been making products based on characters from pop culture. Their range is expansive with hundreds of franchises and over a thousand different products. They’re also no stranger to the Sonic brand. A few years ago they made several Sonic toys based on their Wacky Wobblers line, so it’s not like this is the first time they’d had a go with the Sonic license.  However, it is the first time that they’ve used the Sonic license for their ‘Pop! Vinyl’ line. Now the Funko Pop range has a certain ‘style’ to it, so how do Sonic, Tails and Knuckles look after their Funko Pop transformation? Well… Continue reading TSS Review: Funko’s Sonic the Hedgehog ‘Pop!’ Vinyl Figures

Sonic the Hedgehog 2013 Product Catalogue

productguidecover

About 2 months ago, there was a Sonic product event over at Mercedes Benz world, at this event, a single photograph showed what appeared to be a Sonic product guide. Naturally fans of sonic merchandise were curious as to what it contained. But the guide didn’t ever resurface. Last week, another photograph of the guide was spotted, this time at a second event, the interesting thing about this picture was that you could just make out some products which haddn’t yet been announced. By now, Sonic merchandise fans really wanted to get ahold of it.

Well… We’ve got one. Thanks to our friends over at toybuzz.co.uk we now have a copy of the Sonic the Hedgehog 2013 product catalogue. Would you like to read it?

Keep in mind, it only shows products that will be released in the UK this year. So you won’t find the huge range of Jazwares toys that the United Stages gets, nor will you see any Japanese products. Furthermore, due to items which you can buy/pre-order here in the UK, this guide is not the full range of products. The guide does however contain some new items and awesome looking items.

Here are a few highlights.

Note: Click the images to see them at full size.

product catalogue 1

I can hear you saying ‘Oh no! Not the clothes!’ But if you recieve that jumper/sweater on the bottom right, you might be jumping for joy. That looks fantastic, I love the random patches on the back as well as the Sonic logo on the sleve. I just hope it comes in adult sizes. Due to be stocked at Next, no price/release date was given.

product catalogue 3

Nothing really new here, everything is known, however I’d like to draw your attention to the 2014 annual that we reported on a few weeks ago. You can see a sample page from it showing “Doctor Eggmans Maze.” Unfortunately it looks like it’s going to be full of random stock art which is a shame, for some reason the ‘Sonic Generations’ logo is also randomly placed on that sample page… why? But that said though, I’m really looking forward to that and will be picking it up/reviewing it on TSS later this year.

product catalogue 7

This is the one we want! Action figures! Well… it’s slightly disapointing. Whilst it’s good that the UK is finally getting the Chaotix and Blaze pack (Blaze is out now in UK Toys R Us stores by the way) a year after the US has had them, the inclusion of the 10 inch Sonic is disapointing since it’s been out for well over a year already. The plushies have been around for even longer. However the confirmation of the figures with accessories is a big welcome. Though personally I’d be much happier to see the Metal Sonic plush or some of the ASRT Jazwares toys make their way over to the UK shores.

But, the biggest suprise is from Sambro. The pinball game has been seen in a few photos for a while now, but the giant floor jigsaw is a new thing. The image is fantastic, Sonic & Tails look really good in that environment. For you older fans. Consider getting the jigsaw and putting it in a picture fram, you now have one awesome looking picture.

product catalogue 6

Everything you see on here has been out for well over a year. But the bigest suprise would be the inclusion of London Cakes. It seems that Sega has partnered with London Cakes who will make you a cake with an official Sonic image on it. Checking their website, there doesn’t appear to be any Sonic cakes up for order just yet, so this might be a service which will be added later in the year.

product catalogue 7If I’m honest… The Sonic the Hedgehog Official Merchandise store has been very disapointing. Just take a look at it right now and you’ll see a small example of what I mean. Nothing new has been added to the store for months, what ‘collectables’ that are there can be bought very easilly at other stores for much less. With the exception of one or two imported items, most of the products can be found elsewhere for much better prices. Remember that Sonic Monopoly? I was able to import that from Canada and it ended up being cheaper than had I bought it from the Sonic Merchandise UK store!

That said, this image would indicate that things might be changing. It seems that they’re going to be selling giant posters of archie comic covers. This is actually… quite a good idea, archie comics covers are usually a lot better than what you find in the pages of the comic and some of the covers are really nice looking. Giant sized on glossy paper? Thats a great idea!

In addition to this, we seem to have unique branded merchandise. It appears to be limited to coffee cups at this point and whilst they have been advertised on the Sonic Merchandise facebook page, there’s not been any sign of the items on the store. With any luck the site will be getting a relaunch or a huge boom in products. It’s a great idea but is crying out for a huge stock update.

product catalogue 2And finally, Mike Pollock if you’re out there. Eggman under pants are just under £4 from Primark.

To see the full catalogue in full, check out our gallery, these images are large scans so don’t open them at once if you have a slow connection.

Special thanks to toybuzz.co.uk for sending us the catalogue.

Mi-Christmas Open House, Featuring Sonic the Hedgehog

mipr1 The agency which Sega use to help promote Sonic as a brand here in the UK recently held a ‘christmas open house’ what is that you might ask? Well, Mi-Pr is tasked with helping Sega to promote Sonic here in the UK, their job is to showcase Sonic products to retailers and the press in order to get more orders placed at retail. So the idea behind a christmas house is to decorate a home and fill it with products so retailers and the press can see what it looks like come christmas day and entice people to order products for retail.

The event has since ended, however photos of it are coming to light, and there are one or two interesting bits of information coming out. I should point out, Sonic Lost World was also available to play too, but I cannot find any new information on it.

mirpr3

A selection of Sonic clothing/accessories, Eggman underpants confrimed. If they have those in adult sizes, I might just have to buy several pairs.

miprheadder

If you look at the bottom of the above photo, you can just make out the Sonic pinball game which has been teased every now and again.

mipr3 This photo both excites and infuriates me. Whilst it doesn’t show anything new, it does show the Sonic product catalogue, but you can’t see inside… Please, Sega, Mi-Pr, somebody, can we get a copy of this so we can actually take a look inside it and know what to spend our money on?

mipr6The above picture comes from toybuzz.co.uk. Wilst it shows no new products… it does show a Sonic themed Christmas Cake, I suspect this was made specially for the event.

In addition to the pictures, Pi-Pr also released some infromation regarding a couple of new products to be released later this year, including the prices of the products and retailers who would be stocking them.

miprdetails

The pinball game will be just under £15 and available from The Entertainer, the bike is £120 and from Argos, also a Sonic crash helmet can be purchased for £17 too.

NKOK Teases New Sonic Toys

At the start of the year, you might remember how toy maker NKOK dropped hints that they were making a new line of Sonic toys based off Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed? Well following an update to their website, we can confirm that this is indeed the case as well as one or two other suprises.

Their website not only depicts the older toys, but also has listings for several new products, unfortunately none of which had images to acompany them. However, the descriptions give you a very good idea as to what to expect.

Slot Car Racing Toys

Battery Opperated Sonic & Shadow Slot Car Race Set

Battery Opperated Sonic & Tails Slot Car Race Set. (Approximately 8 feet of track)

Hand Crank Generator Sonic & Shadow Super Loop Set (This product is based on ASRT vehicles)

Light & Sound Pullback Vehicles

Pullback ASRT Sonic.

Pullback ASRT Tails.

Pullback ASRT Shadow.

As mentioned before, no images acompany the descriptions, however, the fact that these products are on the website would suggest licensing permission has been granted. No price or release dates were given, however, typically, NKOK toys have been released worldwide.
