Whisper the Wolf on her Second Anniversary

Two years ago today, IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog #8 was released to the public. With that comic, we were introduced to Whisper the Wolf (conceptualised by Ian Flynn, designed by Evan Stanley). She’s based on the playable avatar in Sonic Forces (amongst other influences), fitting considering the comic started with the aftermath of that game. But there’s so much more to her than that.

When she debuted, she already had a reputation as a capable hero who helped others out when they needed it, hence her nickname being the “Guardian Angel”. However, she never joined any resistance team, so she also had a reputation as a lone wolf. Her personality befit this to a tee, but not in a typical manner. While she’s very focused and professional when on missions, she’s extremely shy, to the point that she usually talks in…well, a whisper. Thanks to an incident in the past which ended in her team’s death, she’s reluctant to get close to anyone lest they suffer the same fate. |Conversely, thanks to meeting Sonic and Silver on a base infiltration, she’s been steadily letting these walls down, showing that when you get to know her, she’s very kind, compassionate and cares deeply for her allies (unless you’re Shadow. There were androids in the incident). Even the wisps she uses for her multi-wispon weapon love her like a mother!

Naturally, she’s helped out the heroes since, grappling with her aversion to crowds to aid in fighting Neo Metal Sonic, helping in Tangle’s home town, fighting against Mimic with the personal baggage that came with him, and holding her own during the Metal Virus disaster (including yet more heartbreak. Don’t worry, this one got better). After this, the potential for where her story could take her is practically limitless. But even going off what we’ve got already, she’s a well-developed, sympathetic and just really cool character, so it’s no wonder she garnered so much attention so quickly.

Even though she’s only been around for a relatively short time in the Sonic universe, her impact has been massive for a comic character. She instantly became a fan favourite, both within the comic fandom and the general fandom at large. There was so much demand for more of her that a miniseries was given the greenlight, showing how Whisper came to become the hero she is today and working with Tangle to move on from her past trauma, making their recent friendship very close in the process.

But that’s not all. Whisper (and Tangle) managed to do something that very few non-game characters have managed; to actually be featured in video games! As of last month, she became playable in both Sonic Dash and Sonic Forces mobile. While these are spin-off mobile games, they give a very good foot in the door for more to be done with her. And even if nothing does become of it, it’s still an achievement for a comic character, and a testament to how beloved she is both in the fandom and within the company.

Tangle Swings into Sonic Forces Today

Less than a week after popping up in Sonic Dash, fan-favorite IDW Sonic character Tangle the Lemur has now found her way into Sonic Forces Mobile in a new week-and-half-long event, “It’s Hero Time!”

She comes to the game as a rare character, and players will need to earn 60 character cards to unlock her. These cards are earned by completing specific missions during the event, which will last from today until July 17.

Tangle brings two new power ups to the game: tail strike, a damaging short-range dash that can take up two item slots, and tail spring, which will let Tangle essentially perform a powered-up spin attack. When it comes to her stats, she scores a 7/10 in speed, 5/10 in acceleration, and 10/10 in strength.

Whisper will likely be coming to the game later this month, after Tangle’s event ends. Stay tuned to this post for Tangle gameplay footage!

Unlikely Team Ups Galore With Solicitations for IDW Sonic the Hedgehog #33 and Bad Guys #1

Back in the stride of comic news following recent circumstances, IDW have released solicitations for Sonic the Hedgehog #33 and the first issue of the new miniseries, Bad Guys #1. And there’s all sorts of strange shenanigans going on even with the Metal Virus saga over!

In Sonic the Hedgehog #33, Omega’s sustained heavy damage during the efforts to stop the Metal Virus, and his allies turn to Sonic and Tails to help out. To rebuild his body, they’re going to need to do some dealings with a Chao racing champion. As is to be expected, things certainly aren’t going to be that straight forward for our heroes! This is “Chao Races and Badnik Bases!”.

It’s also neat to note that this is the first main comic issue written by Evan Stanley, who as we reported on a while back has taken over as lead writer. With a barmy premise like this, it should be fun to see what new flavour she brings to the table.

Hold onto your chili dogs, Sonic fans! Long-time artist Evan Stanley takes over as writer with an action-packed, friendship-fueled new arc: “Chao Races and Badnik Bases!” The perfect jumping-on point for new readers! The Metal Virus is gone, but things aren’t quite back to normal. Omega is damaged and his allies turn to Tails and Sonic for help. The only way to rebuild him is to trade parts with a mysterious chanpion Chao racer… but things aren’t what they seem.

Meanwhile, in Bad Guys #1, Dr Starline wants to plot his own evil schemes, and decides that one of Eggman’s old bases would be an ideal spot to do it. But with Badniks guarding any way into it, he realises he can’t get in alone, so recruits some familiar allies to help. If you think this will be a friendly alliance, you are solely mistaken!

The mastermind behind the Metal Virus isn’t done yet. Ian Flynn returns to answer: What happened to Dr. Starline?
The Shadowy Scientist is back to his evil antics in Bad Guys! And what better place to concoct nefarious plans than one of Dr. Eggman’s abandoned bases? But that is easier said than done when badniks are guarding the entrance! Dr. Starline knows he can’t do it alone, so he decides to recruit some familiar and not so friendly faces.

Sonic the Hedgehog #33 and Bad Guys #1 look set to be released around the October-November period. As always, we’ll have more information closer to the time of release. With so many new ways the story could go now, you won’t want to miss it!

Evan Stanley takes over the Sonic comic while Ian Flynn pens “Bad Guys”

While the Sonic comic may be on hiatus due to the Coronavirus, plans for future issues are still going full steam ahead. As reported on comicbook.com, Sonic artist, Even Stanley will take over as both writer and illustrator of IDW’s Sonic The Hedgehog comic book as of issue 33. IDW Delays Sonic Comics Indefinitely, Starting in May

With major cities and countries in shutdown due to the Coronavirus, many businesses are being forced to temporarily suspend their operations. This includes comic-book distributor, Diamond Comic Distributors. They will be suspending operations starting April 1st.

In a statement from IDW president Chris Ryall, IDW will suspend May releases and “reduce its overall publishing line for products originally scheduled through July, with a focus on releasing our biggest projects in special editions to help drive traffic to stores through the summer.”

What does this mean for the Sonic comics? A report from Tails Channel has helped clear things up.

  • Issues 29 and 30 are indefinitely delayed (Future issues likely to be delayed too.)
  • Issues 27-32 and the 2020 Annual are returnable within 60 days if already ordered
  • The issue with digital releases is unclear.

The good news is this doesn’t affect issue 27 which will be out Wednesday (if your local comic store is still open or allowing pickup). The 2020 Annual and issue 28 are still due for release in April.
