TSS REVIEW: Sonic Unleashed

I found it hard to write this review. Not because I didn’t know what to say, but because I wasn’t sure how I was going to say it. Hashimoto-san and company have worked very hard on the latest Sonic adventure. It’s clear to see when you take a peek at the screenshots, or learn about the Hedgehog Engine, or hear about how they spent countless months designing Sonic stages that cover hundreds of virtual miles. Sonic Team haven’t scrimped here, they had something to prove after Sonic 06 that they can create a well-produced, non-glitchy game. And they have. Based on the effort put in, I’d give them as many Thumbs Up as humanely possible. Continue reading TSS REVIEW: Sonic Unleashed

TSS Reviews: Sonic The Hedgehog (2006)

It has arrived. After changing the formula with Sonic Heroes and getting mixed responses, the Team have gone back to basics and stuck with what works. The result is a mixture of Sonic Adventure’s town stages and level structure and Sonic Adventure 2’s involving plot lines. Now we’ve hit the next generation of consoles, does the tried and tested work in Sonic the Hedgehog? Continue reading TSS Reviews: Sonic The Hedgehog (2006)

TSS Interview: Return to the Remix Factory

UK based music production studio Remix Factory have come a long long way, but you wouldn’t think that one of the main areas they’re making waves in is the Sonic community. The studio, who are all pure Sonic fans through and through, first made an impact making two remixed tracks for Shadow the Hedgehog. Continue reading TSS Interview: Return to the Remix Factory

When Kieran Met Sega

This is the story about three men. Three men with a mission; to infiltrate SEGA Europe and retrieve what was rightfully ours. Following from TSS’ Shadow Week, we had the top prize – the copy of Shadow the Hedgehog signed by Takashi Iizuka – still to hand out to our winner. SEGA wasn’t going to give it to us without a fight. It took the strength of Kieran Butcher, rightful owner of the star prize, Rory Joscelyne, founder of SSN and Svend Joscelyne, founder of TSS, to stand up and take the challenge.

TSS Interview: Remix Factory

Look on the credits of Shadow the Hedgehog, and you’ll notice a lot of artists have put their time and dedication to the angst-fest. Obviously Crush 40 is there, and JULIEN-K makes a pleasing return. But there’s a British studio called ‘Remix Factory’, that have only done two tracks for the game but are quickly going up in the world. TSS has an exclusive chinwag with the founder, ‘LB’, on working with Jun Senoue, the origins of Remix Factory and future plans. Continue reading TSS Interview: Remix Factory

TSS REVIEW: Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut

The game that has been praised by many Sonic fans as the better of two Sonic Adventures has been re-released on Nintendo GameCube. After SA2 Battle and Mega Collection (the only other two Sonic games on the console), this comes as no real surprise – Sonic Team is milking its mascot as much as they can by enticing Nintendo fans into the world of the blue blur. Dreadknux’s Diaries: Ah’m So Tired… But It’ll Be Worth It

Oh my GOD! As I’m writing this I’m just starting work on the final site Channel, called the “Others Channel”. Thank feck I don’t have many sections to go now, that sodding Media Channel and that Sonic Channel both deserve my eternal hatred for the amount of work that required.

Dreadknux’s Diaries: ‘Awww… But I Can Rebuild!’

It’s come to this. HostOnce, the wretches that hosted us (paid for by Zifei… the poor sod, that’s his money down the pan), decided that TSS was using too much of their “unlimited bandwidth and webspace”. So they shut down the site. Without notifying one of us. At all. Gaffy gits.

Dreadknux’s Dairies: … The Storm. Bugger.

The whole of February must have been, in all honesty, the most arse-holic month I’ve had. And that’s a bad thing. Most definitely. It’s a bloody good job I didn’t take my vacation when I was thinking about it.

Dreadknux’s Diaries: The Calm Before The Storm…

The whole of January must have been, in all honesty, the most laid back month I’ve had. And that’s a good thing. Most definitely. After running a growing (both in size and popularity) Sonic site for nigh on two years, you’re bound to need a break every now and then.

Sonic Adventure DX Preview: The Problem With Ports

There usually comes a problem within the video game industry. Those little things called ‘ports’ that the Nintendo Gamecube seems to have too many of these days. It wouldn’t be half as bad if the developers actually made any decent overhauls – take an example like 007 NightFire. Now, the Gamecube version seemed to have the same graphics as the PS2 version, when in reality the GC could have easily had the same performance as Xbox. A shame, that.

Sonic Pinball Party Preview: Mind My Balls

Pinball. Ah, that craze during 1980s/1990s. How fun it was slotting in some coins (oi, easy!), shooting that last ball into the table and frantically trying to flip that bastard up to get that high score. Of course, when video game developers caught onto the coolness of this, they decided the inevitable. And hence, pinball video games were never really… well, any good really.

Dreadknux’s Diaries: Annual Reflection…

I got it right with the Sonic Site Awards 2002 – instead of a live broadcast, I pre-recorded the results so people could listen to it online. 😉 And it was a great turnout – people who were nominated showed up in the AIM Chat, and this may have brought about the biggest increase since its return.

TSS REVIEW: Sonic Advance 2

The original Sonic Advance was a good starter for the blue hedgehog on a ‘rival’ handheld console. Many Sonic purist fans however, spat it out after a fair old play, claiming that it harks little back to the good old days of the Mega Drive/Genesis. Well, fear no more, my pretties, because Sonic Advance 2 is in the house, and it Spin Dashes right back to its roots, and then some!

SVTcc 2002 Coverage: The Sonic Comic Convention Opens Its Doors!

It runs for two weeks. Two whole weeks people. Comics. That is the name of the game in the SonicVerse Team Comic Convention (SVTcc). Online Comics. Mostly the kind that are hand drawn, but you’ll also find some sprite-based comics here too. The Sonic Stadium has been given exclusive rights to cover this event, and with a show this newsworthy, we’d say that’s a pretty big honour!

Dreadknux’s Diaries: TSS relaunch, Staff, Sonic United…

Well, what an eventful month. The Sonic Stadium (now beginning to be lovingly abbreviated as TSS real quick) has been relaunched successfully, and without delay, interest has grown for it. Andrew and I both agreed that a team should be secured to maintain the website, as it’s just getting too damn big.

Dreadknux’s Diaries: The Race Against Time… and UCAS is not helping!

God dammit! This month is being SO stressful to me, both for the website, and in Real Life. The irony is, is that the stress I’m getting in RL is completely unnecessary! Take my college. I’m trying to get into University for next year, and therefore must fill in an admission form and have it sent to an organisation called ‘UCAS’. The College I am at now has a Student Support section, a part of which specialises in helping students with their UCAS forms… Hah. Hah hah bloody ha ha.

Dreadknux’s Diaries: Popularity? Moi?

Woah. Even though I have (and even stated several times) that The Sonic Stadium’s updates would be practically nil, people still keep visiting. That’s gotta be a good sign – I really need some of those signs now, as the place looks like it’s falling apart. If people stop visiting now, they’ll never get to come to the actual re-launch in October (well, hopefully October).

Opinion: Not-So-Mega Collection?

Dear me. Deary, deary me. Sonic Team are all over the shop about this one. Let’s start where it all began… a few months ago, Sonic Team announced (along with Sonic Advance 2) that they would be making a Sonic the Hedgehog compilation game for the Nintendo Gamecube. Fans of the blue hedgehog jumped for joy – and rightly so.
