The Sonic Stadium: 1 Million Hits + Update

As has been maniacally recorded by SSMB members across the world, The Sonic Stadium has entered the prestigious accolade of “come of age” Sonic sites by hitting that ever-elusive 1 Million Visitors mark. The actual occurance happened at 3pm or 4pm (depending on who you go by, or what timezone weirding thing you use – I always note things by GMT [UK Time] naturally), and had as many as 80 people logged into the SSMB at once all celebrating. ^_^ Thanks to everyone who’s supported, supporting, and will continue to support TSS and the Network simply by visiting our website and voting on those Toplists (;D).

I will be updating TSS’ History Section tomorrow, with details on the events, including an updated Timeline as well. May even get a little “Illegitimate” with the event and all.

But I DID promise something special today, sort-of to celebrate, sort-of because I had it lined up anyway, lol. XD This is another step of TSS’ great return to form this year: The Sonic Fan Club. You may have garnered some hints when I changed the “Creative Outlet” forum list to the namesake, and it is true that Biafra and I have been trying to sort out the section so that SSMB members can post their creations on TSS.

Get Ready… FOR 1M!

I don’t mean to alarm anyone, but The Sonic Stadium is getting DANGEROUSLY close to the 1 Million Visits mark. Lock up your doors and windows, protect your Sonic plushies. TSS, upon this very time and date of posting, has just under SIX HUNDRED Visits left to do. I think it will happen later this afternoon. Keep your eyes on that ticker. We have a surprise lined up for you today as well, so it’s just as well we have the 1M mark today as well innit?

Thank you, all

I’ve been informed today by my partner (who I developed the backend used by Sonic News with) that he’s negotiating a deal with a client, with us making minor modifications to it and selling it, for what I like to refer to as Nakabux. This deal could be the start of a nice little business venture for us, and I’m pretty damn excited as I’ve never sold any of my work before.

If you guys didn’t exist, we likely wouldn’t be making that engine as good as it is. So, thank you, for just being there and encouraging us to make the site better and our pockets deeper.

Sonic coming to the PSP?

The rumors and tidbits have been coming in fast this week with all kinds of pre E3 speculation and believed leaks. The newest obscurity to be found is a page on GameStop for an upcoming Sonic game on the PSP, with little details other than likely to be wrong release date and price. The speculated release date is the first of November this year, its accuracy is yet to proven however.

Interestingly enough, the game is listed as an Action/Adventure/Racing game, could the recent Sonic R Extreme rumors actually be true? We’ll let you decide on that one until further information is released.

Special thanks to Hogfather at SSMB for posting the link. Be sure to stay with SONIC NEWS for future developments in this story.

Sonic R EXTREME Update

4 days ago, forum member Spinos infomed us that the title Sonic R EXTREME had been added to Game Crazy’s release list. Yesterday he returned with photographic proof which was promptly e-mailed to SEGA for inspection. The photographs can be viewed under the media links.

SEGA replied to us, and informed us that it was all, in fact, simply an error. They told us that no such game exists, and that both they and GC will be working together the remove the misinformation from their release schedules.

That pretty much closes the lid on this one. SEGA is, after all, the authority on this case, so any further rumour spreading is pointless. The game has not been in any way officially announced, so Sonic News will no longer cover speculation or rumours on it.

Shadow the Hedgehog Trailer Re-Released

Following news of GameTrailers leaking a new Shadow the Hedgehog Trailer on April 1, SEGA have now allowed the showcasing of the trailer on all media and fan websites.

SONIC NEWS reported the leak, which had GameTrailers adding a sequence of the new game involving Shadow facing the Egg Fleet and more moves available at the player’s disposal. The trailer was removed some hours later, yet many fansites had already obtained a copy of the trailer and offered it for download.

We contacted both SEGA and GameTrailers for comment, and it appears that the leaked trailer was not to be unveiled to the public until SEGA’s Pre-E3 Conference next month. SEGA consequently retracted their copies of the trailer, and requested all other websites to remove the movie from their sites.

Sonic 360 revealed by Kikizo Games

Kikizo Games today posted an interview with Yojiro Ogawa, a Project Director from SEGA Japan. The interview in itself is somewhat interesting, however in the introduction to the interview, Kikizo games lists Sonic 360 as one of Sonic Teams upcoming titles. It has been known Sonic Team have been planning another mystery Sonic title for quite some time now, could this be it?

As this appeared theory have instantly been created, Microsoft next generation of their Xbox console is been believed to be called Xbox 360 by many reliable figures in video game journalism. Along with the title speculation and other bits of evidence has revealed that some game titles themselves will have the 360 suffix appended to them. This falls in place with the first theory that Sonic 360 may be an Xbox 360 exclusive title, also tying in with previous reports quoting SEGA promising a new Sonic game for the upcoming Xbox console.

The next (and somewhat more rational theory) is that this is simply the name of the new Sonic title for the Nintendo DS, not only did Kikizo fail to list it on that page suggesting the game may now be titled differently, but with Nintendo DS touch screen controlling abilities may also tie in with the 360.

Stay with SONIC NEWS for more information as this develops.

Sonic Game details from Game Crazy

Sonic News has been tipped off by an employee of Game Crazy and forum member Spinos that Game Crazy’s release dates have been updated – including the new Sonic game, titled “Sonic R EXTREME”.

The date has been set at Q1 2006 (first quater – January, February, March) and is said to be on all platforms, but no other details were available. If this information is true, then we can expect a sequel to the SEGA Saturn/PC racing game which involved Sonic and friends racing each other in 3D environments.

Game Crazy have yet to update their website with any information, however, Spinos recommends asking at your local store for more details. If anyone in America gets an opportunity to confirm this information, then please contact SN immediately.

Phantasy Star Universe Confirmed for US

Phantasy Star Universe has been officially announced for both North American and Europe release by Sega. Though this was obviously going to happen sooner or later, new information has been revealed. The game is scheduled for a February of 2006 release on both the Sony Playstation 2 and Windows PC.

The game will feature both a story driven single player game and a PSO inspired online game seperate from that experience in one package. The game will feature 40 hours of single player exploration, with many characters and cutscenes involved. The storyline follows a 17 year old Ethan Waber as he searches for his kidnapped sister from a mysterious force known only as THE SEED.

SEGA backing Next-Generation Xbox

3 days ago, Microsoft announced a list of publishers for the next-generation Xbox, including SEGA corporation. Simon Jeffery of SEGA promises more from SEGA’s great franchises, including a new Sonic the Hedgehog game.

Microsoft came up with a list of publishers for their new Xbox, which currently has no confirmed name, on Friday the 8th of April. The list includes many big-name publishers, but most importantly the list confirms that SEGA are to back the new Xbox. This may not come as a surprise, as SEGA have released many titles for the current Xbox – most recently, Super Monkey Ball Deluxe. Hopefully in the pre-E3 Microsoft conference we’ll be able to see a complete list of titles SEGA plan to have ready by the console’s release.

SFGHQ Starts Rebuilding

Smidge, who heads the Sonic FanGame HQ, recently updated the site with an explanation of what happened involving the hack threats.

In mid-March, the SFGHQ forum was hacked by an individual called Manickillaz, who proceeded to make themselves an administrator and mess up the forum. After this, they threatened to hack the SFGHQ Website unless they were made an op at the unofficial IRC chatroom #srb2. Later Smidge refused the deal and deleted the entire site himself.

In his new update, Smidge estimates that rebuilding of the SFGHQ site will be complete towards the end of April. Importantly, the Sonic Amateur Games Expo (SAGE) is still planned for July, with the forum’s return scheduled to be in time for it.

Shadow Trailer Relisted

Update: The new Shadow the Hedgehog Trailer has been relisted on The Sonic Stadium. There was some hoo-hah over GameTrailers breaking the embargo on the new trailer some time ago (it was probably THEIR idea of an April Fools joke), and I’ve been in touch with both GT and SEGA-Europe and SEGA America, and it appears the trailer in question was never to be released until just before E3, next month. Literally, the day before. Perhaps in a special SEGA E3 Presentation.

Svend, Thank you for cooperation re: GT. The trailer was let out before we intended it to. We decided to release that trailer to the public just three days ago via IGN. We will be making it available to the public this afternoon. Please feel free to re-post this trailer as of now, with the full permission of SEGA.

Cheers, Bret

New Shadow the Hedgehog Trailer Leaked

Early yesterday, a new Shadow the Hedgehog movie trailer was released on Game Trailers, however later that night it was mysteriously removed, but not before fans watched the new video showing off Shadow flying a dragon around the Egg fleet, destroying GUN bots, slashing up enemies with the weird alien sword, blowing up doors with a bazooka, using his blast attack, and much more.

For those that missed the trailer, many Sonic website managed to get it before the entry was removed. Not only does affiliate Shadow of a Hedgehog have the trailer to download via Fileplanet, The Sonic Stadium also has new information and movie analysis via the Shadow the Hedgehog Game Archive.

April Fool Madness

April 1st has come and gone, and many Sonic Websites got into the habit of tricking their visitors and members. This story provides a shortlist of Sonic sites that did their part in tricking their members. If your Sonic site is not listed here, be sure to give Dreadknux an email at dreadknux at yahoo dot co dot uk.

What remains humourous about both this list of April Fool pranks and a news report SONIC NEWS reported on March 31st, is the fact that each had their fair share of visitors who were not impressed, even stating to some websites, including Sonic Online and SonicAnime.net, that they should be ashamed of themselves. SONIC NEWS reminds the Sonic community of the age-old April Fool superstition; if a victim reacts to a prank in an angry or disagreeable fashion, they are conditioned with bad luck forever. Preview Log: Shadow Shaping Up

The announcement of Shadow the Hedgehog to the world was certainly a shock to the system. For those Shadow fans it was finally a chance to see his past, what really happened, fill in those plotholes. For those who didn’t like Shadow, they took to it with disgust (and even some fans spat at it for the implementation of guns) and refuse to look at it. Those who just aren’t bothered, weren’t bothered though. So at least that’s progress.

Since the trailer, TSS voiced its opinions on the game, wondering how well the gun system would be implemented. The graphics really did look sore and dated, and really didn’t look like things had progressed from Sonic Adventure 1 on the Dreamcast at all.

001.jpg 002.jpg 003.jpg 004.jpg 005.jpg

Recently however, SEGA were kind enough to send us five high resolution screenshots for the game, that look, we must say, absolutely gorgeous. There is no way these graphics were produced on a PlayStation2, so there is hope for a release on other platforms too (although it has NOT been confirmed, rumour has it that Shadow will be PS2 only).

Even more news on the game that we can tell you, that Shadow fans will 50 missions to blast through. We will be seeing Shadow caught in a huge battle involving aliens, good old favourites GUN and, excellently enough, Dr. Eggman will be pitching in an appearance too. Players will be able to grab more weapons than previously imagined, with a huge list of guns apparently noted for disposal, as well as objects and vehicles. Yes you read, vehicles.

We were under the impression that Sonic Team USA was developing this title. And of course, TSS was correct with its prediction – although the studio now seems to be under the rather coi name of SEGA Studio USA, most likely a result of the SEGA merge-in over in Japan, there. Takashi Iizuka, Game Director of the studio, will be heading the project up; his noted work includes Sonic Adventure 2 itself and Sonic Adventure DX. Here’s what he had to say on the Sonic spinoff:

“Since we first introduced him in Sonic Adventure 2, we have wanted to feature Shadow in his own game… we maintained Shadow as a mysterious character and now fans can control his destiny by engaging in a unique gameplay experience that offers a multitude of possibilities!”

Hoo-hah, here comes the bomb. Those waiting to hear about how Shadow ‘survived’ and what the real deal is with the plotholes may come away disappointed, as it appears that Shadow the Hedgehog will feature multiple endings! Although an excellent gameplay mechanic, this can only come as very confusing to Shadow fans and anti-fans alike. Surely fans won’t be thrown into the frustrating situation as to be confronted with five different explanations for the events that passed since Sonic Adventure 2? But maybe it’s a feature SEGA Studio USA may produce tactfully. We can only hope.

So, is Shadow a robot? Is he suffering from anmesia? Lord knows the real reason now, it appears SEGA don’t really want to say anything official on it, but what matters is that YOU control the ending, via many different routes at many different points in the game. We’re assuming how you play the game – how much you use your guns over your agility, for example – will help decide in how “good or evil” Shadow really is.

To top this all off, we have a treat for you. A brand new Shadow the Hedgehog trailer, woo. You can download it for free in the Movies section, but it appears a little strange.

Alongside showing different camera angles of exactly the same gameplay, we noted that the graphics are nothing like what we’ve seen in the high resolution shots, displayed above. We’re hoping that the high-res aren’t just PC engine test snapshots – it’s looking very much that possibility, which is a shame because the graphics now look drab again. And we get the impression that the guns, Chaos Control charge-up moves and other specials that Shadow may have at his repertoire could get boring very quickly – they seem to “do a Sonic Heroes”, in which using such moves slows down gameplay. If you hated Sonic Heroes because the team system and moves were “stop-start”, you won’t be impressed by Shadow’s new trailer, unfortunately.

If you like DragonBall Z though, you’re in for a treat with the hugh explosions that look like they take ten seconds to charge up. Kudos for SEGA for the sword for Shadow though – despite what we’ve said about the guns, we rather like the big fat meaty sword in the middle of the trailer. Other highlights of the new trailer include a big fat mutant boss that seems to spit fireballs (looking like it escaped from Doom or something) and a few rather cool homages – Shadow does his own take of Sonic Adventure’s “Sky Chase” Bonus Stage by chasing what seems to be an Egg Carrier look-a-like, on top of some kind of dragon thing. Hey, when you don’t have a fox with a plane to do it…

Overall, we’re getting slightly interested in this one. It looks rather appealing to some degree. You can never really go nuts for a game that’s in essence, a spinoff. Because spinoffs are always to be taken with a pinch of salt. Sometime they turn out great (Sonic Battle) other times they turn out a chunk of turd (Sonic Labyrinth). Shadow has enough going for it, but our main concern is the treatment of the gameplay – a return to “stop-start” gameplay from Sonic Heroes plus some charge-up moves that seem to take a rather pointless length of time look like potential turn-offs. We’ll keep you posted.

April Foolish

Ah, April Fools Day. Yesterday was really something for the Sonic Community, as almost every site joined into the festivities. But trust The Sonic Stadium to come up with the best April Fools prank on the 1st – remember on TSS we announced “something big”? Well, we pretended that we were ahead of schedule on our announced Sonic Smash Cards and launched it on April 1st. Check it out here: http://www.sonicstadium.org/ssc/.

Looking at it now, it seems very convincing, until you see the “April Fool” error. There were different ‘honest’ errors every hour or so until we broke that error to the SSMB members at 8pm GMT. We fooled everyone, despite some front from members saying they plugged it beforehand. Check out the activity here, and the explanation for our prank here. We kick ass.

April Fools: Explanations and Clarifications

OK, first of all… APRIL FOOL!

Second of all, some clarification. THE WHOLE LAUNCH OF SONIC SMASH CARDS TODAY WAS A HOAX. THE SMASH CARDS THEMSELVES ARE STILL GOING TO BE MADE. The page is a PHP page, sure, but the design is mostly static. The header “User Bar” (Blue bar saying ‘Sonic Smash Cards’, ‘Forums’, etc) is static, you should try going there when NOT logged in ;). The cards are hoaxes, in fact I left the tiniest clue – check the Card Numbers on each of the five cards (in the top right corner of each card).

Third of all, a Disclaimer. The ways of the Internet means that the 12noon rule so implied with normal April Fools has been null and void online. However, a good concept of _international_ time is always good. For example, right now would not be a good time to try and April Fool someone. However, the time we began ours (3pm GMT) is not so bad. So you can let us off for that one, Prometheus.

Beware of April Fools

Ah, April Fools, don’t you love them? Well, you would if you’re the “doer” and not the “doee”. But a whole day before the pranking festivities, a Sonic site has decided to get into the spirit of hoaxing already.

SonicAnime.net, well respected Sonic X resource, has today posted an unsourced news story, claiming that SEGA of America have plans to strip Sonic the Hedgehog of his duty as company mascot and replace him with angsty sour-faced git, Shadow. Despite the amount of Shadow fans online, all who fell for the trick were not pleased that Sonic seemed to have had his job removed.

Happy EASTAAAAAH!

Hooplah! It’s Easter, the time of eating Choccy Eggs… there’s also something vaguely religious about it and all (…NAAAH, the eggs! ;D), but woo. I’m going to be taking a day or so’s holiday for Easter with family (which means no comp access, hooray – be nice while I’m gone guys!), but it wouldn’t be a holiday without a long-overdue update, right? 😉

Well, after all that Shadow the Hedgehog hullabaloozah, you people certainly have been vocal about that. Be it in the SSMB Forums, in the TSS Mailbag or be it submission of Fan Articles. ST USA Interviewed About Future Sonic Games

1UP.com have posted an interview with none other than Takashi Iizuka from Sonic Team USA. While nothing was hugely unveiled, a few interesting points popped out.

  • It seems that SEGA are looking into bringing Sonic online, as well as other features so far new to the series.
  • Sonic Team are working on developing titles for all consoles (including the PSP).
  • Sonic Team have hinted that we may be seeing another spin-off this year – “Sonic has not just been a platformer in the past, and he will continue to do interesting things this year.”
  • This year’s E3 shall be a “banner year” for Sonic.
  • Sonic Team also hinted at including Sonic CD on their next compilation title, or remaking it.
