Smithsonian Art Museum to Feature Sonic in Games Exhibition?

The Smithsonian American Art Museum is setting up an exhibition focusing on video game artwork – and Sonic the Hedgehog could feature prominently in the upcoming showcase.

Called The Art of Video Games, the event takes a look at iconic games throughout the last 40 years and explores the industry “as an artistic medium, with a focus on striking visual effects, the creative use of new technologies, and the most influential artists and designers.” Better yet, there are 80 slots for games to be featured – and visitors to the museum’s website can vote for the games that they feel best represent ‘video games as art.’

Representing the Sonic the Hedgehog (and related) series in this voting stage are the following:

  • Sonic CD (Action Game – Sega Genesis)
  • Sonic Adventure (Action Game – Sega Dreamcast)
  • NiGHTS into Dreams… (Action Game – Sega Saturn)

Click here to visit the voting page – you’ll need to register an account with the website – and take your time in voting for the games you feel deserve the cut. Certainly, don’t vote for Sonic just because it’s Sonic, but… well, it’s Sonic isn’t it?

The Great Home Page Experiment

Apologies for the brief and rather flavourless update this evening – was in the middle of sprucing up the home page and my laptop’s battery caved in. As you can see, we’re going through something of an early Spring clean, so excuse the mess while I’m unable to fix it basically.

The general idea is that all posts will be morphed into this one monster list of TSS articles – we have written a lot of stuff over the last week, but some posts have not been as popular as others because they were hidden underneath other sections. I hope to have in place a system where users can easily see new posts on the home page since their last visit, so you don’t miss a beat.

The top of the page – horrific Dr Robotnik and all – is intended to be for the latest ‘hot’ stories, be they news, articles or anything else. I will be adding text into each of the three (one currently doesn’t work – something else to fix) hot story images as soon as I get the chance. In the meantime, enjoy a turning Robotnik without any context. Sweet dreams!

Art Contributions Start for 20th Anniversary Fan Tribute

Long-standing community member Psyguy has launched an initiative for a fan tribute to celebrate Sonic the Hedgehog’s 20th Anniversary. The plan is to create a digital art book featuring a collection of “some of the best artwork from around the globe.”

It’s a project that follows the lead that Udon Comics established with the Street Fighter and Darkstalkers Tribute books. Fanart old and new will be considered, but limited space means only the cream of the crop will get included in the 100 pages planned. There are no plans to actually publish the project when completed, but naturally Psy is open to anyone that might want to sponsor such an endeavour. Udon? Sega?

If you fancy getting your work included in the digital booklet (or have some additional questions to ask about the project) then you can find all the details – along with already-submitted pieces – on its website. TSS Christmas Contest: Entries & Winner!

We’ve had quite a response to our Christmas Carol competition – and all of the entries I’ve received have been extremely creative! So first of all, as The Sonic Stadium changes into a festive design, let me first wish all our readers all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year – and a big well done and thanks to all who submitted entries. They’re all inspired!

I’ll run through all the entries first before unveiling the winner – there’s PAL versions of Sonic Colours on the Wii, Sonic Colours on the DS, Sonic Free Riders on Xbox 360 Kinect and Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing on the line here! So let’s go!

The Entries

We Wisp You A Merry Christmas (text) – Stephan62
Stephan62 was the first submission we had, and it was a really cool twist on the door-to-door modern classic, We Wish You A Merry Christmas. Naturally, the many inclusion of Wisps and urges to buy Sonic Colours runs throughout this version of the carol. It’s a good way to try and convince jaded Sonic fans that there is hope yet in this franchise. Well done mate.

Sonic Visits Christmas Island (text) – Kazu Matsumoto
Another entrant took the time to do a complete rewrite of a song – this time from The Nightmare Before Christmas’ “What’s This?” This version, titled “Sonic Visits Christmas Island,” comes courtesy of Kazu Matsumoto, who shows us that any kind of festive-sounding track can be transformed into a Sonical, magical wonder. Great job!

Black Christmas (audio) – Concorde Hedgehog
It’s Jingle Bells, Shadow style! This extended audio clip has everyone’s favourite angst-hog knock on doors with Black Doom as they sing carols for the local neighbours. Unfortunately, things get a little bit out of hand and Black Doom starts doing his crazy ‘betrayal’ speech again. Sometimes it’s difficult not to feel sorry for Shadow if the choices he has for buddies is Inspector Gadget and Sonic the cheesy cheery-hog. Good effort Concorde!

A Christmas of Sonic Games (video) – Sonictoast
This rather funky video sees Big the Cat (our favourite hero) roll through the majority of the games in Sonic’s near-20-year lifetime. In the style of a classic Christmas carol. The singing is pretty befitting of Big, although why Eggman would want to duet with him we have no idea. Must be the festive season making him act all strange. Nice one Sonictoast!

A ChaotiX-Mas Carol (text/video) – Kjeld Oostra
Kjeld Oostra submitted this video – although he notes that the music in the background isn’t part of the song. It’s just there for decoration. What we really have to pay attention to is the words that Espio is singing to try and sway Vector over. Probably in an attempt to get a bigger cut of the detective reward money. Who knows. Well done!

Eggman Christmas (audio) – Allybee
Allybee showed sheer dedication to this contest – not only did she record an alternative version where she sings a ‘Female’ version (the link leads to the original, Eggman version), but she did it all while her husband was out! His return scared the hell out of her apparently, leading her to re-record one of the audio files again. That’s worthy enough of credit, and the song is pretty sweet too. Well written, awesomely sung – nice work.

You’re A Mean One, Robotnik! (audio) – Unrealperson4564
Now here’s an entry nobody expected – rather than your average Sonic character singing songs, we have the President from Sonic Adventure 2 bringing the carol-based thunder. Unfortunately, if the President was only able to retaliate to Eggman’s domination threats by simply having a go at him through the means of interpretive singing, it’s no wonder the bad egg was able to easily take over the world. Great thinking outside of the box there!

E.G.G.M.A.N. Christmas (audio) – Sonicmark
Sonicmark cracked out the E.G.G.M.A.N. theme song for his entry, transforming the villainous decree of world domination into a bit of a moan about Christmas from an apparently grumpy old git. The Ebeneezer Scrooging of our favourite rotund bad guy is genius, and Sonicmark’s not bad at singing along to a comedy song himself! Awesome stuff.

A Sonic Carol (image) – Swiss
Swiss decided to decorate his Christmas Carol with an awesome picture of Sonic the Hedgehog. He is probably the best character for the job – he likes to cosplay as Santa more than the rest of them. The carol’s a brilliant take on SatAM’s Fastest Thing Alive theme song. Next time you see an episode of the classic cartoon, see if you can imagine jingling bells in the background while singing these alternative lyrics. Very inventive, great job!

Rudolph the Red Nosed… (image) – Nemain
Sonic and Tails attempt to sing Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, but is ninja’d by Robotnik’s PINGAS. There are no words. Only awesome. Click the link to see the whole comic – another excellent piece of work by Nemain, including stunning artwork as always!

The Winner

Hark! The Chaos Emerald King (comic/animation) – Peda
This incredible submission by Peda has it all. A fresh new spin on a timeless Christmas Carol, excellent singing to convey the message, and some fab artwork to carry the carol along as it tells the story. We were really impressed with the creativity in the lyrics to begin with, but the animation that Peda made to complement the carol (click the link to see it) is icing on the cake. Excellent stuff, Peda – have a bunch of Sonic games on us!

Contest: Win This Holiday’s Sonic Games!

It’s Christmas time! And what have we learned? Well, we’ve learned that Sonic Team can really get their heads down and crack out a decent game when they’re not distracting themselves with fluorescent flying toys or something similar. We’ve also learned that controller-free gaming can be done (somewhat) with a Kinect and that the chaps at Sumo Digital are heroes. Seriously, we want S0L’s babies.

Would you like to learn what we have learned in 2010? ‘How, and where exactly is this going?’ I hear you ask. Well, by entering our awesome Christmas competition of course, and winning yourself a PAL copy of four Sonic game released this year.

We’ve got a copy of Sonic Colours on the Wii and Nintendo DS, Sonic Free Riders on the Xbox 360 and as a bonus we’re throwing in Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing on either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 (not pictured, obviously).

The Challenge

So, what have you got to do? As I said before, it’s Christmas time. Round about now, kids are going to start knocking on your door and sing butchered versions of carols. Some won’t even bother to sing carols, only choosing to mumble half the chorus to ‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas.’ We think the characters in the Sonic universe can do a bit better than that. Your task is to create a Christmas Carol, as performed by a Sonic character.

You can take any approach to this as you wish – you can modify an existing Christmas Carol and replace certain words with some of Big the Cat’s favourite things, for example (so that would just be fishing, then). You can write an entirely new carol for a villain or hero to sing, if that’s what you’d rather do. It doesn’t even have to be written – if you’re an artistic type, why not draw a little comic or art piece with your favourite character singing this new masterpiece of yours in front of someone’s house? Or for the really brave, you could record yourself on audio or video and send it to us that way.

TSS Vault: Season’s Greetings

The Sonic Stadium has been around for over ten years. That’s quite a milestone for a humble fansite dedicated to Sonic the Hedgehog. Especially one that’s done so much over the last decade for the community. But there’s a lot that we haven’t done – stuff that we have been sent in the past that we meant to add to the site, but never found time to do so. Take this series of articles as a way of me finally being able to show off some of the best of people’s creativity, as well as funky stuff in the Sonic world.

As there’s a lot of random things, it’s going to be difficult to categorise them all, but I’m going to give it a go anyway. I may also throw in some classic TSS stuff that we have added in the past too, just for posterity. So, welcome to the first Vault article, dedicated to festive things.

TSS Christmas Image, 2007

This celebratory image was created by hatted superstar T-Bird, and was to wish all of our readers a Merry Christmas back in 2007. It’s a true sign of the times, with renditions of pretty much all of the TSS and SSMB staff at the time. DiZ, Roareye, Turbo, Flint, B’man (the balloon), Violet and Strong Bad are all included here, along with presses to Iceman, Shazra and Sarge.

Christmas Don’t Be Late, 2007 [Download]

The previous art piece was part of our incredible Christmas event at The Sonic Stadium, where we replaced the front page with an advent calendar and gave away little things every day until the 25th December. Towards the end, we unleashed this – a music recording of most of the TSS/SSMB staff covering ‘Christmas, Don’t Be Late’ from Alvin and the Chipmunks. The result is quite terrifying, but it was a nice gesture all the same.

The NiGHTS Stadium, 2003

Of course, we started celebrating Christmas at TSS long before the advent calendar. In 2003, the entire site was changed to the theme of NiGHTS into Dreams. Well, Christmas NiGHTS to be more exact, but hey it fit the time of year just perfectly. Unfortunately, all we have left to show for the design is this banner image, but you can get a good idea of how we decorated TSS on the back of that. The original, large chequered background turned purple and was highlighted with snow effects. Gorgeous. I updated the site with a load of NiGHTS info at the time as well.

CosmicFalcon – My Favourite Hedgehog, 2005 [Download]

Not particularly Christmassy, but equally festive for another reason – this was the winning entry for The Sonic Stadium’s massive 5th Anniversary competition. It only seems like yesterday when we heard CosmicFalcon singing about buying all of Sonic’s games “even if they are so very craaaap.” Listening to it today, it still makes us chuckle, and was well-deserving of the Sonic Gems Collection (Japanese Gamecube version) and arcade stick that he ended up winning. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Slovakia, 2006

Now these pictures are absolutely incredible, and I feel so stupid for hanging onto them for this long, so I’m putting them up here now so I can somewhat redeem myself. On two occasions in late 2006, I was sent an image from Ľuba Marcinová from Košice, Slovakia. The first one is a Christmas celebration, with Sonic manning a sleigh driven by Silver and Shadow. The second was sent to see in the New Year in 2007. Both were made with the help of Kristy & Tom and Eva & Emil Wessely, according to the original emails.

“Sorry again it came a bit late, but like they say – better than never,” read the New Year email. Er, likewise, Ľuba. Sorry!

‘Yuji Naka’s Christmas Message, 2006 [Download]

During a random era of The Sonic Hour live broadcast, Roareye and myself took to ‘inviting’ ‘Yuji Naka’ to our show for a special ‘interview.’ What happened was the birth of a brilliant parody character that took to the airwaves to cheer Roareye and myself on, and to denounce everyone’s games but his own. This was a little Christmas message that ‘Yuji’ sent out to Sonic Hour listeners back in 2006, but unless you try and dig out that particular episode there’s only one other place you can hear it – this recording. Enjoy.

TSS’ Christmas Visit to SEGA, 2005 [Read]

These days, plenty of community websites make a habit of visiting SEGA’s offices to see the latest games and grab some free goodies for their dazzling loyalty to their brands. It’s a world away from the situation in 2005, where nobody besides professional journalists ever went near the company offices. The winner of our innovative Shadow Week competition – the first in which a fansite teamed up with SEGA for prizes – was able to get a tour of the London HQ and so Roareye and myself tagged along to chronicle the day. It’s a fantastic look back to an event that was a real rarity before the establishment of SEGA’s community department and ArchAngelUK’s appointment to community manager.

Darkspeeds’ SSA Thank-You, 2006 [Download]

Elson ‘Darkspeeds’ Wong earned himself quite a few awards during 2006’s Sonic Site Awards, and he took the time to record a thank-you message to everyone who voted for him. It quickly turned into a Christmas message at the same time, due to the time in which it was recorded. He used the theme song from NiGHTS into Dreams, Dreams Dreams, as the backing track for his message. Which is funny, because…

Dreads Dreads, 2006 [Download]

You can’t have a coverage of TSS over the Christmas years without including this ‘gem’ of a karaoke song. Yes, I decided to absolutely butcher the theme song to Sega’s NiGHTS into Dreams for the first Wrecks Factor competition back in 2006. My approach was to sing in a decidedly crap ‘swing’ style, and the judges deemed my attempt at being crap authentic enough to come last place. The forfeit was to sing the DK Rap, but as I never found the time to do it after the event, AAUK picked the debut Summer of Sonic convention for myself and Roareye to perform it…

I’ll be adding a lot more lost submissions and remnants from the past over the next few weeks! In the meantime, have a great run up to Christmas and don’t get swamped by the snow/store sales!

Yuji Naka Chills Out With Naoto Oshima and Takashi Iizuka

You probably thought that most of the Sonic Team Old Guard don’t really get on. Well, today Yuji Naka proved that this was not the case, as he posted photos on his Twitter account about an encounter with Sonic the Hedgehog designer Naoto Oshima! The artist, who left Sega shortly after Sonic Adventure to form Artoon, visited Naka’s PROPE studio and brought with him a little gift.

I think it’s fair to say we all want that picture. Yuji Naka then posted a Tweet with the following photo, adding that current Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka joined the pair for some dinner in a local grilled chicken restaurant. Beers in hand as well, it seems like. The Japanese work hard and dine hard as well, it seems.

This funky meeting of minds most likely served absolutely no purpose other than to have old friends sit down and have a few drinks – but no doubt the topic of Sonic will come up. We can just imagine Naka-san asking Iizuka how work is like, with Iizuka throwing his hands up and jovially exclaiming “oh you know, the same old. That crazy fanbase, eh?” followed by chuckles around the table.

All three developers have had a big hand in shaping Sonic into the gaming icon he is today – Naka-san programmed the original Sonic games, and led Sonic Team during the Dreamcast era, while Naoto Oshima designed the Sonic characters themselves. Takashi Iizuka, although he largely oversees development on modern Sonic titles, began his tenure at the studio working as a level designer for Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and was the lead game designer for NiGHTS into Dreams.

Iizuka: We ‘Updated’ the Physics for Sonic 4

Sonic Team bossman Takashi Iizuka is a lovable chap in person, but gosh does he say the darndest things. He’s like an adorable grandpa that sometimes spouts politically incorrect slurs that would only be acceptable in the 1970s.

Recently, he demonstrated this again in an interview with Nintendo Power, where he was asked to elaborate on the rather wonky physics of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1. Take it away, Papa Iizuka:

NP: We enjoyed [Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1], but the physics felt a bit off compared to the Genesis games. Is that something you’ll look to tweak in future episodes?

TI: In this title, we have not done a straight port of the gameplay [from the Genesis games], but rather updated it with actions which could not be done in the previous titles, like ceiling-running. These changes probably made for a different feel to the longtime Sonic fans. We’re happy for feedback like this, and we’ll make sure we can improve the quality even further in upcoming titles.

Make of that what you will – all I’ll say is “Keep on shinin’, Iizuka. Keep on shinin’.”

TSS 10th Anniversary: More Fan Submissions [Update]

Well, we’re nothing if not truly grateful for the number of people who pass through The Sonic Stadium and take the time to enjoy the content we offer you guys. But I never expected such an awesome response to our 10th Anniversary – you can see some creations already submitted to us right here and the banners at the top of each page have been created by someone in the community too.

I’ve been sitting on these other fantastic submissions for a while now, so it’s time I gave these guys some love!

Tobibrocki has drawn some fantastic art pieces for us in the past, but this one surely takes the cake. Tails is more than happy to engage in reckless vandalism in the name of TSS, and Sonic’s celebrating the occasion by wearing some Way Past Cool threads. Sally’s gone and had our site name sketched on her boots, and Amy is admiring the reaction on Dr. Eggman’s face. If only we were called The Eggman Stadium, eh? Bonus points for random bird in the background. Thanks Tobibrocki!

‘Sonicismyhero’ took the time to do this brilliant sketch of Sonic partying next to a 10th Anniversary birthday cake. With the submission he wrote; “Though I am more of a lurker than a commenter, I browse almost every article you write up, and am always there for the latest news you post. Thank-you for all your hard work, and dedication you’ve put in through the years. I can remember the sites early years like it was yesterday.” Aw, well thanks for all the hard work for doing this awesome drawing, Sonicismyhero. I hope we can kick it for years to come.


This lovely picture was sent to me by CTOONfan1, who felt that the event was best marked by showcasing some of the most popular characters in the Sonic franchise. I’m not sure if Shadow really wants to wish TSS a happy anniversary – he looks like he wants to punch our heads in. Bad moods aside, we love this picture, so thank you CTOONfan1!


Kjeld told me that he went for a “new sort of [art] style” with this one. The result is above, and it makes me laugh for reasons unexplained. It might be the absurd stickman nature of the characters, or it might be Knuckles’ absurd grin, or it could be Tails’ absurd face. Either way, it’s delightfully absurd, and you’ll notice that Kjeld made a banner for TSS in this style too. Thanks for this mate.

Finally, TYoshi created this short video using Sonic Advance sprites to congratulate us on a successful ten years of existing. Blink and you’ll miss it, but it’s a great message and we really appreciate the time taken to make an animation for us. Cheers!

UPDATE: ProjectZuel was kind enough to create another image to celebrate TSS’ 10th birthday, and it features none other than Dreadknux himself, proudly standing tall with the =TSS= flag. I haven’t used the Dreadknux avatar in quite some time, so it’s pretty cool that someone remembers my neon green online persona. Many thanks, ProjectZuel, and we also wish you another 10 Way Past Cool Years. Erm, not that you’re not likely to see them, or anything… er… what I mean is, thanks.

The Sonic Hour: All Episodes Online, Series 6 Next Sunday!

SEGASonic Radio is gearing itself for another Project 24 event (Sunday 5th December 2010), and to celebrate I’ve finally found time to update the podcast feed to The Sonic Hour, the radio station’s flagship live show. Presented by myself (Dreadknux) and Roareye Black, TSH has been going for something like 6 years now – almost as long as The Sonic Stadium itself!

Since our very first episode in Christmas 2003, we’ve recorded a total of 93 episodes and at least 3 specials. We’ve had several presenter line-ups to join the ‘Dread x Roareye’ tag team, from Anarchy Rat in the early days to Jemnezmy most recently, and all kinds of special guests inbetween.

Project 24 will also mark the first episode of Series 6 of The Sonic Hour. As always, we will be live on air between 6pm – 7pm GMT every Sunday (please check your timezones for your area), with #601 broadcasting on the 5th December.

A sixth series, and the 100th episode right around the corner?! How in the hell did we ever get this popular? Is it our randomness? Our lame attempts at humour? Our insistent Sonic music playlist of awesome? Police Lieutenant Smith? Lyle the Bear? Rory’s Monologue? Dodgy Dread’s Emporium of Sonic Chintz? WongWatch? Or was it just Sonic Pants?

Either way, you can now catch up with every single episode of the show! Due to popular demand as well, all Series 4 and Series 5 episodes have been re-encoded into AAC-HE format, cutting down filesize dramatically with just as much sound quality. Archie Sonic #219 to Feature Sonic Colours Adaptation

Had your fill of Sonic Colours yet? No? Good, because Archie is planning to bring you another helping with the upcoming Sonic #219, which features a comic book adaptation of the intergalactic adventure.

The Sonic Colours adaptation will serve as a five-page back-up story introducing the premise of the game and teasing some elements of the game’s plot. Archie fan favourites Ian Flynn and Tracy Yardley will be writing and penciling the strip respectively. For Flynn, it will be his seventh Sonic video game adaptation.

“It’s true to the source,” Flynn said. “We were provided with some awesome early concept art and rough cuts of some of the gameplay, which offered us the ability to make the transition between comic book and video game much smoother – I think the fans are really gonna dig this one!” Yardley added by speaking of his joy in covering stories from the SEGA games. “The game looks incredible and I’m pleased with how our adaptation turned out.”

Obviously the Sonic Colours strip won’t be the only thing to keep you hooked on issue #219, otherwise it’d be a very thin book – the released cover, above, teases the lead story titled “In Service to the King,” which marks the build-up to Archie’s 20th Anniversary celebration for Sonic.

Sonic #219 will hit stores on the week of the 6th December – all signs are pointing to the Wednesday (8th).

TSS Exclusive: Sonic Colours Wallpaper

Sonic Colours was released last Friday (in Europe – officially, the US gets it tomorrow but it’s clear that some retailers across the pond just couldn’t wait to sell it early), and it’s a proper corker as well. TSS will be publishing its in-depth review shortly, but until then you can enjoy this exclusive wallpaper to jazz up your desktop.

You may remember that Sonic Wrecks and Sonic Retro have also posted up exclusive Sonic Colours wallpapers, and TSS’ offering differs in that it features Sonic, Tails and Yakker leaping against the colourful game’s title card design. Cool, isn’t it? You can download the European version here (which has the name spelled as ‘Colours’) and the North American version here (‘Colors’ – shudder).

‘Happy 10th TSS’ – From the Readers

A while ago, Brad and I asked for some of you guys to get creative for The Sonic Stadium’s 10th Anniversary. We’ve had a couple of cool submissions since then – the fantastic banners from syaming-li and Roarey Raccoon notwithstanding of course!

First, here’s a nice art piece drawn up by lozfoe. Sonic and Tails throw a party, with the blue blur about to scoff some birthday cake. Tails looks like he’s having a mad time as well, even if it does look like his temperature’s being taken. A cute piece of artwork, and really appreciated lozfoe, thanks!

The second thing we got in our mailbox was this short video from FTA, one of the chaps behind Find the Computer Room. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Shadow all opine on their favourite Sonic fansites. Apparently, this place is Sonic’s #1 site to chill out at. That’s quite some praise, coming from the ‘hog himself. Is it your favourite too?

TSS’ 10th Anniversary Celebrations!

Today’s the day! The Sonic Stadium is now a whopping ten years old, and to celebrate we’re dedicating a whole week’s worth of information, media and stories from the website’s own history vaults! Stick around for those, including back catalogue updates (at laaaaaaaaast!) and some real archive building.

You might have also noticed by now that the site has had a redesign. Call it a new birthday suit as it enters its terrible teens. Site sections have now been incorporated into a menu just below the banner up there, and thanks to some wicked coding wizardry from Bmn the sections react to rollovers. As I said before, we’ll be working on getting some content up to fill up this new layout right away.

The banners themselves have been made especially for TSS’ big 1-0. Roarey Raccoon and syaming-li have both contributed awesome images to decorate the site with as we metaphorically bang lots of pots and pans about our age.

Another change is in the topbar, above the banner. Now you can see a live ticker of the songs and LiVECASTs that are airing on SEGASonic Radio. Take a look now. Go on. That’s what’s playing right now. It’s a good song, isn’t it? Click the green icon to launch a popup window that will allow you to listen to the station and chat with friends at the same time. Noice.

Sidebars will be customised for each section of the website – the functionality of this is still being ironed out, so be aware that we’re updating the design on the right hand side all the time to make it look much cooler. If you have any ideas for quicklinks that you want to see on the sidebar in a particular section – latest updates to game pages, most commented on articles, that sort of thing – then do get in touch.

TSS Review: Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Episode 1


Sonic 4, then. Hyped as the true return to 2D form for the blue blur, unleashed at last upon the fanbase after a year-long wait that was riddled with delays and controversy. Does it live up to its promise? Is it worth your hard-earned Sonic wonga? Read on and find out, in TSS’ Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 review.

Premise

There’s really nothing to say when it comes to the game’s premise – it follows the formula of the classic games to the letter, seeing Sonic race through levels to rescue his animal friends from Dr. Eggman’s capture. As it continues on from Sonic 3 & Knuckles, there’s something of a bare bones plot – the evil doc, still smarting after the chaos that ensued on the Death Egg, is trying once more to bury the planet with his league of robot badniks. Of course, with the recession and everything, he’s on the back foot, forced to recycle only the best of the baddies from past games. Obviously, Sonic’s having none of it.

With no cutscenes or any other guff to endure in-between levels, Sonic 4 does a great job of keeping the focus on what really matters – 2D platforming and fast-paced action. There’s a lot to be said about games that just let you get on with the game and just play – and Sonic the Hedgehog is such an accessible game that jumping in is a total cinch.

JUDGEMENT: Thumbs Up
FAVOURITE SCENE: As it should be – the ending sequence.

Presentation

Sonic 4 is simply gorgeous. SEGA has brought the 2D games bang-up to present-day, and although the 16-bit sprites had a bit more charm to them, you’ll still be able to appreciate the detailed locales and intricate designs implemented here. With 3D models, special effects such as card-based paths looping in and out of the screen, and traditional items such as pinball bumpers and loop-de-loops covered in foliage, Sonic 4 does what the original Sonic the Hedgehog did in 1991 – create a graphical presentation that can truly wow kids.

All that being said, there’s something of an obvious pattern when it comes to the design of Sonic 4 – it’s not entirely original. In fact, it could be argued that it’s not original at all. Each of the four major zones (and the concept of the Special Stages) are re-imaginations of levels already seen in the original Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The multi-tiered and engaging level design helps break the argument that this is but a mere rehash, but it is fair to say that this initial episode does feel more like an homage rather than a true sequel. Maybe some fresh ideas for the next episode, SEGA?

JUDGEMENT: Thumbs Up
FAVOURITE BIT:

Sound

When you think of the music behind classic Mega Drive Sonic games, one of the most distinctive elements you would pick out would be Masato Nakamura’s deft use of percussion. Jun Senoue, a veteran who has been involved with the series’ soundtrack ever since Sonic 3, has tried to replicate that to mixed success. Oftentimes the background music sounds like there’s a 16-bit woodpecker knocking against your head. At other times, tunes are barely memorable – try humming a Sonic 4 song two hours after playing it.

There are some blinding gems that show Senoue’s skill, like the pumping theme to Mad Gear or the absolutely delightful Act 3 music to Splash Hill Zone. But we all know what the man’s capable of when given a Mega Drive – 1996’s Sonic 3D Flickies’ Island is testament to that. Ultimately, I can see exactly what Senoue was going for here – it’s just a shame that the overall result is a bit hit-and-miss.

JUDGEMENT: Thumbs Down

Gameplay

This really is the heart of the debate – whether you rate Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 as a good or bad game depends entirely on what you perceive the game to be (ignoring SEGA’s constant marketing natter about ‘back to the classics, fo’ real homes’). Do you focus more on what the game should be, or what it really is? Here’s my take – Sonic 4 is a lot of fun. With some caveats.

When you start playing the game, a lot of the hangups in the physics department appear glaringly obvious – and if they don’t, then you’ll be blitzing through the first few stages thinking subconsciously that something isn’t right with this picture. As it turns out, Sonic Team (for whatever reason) did not decide to build on the Mega Drive codebase but instead created as close enough a replication as it could. For some, the bits it got wrong are a deal-breaker.

Jump to the side and let go of the analogue stick/D-pad, and rather than letting momentum take its course, Sonic stops moving and drops in a vertical line. Closer inspection shows that the same is true for other midair activities, such as being shot out of a cannon. Elsewhere, the game doesn’t seem to encourage the use of the spin attack because every time you use it, you slow to a crawl. Even on the Casino Street half-pipes – where in classic Sonic games, spin-attacking would actually make you go faster than running, the opposite is true in Sonic 4. For those used to the physics of the originals, it’s baffling.

But if you stick with the game, you’ll get used to those setbacks and enjoy the game for the short, enjoyable ride it otherwise provides. Running around curves and bouncing off of badniks really takes you back to those halcyon days sitting in front of a Mega Drive as a kid. The level design – multiple tiers and with several routes for time-attacking – is a triumph compared to those found in recent 2D Sonics.

And the sole addition to the blue blur’s attack roster, the homing attack, is far from a cheap get-out-of-jail-free card, but instead offers access to alternate paths and feels just as natural as a classic power-up should. Sonic 4 is a game that divides opinion like no other – just as I feel there is a lot of fun and gameplay worth to the game despite its setbacks, others may feel that the physics is enough to fail the game entirely. The strange thing is, both opinions are correct.

JUDGEMENT: Thumbs Up (Your Mileage May Vary)
FAVOURITE PART: Running like a madman to escape the chaos in Mad Gear Act 3.

Longevity

You won’t really get a lot of bang for your buck here – you’re buying entirely into the nostalgia trip that you may (or may not) receive when Sonic 4: Episode 1 first loads up. To compare the number of zones to past Mega Drive games is silly – Sonic the Hedgehog came out in 1991 with six zones for around £40. When you consider you’re only losing two for a tenner that’s not so bad.

What can’t be argued is that you can easily beat Sonic 4: Episode 1 in the space of an hour or so (minus chaos emeralds – it will take you an extra couple of hours to grab them). When there are other premium games on downloadable services commanding at least four times that for about £2 less, you start to ask a question or two as to whether the longevity is value for money. It will be interesting to see how that might change if it has the ability to ‘lock on’ with future episodes, however.

JUDGEMENT: Thumbs Down
FAVOURITE TIME-WASTER: Time-attacking – the homing attack has some nice uses in speed running.

The Sonic Stadium’s 10th Anniversary Month!

Did you know that The Sonic Stadium has been around for nearly ten years? TEN! It only seems like yesterday that I was hosting this humble little website on an Angelfire free 20MB account, nursing it through its toddler years. Now it means that TSS is about to enter its terrible teens – expect some tantrums, unkempt hairstyles and accusations that I ‘just don’t understand’ it.

If I was any kind of responsible parent, I would be making sure it doesn’t get led astray and not to go too wild on the celebrations. But I’m 25, and a party animal – so I want to throw the biggest, meanest party for your favourite Sonic site that there ever was. All month long.

I’ve collected snapshots of every single site design this place has been through since its inception – plus a few bonus designs that I have in the vault that have never seen the light of day. A site redesign will be hitting to bring the place bang up to date. Giveaways will be had, and memories from TSS’ early years shared. The first episode of Sonic 4 will be coming out (I’m sure SEGA arranged it to be released in time for our 10th ;)). The staff here will no doubt recall their times at the site, and there are many anecdotes I can share, let me tell you.

I want you to join in the fun with us, though! TSS 10th: Guess Who We’re Interviewing? [UPDATE]

Welcome to October. On the 24th of this month, this humble website will be ten years old. And what better way to celebrate that special anniversary than having the once-in-a-lifetime chance to sit down and chat to one of the men that made Sonic the Hedgehog – and in effect, this website – a reality.

Let me do my best Rolf Harris impression: “Can you guess who it is yet?”

That’s right. None other than Yuji Naka, one of the most inspirational developers to come out of Japan. During his time at Sonic Team, he was constantly referred to as Sega’s version of Nintendo’s own Shigeru Miyamoto. Alongside creating the physics and backbone of the Sonic the Hedgehog gameplay, Naka-san is also the mastermind behind NiGHTS Into Dreams, Burning Rangers, Phantasy Star Online and Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg.

He is in London right now, promoting the UK release of his latest work, Ivy The Kiwi? On Monday, I will be sitting right next to him to chat about the game, and all things Sonic besides (talk about dream come true).

If you have a burning question that you’ve always wanted to ask Naka-san – about Sonic, his work at Prope, Ivy The Kiwi?, anything – here’s your chance! Sonic Colours: TSS Info Page Live

Today’s been a good day for Sonic Colours information. Basically, information from an advance preview code has the green light to be made public from this week onwards – and I was one of the lucky few to have played it for an extended period of time. For a detailed preview of my experience, you’ll have to check SPOnG (it’ll be worth it, trust me – it should be live Tuesday morning), but for all the little bits of details inbetween, there’s the new TSS Sonic Colours Info Page, which has just gone live.

Every now and then, I’ll be trickling new details into this page from my play experiences – story elements (no spoilers), enemies, moves, Wisp powers and level mechanics. The reason it’s a bit thin right now (although there’s still some interesting tidbits that you likely didn’t know before, including badnik information) is because the site has been going pretty slow today, so I apologise for that.

AAUK Explains Summer of Sonic Departure

Summer of Sonic co-organiser and webmaster of Sonic Wrecks, Kevin ‘ArchAngelUK’ Eva, has written a heartfelt open letter to the Sonic fanbase explaining his departure from leading the annual convention. Exhaustion, funds and career aspirations are all cited as reasons for the initial announcement on Twitter some weeks ago.

“[The] truth is all these years of being battered and battering myself with endlessly long hours for SOS I’ve just reached a limit and had enough,” writes AAUK in a statement on Sonic Wrecks. As an integral member of SEGA Europe’s Community Team, AAUK’s role in co-organising the Summer of Sonic has been nothing short of an extremely important one, arranging internal budgets and pitching the concept of the event to Brand Managers and other executives in the company.

Such campaigning is starting to bear fruit, as AAUK mentions the sudden interest from key members of SEGA Europe management during the execution of this year’s well-recieved convention. “I think you simply won’t need me by [2012],” AAUK writes, “Some SEGA/Sonic high-ups had actually been in the [2010] venue and already offered much more help than I got this year in securing wonders for you.”

Another reason is the inability to afford the costs of setup. AAUK contributes within the region of £500-1000 of his own money each year into the Summer of Sonic – while other members of the organisation staff also contribute a similar number, since 2008 the contributions AAUK has had to make has resulted in some “real financial headaches… I’m not THAT well off ya know and I’ve a family I need to take care of.

“I kinda hope by then I might’ve moved either onwards or upwards by the time people start thinking of an SOS12,” AAUK continues. “I don’t want to be Sonic Community Manager forever, I actually think I could contribute to the brand higher up.” Following this, he mentions his final and possibly saddest reason for leaving his role behind – the fact that he has simply lost the love for the event.

AAUK stresses that he is not exactly leaving the fanbase – “at least not yet.” Before parting with the announcement of a few final surprises to come for the event, the Community Manager finishes with thanks to “all the Summer Of Sonic staff who’ve helped so magnificently and magnanimously over the years – you’re all awesome sauce incarnate,” along with “all those who’ve come to SOS over the years and hey its not over yet – we’re just reaching the end of this particular chapter.”

Svend ‘Dreadknux’ Joscelyne: Speaking personally, as the creator and co-organiser of the event as well as a personal friend, I know that the Summer of Sonic event would never have become a reality without the knowledge, passion and dedication that AAUK has put into this project over the years. I may be so bold as to say that he is truly unaware of just how much respect and acknowledgement he has earned from everyone in the Sonic community for this convention, and everything he has worked for and achieved besides in his role as Sega Community Manager.

Ultimately his health, happiness and family come before anything else, and I would not have it any other way. He leaves the role knowing that he is directly responsible for helping create an event that touches so many Sonic fans’ hearts today. The Sonic Stadium, the Summer of Sonic attendees and the Sonic community at large salutes you, dude. All the best in your future Sonic (and non-Sonic) related endeavours.

Wisp Me Away: UK Winners, More To Give Away!

You might remember that we staged a Wisp Me Away contest, where you could win a little plush toy of one of the sentient alien beings in Sonic Colours. The US winners have already been announced, but you’re probably wondering what’s happening to the UK winners. Well, for that I have some good news and some bad news.

Mind the Dust / Advance Design Alert!

Hey everyone! In between my real life work, socialising and co-organising the Summer of Sonic with ArchAngelUK of Sonic Wrecks (which went absolutely brilliantly, by the way, despite mishaps – you can check it all out on the official website, or check back on TSS for reposts) I’ve not had a lot of time to dedicate to you guys. The visitors of The Sonic Stadium, where it all begun.

Well don’t worry, I’ve not forgotten about you guys – although some of the editorial is done by some awesome members of the community, I’ve always had my head buried around the back of the site, tinkering with this and that. After ten years, you’d probably know me by now – never sitting on one idea at a time. And with TSS’ 10th Anniversary just around the corner (24th October) I’m making some preparations that will ensure we have an awesome time all over the Network.

First off, this post serves as a heads-up, in more ways than one – I will be doing some rather odd things to the site over the course of the next week or two. And that will occur across the whole TSS Network – TSS, SEGASonic Radio, Sonic Showcase Network and The Sonic Show will all seem a bit odd on occasion. Date Set for Summer of Sonic 2011

More than 800 people enjoyed the Summer of Sonic 2010 on Saturday, which took place in Shepherd’s Bush and featured the first public demos of Sonic Colours, Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 and an exclusive live performance from Crush 40.

At the end of the packed day, Svend ‘Dreadknux’ Joscelyne and Kevin ‘ArchAngelUK’ Eva took to the stage to formally announce the date of next year’s Summer of Sonic.

Those who wish to attend SoS 2011 will need to book their holidays for the 25th June 2011, the Saturday following Sonic the Hedgehog’s 20th Anniversary. After an intimate and exciting gig from Jun Senoue and Johnny Gioeli – only their second time playing together live, and the first outside of Japan – attendees were left astounded and wondering exactly how things can be topped for next year’s convention.

Feedback from visitors were mostly positive, with the lack of air conditioning in the venue not fazing Sonic fans eager to play games, watch Crush 40 and meet new friends. Unprecedented queues for Sonic 4, Sonic Colours and Crush 40 signings meant that there was some confusion in the venue, coupled with long waiting times.

Besides these drawbacks – which the team have taken on board to fix next year – the day went largely without a hitch, despite some issues with the venue and an alleged case of stolen equipment worth £3000 in total. Police are investigating the situation, after Roareye Black’s Sony Vaio laptop, netbook and HD camcorder went missing the very morning of the Summer of Sonic 2010 convention.

Summer of Sonic Advance Registration Opens

Those chomping at the bit to attend the Summer of Sonic 2010 convention can now register for an advance ticket from the event’s website. The benefits of doing so include fast-tracking of your entry, and exclusive entry for the first hour of the convention – doormen will only accept valid, printed-off tickets during this time.

Eager con-goers should visit http://register.summerofsonic.com/ and fill in their details. Once they do that, their registration will be processed and, if successful, a message will be sent out informing them of their unique ID and printable ticket. The Summer of Sonic website notes that entry will be denied for anyone modifying their ticket in any way.

In past years, advance registration has opened much earlier than the launch for the 2010 event. Delays in finalising the Terms and Conditions have meant that potential attendees couldn’t sign up until the terms were completed. The Terms and Conditions are important because every visitor must read and agree to these terms before being allowed entry.

There are many reasons for attending the Summer of Sonic 2010 convention this year – Crush 40, Nigel Dobbyn, Sonic 4, and free goodies are just some of the incentives already-announced, with more to come over the next few days.

Sonic 4 Video Contest: Final Polls Open

The polls for the Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Video Contest has opened today, with twenty fans from the UK and North America vying for a chance at one of two Grand Prizes – a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Tokyo, with the opportunity to meet Sonic Team.

Ten of the best videos from the UK and ten from North America were placed into two separate polls, with fans needing the support of the community to vote for their favourite to win. Votes can be placed once per day, until the contest’s close on the 27th July.

Adam ‘T-Bird’ Tuff and Svend ‘Dreadknux’ Joscelyne’s entries for the contest have been chosen as finalists in the UK final 10. Adam’s entry features the merch-crazy fan enjoying a sunny day with university friends as he paints a Sonic portrait, while Svend’s is a psuedo-documentary on his life as a Sonic the Hedgehog fan.

Rumour: Jason Griffith Leaving Sonic Role?

Jason Griffith could be leaving his post as the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog. That’s the rumour that has hit the Sonic community today, following an admission from the voice actor that he is currently not voicing the blue blur in the upcoming Sonic Colours.

Tipster ‘XD375’ told The Sonic Stadium of the revelation after having made contact with two anonymous sources close to the matter. They both suggested that “a new voice” would be involved in the Sonic franchise going forward. A message from Griffith’s Facebook profile has confirmed his lack of involvement;

Thanks for sending [a video of Sonic Colours]. Not sure who is voicing Sonic, unfortunately, so I can’t really say. Also, we have all signed NDA’s in the past, so I don’t really “speak up” on a lot of things involving SEGA.

The future of the roles of Tails, Knuckles and other lead characters were unknown, but it was revealed that Mike Pollock would continue his work as Dr. Eggman. When contacted by SSMB user ‘Crash’, Pollock declined to comment, adding that “I can’t discuss anything that’s not officially released yet, so please get back to me after [the game] hits the streets.”

Speculation of a change-up of the current Sonic voice-over cast sparked up shortly after ArchAngelUK spoke of an announcement to be made on Thursday, concerning the franchise as a whole. While it would not necessarily affect the games, it was suggested that the news would involve an element of the games to some degree. The subject of voice acting would certainly fit that bill.

The future of Griffith’s tenure as Sonic the Hedgehog is currently unknown. While his response above largely hints at a leave of the character, it is equally likely that this is a one-off – that Sega is undecided whether Sonic should have a full speaking role in Sonic Colours at all. If we get any clarifications regarding this rumour, we will be the first to let you know.

Summer of Sonic 2010 Intended Venue Revealed

Heads up! The Summer of Sonic website has revealed the intended location for this year’s convention. Following the announcement some months ago that the venue would be situated in London, attendees now know to head to Shepherd’s Bush for The Pavilion, a 1000-people strong space that offers a huge opportunity for some Sonic-based fun!

The website also provides a notice explaining the reason behind the venue’s delayed announcement. From the post:

“Various factors come into play when it comes to hiring a professional venue for an event – there’s signing of contracts, adding of accounts, and various clauses that need to be discussed at length before a deal between parties can be made final. Last year… we went through a similar process to this year to lock down the Truman Brewery. The fact that we have changed our venue for 2010 means all of that background work had to be done again.”

So there you have it. But, you already booked your hotels and flights and travel months ago anyway, right? So the delayed announcement is something of a moot point. As it happens, Shepherd’s Bush Tube station – one of the closest to the venue – is simple to get to on the Central (red) line on the London Underground map. A Google map location can be found here.

Summer of Sonic 2010 Website Launches

The new website for the Summer of Sonic convention has opened to the public, and already fans have started posting comments detailing their excited interest in the event. The launch of the website means that over the next few weeks, some exciting reveals and detailed information on the day’s activities will be trickled out ahead of the event, scheduled for the 7th August 2010.

Hotly tipped to be revealed first is the venue of the convention, which has been kept a secret up until now because of continuing negotiations. As it was confirmed to be hosted in London several months ago however, some attendees’ travelling arrangements have already been booked.

Past Summer of Sonic conventions have seen big celebrity guests appear – including composer Richard Jacques, singers TJ Davis and Bentley Jones, comic artists Nigel Kitching and Nigel Dobbyn and Sumo Digital. The Spin: The Folly of the Sonic Fan

It sounds totally cliche for a journalist to start a Sonic-related article in this manner, but Sonic fans like myself have understandably had plenty to moan about in this past decade. I don’t need to make a list, you know the drill. But 2006 was a long time ago. Now it’s 2010, and it seems like the fanbase at large is actively trying to pick a fight every five minutes. The target? Take your pick – Sega for not getting it, Sonic Team for losing it, Bentley Jones for having a life, Dimps for screwing up 2D (despite actually being good)… even fellow fans and fansites. It’s slightly ridiculous.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Announced For ‘Late 2010,’ iPhone Confirmed

Sega has announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 will be hitting digital distribution platforms in the “latter half of 2010,” with the “added development” time spent on the ‘tuning’ and ‘balancing’ of the game. While no release date has been announced officially, the use of wording in the company’s statement implies an internal delay.

A press release went live today, officially confirming that Sonic 4 will also be released on Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch products. The game will be available via the App Store. One of Sega’s European arms has also released a video containing Splash Hill gameplay, watch it below.

This video will be shown in a new episode of GameSpot’s On The Spot feature, which will see Sega America community manager RubyEclipse to discuss the announcement. It will be aired in an hour’s time.

“SEGA is incredibly happy at the overwhelmingly positive response to Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode I  from both press and fans around the world, and wants to ensure that we’re delivering the best Sonic experience possible,” reads the official statement, which was also posted on Sega’s Blognik. “With this dedication to quality and the Sonic experience in mind, SEGA has decided to extend the development of the game, and will now release Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode I in the latter half of 2010.

“The additional time will allow the Development Team to focus on ensuring overall high-quality throughout the game by continuing to tune, balance, and maintain the kind of polish that an important title like this demands, and ultimately providing fans with an unrivalled classic Sonic feel.”

Joint-Exclusive: Sonic 4 Blowout Coming This Week

Mark your calendars for Thursday the 20th May. On this date, Sega will be revealing a lot of new information regarding Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1.

And it won’t be anything to sniff at either – some “very big” and “very good” news will be announced by way of a press release, which will go live in the evening (UK time – morning in the US).

After a successful online PR push that involved community challenges and badnik reveals, Sega suddenly went quiet about Sonic 4 when leaks started to flood the internet. A source at the company told us that the information revealed via Thursday’s press release will explain the reason for the “last couple month’s blackout” on updates.

In the meantime, the world continues to be excited (or afraid) of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1. For what it’s worth, we think it’s going to absolutely rock. Roll on Thursday! Stay tuned to The Sonic Stadium for the latest news!

The Sonic Stadium Featured On 1UP

As I prepare for TSS’ 10th Anniversary (24th October), it’s always nice to see other people celebrate the length of our existence too. Surprisingly enough, one of those outlets happened to be a major gaming website. The latest in 1UP’s Fan’s View series focused on long-standing gaming fansites, and yours truly was asked to represent the Sonic side of things.

Naturally, I jumped at the chance to answer questions about The Sonic Stadium, and you can read up on what I said – and look at other cool fansites for other franchises that have stood the test of time – by clicking here.
