A Trio of Fan Works to Look Out For: Sonic Gaiden, Sonic Studio & Project Hero

The world of Sonic fan game development never rests. What with annual Hacking Contests, Amateur Game Expos (plus Really Amateur Game Expos), and the odd flash of brilliance catching the Internet’s attention, these games not only help us pass the time between the major official releases from SEGA, some even push the boundaries of the unwritten rulebook of Sonic game design in ways we can only dream of. Sonic and Friends Swap Voices and More in this Quirky Fan Animation

So it’s no secret that Sonic has a whole cavalcade of friends built up across his history, and with most bearing a distinct and unique voice, you’d typically be able to recognize each one and discern who’s who just from the sound alone. However, if their voices were to switch around, like hearing the charming and sweet Cream the Rabbit talking in Big the Cat’s velvet tones, well… things can get weird really, really fast.

In this BrainstormAlex-animated short directed by longtime Sonic community member Loor101, what happens is just that when Tails’ latest gadget goes wrong when Eggman intervenes!

Check it out below.

Sonic Mania Plus Leaked On PS4!

Out of respect for the developers, we will not be posting major details regarding the spoilers that have been discovered from this leak.

Following reports on our forums, it would appear that Sonic Mania Plus got accidentally leaked onto the Playstation Network just over an hour ago.

It seems that someone accidentally put an update file onto the public side of the network and if you were using your PS4 at the time, had Mania installed on your system and had automatic updates turned on, the console downloaded what appears to be a new ‘test build’ of the game which includes a large portion of the Mania Plus update.

We’re going to keep the big spoilers out of this update, but reports indicate that there have been significant changes; such as the level design as well as some new transitions between the levels.

Other changes noted are quite major and from last time a lot of you requested that we don’t include spoilers unless they are very clearly marked… So if you are curious to see them, check out the topic on our forums, the spoilers start instantly when you click the link, so this is your last chance to turn back.

Sega Announces SEGA AGES Line of Classic Games for Switch

Sega just announced at the Sega Fes 2018 event in Japan that they will be doing essentially a repeat of the Sega 3D Classics line on 3DS, but now on Switch. Just like on 3DS, these classic games will be brought to Switch by M2.

Sega: Huge Announcement Tomorrow

Sega’s Japanese fan event Sega Fes is set to begin this weekend and out of nowhere the US and EU Sega twitter accounts just tweeted the following.

https://twitter.com/SEGA_Europe/status/984793771870126081

Whilst this could be anything Sega related, we here at TSS have noticed a number of Japanese Social Media accounts have also been tweeting hints at Sonic themed announcements for various consumer goods all day.

This does not outright confirm that the announcement is specifically for a Sonic related item, but it does certainly suggest it might be or that Sega Fes will have a number of Sonic related announcements at the event. Furthermore, for both Sega of America and Sega Europe to tweet about this, it would have to be something major that affects the global Sega Brand. Which would suggest it’s either Sonic or Yakuza.

We’ll update this with details of said announcement and live-stream links as we get them.

The EU Sega Store Opens

After 5 months of waiting, Sega have finally opened an online store for the EU. However unlike the US store the items on the EU side are very different compared to the US counterparts.

Every single item is a customised product.

Going under the title ‘Sega By Me’ EU shoppers have the chance to purchase notebooks and mugs with the phrase ‘customise here’ written on them. So you can write your own message and have it printed on the notebook cover or the mug to personalise the item.

Whilst some people might enjoy this, some collectors might be disappointed to discover that there appears at this time to be no Sonic Mania Adventures merchandise, none of the exclusive 25th Anniversary Tails merch is on the site, in fact, nothing that’s on the current Sega Store is on here, it’s completely customised products.

We’ll let you know if this changes or if there are any developments.

Sonic Generations Finally Hits Xbox One Backward Compatibility

About friggin’ time!

Microsoft held their second episode of Inside Xbox yesterday, in which they share a behind-the-scenes look at the company’s inner workings, and today’s livestream held a special announcement regarding backward compatibility on Xbox One.

The gaming giant revealed that a handful of backward compatible Xbox 360 games will become Xbox One X-enhanced, a beefy update through which last-gen titles receive a substantial performance boost on the most powerful home console on the market, after the presentation. Among them is none other than Sonic Generations, which also means that the 20th anniversary title celebrating Sonic’s history has also been finally retrofitted for the Xbox One family of systems as of today!

Episode 2 of Inside Xbox also revealed a ton of new original Xbox games being added to the backward compatible library, including SEGA’s own Panzer Dragoon Orta.

Now that leaves only Sonic Unleashed and Sonic ’06 as the remaining mainline Sonic games to become Xbox One backward compatible… I’ll certainly be keeping my fingers crossed.

TSS Review: Genesis of a Hero (Archie)

More like Revelations than Genesis in hindsight. IDW are set to release their new comic in just a few days from now. But as most of you know, before IDW there were the Archie Sonic comics. Spanning 290 issues, it lasted an eventful 24 years before it met its end in December 2016. To celebrate the passing of the torch from one company to another, I will be reviewing the entirety of Genesis of a Hero (AStH#288 – AStH#291), the last arc of the book.
