Olympic Winter Games Already Slashed To £18.99

MCV is reporting that Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is the latest victim of supermarket price-cutting, with Morrison’s selling the Wii sports mashup for only £18.99 until Sunday. That’s a discount of over 50%, and a counter to Sainsbury’s free pack-in of the game with new Wii consoles.

Other games that have fallen victim to supermarket price cutting include EA’s FIFA 10 and Codemaster’s Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. The UK games industry has rallied against the increasing trend, calling it ‘worrying’. In the case of Mario and Sonic, although it can be argued that this price drop will get the game into more people’s hands, there’s no real reason to doubt that people would have bought this title at full price anyway. Regardless, it results in less money returned to the developer – money that, in a recession, publishers are finding hard to come by.

UPDATE: GAME & Gamestation Reveal M&S Pre-order Gifts

UPDATE 2: My copies of both versions have arrived from HMV via Royal Mail with 2 of the t-shirts and both are size Small. Reports have come in of people getting otehr sizes delivered. It seems HMV are just sending out random sizes. Awful way of doing things but even if you dont get your size they still make good collectors items.

UPDATE: TSS has learnt that HMV accept orders outside of the UK and ship via air mail so if you live overseas and fancy HMV’s exclusive t-shirt then get your pre-orders in. Remember though, Wii’s are region locked so PAL copies won’t work on U.S. consoles. The DS is region-free though.

New M&S at the Olympic Winter Games screenshots

MASATOWG_Wii_05-08-09

SEGA have released some new screenshots for both Wii and DS versions of upcoming title Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. In the screenshots we can see new HUD bits in both versions and some on-screen Wii Remote instructions displaying how the motion controls will work in the Wii version. Graphics are looking to be some of the best we’ve seen on the Wii.

In other sightings, Nintendo fans will be happy to learn that the course seen in the above screenshot is revealed in one screenshot to be none other than Mario Circuit from the famous Mario Kart series as has been speculated since the course was first revealed.

MASATOWG_DS_05-08-09

The new images of the DS version showcases more of its events too like the bobsleigh, skiing and snowboarding. It looks like the bobsleigh will control with the D-pad and buttons if the on screen controls in a screenshot of Metal Sonic and DK getting their bobsleigh started is anything to go by. New HUD displays reveal a gauge will play a part in the bobsleigh event too.

Snowboarding has also gained a gauge and items to attack your opponents with much like in the Dream Race event in the first DS game. Also like the first DS game SEGA aren’t holding back in the graphics department as they again look to be pushing the DS to its limits to make another beautiful looking game.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games will be released for Wii & DS October 16th in the UK and October 13th in the U.S. Check out more info and media at the Official Site.

Project Mettrix Becomes First Sonic Fangame On Wii

blz-exampleStealth is the master of bomb-dropping.  To list a few, he has ported Tweaker’s Sonic 1 Megamix hack to the SEGA CD, tricked morons with news tips, and released a port of Sonic 1 for the Game Boy Advance that doesn’t suck.  At this year’s SAGE though, Stealth has outdone himself.  His long-time project, Sonic: Project Mettrix, has been successfully been ported to the Nintendo Wii and Sony Playstation Portable.

Project Mettrix uses Stealth’s “E02 Engine,” a multi-platform game development tool for 2D games.  Mettrix has been around for quite some time, but it is really flourishing with the E02 treatment.  Now, you can play and create custom levels for Mettrix on your Wii and PSP.

Those with homebrew enabled Wiis should download this game right away and experience this momentous occasion.

Naka’s Prope Releases “Let’s Tap” and “Let’s Catch”

A double dose of simplicity hits the Wii today in North America with the retail and download releases of Prope’s “Let’s Tap” and “Let’s Catch.”  “Let’s Tap” is going at a $29.99 price tag, while “Catch” is worth 1,000 Nintendo Points on WiiWare.  A European release date has yet to be announced for either title, as many outlets list it as “Summer 2009” or “To Be Announced.”  Check out some video of the two titles below:

More New M&SATOWG Screens, Silver Confirmed

msatowg_wii_silver_confirmed
Some more new screenshots of both the Wii and DS versions of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games have appeared from E3 on Sonic fansite Planete Sonic. The most interesting of the screens is the above screenshot(click to go large) of Tails skiing in what looks like one of the Dream Events but what is so interesting you ask? Eagle eyed SSMB Member speedfreak has pointed out a Silver The Hedgehog icon flag among the other character icon flags in the background confirming him to be a playable character in this game.

Silver was discovered to be a playable character in the Wii version of the last game at one point in development when leftover data was discovered in the final game so it’s no surprise they would add him in to this title. We’ll keep an eye open for any further media/info on this game as it happens.

TSS REVIEW: Sonic and the Black Knight

One of the first things you can do in Sonic and the Black Knight is view a slide show gallery of artwork, created by blue blur fans around the world. Almost all of them recount classic moments in the franchise’s history within Sonic CD, Sonic and Knuckles and Sonic Adventure 2 among others. It’s a bittersweet irony really, given that the new-age Sonic Team – a studio that’s opening their hearts and willing to do good like an eager puppy – are willing to embrace fan input where it’s positive, yet block out complaints about rushed developments, poor gameplay mechanics and passionless level design and counter with more of the same. Get ’em while they’re hot! Sonic and the Black Knight Character Sheets!

sonicb

Earlier today ‘Hero of legend‘ reported to TSS with a most intriguing link leading to a Nintendo fan-site named ‘WiiNintendo.net.‘ It appears the site has managed to get a hold of some exclusive character model sheets from the upcoming ‘Sonic and the Black Knight’ title currently in development exclusively for the Nintendo Wii.
percival

The character model sheets show off some nifty angle shots of Sonic (as himself), Knuckles (as Sir Gawain), Shadow (as Sir Lancelot) and finally Blaze (as Percival.) Technically the first we’ve seen of Blaze in the game. The model sheets show off her new re-design complete with an armoured mask, similar to that of Gawain and Lancelot’s. Keep in mind all of these character models are taken from the CG Cut Scene areas of Sonic and the Black Knight. TSS seriously doubt’s you’re going to be seeing models as detailed as that in-game.

It’s still unclear how WiiNintendo managed to get their hands on the character model sheets, but what’s even more interesting is a thirty second video showcasing all the characters present, of which has been uploaded to the Nintendo themed websites Youtube account.

You can check out the character model sheets here and the video showcase of all four characters at Youtube here. Just look at those Knights spin!

UPDATE: Unfortunately, it appears that both the images and video have disappeared from the Internet. Either WiiNintendo decided to remove the models on their own accord or with a little encouragement from SEGA. Fear not though disheartened reader, as you can still view all of the images in the SSMB forum topic right here.

See? I told you to get them while they’re hot. Now they’re all gone. Huge thanks to the sexiest of all Sheza’s for the heads up!

Box Art: Sonic und der Schwarze Ritter!

Enjoy these latest high quality images of Sonic and the Black Knight’s PAL box artwork, fresh from SEGA themselves. Taking a note from the book of Sonic and the Secret Rings, it seems that each territory’s title will be translated for their respective audience. We have images of the German (which once again always manages to sound cooler than the English one), Spanish and Australian packshots, but no UK one. Which is a bit odd.

We’ve got these in maximum resolution, so if you want a massive Schwarze then simply click on the images above, and select ‘Full Size’ to receive your prize.

Let’s Go To The City With Sonic Town Tunes & Patterns

Are you cool like me in getting a copy of Animal Crossing: City Folk (or Let’s Go to the City for some of you) for Christmas? If so, you must have considered letting your Sonic fanboyism spill into the user created aspects of the game. The Sonic Stadium is here to help, by providing you some catchy town tunes and patterns to design at the Abel Sister’s shop.

When it comes to some town tunage, your best resource is the database at Animal Crossing Community. If you simply search “Sonic,” you can get 85 Sonic songs, even some from Sonic Unleashed, like the Rooftop theme at Spagonia. Green Hill shows up a few times, along with other classic themes, but “Open Your Heart,” “Live and Learn,” and songs from Sonic X are also in the database. My personal favorite town tunes are the “Sonic the Fighters” theme and “Toot Toot Sonic Warrior.”

As for patterns, the Animal Crossing Community is the first place to go for some amazing Sonic patterns.  The site has 1,421 patterns to choose from and most of them are really awesome and detailed, like ones featuring those wicked Sonic Battle sprites.  The site “Animal Crossing Ahead” has about 200 Sonic related patterns for you to gawk at and use. Click here to head on over to the Sonic pattern page at Animal Crossing Ahead.

Green Hill Zone - an old standby

With these links, you should be well-equipped to start a Sonic fashion trend in your town (which is probably named either “Pooptown,” “Buttville,” or “St. Fart” from my estimation).  If you have an awesome pattern or song for Animal Crossing and you would like to share it with us at TSS, drop me a PM and I’ll totally:

a) Put it in my town

b) Fan Spotlight it

New Sonic and the Black Knight artwork and screens

Nintendo fan site Nintendo Everything have managed to nab some new screens and artwork of upcoming Nintendo Wii game Sonic and the Black Knight. The images look a little grainy as if they’ve been scanned from a magazine but no magazine is mentioned in the sites post. Most of the screens we’ve already seen but a couple are new and there’s also some artwork of the big bad wolf Black Knight riding horse-back, we’re yet to find out the horse’s name though but for now I’ll call him Dreadagus since he’s dark and he looks as bad ass as Dreadknux Pegasus came to mind.

Another screenshot of Sonic outside of a dark town with a fiery sky looks like possible artwork but Sonic’s model looks like the in-game model so I’ll let you be the judge on wether that is art or in-game screenshot.

You can check out all of the images here

UPDATE: I have been informed that these images are from the latest issue of Nintendo Power, thanks to SSMB Member: Hero of legend

Sonic and the Black Knight Screens Make You Say ‘Ni’

“So hey, about Sonic Unleashed…” – What you say? Sonic Unleashed? That game is sooo last week. Let’s say we focus on something a bit more next year, girlfriend? Luckily SEGA Europe’s been sending out some screenshots of Sonic and the Black Knight for the Wii so we can be next year… in 2008. Yeah, we’re rocking that DeLorean.

Sonic and the Black Knight is the continuation of the ‘Storybook’ series of the franchise that was kicked off with Sonic and the Secret Rings on the Wii. So we’ll treat it as the spinoff that it is and not facepalm ourselves into the ground. That would be impolite. There’s not an awful lot going on in these screenshots, and they’ve appeared on other sites before, but it’s nice to see that the game still exists, especially since a lot of you are going to have your artwork stashed onto it.

Enjoy these screens, a few of which are in ‘Extreeeeeeme’ blurrovision, and some which feature a familiar red knight. Hm, his face is covered. Now I can’t tell who it is…

Hit the jump for the screens. Continue reading Sonic and the Black Knight Screens Make You Say ‘Ni’

Circuit City Unleashes Ad Blunder

Do you live in the U.S.? Do you own Sonic Unleashed on Wii? Tried out the variety of control schemes but still not satisfied? Well your local Circuit City are selling an awesome, super cool, limited edition version that supports the Wii Balance Board where you can make Sonic run with your very own two feet and use new all powerful sumo wrestling attacks as the Werehog. Or so it would seem anyway…

Sonic Unleashed Wii & PS2 Back Covers

Woolworths.co.uk have uploaded the reverse box-art covers of the Wii/PS2 versions of upcoming game Sonic Unleashed. While both versions apparently use the Criware and Havok engines to create the speedy new worlds Sonic will encounter, there is some extra information. The Wii version will support, as controllers, the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, or the Classic/Gamecube Controllers.

For anyone who can’t read the text on these back covers, it reads: “As the sun sets… A new adventure begins!”

  • Sonic at his fastest, super 2D to 3D high-speed action.
  • Explore exciting locations in a world wide race against time.
  • Transform after dark with all new powerful combat skills.

Wii owners should be pleased and can’t complain about controls with such a variety of control schemes available. Regarding the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, Woolworths haven’t put those back covers up which adds further to the speculation that they will be released later than the Wii/PS2 versions. As soon as those back covers are put up, we’ll post them here for you guys. See how we look after ya?

Wiiz.fr have got their hands on some China screenshots from the Wii version. The screens look a little grainy and you can see the jaggies in places but overall they look good because of how well the background and foreground are designed. Continue reading China is looking lovely on Wii

TGS: Sonic and the Black Knight Trailer

Sega decided to show a trailer of Sonic and the Black Knight at the Tokyo Game Show this year, which is quite an unprecedented move given that we still have no firm release date for the next Wii adventure. It expands a little bit on the three-second teaser that was contained in the Wii showcase we posted a few days ago, and much like Secret Rings, involves Sonic going into storyland to beat an evil force. It’s his destiny, apparently. It still looks like Sonic-on-rails to me, so the jury’s still out here.

Nintendo Show First Clip of Sonic and the Black Knight

The other day, Nintendo Japan held a conference and showed the world that they did care somewhat for their core gamers, announcing a heap of games for Wii and DS that are likely to satisfy a few people at least. What interested us however, was the inclusion of the first ever footage of upcoming game Sonic and the Black Knight. You can see the three-or-so second clip towards the end of the video, above, round about 3:45.

It basically looks exactly like Sonic and the Secret Rings, with a sword. And more grey. And an assumption of much more flailing about. There was an open green field though, so that will sort of make up for… something. Interesting reveal nonetheless. Thanks to Brent and Christian who pointed this out to us.

Samba De Amigo Wii delayed in Europe

Sega Europe have finally posted up a release date for Samba De Amigo Wii on their site and it’s not the one shown in their earlier release schedules. The Gearbox developed rhythm game game is now going to be released alongside Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood on the 26th September instead of the original date of the 19th September. No news yet on why the game’s been delayed but if we hear something we’ll let you know.

New Sonic Unleashed Wii details

Spanish gaming site Revogamer have had the opportunity to talk to Sega about the Wii version of Sonic Unleashed and here is a translation of their main findings from GoNintendo –

  • Half of the game normal, the other half were-hog
  • Wii-PS360 more similar than first thought, design and gameplay-wise
  • You use Wiimote + Nunchuck
  • Won’t have motion controls for attacking from the air, despite of being pretty similar to The Secret Rings
  • Some problems controlling Sonic at a low speed. Walking for rings, etc
  • Wiimote just for accelerate-push
  • No motion controls for side-step, you’ll use B and Z, like on 360
  • Don’t know if they’re using for balancing ropes or QTEs, but they should!
  • According to SEGA, the game (Wii version) should be shown in the upcoming TGS, in October.
  • Not showing the Black Night because of focusing on this one first.

So barely any waggle in Sonic’s sections at least, wether that’s a good or bad thing I’ll let you be the judge. Now hopefully with the Wii version confirmed to be at TGS next month we’ll see some footage at long last.

PEGI now listing Sonic & Knuckles for Virtual Console

PEGI is now listing Sonic & Knuckles for the Virtual Console. The game has been given a 3+ rating. We all know the game appeared on the ESRB’s site months ago and hasn’t shown up on the Virtual Console in any territory yet but hopefully this means the game is still coming. There is no word on if the Virtual Console version will feature the lock-on capabilities of the title in any shape or form yet, but hopefully we’ll find out soon.

Chris@ONM to go hands-on with Wii Unleashed in 1-2 weeks

Chris@ONM, one of Official Nintendo Magazine’s writers has announced in an ONM forum discussion that he will be going hands-on with the Wii version of Sonic Unleashed in 1 to 2 weeks time.

Aye, naturally the controls will be slightly different. What I mean is that the basic game and levels will be the same on each version.

I don’t know what the Wii controls are as yet because I didn’t go hands on with it. I believe it’s movement with the analogue stick though. I’ll be getting to play it in a week or two so I’ll let you know.

Incidentally, a couple of people have mentioned to me that other sites have complained about the 360 version’s framerate. This game is still in early stages of development: please don’t think for a second that the finished game will have the noticeable framerate problems the demo I played did.

Chris had recently been to GDC Leipzig to try out the Wii version of Sonic Unleashed but unfortunately when he got there he was told by a Sega rep that the Wii demo isn’t working and got directed to the Xbox 360 demo instead. So How’s Sonic Unleashed on the Wii Looking?

Really really nice, as it happens! There were fears that the lack of horsepower on the waggle-console would lead to a decidedly crappier looking game, but Dimps appear to be doing a fantastic job of maintaining the style of the next-gen experience and pumping their own Wii-specific controls into it. Naturally there’s a graphical deficiency that you notice if you compare Wii to 360 graphics, and Nintendo’s console is having a bit of a palette downgrade going on (looking a bit more brown I’d say) but you gotta admit it’s pretty tasty all the same. Looks like Sega really do like to push the graphical power of the Wii as much as they can.

Hit the jump for the gallery, you can also see some Wiire-hog action going on. Look, he’s jumping over razorblades like in Sonic 1! But… he’s a werewolf! Khaaaan! Continue reading So How’s Sonic Unleashed on the Wii Looking?
