Jakks Pacific, the prolific manufacturers of various Sonic toys, will have a panel at this years San Diego Comic Con. The panel will take place July 21 at 9PM EST. The panel will be livestreamed on their Instagram at /jakkspacific.toys, though we will also have someone on the ground to provide coverage!

New reveals can be expected this panel, though chances are at least some of them will be ones that have already been leaked, such as their upcoming Blaze figure. Nevertheless, we should at least get time frames for upcoming waves!

Sonic Prime Dash Also Releases Today, Here’s a Launch Trailer

You might be a bit too distracted watching Sonic Prime on Netflix to notice right now but, SEGA HARDlight has also released a launch trailer for the companion game from Netflix Games, called Sonic Prime Dash.

The game was announced during the Sonic Central 2023 showcase last month, which actually feels like a year or so ago now. As you might expect, it’s Sonic Dash, featuring Sonic Prime characters. If you have a Netflix subscription, it’s a free download, so we imagine a lot of the grinding required of the original free-to-play Sonic Dash will be reduced or removed entirely. We’ll see!

Check out the cool trailer above, which SEGA HARDlight posted on their social media channel linked below, and why not download it and play while you sit on your couch watching the rest of Sonic Prime Season 2, eh?

Sonic Prime Season 2 Launches Today

Today’s the big day! The “Second Season” (that’s what everyone is calling it now) of Sonic Prime has officially launched on Netflix worldwide – so go off now and start watching it!

If you cast your mind back about six months ago, towards the end of the last set of episodes, we saw Sonic trying to desperately fix a fragmented ‘Shatterverse’ after his (mis)use of the Prism Shard. Along the way he visited several different realities, each with their own versions of Tails, Knuckles, Amy and more.

The eight-episode run ended with Sonic taking on a giant Eggman, facing off against Shadow and having to deal with an irritated Tails Nine – who has skipped through a warp hole with most of the Prism Shard crystals. So, the blue blur has got a bit of a fight on his hands yet.

In case you missed it, check out the trailer for the new season below. And hit up Netflix to watch the whole season!

TSS (Mini) Review: Sonic Prime Season 2’s Debut Episode Brings in Shadow and Ups the Action

Sonic Prime Season 2’s debut episode is almost everything I was hoping it would be…up until the final moments. Shadow, who was only scantly featured in the show’s first 8 episode batch, features in a big way here, and he’s the best he’s been in any official media in literal years.

The episode begins right where the previous season left off, with Sonic encountering Shadow after being blasted out of the pirate world. This begins an extended exposition sequence as Sonic learns about the void between shatterspaces, Shadow’s predicament, and most importantly: the fate of Green Hill and how it can be restored.

Shadow is a true highlight through all this. His characterization has been…controversial amongst some fans over the last several years, and while I find it all overblown, it’s still hard for me to disagree. SEGA has long seemed content to leave Shadow as a flat, cardboard caricature of a character, one who likes no one, needs nothing, and is one-hundred-percent pure-uncut grade-A angst.

It’s subtle, but Prime’s Shadow is emotive and motivated in ways he hasn’t really been allowed to be since the Archie Sonic days. This is largely thanks to a combination of Ian Hanlin’s stellar voice work, the effectively animated acting, and the solid script. This gives Shadow’s characterization some depth, making him feel less like Angsty McAngsterson and more like Sonic’s more serious, scolding older brother.

Shadow’s clearly angry over Sonic’s careless actions, distraught over what’s happened to Green Hill and its denizens, and genuinely appears to care about what’s going on. One big issue i’ve long had with Shadow over the last 15 years is that it’s never really been clear to me what motivates him to do good. Was it duty to GUN? An obligation to Maria? Since it hasn’t really felt like he actually cares about anyone, why fight Eggman?

In Sonic Prime, the answer seems to be that Shadow genuinely does care about people, even if he remains pretty standoffish about it. Like I said: it’s subtle, but it’s definitely evident here, and that makes a world of difference when it comes to Shadow as a character. Hopefully this is a sign that SEGA is loosening its grip on Shadow, but even if it isn’t, I’m just glad Prime got to do this with him.

Shadow’s scolding of Sonic eventually leads to fisticuffs between him and the blue blur, and that’s when we get to the episode’s other highlight: the action. The action sequences of Prime were a highlight in the initial 8 episodes, but the fight between Sonic and Shadow is truly something special. This is the sort of Sonic action I’ve been waiting decades for.

Sonic and Shadow’s fight is fast and exciting, full of dynamic camera angles, superb choreography, and the sort combat you could only hope to get from a properly animated Sonic versus Shadow fight. This, more than anything else, really makes me hope Sonic Prime can exist beyond its initial season, and maybe explore other story arcs and corners of Sonic’s world. Just imagine the possibilities if they were able to bring characters like Surge into this show!

Unfortunately, by the end of the episode, it’s clear this isn’t about to become a Sonic and Shadow adventure. Shadow is still locked out of the shatterspaces, thus also locking him out of most of the plot. I admit, I hoped Shadow would join the show’s main cast with this episode, since an adventure focused around Sonic and Shadow having to work together simply sounds fun. Alas, that is not to be, at least not for now. Maybe in the final batch of the show’s 24 episodes?

Nevertheless, Sonic Prime’s second batch of episodes looks to be expanding on the shatterverse crossovers that started happening at the end of season 1. I am definitely looking forward to seeing the various versions of each character interact.

Netflix Shares the First Sonic Prime Season 2 Episode Early on YouTube

Netflix is once again giving fans an early taste of Sonic Prime, as their Netflix After School YouTube channel has posted the first full episode of Season 2. Picking up directly after the end of Season 1, the episode sheds light on the mysterious echoes of Shadow Sonic encountered.

The full Season 2 premieres in little over a week, July 13, promising Shadow to take a more pronounced role and Shatterverse bleed over, though a third season is expected to fulfill the previously announced series length of 24 episodes.

Sonic Central Debuts New Sonic Prime Trailer

Sonic Prime got a nice little trailer at today’s Sonic Central, which dished some new info on the upcoming episodes.

Shadow explained to Sonic that in order to restore their world, they needed to gather the pieces of the paradox prism, which has one piece in each shatterspace. Sounds like Sonic and Shadow will be working together, at least for a bit! We also get to see a little more of that phantom Green Hill that was used in the footage released yesterday, including a ghost Big.

The worlds and characters of each Shatter Space also appear to be merging, with buildings from New Yoke City growing out of the ground in Boscage Maze. Finally, the trailer ends with the debut of….some sort of new robot Sonic?

Check out a gallery of stills taken from the trailer below:

Sonic Prime Dash Coming to Netflix Games

The popular mobile endless running game, Sonic Dash, will be getting a ‘Sonic Prime’ themed lick of paint and re-released for Netflix customers under the name “Sonic Prime Dash”.

Announced during the Sonic Central showcase earlier today, Sonic Prime Dash will feature everything that you already know and love about the existing SEGA HARDlight game – which first launched in 2013 – but will take character designs from the Netflix animated series.

Not a lot of extra information was revealed at the time of announcement, but hey. If it’s more Sonic Dash, that’s good enough for us. This new version of the game will launch alongside the upcoming ‘new season’ of Sonic Prime, on July 13. If you’re subscribed to Netflix, then you’ll automatically have access to this game via the Netflix Games service.

More Super Forms and Sonic Prime are Set to Hit Mobile

This morning’s Sonic Central brought a few mobile game update announcements for new characters and what could technically be called a new game by the loosest possible definition.

Sonic Prime Dash

Netflix is getting an exclusive version of Sonic Dash, titled “Sonic Prime Dash.” The game will launch in July with the new season of the show, and features characters from the show. However, all stages appear to be the same as the ones from regular Sonic Dash, so don’t expect it to be significantly different. More information in our separate news story for it, here.

Super Silver in Dash/Speed Battle

Super Silver already hit both Sonic Dash and Sonic Forces: Speed Battle. In Dash, he has about 5 days remaining, and will be available until the 29th in Speed Battle.

Monster Dragon Hunter Lancelot

Shadow’s medieval getup was previously available in Speed Battle, but will hit Sonic Dash/Dash+ in July.

Classic Super Sonic

No specifics given, but Classic Super Sonic was teased for upcoming events in Sonic mobile games. The last time we’ve seen polygonal Classic Sonic go Super was in 2011’s Sonic Generations.

Sonic’s Got a New Hat in Roblox

Sonic Speed Simulator on Roblox (the one that, you know, is dealing with some things) will be adding a new skin featuring Classic Sonic in an open tux, jaunty top hat, and classy shoes.

No Sign Yet of HARDlight’s “Narrative Driven” Game

Sonic and Shadow are Fighting Again in New Sonic Prime Clip

These hedgehogs just can’t get along, huh?

Sonic and Shadow are duking it out in a new clip released by Netflix Malaysia as part of their “What’s New in July” video compilation. The clip sees them fighting as Shadow seemingly attempts to steal Sonic’s “tech.” Interestingly, the battle takes place in a weird, off-color version of Green Hill. It seems the new batch of episodes may shed more light on what exactly happened to Sonic’s original friends and home. You can check out the clip below:

TONS of New SEGA & Sonic Merch Shown Off at Brand Licensing Expo 2023

Get ready to argue if it’s “Waldo” or “Wally,” because you’re going to need to squint to pick out all the new and old merch in SEGA’s booth at Brand Licensing Expo 2023. Naoto Ohshima on Twitter snapped a photo of the packed shelves of toys, plush, calendars, books, and sporting goods. Here’s a taste of what we can pick out, but I’m sure Twitter will be combing through this for days, so don’t consider our initial look exhaustive:

Of the especially new and cool stuff, one thing that stands out most is the previously rumored Death Egg playset from Jakks Pacific, and as we can now see, is a legit full Death Egg that flips around to reveal the final boss of… (Care to guess? No seriously, I want you to guess. Because you won’t be able to.) Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II. Listen, I know how you feel about the overall Sonic 4 project, but that last boss, the one where you fight Eggman in a giant robot heart is rad, and I won’t hear otherwise.

image.png.b1b938c404b13e0758fe88e19f9cd3c9.png

Near the bottom right at the intersection of IDWtown and Plush Junction is a previously unannounced plush of our favorite mad scientist drama club kid, Dr. Starline (almost certainly coming from Great Eastern Entertainment), bringing the IDW-to-plush character count up to three.

image.png.14b3cea4f7e9ed1b4a9000454e9255bc.png

Finally (because we simply cannot highlight every major item there), it’s worth taking a good look at the previously announced Knuckles the Dread Pirate Ship playset, because it’s a LOT bigger than you may think it is from the promotional pics. I recommend using the actual human head and back behind the toy as a scale reference.

image.png.b21db24a387c490ab704acbf1074c80b.png

I’m certain the comments will have quite a blast picking apart what else can be found hiding in Mr. Arzest’s treasure trove tweet, so have at it, and we’ll be sure to keep you up to date on when we have official public announcements for some of these new merch items.

Super Silver, Knuckles the Dread and Thorn Rose Coming to Sonic Forces Mobile

SEGA HARDlight has announced the next wave of new characters for Sonic Forces Mobile, and for Silver and Sonic Prime fans there is a lot to be happy about. Super Silver will be joining the race for the first time, as well as Shatterverse protagonists Knuckles the Dread and Thorn Rose. And for Super Silver, we’re treated to an incredible CG render that harks back to some classic Sonic Channel Yuji Uekawa artwork. Check out the images below.

The images come from Sonic Forces Mobile superfan SonicWindBlue, with the details and dates pulled from SEGA HARDlight’s Discord server – Knuckles the Dread will be the first character available to unlock during this season, with his event running from 15 June – 22nd June. Then, Super Silver will be bogarting Sonic’s birthday by having his event run from 22nd June – 29th June. And then, Thorn Rose will be unlockable from 13th July – 20th July.

We will add all of these events to the Sonic Stadium Events Calendar soon, so you can keep track.

In addition to all this multiverse multi-character madness, the Sonic Forces Mobile app in general was updated to version 4.18 today, here’s a list of changes made to the game with this new patch (via HARDlight’s Discord channel):

Fixed an issue where Babylon Rogue characters could get stuck in their jumping animation after slamming onto grind rails

Fixed an issue where the text for ‘Special’ rarity would go onto two lines when language set to Russian

Fixed an issue where the text for ‘Challenger’ rarity would go onto two lines when language set to German or Russian

Fixed an issue with the visual effect of second dash pad (on triple dashpad boost)

Removed the incorrect free chest reward info displayed in tiers section

Fixed an issue with the party match ticket icon that sometimes appears in Lightning Deals

Fixed an issue where suspending the app when activating Super Form could prevent ring drain

The new update now comes with an awesome-looking new splash screen featuring Super Silver (via SWB):

Knuckles the Dread’s Pirate Ship and Sonic Prime 2.5″ Figures On Sale in July

In addition to the 13″ plush toy and 5″ action figures already announced, Jakks Pacific has revealed that it will be also using its merchandise licensing deal with SEGA to release waves of smaller 2.5″ figures, as well as a replica of Knuckles the Dread’s Angel’s Voyage pirate ship as seen in the Sonic Prime TV series.

First, the small 2.5″ figures. Unlike their 5″ bigger brothers, these are sold in packs rather than individually. In the Wave 1 set you get little cute versions of Sonic, Rusty Rose, Tails Nine and the Prism Shard with a base to display it with. This multipack is ‘New Yoke City’ themed, which suggests that future Waves will focus on other Shatterverse worlds. The set goes on sale in July for $19.99.

Now this is really cool! Jakks is also releasing a toy vehicle replica of the Angel’s Voyage pirate ship, seen on Netflix’s Sonic Prime show. And it looks massive – there’s storage space for other 2.5″ figures (so you can hide away your Wave 1 multipack toys in there), three launching cannons, rolling wheels and even a trap door! The set comes with a Knuckles the Dread 2.5″ figure, so even if you don’t have Sonic in you can at least sail the seven seas with Knuckles. This also goes on sale in July for $39.99.

All of these Sonic Prime toys are releasing in July to coincide with the release of new episodes of the TV show on Netflix.

What do you think? And who do you want to see in future multipacks? Let us know in the comments below!

Licensed Sonic Prime Plush Toy and 5″ Action Figures Coming July

SEGA and Jakks Pacific have announced a new licensing deal that will see the launch of a series of Sonic Prime toys to coincide with the continuation of the Netflix animation series. Among these is a new 13″ Sonic the Hedgehog plush toy and the first wave of Prime-themed 5″ articulated figures.

The Sonic the Hedgehog 13″ plush toy is posable, and “made from super soft fabrics and stuffing” (as per the press release we received for these products). Looks like you could give him a huge cuddle for days, to be fair. It will be on sale for $19.99.

Meanwhile, the first set of 5″ action figures will offer over 12 points of articulation, so you can really go for it and recreate some creative scenes from the TV show (or from your own imagination). Wave 1 of the figures includes Sonic, Tails Nine, Thorn Rose and Mr. Dr. Eggman, and will be available individually for $14.99 each.

All of these products will be available in physical stores and online retailers in “North America, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Europe, Middle East and Africa” (so practically everywhere, then) in July. Just in time to start playing along with the new episodes when they air on Netflix.

Which ones are you getting?

Sonic Prime ‘Season 2’ Premieres on Netflix July 13

Netflix has announced a release date for the continuation of its ‘Sonic Prime’ animated series. The ongoing series run – which is being dubbed ‘Season 2’ by fans – will premiere on the streaming service on July 13, 2023.

A new image has been released by the company, along with a synopsis reminding everyone of the overall plot of the show. You can see both below.

Sonic Prime: Season 2. (L to R) Deven Mack as Sonic, Ian Hanlin as Big the Cat, Ashleigh Ball as Tails, Vincent Tong as Knuckles, Kazumi Evans as Rouge, and Shannon Chan Kent as Amy in Sonic Prime: Season 2. Cr. NETFLIX © 2023

Synopsis: The action-packed adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog go into overdrive when a run-in with Dr. Eggman results in a literal universe-shattering event. Desperate to piece his prime reality back together and save his old friends, Sonic races through the Shatterverse, discovering strange worlds and enlisting new friends in an epic adventure of a lifetime!

The first batch of Sonic Prime episodes launched on Netflix back in December 2022, and only contained eight episodes. We hope this next set of episodes is larger and fully fleshes out Sonic’s journey across the Shatterverse worlds. For instance, how does Shadow play into the proceedings and how do the pair work together to help fix the broken dimensions?

We’ll have a good couple months to wait and figure it all out. Who’s excited!?

Details On First Wave of Jakks Pacific Sonic Prime Toys Leaked

Details on Jakks Pacific’s upcoming line of Sonic Prime toys have been leaked by Entertainment Earth, a toy wholesaler that specializes in selling toys to stores. They posted a listing, which was quickly removed, detailing the nature of the upcoming toy line.

The Sonic Prime action figures will be five inches tall, and the first wave will consist of the following characters:

  • Sonic
  • Dr. Eggman
  • Thorn
  • Nine

While Earth Entertainment was quick to remove the listing, they weren’t quick enough. The Twitter account Sonic Merch News spotted the listing and tweeted it out.

These aren’t the first Sonic Prime toys to be revealed. PMI announced their own line back in January, and Turkish toy company Dede has pasted the show’s branding on various toddler toys.

Apparent Leaked Clip of Sonic Prime’s Next Episode Surfaces Online

It’s been a hot minute since we all binged (very quickly) the first eight episodes of Sonic Prime on Netflix, and since its December debut we’ve not heard much about when the rest of the first season will hit the streaming service. But if a supposedly leaked clip of a future episode is any indication, we may be in for some news very soon.

A short seven-second clip has surfaced on Twitter, originally posted by AstroSeedP but circulated further by the ‘Sonic__Prime’ account, claiming to be “new Prime Season 2 leaked footage”. While we’d argue that this wouldn’t strictly be ‘Season 2’ (more like ‘Season 1, Part 2’), the clip does appear to show an action sequence that could legitimately follow on from Episode 8’s swashbuckling cliffhanger.

We won’t speculate any further – although we will note that the clip does also seem to feature an action from Sonic that doesn’t previously seem possible in previous episodes – but if you’re curious and don’t mind potential spoilers, you can take a look at the video and some screengrabs we’ve pulled from the clip below (click the spoiler tags to reveal).

A Weird Line of Sonic Prime-Branded Toys Are Hitting Turkish Toy Sites

As a longtime, adult Sonic fan, I am often jealous of the toys kids get these days. Why couldn’t we get the anthropomorphized Sonic truck hauling a chest full of giant medical supplies?! Or the rideable Sonic car?! Or the Sonic-branded Sonic tool set in a rolling suitcase…?

Wait what?

Right, okay, enough with my schtick. So these things exist:

These appear to be part of a line of officially licensed Sonic Prime toys, though the use of the license doesn’t seem to extend much beyond “slap Sonic Prime renders on various otherwise unrelated kids toys.” The toys are manufactured by Dede, a Turkish toy company, and as such are currently only available on Turkish websites. The site with the widest selection is Dede’s own online store, Fen Toys.

Now, you may be looking at these and thinking, “wait, did they just take some generic toy truck and slap Sonic’s eyes on it?” and…yes! Yes they did! All of these toys are essentially just variations of existing non-licensed toys, with the Sonic medical tools truck being based on this Medical Set Truck toy. Looking around the website, that’s true for all of these, and they’ve also done this for other licensed characters like Spider-man and Mickey Mouse. Nevertheless, this is Sonic merch, and most importantly weird Sonic merch, so we are obliged to cover it.

So here’s a gallery of every single Sonic toy Dede is selling:

Yeah, I am pretty jealous of the Sonic toys today’s kids get. But I also feel kind of bad for Sonic merch collectors, because there’s more of it then ever, and anyone who wants a truly complete collection needs to buy rebranded stuff like this.

Nevertheless, if anyone has ever wanted a Sonic branded set of medical tools in a little plastic rolling suitcase…it is a good time to be alive.

The second Sonic the Hedgehog movie is (finally) about to be released to cinemas in Japan, and there’s been plenty of hype building up in the country as they get to see Sonic and Knuckles in live action. An interview with a producer at SEGA discusses the success of the first movie – and interestingly appears to suggest a release window for the upcoming Netflix series ‘Sonic Prime’ as well.

Shadow Appears In The New Sonic Prime Teaser Trailer

Today’s Sonic Central broadcast did have an interesting piece of information for Sonic Prime. It was a teaser trailer for the Netflix show. Most of it isn’t all that interesting, until the very end where a character shows himself.

Yes, that’s Shadow the Hedgehog! It isn’t surprising, but it is officially confirmed that he’ll be in Sonic Prime. The show is supposed to premiere later this year, so it’s very likely we’ll be getting more information soon. In the meantime, stay tuned as we continue to cover the news from today’s busy Sonic news day!

First Footage of Sonic Prime in Netflix Sizzle Reel

This morning, Netflix After School released a new sizzle reel for upcoming animated kids and family shows, with a brief (very brief) bit at the end featuring Sonic Prime:

Sonic content begins at 1:48

The scene shows off Sonic running in Green Hills (featuring rings and Sonic running in his figure-8 style). He mugs to the camera, delivers a line about how cool he is, and… that’s kind of it for now.

It’s not a lot to go on for now, but the performance sounds Roger Craig Smith-like in voice, but with a little bit of Ben Schwartz delivery. It plays up Sonic’s ego a bit (which isn’t a facet they play up much in the games, but shows itself prominently in Sonic Boom and the movie), but this is inferring a lot based on a single line. Hopefully this means that we’ll be getting a full trailer in the near future.

Netflix also appears to have updated its website with some more details. As you can see from the screenshot above, the new voice of Sonic is Deven Mack. A range of new voice actors are also listed, none of which appear to be connected to the current video game acting cast.

More details as we get it. Thanks to Lemanic for the news tip!

Sonic Prime Touts Cinematic Action Sequences, Changed WildBrain’s 3D Animation Pipeline

During an October 2021 investor presentation, WildBrain, the animation company producing Sonic Prime for Netflix, took the opportunity to play up their technical advancements while working on the series. Sonic Paradise picked up on the statement and grabbed a clip from the video presentation:

Sonic has provided an amazing opportunity for us on the 3D side. It has allowed us to sort of reevaluate our 3D pipeline and really examine where the value-add is in that. We’ve added a number of new software packages and methodologies to the pipeline. We’re able to provide a really cinematic look that is honestly making it feel like a Marvel movie when we get into the action sequences.

Logan McPherson, WildBrain Investors Day Transcript, Oct. 5, 2021

Calling action sequences Marvel-like is a tall order, but this was specifically aimed at investors, and comparing something to Disney has become easy “it will look good” shorthand for those who aren’t interested in a nuanced discussion of the technical details. However, it does reaffirms a dedication to Sonic Prime being an action series, in contrast to 2014’s Sonic Boom, which played out more sitcom than action-adventure.

Details on the series itself remain tight, including its release window (still expected this year), leading some to worry about its production, schedule, and staffing. This may not alleviate all concerns, but it does give a window into how WildBrain is approaching the series’ technical demands. WildBrain’s current catalog includes many CG animated series across dozens of networks and licensing partnerships, but few CG shows they’ve produced in recent years would qualify as “action.”

2021 Was the Year of Waiting for Trailers

While it may still feel fresh in everyone’s mind, Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces were released in late 2017. We are four years divorced from those games (five by the time we get the next major release), with only one Sumo Digital racer and a piece of significant DLC between. We as Sonic fans don’t typically have to wait as long for the next big thing, even if the next big thing is a disappointment. We’re hungry, and we can’t stop thinking about what’s next.

2021 came with multiple new game announcements, a couple new trailers, and in spite of all that, we still don’t have a firm idea on what that next thing is.

May’s Sonic Central was a firehose of announcements, from the first official reveal of Sonic Colors: Ultimate to King Ice’s big gaudy necklaces to putting fictional doctors and athletes in Sonic mascot suits. But wedged in there were announcements for Sonic Origins, a collection of the core 16-bit Sonic platformers, and some sort of game where Sonic runs through the woods with digital effects (we now know as Sonic Frontiers). Despite these reveals, both slotted for next year, we have not actually seen their respective games. We’ve seen messaging, aspirations, and broad genre and style proclamations, but we’ve not seen an actual fully-formed game idea that will clearly go on to become a retail product.

While I don’t think the infamous Sonic Cycle has held real power for over a decade, SEGA’s marketing strategy remains as frustrating as ever: they seed teasers and extremely limited reveals long before they show any context, letting everyone’s mind go wild with possibilities before eventually grounding us in the reality of the game they are actually making. I’ve seen so many fans envision what Sonic Frontiers would be/could be/should be based on slow pans of landscapes and 4chan leaks from 2019, but the hard reality is that we still know very little of what that game is now and what it will be a year from now. The Game Awards trailer only contains three real pieces of information about the game:

1. The next Sonic game is open world.

2. It has open, natural environments with ancient-civilization-style points of interest dotted throughout.

3. There are one or more giant enemies.

At the very least, these core concepts have been around long enough that a CG animation studio (Marza or otherwise) was able to complete pre-rendered cutscenes for the trailer. What they don’t show during this trailer is what Sonic does, which, you know, is kind of important for a game. But the goal here admittedly wasn’t to show the game itself. The goal was messaging, and the message is, “We are working on the next game, and we’re winding up for a big risky swing.”

Weirdly, Origins is an even tougher nut to crack. We’ve either seen 60% of the game already if the collection compiles the Retro/Star Engine remakes (or some modification of them) while finally adding Sonic 3 & Knuckles to the lineup, or we’ve seen literally nothing if they’re using some other engine to recreate these games in 16:9. That said, development must have been incredibly early when SEGA announced it, since the Sonic Central reveal contains no actual video of the collection itself (as denoted by the “Original Gameplay” disclaimer in the corner and all the 4:3 footage of Sonic 3/Sonic & Knuckles).

In the same vein, we still know precious little about next year’s new animated series, Sonic Prime, save for some concept art we weren’t supposed to see. We know it’s some manner of multiverse show coming from Man of Action and WildBrain, two groups whose outputs vary wildly in quality and demographic aim. If there’s any room for more definitive feelings about a future Sonic project, the one space where we did get a trailer with plenty of information was for Paramount’s Sonic 2 movie. It’s more Ben Schwartz and Jim Carrey antics, but with game references and Idris Elba. You probably already have a sense of whether or not that appeals to you.

I’m left excited and anxious for 2022, not because I can point to anything and say “I think this will be good” or “I think this will be a trash fire.” I just need to know. 2021 wasn’t an appetizer, it was looking at a menu and imagining the best and worst possible scenarios. Making a satisfying open world game is difficult and time consuming for any development studio, but Sonic Team certainly have plenty of time. Templates for really satisfying open world games exist, such as Breath of the Wild and Shadow of the Colossus, and the Frontiers trailer has an interest in both.

These 2022 projects are still a ways out, it’s worth reiterating that. But who can blame us for walking away from 2021 disoriented. We were told so much, and yet we were told so little. Until we actually have a clear vision of what next year’s games and cartoon are, we’ll be entering 2022 still waiting for trailers.

WildBrain Announces Another Round of Hiring for Sonic Prime

WildBrain, the animation studio behind Sonic Prime, is seeking to hire more people for the show’s production. They are seeking CG FX Lead, a CG FX artist, and a Previs Artist. Potential applicants can apply here.

We won’t speculate too much regarding what this could mean regarding the show’s production. We know it’s scheduled for next year, and the show has been in some form of production since at least late 2020. Perhaps this is for the show’s second half (as Netflix often releases shows in multiple chunks) or an unannounced second season. Or maybe they are merely dealing with turnover.

Regardless, we’ll encourage everyone not to read too much into this.

Ian Flynn Consulting on Sonic Prime

We’ve known for a little while that Sonic comics scribe Ian Flynn has at least been informed about Sonic Prime’s production since before it was publicly announced. We now have a better idea as to the extent of his involvement in the show’s production, thanks to a tweet by Man of Action writer and artist Duncan Rouleau.

He confirmed that Flynn has been consulting on the project and “has been invaluable.” This confirms that, at the very least, Man of Action is actively seeking input from creators who have experience with the franchise. Here’s hoping that bodes well for Sonic Prime’s quality!

Sonic Prime is being produced by Man of Action and Wildbrain, and is expected to hit Netflix sometime next year. Thanks goes to Alex Hedgefox over on our Discord server for the news tip!
