With Lee Majdoub’s performance as Agent Stone in the Sonic the Hedgehog movies winning the hearts of die-hard fans around the world, it’s no surprise that there is a tonne of adoring fan art of Dr. Robotnik’s coffee-serving sidekick. But Latin American artist ‘Lanth’ took things one step further by inserting a cartoon version of Stone into SEGA’s ‘Sonic Mania Adventures’ animation series.

Back in the 90s, when Sonic was the newest, hottest video game property on the block, having a cartoon was always a telltale sign that a game series had truly made it. Mario had a series of them, Legend of Zelda had one, Earthworm Jim had one, and even Bubsy almost had one.

Yukio Kusumoto talks about the origins of Sonic Mania Adventures
Comicbook recently sat down with Yukio Kusumoto, producer of the Sonic Mania Adventures and Team Sonic Racing: Overdrive animated shorts. The interview, amongst a treasure trove of other facts, summarized how Sonic Mania came to be.
- The idea came about after the Sonic Boom TV show wrapped up.
- The team wanted to create a short-form companion piece for a game.
- Sonic Mania had recently released and the physical release was up-coming, so the short-form content was made for that.
- Mentions that there are 6 episodes of Sonic Mania Adventures “so far” and that its been a great success.
- Sonic Mania is a game all about nostalgia and they wanted to find a creator who’s all about Sonic. It wasn’t hard to find a fit for the project and eventually they found Tyson Hesse, who’s worked on some Sega projects on and off and was a storyboard artist at the time.
- They wanted to replicate the original world of Sonic, and realize it in the style of a 90’s Saturday morning cartoon. They decided to go with traditional hand-drawn animation.
- They wanted a style close to the game, but is also original and not too polished with a “for the fans, by the fans” feel.
- They worked for months designing the characters and worked closely with Takashi Iizuka, the head of product development.
[EDIT: Tyson Hesse also chimed in on the story via Twitter, also crediting Sonic Social Manager Aaron Webber for his part in the realisation of Sonic Mania Adventures:
He isn’t mentioned here, but the story of Mania Adventures can’t be told without mentioning Aaron Webber, tbh. Without his championing internally for the value of it there wouldn’t have been animation for Sonic social at all.”
Thanks to Aaron and the many unsung heroes of Sonic Mania and beyond! – AT]

Sonic Twitter Meme Hints at Upcoming Sonic Mania Adventures Episode, Game Announcement
The official Sonic the Hedgehog twitter loves its online memes and it may now be using one to hint at some upcoming announcements.
In an image that manages to combine the Sonic Mania Adventures meme with the recent Privacy Policy meme, which pokes fun at the EU’s General Privacy Protection Regulation law, there is a message that says the next Sonic Mania Adventures episode will be released “this month,” and that a new game announcement is forthcoming.
So we can probably expect the next episode of Sonic Mania Adventures by May 30. The “new game” is almost certainly a reference to the as-yet untitled Sonic racing game revealed a few months ago. It would be surprising if that game didn’t get a full reveal by the time E3 comes around next month.

Cancelled 2007 Sonic The Hedgehog Cartoon Details Surface
As the fan base wait for the imminent release of Sonic Mania Adventures, the newest cartoon incarnation of Sonic the Hedgehog, it appears that another cartoon, pitched some 10 years ago, never saw the light of day.
According to a LinkedIn profile for TV writer Grant Moran (whose credits include Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures and Batman), a new Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon was in the works between the months of May and October 2007, some 3 years after Sonic X concluded.
We contacted Mr Moran, who was kind enough to provide a few more details about the TV series which ultimately failed to get green-lit. Simply entitled ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’, it was initially commissioned by Sega through entertainment company Phuuz Entertainment.
Although no further details could be provided, we thank Mr Moran for confirming this was indeed a TV series project, and will bring you any further updates to this story as they come to light.
