As the fan base wait for the imminent release of Sonic Mania Adventures, the newest cartoon incarnation of Sonic the Hedgehog, it appears that another cartoon, pitched some 10 years ago, never saw the light of day.
According to a LinkedIn profile for TV writer Grant Moran (whose credits include Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures and Batman), a new Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon was in the works between the months of May and October 2007, some 3 years after Sonic X concluded.
We contacted Mr Moran, who was kind enough to provide a few more details about the TV series which ultimately failed to get green-lit. Simply entitled ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’, it was initially commissioned by Sega through entertainment company Phuuz Entertainment.
Although no further details could be provided, we thank Mr Moran for confirming this was indeed a TV series project, and will bring you any further updates to this story as they come to light.

You may remember a report we made a couple of years back about a LinkedIn profile we found for Sonic Xtreme’s Lead Artist Ross Harris which stated he designed character models for the game, including Amy Rose. Well, The Sonic Stadium has now found a portfolio website for the artist which features the above models for Amy Rose as well as models for Sonic and some badniks. After six months without any release and and vast amounts of speculation of it’s fate, SEGA of America have finally announced that it is ending their partnership with Archie Comics, effectively cancelling it. The tweet sent out by the official Sonic the Hedgehog account is below;
— Sonic the Hedgehog (@sonic_hedgehog) July 19, 2017
As the tweet also says, this doesn’t mean that SEGA won’t foray into comics in the future. But it is the end of an era, and what a legacy it left;
290 regular issues of the main comic.
Four serial spin-off comics.
Over 500 issues combined.
Several crossovers with other franchises.
Dozens of beloved characters, stories and places that will always stick with the fans.
We are sure many fans, including ourselves are sad to see this chapter of Hedgehog history come to an end. We will keep on top of any future updates on what SEGA does in the comic industry next.

After over 24 years in a near-continuous run, it appears there are some very strong signals that Archie’s Sonic the Comic is set to be cancelled in the near future. Following phone calls from multiple parties, including members of our own SSMB to Archie’s subscription office, we have learned that they are not taking any more subscriptions pending more information.

The Sonic Stadium has discovered a mysterious Sonic listing on the resume of former Silver the Hedgehog voice actor Pete Capella. The title is Sonic the Hedgehog: Awakening by SEGA Inc and Capella again did voice work for Silver the Hedgehog in it. Unfortunately, that’s all we know, as there don’t appear to be any other signs of the project online. Capella voiced Silver between 2006 and 2009, so it’s pretty safe to assume this title (whatever it is) is dead and buried.

According to a user on the official SEGA forums, former Sonic 4 Brand Manager Ken Balough confirmed that Sonic 4 had a third episode planned, but it was cancelled. He has in the past hinted that a third episode was planned but this is the first time anyone associated with the project has come out and said that the series was to be a trilogy and that the third part was scrapped. Following on from the weeks earlier news that a playable build of Sonic X-Treme had been discovered, there has been a significant update. Sonic Retro member CoolJerk who has been instrumental in the week’s progress has released a small statement regarding what’s happened and what’s going on from now on. Sega are no strangers to doing promotions with fast food chains, I’m sure most Sonic fans out there are familiar with the many McDonalds or Burger King toys which accompanied kids meals back in the 90’s. Well… it seems that there was another line of toys planned for Burger King, however for whatever reason the line was cancelled.
The documentation which came to light earlier this week shows that the toyline was going to be very extensive, the following toys were planned to be included.
* Walk em’ Sock Em Knuckles (No that’s not a typo, it’s really called ‘Walk’ and not Whack’)
Rip Roaring Robotnik
Twistin’ Twirlin’ Tails
Go Gamma Go
Somersaultin’ Snowboardin’ Sonic
Super Sonic Sled
Frog-Catchin’ Cat
Noisy Amy!
Knuckles Goes for a Spin
Turbo Prop Tails
Aside from the odd names, some of the toys look quite cool for meal toys, some however look… well… look…
I almost wanted to save this for Freak Out Friday, What’s going on with the artwork/look of Amy!? It looks like something you’d find in Demon’s Souls!
However there are one or two awesome looking toys in the documents, Gamma for instance looks great.
And who wouldn’t want a rocking action big the cat?
What I like about a number of these designs is that a few of them come with some smaller accessories or additional bits, for example, the Robotnik toy comes with a smaller Sonic figure, and the Knuckles spin toy also has Robotnik chasing him.
Sadly there are no models of these toys, it seems that these were scrapped at the design stage.

Following recent hiccups and internal setbacks, S2HD’s Project Leader Vincent has officially announced on the game’s Facebook page that there will be no more development on the project. This decision was in fact made over 2 months ago, but the team wanted to at least get the Alpha demo out for their dedicated supporters to enjoy. Read the full statement after the jump.
