SonictheHedgehog4.com Launches

So now we’ve all thoroughly enjoyed the Sonic the Hedgehog 4 reveal, let’s explore the other thing that was launched today – the official Sonic the Hedgehog 4 website. Sega are really milking the whole ‘drip-feed’ philosophy here, and that translates well to the official website, which has loads and loads of information sections… locked out.

Yes, the plan is to open more pages over time to maintain interest. Nothing wrong with that, really – curiously, many sections come locked with a countdown timer across where you would expect the link to be. Here are the times of the supposed reveals, and the headers they come under;

 • Game Info: Friday 5th February, 11am GMT
 • Characters: Tuesday 9th February, 11am GMT
 • Concept Art: Thursday 11th February, 10am GMT
 • Multimedia: Thursday 18th February, 11am GMT

There’s also a secret regarding a fourth platform. Sonic 4 is already confirmed for WiiWare, PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade. What could the fourth platform (or service be)? It could very well be a PC distribution platform such as Steam, but Sega could just as easily be planning a handheld version for the PSP or something. Looks like it’s for the Apple iPhone. Who knew?

Besides the teases, everything on the website seems to be what we know already – 9/9/09 teaser trailer, badnik concept art and all. Stick with us and have a party when each of these sections get revealed – I know we’ll all be huddled around a computer until the time. Will you?

Fan Strip Spotlight: Timing is Everything

Heres something we all know: Seaside Hill has proven to be a very popular location in the recent Sonic games: Sega All Stars Racing and Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympics. However, with ASR coming out this month, and with the Olympics in exactly a week, one has to wonder: why is an area like Seaside Hill so popular? This fan strip tries to find the answer…

-AAAAH (splat)
Years of smug smiling on Mario's part finally does him in...

This strip is from the Sonic Eggs filler series, Sonic Egg Whites, which you can find here.

It was written by Shigamado, known around TSS as “Jason the Jackass”, and pencilled by Greg the Cat, who’s work you can find at his DA.

Sonic and Mario’s Awkward Reunion

CollegeHumor’s newest video game short centers around Mario and Sonic meeting up at a restaurant, but not in the way that you’d think.  Sonic is the waiter and a conversation ensues about the hedgehog’s mediocre-to-terrible track record since the fall of the Dreamcast.  Sometimes, the truth hurts… and is hilarious.

Is This A Screenshot of “Sonic 4?”

People have been sending us “Sonic 4” images on occasion to try and get us to post a SUPER AWESOME BULLETIN IN-DEPTH EXPOSE EXCLUSIVE or call some “friends” of ours to figure it out for us because we’re too stupid to see that it’s fake ourselves.  Well, we haven’t been doing that.  But, since we’re in the Hedgehog Week festivities… I might as well post two of the better “Sonic 4” hoaxes that we’ve received.

This image was sent to us a few times but it was never sent by its author, Luis Tejeda.

No idea what the hell this image in and who sent it in.  Still cool to look at, I guess.

Guest Blog: Happy Hedgehog Day!

Hello, and happy Hedgehog Day, everyone!

What’s that? A parody of Groundhog Day? Oh! No, I’m not referring to the Needlemouse reveal today, I’m just calling Hedgehog Day what it is! You see, this isn’t just some Sonical propaganda going on! It really was originally called “Hedgehog Day!”

Let me share a little history with you…

Long before Groundhog Day had ever been declared a holiday, the Romans had celebrated a similar event thousands of years ago, every February 2nd, in hopes of predicting the weather. Or at least when winter was going to end! But instead of a groundhog, they observed a hedgehog. Really, it’s true! The hedgehog, coming out of hibernation, sees his shadow (only during a clear moon) the Romans were able to decide whether or not we’d be seeing Spring anytime soon.

Now, we all know no small insectivore has a say over the weather, but it’s an interesting fact to know that over in the land shaped like a boot, they looked towards the not-so-well-known hedgehog for guidance.

But, why do we observe the much chunkier and less cool hedgehog? Well, when the holiday was brought to North America, it turns out that there are no abundance of these little sentient pin cushions. So we went with the closest thing, the groundhog!

So, on this glorious Hedgehog Day, think about how important the creature really was back then. And hey, we may be able to thank a certain blue one for making the hedgehog popular in the states, like it deserves. Maybe we can go for a name change, finally? And maybe Sonic’s rival should have been a groundhog. Here’s looking at you, Shadow.

Sonic Relief 2010 kicked off a few weeks back to help support Sport Relief 2010 and already we’ve raised a total of £134.00 thanks to a very kind Alex Peal who donated £128 and Gavin Storey who donated £6 and £1.69 to Gift Aid. A £6 donation isn’t all Gavin (also known as Gavvie at the SSMB) has done though, he’s also created an official charity album for the cause containing remixes of various tracks from all your favourite Sonic games.

Aswell as his Gavvie online tag Gavin also goes by the name Living Sedative in which he has previously created 3 other albums under so he has experience in the field of music and it certainly shows in this charity album which he has titled Songs For Sonic.

The album consists of 21 tracks

2. Mega Metropolis 02:55
3. On the Top of the Hill 03:02

So far Gavin has raised £6 for the cause from this album and after giving it a listen myself it is well worth paying money to charity for.

Thanks again to Alex Peal and Gavin for their donations and support for our cause, we will keep you updated on futher Sonic Relief 2010 developments. Meanwhile if you’d like to donate to the cause you can at our JustGiving page, we also have a competition to show our appreciation for those donations where you can submit ‘Something Sonic and sporty’ for Charity. SonicVerseTeam rises from the grave!

In March of 1999,  the world’s first Sonic fan comic website was founded by Jason “Sonic Adventurer” Torres. Over the course of the next several years, the website would balloon in popularity, playing host to some of the best pieces of fan art and fan fiction available from the (often surprisingly talented) Sonic fandom. Comics such as “Collision Chaos”, “Other-M”, “Tete-A-Tete”, “Mayshing Comics”, and “Sapphire Luna Comics” help demonstrate just what the fandom was capable of. In it’s best days, the website even ran an online based Sonic comic convention similar to SAGE, in which people from across the fandom would set up websites and show off their work, in hopes of getting both attention from the community at large, and awards from SVT. Archie creatives such as Ian Flynn and Dubs even did work for the site years before they became proffesionals on the actual, official comic. You can catch their collaboration in the short lived web comic “3B”.

Though the website  fell into disrepair years ago, it seems SVT is finally ready to return from the grave, complete with a new team of people ready to lead it into the next decade. If you guys feel like helping them out, be sure to let them know on their forums!

Now, I’d like to leave you with a page from Collission Chaos, a comic from Fireball20xl’s own Hyper, currently available on SVT:

Not the best example of the website’s art or writing, but when it came to the best single page I could use to try and get you guys over there, this was the one the came to mind.

Enjoy!

Want Lego Batman In ASR?

“Sega/Waner Bros. Int”
So according to this chart Sega had something to do with Lego Batman, so it’s possible to get Lego Batman in ASR as DLC. Come on people, this need’s to happen! Lead Environment Artist at Sumo Digital for ASR under his SumoRex tag over at SEGA forums is up for it –

LOL I’m game for that. Maybe, to be ironic, he could drive a car made from meccano too?

But seriously, that game was developed by Travellers Tales and published by Warner Bros so…WTF?

The Escapist Riffs on Sonic Unleashed

The Escapist’s “Unskippable” series takes a look at game cutscenes and adds a Mystery Science Theater 3000-style commentary track.  Their latest in this series skewers the opening cutscene of Sonic Unleashed.  Is it funny?  Eh… it’s hit and miss.  I did think that the “super realism for a cartoon blue hedgehog” line was pretty funny.

Random: ASR Get’s It’s Own Version of a Rick Roll

YouTube user frikyvk has given Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing it’s own version of a Rick Roll by luring in people who are after a YouTube version of yesterdays ASR Wii trailer by tagging the above video with ‘ SONIC & SEGA ALL STARS RACING WII TRAILER ‘ so the video comes up in the findings when you search for the trailer.

The video seems to be a Spanish advert for a countdown to an announcement Orange and LG are making soon on the website for this. So hop to it and Sonic & SEGA All Star Ambassador your friends, family and enemies. It works, I fell for it myself.

You Know You’ve Read Too Much Sonic The Comic When…

…your walls look like this.

If that isn’t hardcore fandom then I don’t know the meaning of the words. This whole mural was created by an artist in Edinburgh named John Arnott and spans all four walls of the bedroom. It’s pretty awesome but I don’t think I’d have it done to my bedroom.

Sunday Poll: “waits 4 needlemouse infos”

Nothing ever happens on Sundays.  You come here, usually shit ain’t goin’ on Sundays and you’re all like “pfffft, that sucks.”  Here’s a chance to do something about that, I guess.  I’m going to start doing this every Sunday.  The first Sunday poll question is:

With all the drama, leaks, and general bullshit around Project Needlemouse, how desperate are you to know anything about the game?

 1. Extremely Desperate.  I’ve ruined three pairs of pants.
 2. Desperate.  My pants are literally bulging.
 3. Moderate.  I feel a small sensation downstairs.
 4. Not Desperate.  I’d like more concrete information before getting tight.
 5. Don’t Give a Shit.  Self-explanatory.

eBay Watch: Rare 3D Electronic SEGA Sonic Sign

Now isn’t that a bobby dazzler? (What? Nobody uses that term anymore?) A rare piece of Sonic merchandise that was most likely used to advertise Sonic’s early games has hit eBay and it’s in pretty good condition according to the seller who describes it as the following –

MORE INFO by tuesday PLEASE DO NOT BID till more photos and info added thanks-This is in as new condition in as much it has only been turned on once by me today in its retail lifetime, i bought this ten years ago from a clearance and it was old stock, this dates possibly 1980’s will advise later in auction, i believe its a shop sign, quite heavy, full working order with a 3 D type effect when light, really bright and eye catching when lit . This is a very rare item, thanks.

Tuesday has passed and there’s been no update to the description since the 18th Jan but judging by all of the photographs it’s in great condition and look’s like a gem that would sparkle in any fan’s collection. If you have the GBP 175.00 starting bid the seller is asking for and the GBP 28.00 shipping fee then you should get in there quick before the legendary hat wearing Sonic fan known as T-Bird get’s his mitts on it. The price could go up though as it’s being sold via auction, bidding ends in 7 days 9 hours from the time of this post.

“More” Needlemouse Concept Art

Remember the Shellcracker concept art that SEGA revealed last week for Project Needlemouse?  Well, one fan has decided to draw up some more in that style.  This time, it’s one of Shellcracker’s running buddies, Slicer, the biggest dick in the entire game.  Looks pretty official to me, but I’ll let you be the judge:

GamesRadar On Needlemouse: Highly Anticipated & Doomed To Fail

GamesRadar may be familiar to some Sonic fans thanks to their extremely harsh treatment of SEGA’s mascot. Staunch supporters of older Sonic games writers for the site have documented the hedgehogs fall from grace in graphic detail, labeling his kiss with Elise in Sonic 06 as their reason for taking a swing at Sonic and his friends every chance they get.

Their viewpoint on Sonic isn’t an unusual one in the mainstream gaming press, but while some persecute without remorse, reading thorough the various lists compiled on GamesRadar you can’t help but feel that at least a small part of them yearns for an exceptional Sonic game. Over a year ago now one of their writers stated the only way for SEGA to remedy the problem would be to “Take a cue from Mega Man 9 – make Sonic 4 and bring back Blast Processing.”

Capcom's revival of Mega Man has been so successful it's spawned another retro sequel. It's not a stretch to think SEGA saw this and started work on a classic revival of their own.

Over a year later and GamesRadar aren’t getting exactly what they asked for but it’s close enough and what little we know about Project Needlemouse has them excited,

“So we know it’s 2D. We know it’s HD (which rules out Wii). We know it’s clearly focused on speed and old-school feel based on the sound effects and specific blue-blur animations. By all accounts, this is it folks, the game we’ve been asking for since the late ‘90s. And you know what? We’re ready to bite… almost.”

It’s with that in mind I want to bring your attention to two of their newest lists. The first details their top 100 most anticipated games of 2010. Project Needlemouse sits pretty at number 50.

“The very name sends shivers down our spines. Why? Because Sonic was called Mr Needlemouse internally at Sega before he was called Sonic. This is it – the game where they make Sonic like it’s 1991, only now they’ve got Xbox 360 and PS3 hardware to do it with. Time and time again, our hopes are dashed, but if ever one last fragile hope burned in the void, it’s in the shape of this game. And it has to be perfect. Nothing less will do.”

The well wishing doesn’t last very long. Only a few days later Project Needlemouse appeared on a very different list; Games that are doomed to die in 2010.

“Sonic is historically an automatic seller. After years of slow franchise death, does anyone really give a crap about the little blue bugger anymore? At this point, anyone who does care probably isn’t interested in the Sonic of yesteryear, and anyone who cared about Sonic when he was at the top of the industry has had his passion destroyed by this:

The worst moment in a Sonic game? The worst game in the Sonic series? Many think so.

Claiming Needlemouse is doomed to fail strikes me as being a very premature statement. Firstly there are precious few actual facts to base an opinion on and secondly, dismissing a legion of loyal Sonic fans is a very dangerous thing to do. GamesRadar may end up eating their words with this one. What do you lot think, let me know on the comments!

Sonic Spotted On WWE Monday Night Raw

First darts.  Now… wrestling?

If you like wrestling, you probably were smart like me and switched off the Slammy Awards 3-hour special immediately due to its lack of anything interesting (aka good wrestling).  One thing that I guess I missed out on is some dude in the crowd dressed as Sonic getting high fives from Maria.

In reality, did I really miss out?  I mean, I would have to sit through a Divas match to see the 3-seconds of a dude in a Sonic costume.  That’s rough, yo.  Here’s a video of Sonic in the crowd (he appears at the 0:23 mark; I made sure that you didn’t have to watch the awful match that preceded it):

TSS AT WAR: Project Needlemouse

Things are bad at The Sonic Stadium. Real bad. The staff members are at war. Over the last week, we have been constantly fighting over one hot topic. A topic that has been so controversial that it makes your eyes burn and your skin itch.

Who will be in Project Needlemouse?

With only five names left to go, tensions are higher than ever with TSS staff. Oh, if only there was some way you could know the sort of arguments we’re having, gentle reader. It’s pandemonium! With each staffer backing a different character, you can just imagine the chaos that’s taking place. Here’s a mere snippet of our conflict:

Dreadknux

Guys, guys! Can we please just chill the hell out!?

Shadzter

No way! I think Sonic should be in because he has the most experience at being a Needle pimping mouse!! If it weren’t for him we wouldn’t even have this fanbase, the bunny with the stretchy ears idea? We don’t need any of that, how many game’s has Bugs Bunny starred in huh? Can he curl up in a ball? Sure he can run fast but can he break the sound barrier? No? I didn’t think so. Carrot munching? How about Chilli Dog munching? Now that’s hard core, Sonic’s got one tough belly. Take that you guys!

Paul Street

Hell no, it’s got to be Shadow! I mean think about it, it hasn’t been easy being the “Ultimate Life Form”. His best friend Maria died, he was left to rot in a G.U.N base for 50 years and then there was something about aliens that I’m going to totally ignore. But when it comes right down to it Shadow is a bad-ass and if any character in the Sonic cast will benefit from a back to basics 2D game it’s him.

Forget all of the silliness and remember how cool you felt grinding the bridge in Radical Highway being persued by the news choppers. If you strip back on the stupid back story and concentrate on navigating a level looking as cool as possible then it doesn’t get much cooler than the black and red hedgehog zipping through levels on his rocket skates. That is why Shadow needs to be in Project Needlemouse and if he doesn’t make it, I’ll eat my hat! (Or not, as I don’t own a hat).

Plus being a Sonic re-colour he’ll be easy to fit in knowing know how lazy the Sonic Team are. Oh snap!

T-Bird

I think you guys are WAAAAY off the mark. Everybody loved Vector so much in the Olympic games that SEGA decided they’d made a massive mistake cutting the bling-bling Crocodile from Sonic 1 in the never-to-happen sound test. Needlemouse is supposed to be going back to the oldschool right? I mean REAL oldschool! Then it makes sense they’d put in this guy…nothing would give me more joy than sliding through tight spaces with this dude.

Dreadknux

T-Bird, Vector’s not in the running anymore.

T-Bird

Oh. Well, I think you guys are still WAAAAY off the mark. Everybody loved Vector Amy so much in the Olympic games that SEGA decided they’d made make a massive mistake cutting the bling-bling Crocodile love interest from Sonic 1 Needlemouse in the never-to-happen sound test Shower scene. Needlemouse is supposed to be going back to the oldschool right? I mean REAL oldschool! Then it makes sense they’d put in this guy girl…nothing would give me more joy than sliding through tight spaces with this dude. (edited for younger readers).

Dreadknux

T-Bird, Amy’s not in it anymore.

T-Bird

Screw you all then, I reckon it’s Froggy. Why? Sorry, I don’t know. We are simply Na-tur-al.

JayZeach (Radio DJ)

Wait, you can’t do that! I wanted to pick Froggy! He is clearly the best character in the world, small, covert, able to get wherever he wants. It matters not that he was caught in the past because soon, he will…TAKE OVER THE WORLD, mwahahahaha, using his Sidekick Big The Cat as muscle of course.

Brad Flick

I’m backing Mr. Needlemouse all the way, because he has a kick-ass website. Go chug one, a-holes.

nuckles87

KNUCKLES, DAMMIT. KNUCKLES THE MOTHER****ING ECHIDNA. HE DON’T NEED TO BE ON NO STINKING LIST. He’ll force his presence into this through the sheer power of echidna!

Billy Bob (from behind the boiler)

Well, good golly gilly gob bam, ah dohn’ kno’ much abaht no Sawnic da Hidgehawg, no’ssir. Ah just com ‘ere ta fix yaw boilah. C’n I pik Boilah Man?

Dreadknux

What the-? No, because Boiler Man doesn’t exist. Where the hell did you come from anyway?

Billy Bob

Texas.

Dreadknux

No, I mean where in this area have you been hiding all this time?

Billy Bob

…Boilah. Ah… Ah fix da boilah.

Dreadknux

We need better security in here. Enough of that, I’ve already determined who’s going to win, and it’s certainly none of the losers you losers have picked. Losers. Everybody knows that it’s all about our saviour of the Sonic series, Big the Cat. Goddamn, that cat is pimpin’. Everything you know and love rests within that rotund vessel of consciousness.

Think about it. SEGA could totally remake Sonic the Hedgehog from the Mega Drive, only it will be in HD and instead of Sonic, you have Big the Cat, blanky busting badniks as he cannonballs down hills and destroys half of Eggman’s machines and pinball tables with his ultra-bulk. Think of Buzzbombers in normal Sonic 1 size, and then playing as a sprite three times that size. Because Big is so big, he can be the all-seeing destructor of evil.

The creator. The Alpha. The Omega. The Purple! It’s a…

Brad Flick

Dude’s out of his nut, man. Is he going to..?

Dreadknux

Oh, it’s a…

Shadzter

He’s going to sing it! Restrain him!!!

Dreadknux

OH IT’S A WINDY AND SUNNY DAAAAA-AHHHH!

… Ahem. Sorry about that. Now you know how bad things can get at TSS Towers. This is the dark side of this website, for sure, and I’m glad you don’t get to see most of it. With hours to go until the last names are struck off, it’s a race against time before we all start killing one another in some kind of Pon Farr ritual (except less sexual). Who do you think will be kept in this list, and why? Why!? WHY!? Pledge yourself against one of the final characters, for great justice! And support him in the comments box!

And don’t forget to answer SEGA’s questions (or make the company a trending topic) on Twitter either.

Needlemouse challenge brings out the funnier side of the Sonic community

Well, this is my first community post. And what better way to commemorate this occasion then to show you a fun little piece of fan work I found on a great little Sega site I like to visit, Sega Shiro. For any SEGA fan who’s tired of the Kartel nonsense over at Sega Nerds, this site offers a nice replacement! Anyway, here it is:

Fan favorite Shadow teams up with the classic gaming duo of Big and Froggy in the name of great justice!

Let us know what you guys think of it in the comments section below. From what I’ve been told this image has been getting everywhere on the internet, but SegaShiro’s source for it is a German Sega Site, SEGAPortal.

Take Your Cards For A Mega Drive

It’s unofficial Mega Drive day here at TSS because I say it is. That and because both Brad and I have found amusing Mega Drive related things for your viewing pleasure. His might literally move but mine can make you look like you mean business, literally.

It’s actually a Mega Drive Card Case which was spotted by the SEGA Twitter people earlier this week. Personally I think it looks great and sort of want one. If only I had any business cards to display. They are available at “Geek Stuff 4 U” and it’s just a guess but I don’t think English is the sites first language. For example, take a read of the description on their site:

“For every geek in you! Hold your business card with style thanks to the latest Banpresto Business card case, the Mega Drive 16-Bit Card Case! Separated in two compartment, one is dedicated to hold your own business card, and the other is design to keep the business card you got during business meeting.”

I swear I’m not making this up! If you want one they are up for pre order on the Geek Stuff 4 U website until January 27th. After than the expected shipping date is ‘March’. The price is ¥2,250.00 which is roughly $24.53 or £15.07 at the time of writing.

So who wants one?
