Sonic the Comic Con Funded, First Guest Announced

A few days ago we brought you the news of a kickstarter to fund a new convention based on Sonic the Comic.

Following that announcement, the convention reached it’s target of £1,400 in under 12 hours, the convention is going to go ahead. In conjunction with this, the organisers have also announced their first stretch goal. If £2,500 is raised before the end of the kickstarter, anyone who has donated more than £12 will receive a specially printed copy of Sonic the Comic.

Our plan is to produce a full colour Sonic the Comic special edition issue, created exclusively for the event, with a brandnew story, poster, Graphic Zone, Speedlines and Control Zone!

ferranFurther to this announcement, the organisers have announced their first special guest who will attend the event. Ferran Rodriguez who was an artist on many of the earlier issues of the comic will be coming all the way from Barcelona to attend the convention. Ferran has previously attended Summer of Sonic 2013 and was very popular with attendees and even gave many budding artists some advice and mini tutorials.

There are still tickets available to this convention, if you’d like to attend, head to the kickstarter page and pledge the £12 minimum contribution in order to get a ticket.

New Sonic Boom Speed Level Video and More New Demo Details from SDCC

While at the San Diego Comic Con, I managed to capture some footage of the new speed level from Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. The demo starts off with Sonic and crew in a cave you can explore a little bit (not shown in the video) from here, you can take off and go through the new speed course which does feature a few obstacles, but only at the beginning and ending. Leaving the cave into the lush jungle is a beautiful scene. What I find odd is that they decided to go with this new, shorter speed level rather than the old one. Especially since this new one has had some glitch issues in every other playthrough. My feet fell through the floor in one, Ben over at Segabits had a similar problem and the guy demoing the game for me fell through into nothingness at one point too. Why rush out a new, not tested enough demo when the old one worked fine and was longer? Oh Well. BTW, if you see some frame skips, that’s from my iPad recording and not the game itself. A small update on the Sonic and Amy Chemical Factory level. I got confirmation from Kellie Parker that my eyes were not deceiving me and that the games graphics have improved a touch over the E3 build. Also, during the cutscene with Quincy, Amy and Quincy’s mouth now move during their conversation. It might have just been me, but while playing the level again, I found more areas with secret items and it made me want to explore the level more. Combat’s still weak though. One other new thing is that while the opening cutscene with Tails and Knuckles is gone, you get more gameplay near the end with another Guardian chase. This time you have to dodge and jump over pipes while running away from the giant robot. The game is starting to grow on me, but don’t get too excited. Right now, it’s gone from a C- to a C+ in my book. That puts it at average licensed video game fare like the mediocre Pac-Man and The Ghostly Adventures.

Sonic the Comic Con Announced

Earlier this year, it was announced that there would be no Summer of Sonic in 2014, news which disappointed many UK Sonic fan.

sonic the comic con

However, a group of fans which include staff behind both Sonic the Comic Online and Summer of Sonic have banded together to announce a new Sonic convention to be held in the UK later this year, based on the popular UK Publication Sonic the Comic.

Sonic the Comic ceased production in the UK back in 2002, however, it is still widely enjoyed by Sonic fans to date and is continued via an online publication run by fans which is still run to date.

Activities to be held on the day include the following.

Meet & Greet with Special Guests: Over the past few weeks and months we have been talking with many of the artists and writers who brought Sonic the Comic to life! We look forward to being able to announce the attendance of these guests at Sonic the Comic Con in the near future!

Art Classes and Tutorials: Our special guests have very kindly agreed to give attendees an opportunity to learn the tricks of the trade! These special sessions will be held throughout the day, to give budding artists a fantastic chance to learn from the best!

Competitions: We hope you will bring your skills along on the day and enter the art and writing contests, and show off your STC-inspired works! We also hope to be able to offer some very special prizes too!

Original Works: A range of original hand-drawn, hand-painted original covers and pages will be on display throughout the day, so you can come and lay your eyes on the incredible work that went into their creation.

Q&A Sessions: Our special guests will be talking about some of their fond memories of working on the comic, as well as answering your burning questions!

However, it needs your help. The convention needs to raise £1,400 in order to go ahead. As explained in the kickstarter this is to help cover the costs of Venue Hire, Equipment Costs and Guest Expenses. More details can be found in the Kickstarter page which I will link you to at the end of the article.

sonic the comic con2

The Kickstarter will also offer rewards to generous backers such as T-Shirts with Richard Elson designed artwork, wristbands and even original artwork. An additional detail is the hint of tier rewards if the goal is met and exceeded.

The convention is a day long event which will be held in the city of York on October 26th 2014 at the Grade 1 listed Merchant Adventurer’s Hall. The event is a ticketed event and making a pledge of £12 gets you into the event (limited to 80 backers). Other pledge values offer T-Shirts and additional reward packages.

Rise of Lyric Comic Con Demo Adds New Level, Drops One

Eggman

While at the San Diego Comic Con today, I decided to head to the Nintendo Lounge to see if the Sonic Boom demo had been updated at all from the E3 build. I found out that there was some differences made since the E3 build. I can honestly say that I did see some improvements made, a brand new level and one omission most likely due to the feedback from E3. Here is a list of the few differences I noticed.

1.) First off, the original speed level has been replaced with a brand new one that starts out in a cave. You can smash some boulders and there’s some small secrets around the cave. Before I hit the boost pad, I was switching around characters and ended up with a glitch where Knuckles and the others were halfway through the floor. I ran up to the front and hit the speed boost and it fixed the glitch. The speed section itself is a bit more difficult. There are more obstacles in the way and at least one or two alternate routes. The level did seem shorter though. I will say the best part was riding the enerbeam out of the cave and into the lush jungle. It was really a breathtaking scene.

2.) There were only three choices for levels compared to the four from E3. This is because they took out the Knuckles mine cart level from the E3 demo. I think it was a wise choice not to show the level that got the most negative reaction from E3 when showing off the game to the public. It’s a very slow and plodding level and they only need to really show one adventure level so it might as well be the more action packed one.

3.) It might just be the TV, but the visuals seem to be a bit improved. The colors really popped out more and the lighting seemed better. The E3 demo’s colors seemed bland but as I said, that could have been the screen too.

4.) Again, it might be me, but lassoing the robots seemed to be a faster experience from before. At least in the Sonic/Amy level. The fight with Eggman seemed exactly the same as before.

And there you have it. New speed level, no Knuckles mine cart level and some slight graphical improvements…..I think. If I hadn’t played the original E3 demo, this would have left me with a slightly more positive view of the game. As of now, my view of the game is just a bit more positive.

More Details Revealed About Archie’s Sonic Boom

The paper adaptation of the upcoming cartoon is starting with a bang!

SonicBoomVar1D

Earlier today, we reported on the Sonic Boom comic sighting on Archie’s comic website. Now, thanks to an exclusive reveal from IGN, the comic is officially confirmed. Not only that, but we know more about how it’ll work when it comes out! Here’s just a few main points from the article itself;

 • The stories in the comic will be stand alone adventures, separate from the cartoon and video games presumably. Despite this, they will be building up to some awesome stuff happening later on.
 • Ian Flynn will be handling writing, as he does for Archie’s Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Universe, while the art will be done by veteran artist Evan Stanley.
 • The first arc will focus on setting the tone for the series and the character relationships between the main cast…and a recurring killer robot.
 • It’s too early to comment on Metal Sonic appearing, and others are up to SEGA, but we’ve been promised plenty of surprises down the line for developing the game characters and mythology.
 • The series is a more casual read which is more focused on comedy and adventure than the main comic’s focus on action-adventure drama. Plenty of pick-up value.
 • Sonic and Tails are pretty unchanged from their main series selves bar their designs, Knuckles is goofier but still has the friendly rivalry that has defined the dynamic between him and Sonic, Amy is the sensible one of the group. at least for the most part.
 • Stick’s personality makes a great addition to the existing cast, according to Kaminski.
 • There’s plenty of Eggman to look forward to.
 • Issue 1 will come with four variants that are styled quite similarly to how the Countdown to Chaos main covers were done!

You can read the whole interview through the link above. We will have more information on the new comic as it is disclosed.

Archie Comics Sonic Boom Title Revealed

Trouble keeps you running faster

Trouble keeps you running faster

Sonic fans, get ready to open your wallets a little more to make room for THREE monthly Sonic titles. While not officially announced yet, Archie Comics own website has a brand new Sonic Boom comic available for subscription with the first issues cover officially revealed. Here’s the official description.

Here comes the BOOM! Get in on the ground floor with the ALL-NEW ONGOING SONIC COMIC BOOK SERIES from Archie Comics based on the new hit TV series and video game: Sonic Boom! This ground-breaking new chapter in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise puts a new “spin” on all your favorite heroes and villains—plus new faces and hilarious new stories chock-full of action—and it’s all brought to you by the folks that bring the hit series Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Universe to you each and every month! Subscribe today and own a piece of Sonic comic history!

But “GASP!” does this mean that Sonic Universe could be cancelled as some have pondered?! The bigger question is, why would it? It’s not like regular, old Archie has a million other titles under his belt and Ian Flynn’s written four books a month before. Not only that, but Sonic X has a had several writers during it’s short tenure. As this is based on a show known for short stories, the basis could be the same here. Myself, I wouldn’t be surprised to see two or three short stories in each issue.

Big thanks to SSMB poster PC The Hedgehog for finding this on Archie’s site.

New Sonic Boom: RoL Details Revealed, Chaos Crystals, Time Travel & More

An E3 2014 demo and interview with Big Red Button’s Mark Vernon has revealed some new details on Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric for Wii U. The previously seen crystals are called ‘Chaos Crystals’ and there are nine of them to collect through the game’s story. Vernon also goes into more detail about the game’s time travel element and reveals that players will go to the past and the future, seeing areas in both times.

The name of the underwater base level played is ‘Ancient Template’ and in this demonstration we get to see some of the hidden areas of the level. Vernon gives us a look at the collectibles menu and a ‘Freeze Rod’ weapon that, as you guessed, freezes enemies in ice. It’s clarified that while these weapons are obtained from enemies, the enemies can’t actually use them and they are one-time limited use only. You can’t store them.

Vernon also explains that collectibles will earn you upgrades, which aren’t just for making your characters stronger, but also unlock new abilities. When asked about a release date, Vernon says he can’t remember the exact date, but it’ll probably be the first half of November. Finally, merchandise fans will want to stick around until the end to have a close look at some of the upcoming Sonic Boom action figures.

SEGAbits Interviews the Voice of Sonic, Roger Craig Smith

We don’t often post about other website’s podcasts, but this is something I’m confident you guys will want to hear. SEGAbits interviewed Roger Craig Smith just a few hours ago, asking some stellar questions about his time as his role as Sonic, in both the games and in the upcoming Sonic Boom TV series.

They do spend some time asking him about his role as Batman (as they were originally contacted by his PR for a Batman centered interview), but the vast majority of the interview is spent talking about his time as Sonic. They asked him some great questions, including the differences between Boom Sonic and SEGA Sonic, his debut as Sonic at Alton Towers, his thoughts on past Sonic VAs, and his history as a voice actor among other things.

So check it out and enjoy! In case you don’t want to listen to it yon Youtube, I’ve included the download links below.

Sonic Boom TV Show Storyboards Depict a Hoverboard Race

boomstoryboard4It seems everybody missed one hell of a leak!

One of the people behind Sonic Boom’s TV adaptation has posted a number of storyboards from the upcoming show on his website. Only the crazy thing… they’ve been on his website for over a year!

That’s right, for over a year several storyboards for Sonic Boom have been fully available to view. And what do they show? Not very much, don’t get excited, they don’t detail any huge spoilers, most of the sequences are from already released material.

The storyboard depicts a sequence between Sonic and Tails discovering Sticks’ house following a hoverboard race. Interestingly, the file name on the original website hints that this is from the 11th episode of the show, if this is indeed how Sticks is introduced, for the first 11 episodes she’ll likely be absent.

Sonic Adventure 2 in Source Filmmaker! I found you, Faker!

Close your eyes and think back to a time when the console wars were coming to a close, Big Blue hit the 10 year mark, and SEGA had released their final bid in keeping the Dreamcast alive – Sonic Adventure 2.

Ooooor you could think back to a time when SEGA fell apart as a first party company, and then went on to port this game onto the Nintendo Gamecube as a third party developer – Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. Either or!

After a case of mistaken identity, wrongful arrest, escaping imprisonment, and breezing through the prison island’s metal harbour, Sonic breaks free into the military patrolled greenery and confronts the doppelgänger hedgehog behind his string of misfortunes. Enter Shadow, the Ultimate Lifeform.

Remember that particular clash? Where blows were finally being dealt, and words were being eaten? Now imagine it in high def.

Hypo, who first recreated the Giant Talking Egg scene from Sonic Adventure, gave the sequel’s Faker scene the Source Filmmaker treatment. Everything from the initial encounter to the brawl itself, as well as the aftermath, has been remastered for your viewing pleasure – perfect for a nostalgia fix!

Sonic 2’s Lost Holographic Cartridge Labels

sonic2holograph2

Now this is an interesting bit of unknown history. According to Al Nilsen, who at the time was the Director of Marketing for Sega of America back in the 90’s has revealed an unknown tid bit regarding Sonic 2’s release. That being, the cartridges were to be a little different to the usual cartridges which were out on the market. Sega had planned to make Sonic 2’s cartridge stand out from the crowd.

sonic2holograph1

Sonic 2 had a rather large marketing campaign behind it known as Sonic 2’s day and a scrapped plan was for the initial release of games to have holographic cartridge labels. Mr Nilsen recently showed off the labels via twitter and said that the reason they didn’t go ahead is that it was too costly.

From Friday December 5th until Monday 20th April, the National Museum of Scotland will be the host of the Game Masters video game exhibition. This is an exhibition which will…

Feature over 100 playable games covering a period which has seen video games evolve from a niche interest to a massively popular leisure activity, international cultural art form and a global commercial entertainment industry.

And as well as playing the games, visitors will discover more about game design and development through rare original game artwork, 2D objects and interviews with game designers.

So why am I telling you about this? Well, Sonic is going to be there in some form.

According to the museum, part of the exhibition will look at the console revolution and will feature the work of key designers including Yuji Naka and the team behind Sonic the Hedgehog.

According to the press release, this will be the only European venue for this event, so if you want to see it, better head up to Scotland come December. Or if you can’t make it, be sure to check out our report on it when December rolls around, yup, we’ll be heading up to this one.
