Spindash.de Previews ASR: Game At One Time Had ‘Showtime Events’ Feature Proposed

UPDATE: Steve Lycett under his S0L tag has over at the SSMB cleared up the Showtime Events part of the preview –

Showtime Events eh?

Ages ago we did have something like that as one design proposal – where through the race the commentator would announce something to mix things up – but it never went into the game proper. I think you can safely ignore that one!

S0L

/UPDATE END

Original artice below –

Sonic fansite Spindash.de have posted up what’s labelled on their front page as a preview of Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing but links to more a general information page for the game.

The following translated information is listed –

It will either be represented · some Sonic characters and some familiar characters from Sega Franchais.
· Richard Jacques (Sonic R, Sonic Chronicles), the music composed. Bentley Jones sings the title song “So much more.
· On all consoles online use there should be a Onlinemutliplayer mode, where you can race with 8 players against each other. Local multiplayer can be four players to play against each other. Probably it is in online mode, the DS version to play only four of us can.
· Overall, there will be 20 characters and 24 tracks
Each character has their own vehicle, including race cars, monster truck, motorcycle and much more.
· All-star action: Each character has a special ability that helps him catch up if it is a little further back. Sonic turns into Super Sonic, Beat can go on his skates, etc.
· Showtime events: This can also be used if one lagging and it affects all the other drivers, in total there are 26 Showtime events. These include for example Reverse a Roo, Little Big Lap and Melee Madness
After each race you earn · Sega miles, can be used in a shop for more characters, tracks and songs to buy.
· There is a narrator who describes what is happening on the track. Who does not want him to hear, you can disable it.
· In the single player there is next to the Grand Prix calls a mission mode and a Time Trial.
· In an Art History section you can about all the characters and their field games

Bolded are the points we’ve not heard much about such as the History section which as far as I’m aware has only been briefly mentioned and not much about what it contains.

The SEGA Miles currency to buy more characters, tracks and music is re-affirmed.

Completely new are the Showtime Events which translate poorly but we can gather that they apparently help with lagging(in online races maybe?), there are 26 of them and they each have names such as Reverse a Roo, Little Big Lap and Melee Madness. For now if they are actually in the game we’ll have to wait until more information is revealed to clear things up. We’ll update you when we know more.

Sonic Boxer Shorts Available at River Island

We’ve seen t-Shirts, socks and pajamas available at various retailers and now another clothing retailer River Island are stocking Sonic the Hedgehog themed boxer shorts. Modelled by the lovely E.T. above we see they stick to the current retro trend in Sonic the Hedgehog merchandise with some snazzy tropical colours you would normally expect from beach shorts.

The boxer shorts retail for £9.99 on River Islands website and come in sizes, small, medium and large. Those who require Extra Large are out of luck.

Do you plan on purchasing the boxer shorts? Let us know in the comments. First to make an ‘underhog’ comment get’s a cookie.

It’s 100% Official: SEGA Becomes Exclusive Video Game Partner of Alton Towers

You may recall us exclusively reporting on an Alton Tower’s ride getting a Sonic the Hedgehog rebranding for launch in February, well now it’s official with the following SEGA Europe press release and photo’s-

LONDON (TBC January, 2010) – SEGA® Europe Ltd today announced an exciting three year partnership with Alton Towers Resort, the most popular theme park in the UK. The deal, which gives SEGA the exclusive videogame rights at the resort, also marks the first time a videogame character has been given their own ‘Ride and Stay’ experience at the popular UK attraction.

The sponsorship will encompass the launch of a Sonic The Hedgehog branded rollercoaster and Sonic The Hedgehog themed room at the Alton Towers Hotel. The Sonic hotel room allows guests to live, sleep and even play the latest games from the Sonic franchise in a room dedicated to the famous Sonic videogame universe. The rollercoaster, entitled Sonic Spinball, and the Sonic hotel room will open to the public on 13th February 2010.

“We are delighted to be working with Merlin Entertainments and Alton Towers Resort” commented Amanda Farr, SEGA Europe UK Marketing Director. “Partnering Sonic with one of the UK’s most popular destinations for a family day out is a fantastic opportunity for people to engage, and have fun, with the Sonic brand. I’ll certainly be there at the launch of the rollercoaster to have my turn!”

Morwenna Angove, Sales and Marketing Director at the Alton Towers Resort, said: “It’s a great joint venture between the Alton Towers Resort and SEGA. The affiliation of both brands will add to the great family offering at the Resort for kids seeking fabulous family fun and adrenalin addicted adults”.

Sonic The Hedgehog has starred in a number of videogames since his first appearance on the SEGA Mega Drive back in 1991, his next videogame outing will be Sonic and SEGA All-stars Racing, launching Feb 26th 2010.

[Update] RUMOUR: Dutch Fansite ‘Leaks’ Needlemouse Details?

Earlier today, Dutch fansite SegaOnline posted information from an anonymous source claiming to have insider knowledge of Project Needlemouse’s development. The website ran the story as a rumour earlier today, before mysteriously disappearing from view.

Key details that were revealed to SegaOnline included the game’s name, ‘Sonic 4’; that the game will only be released on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network; and that this will be the first in a series of similar games. The website’s source claims that the game will be titled “Sonic 4: Episode 1”, but says that despite the implications, each ‘Episode’ will be a full game in its own right.

On top of this, the anonymous source has said there will be 7 Chaos Emeralds, a return of the ‘Zone’ and ‘Acts’ level structure, and that the game will begin in ‘Splash Hill Zone’ and finish in ‘E.G.G. Station Zone’.

As you might expect, this could be either a hot leak from someone within Sega (or with close ties to the company) that’s about to have the hounds set on him, or it’s part of an elaborately hilarious trolling. Either way, the SegaOnline story has since disappeared. It was originally located here – now a 404 Error page sits in its place.

This is not the first time that SegaOnline has had supposedly ‘leaked’ material removed shortly after publication – earlier this month the website had posted images from the Xbox 360 ‘Partnernet’ developer service, which detailed information on a port of Sonic Adventure DX on Xbox Live Arcade. It was suggested that Sega had sent a request to shut down the page.

UPDATE: Perhaps an elaborate trolling is in fact afoot? The story was picked up by TSSZ News, who has just recently received a request to remove the information by SegaOnline, and not Sega, and now the authenticity of the story has been thrown up into the air. TSSZ News writer Tristan Bresnen posted on the Sonic Retro forums;

“There is anger. That’s all I feel comfortable saying publicly right now about the authenticity of the story…at least until I can dig a little deeper.”

If this is all part of a game on the Sonic community at large, we tip our collective hat to you, sir/madam. Well played. Doesn’t affect us at TSS either way, but still – well played. If not, then what to make of it all? Let us know in the comments box below. In the meantime, we’ll just sit here and eat some popcorn and watch the whole thing play out.

ASR Wii Wheel Bundle Cost’s £5 More Than Solo Edition

UK retailers are listing 2 edition’s of the Wii version of Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing, the Wii Wheel bundle and a solo version without the wheel. It appears the Wheel won’t be a freebie as the Wii Wheel bundle is listed at GAME for example at £34.99 and the solo version at £29.99 making the bundle £5 dearer. The bundle packaging doesn’t say it’s free and I don’t believe SEGA ever said it would be free so no-one can complain.

Gamestation are listing both the Wii Wheel bundle and the solo edition at £29.99.

Gameplay.co.uk are being very generous and listing both versions at the same price of £27.99 –

RUMOR: Is Project Needlemouse “Sonic 4?”

So, I went on Sonic Retro a second ago and got a link to a 1UP article about the “games that they’re dying to see.” Project Needlemouse is on the list.  Here’s what they said:

Here’s what people already know about the game: it centers on only Sonic, it’s going to be 2D, it’s in HD, and it’ll be coming to Xbox Live and PSN. Here’s what they don’t know: it’s Sonic the Hedgehog 4. At least, that’s how it’s considered internally at Sega — whether it’ll have some other name when it ships, we’re not sure. But from its 2D gameplay to its focus on just the character we actually give a shit about, this is the Sonic game we’ve been waiting for since we moved on from the Sega Genesis. Let’s just hope this doesn’t all sound too good to be true — the second we see a Weresonic or Sonic’s fat purple friend we’re calling bullshit on the whole thing.

You call bullshit, 1UP?  Nah, I call bullshit on you.  Sonic 4?  You know just as much about Project Needlemouse as the rest of us: nothing.  We got crabs.

Each commenter gets a bonus point if they post a link to a “Sonic the Hedgehog 4” fangame.

SEGA & Playtech Partner Up for Online Poker

Cardplayer.com is reporting that gaming licensor and developer Playtech has reached a deal with SEGA to create SEGApoker.com and SEGAcasino.com, online suites of SEGA-themed card and casino games.

Obviously, SEGAcasino will feature casino games and classic and SEGApoker will have card games that support 35,000-person tournament play.

Mor Weizer, CEO of Playtech, said, “SEGA is one of the most highly respected brands in gaming today and the brands name speaks for itself. We’re ecstatic to have reached this agreement with SEGA Games Limited.”

“With our integrated platform and enhanced games suite, we feel that we’ve given them the tools to expand their product offering, provide a secure and safe gaming experience, and ultimately bring greater value to the SEGA community.”

Official SEGA Genesis Emulator Coming to iPhone

In a surprise turn of a events, SEGA is re-releasing the Genesis games on another platform.  The iPhone isn’t foreign to SEGA, but it’s a little bit different this time around.  In a stroke of genius (yes, I said “genius”), SEGA will be releasing an official emulator for the iPhone with its own store, allowing you to purchase ROMs.  With the iPhone App Store becoming obnoxiously bigger every day, SEGA’s plan to break free and sell their games within its own store is a smart idea.  The emulator will come packaged with Space Harrier II and with the ability to purchase four additional titles:

• Sonic the Hedgehog: $5.99
• Golden Axe: $4.99
• Ecco the Dolphin: $2.99
• Shining Force: $2.99

Will you pay $6 for the original Sonic (again)?  Will the emulator recognize the Sonic app that was released last year?  Will lag be present in these emulations?  All these questions and more should be answered when the app releases later this year.

eBay Watch: Rare 3D Electronic SEGA Sonic Sign

Now isn’t that a bobby dazzler? (What? Nobody uses that term anymore?) A rare piece of Sonic merchandise that was most likely used to advertise Sonic’s early games has hit eBay and it’s in pretty good condition according to the seller who describes it as the following –

MORE INFO by tuesday PLEASE DO NOT BID till more photos and info added thanks-This is in as new condition in as much it has only been turned on once by me today in its retail lifetime, i bought this ten years ago from a clearance and it was old stock, this dates possibly 1980’s will advise later in auction, i believe its a shop sign, quite heavy, full working order with a 3 D type effect when light, really bright and eye catching when lit . This is a very rare item, thanks.

Tuesday has passed and there’s been no update to the description since the 18th Jan but judging by all of the photographs it’s in great condition and look’s like a gem that would sparkle in any fan’s collection. If you have the GBP 175.00 starting bid the seller is asking for and the GBP 28.00 shipping fee then you should get in there quick before the legendary hat wearing Sonic fan known as T-Bird get’s his mitts on it. The price could go up though as it’s being sold via auction, bidding ends in 7 days 9 hours from the time of this post.

SEGA Europe’s Hats For Haiti Raises £780

While the Sonic Community begins its charity drive for Sports Relief, SEGA Europe has banded together to raise money for another cause – the victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti’s capital, Port-Au-Prince. The company staged a Hats For Haiti fundraiser, which saw employees donate for the opportunity to wear silly hats.

The initiative raised £780 for the cause, which will help provide aid to those who need it most in Haiti. The image above is a group photo of the turnout, with even Sonic making an appearance (albeit in half-a-head form). According to ArchAngelUK, the canteen served “‘H’ related food” which included hot dogs and hamburgers.

If you wish to help contribute to the emergency appeal, you can donate via the Red Cross website.

Remember the Shellcracker concept art that SEGA revealed last week for Project Needlemouse?  Well, one fan has decided to draw up some more in that style.  This time, it’s one of Shellcracker’s running buddies, Slicer, the biggest dick in the entire game.  Looks pretty official to me, but I’ll let you be the judge:

GamesRadar On Needlemouse: Highly Anticipated & Doomed To Fail

GamesRadar may be familiar to some Sonic fans thanks to their extremely harsh treatment of SEGA’s mascot. Staunch supporters of older Sonic games writers for the site have documented the hedgehogs fall from grace in graphic detail, labeling his kiss with Elise in Sonic 06 as their reason for taking a swing at Sonic and his friends every chance they get.

Their viewpoint on Sonic isn’t an unusual one in the mainstream gaming press, but while some persecute without remorse, reading thorough the various lists compiled on GamesRadar you can’t help but feel that at least a small part of them yearns for an exceptional Sonic game. Over a year ago now one of their writers stated the only way for SEGA to remedy the problem would be to “Take a cue from Mega Man 9 – make Sonic 4 and bring back Blast Processing.”

Capcom's revival of Mega Man has been so successful it's spawned another retro sequel. It's not a stretch to think SEGA saw this and started work on a classic revival of their own.

Over a year later and GamesRadar aren’t getting exactly what they asked for but it’s close enough and what little we know about Project Needlemouse has them excited,

“So we know it’s 2D. We know it’s HD (which rules out Wii). We know it’s clearly focused on speed and old-school feel based on the sound effects and specific blue-blur animations. By all accounts, this is it folks, the game we’ve been asking for since the late ‘90s. And you know what? We’re ready to bite… almost.”

It’s with that in mind I want to bring your attention to two of their newest lists. The first details their top 100 most anticipated games of 2010. Project Needlemouse sits pretty at number 50.

“The very name sends shivers down our spines. Why? Because Sonic was called Mr Needlemouse internally at Sega before he was called Sonic. This is it – the game where they make Sonic like it’s 1991, only now they’ve got Xbox 360 and PS3 hardware to do it with. Time and time again, our hopes are dashed, but if ever one last fragile hope burned in the void, it’s in the shape of this game. And it has to be perfect. Nothing less will do.”

The well wishing doesn’t last very long. Only a few days later Project Needlemouse appeared on a very different list; Games that are doomed to die in 2010.

“Sonic is historically an automatic seller. After years of slow franchise death, does anyone really give a crap about the little blue bugger anymore? At this point, anyone who does care probably isn’t interested in the Sonic of yesteryear, and anyone who cared about Sonic when he was at the top of the industry has had his passion destroyed by this:

The worst moment in a Sonic game? The worst game in the Sonic series? Many think so.

Claiming Needlemouse is doomed to fail strikes me as being a very premature statement. Firstly there are precious few actual facts to base an opinion on and secondly, dismissing a legion of loyal Sonic fans is a very dangerous thing to do. GamesRadar may end up eating their words with this one. What do you lot think, let me know on the comments!

Sonic Show: The Marcus Minute, Ep. 1

TSS’ vidcast, The Sonic Show, has a new face… and it’s the face of a generation.

If you were anywhere near SAGE 2009 this past July, you should know Marcus.  He had a few hours of air-time that everybody loved.  If you are unfamiliar with him, here’s his story of how he ended up on The Sonic Show:

Marcus was born in 1995.  Marcus’ first Sonic experience was Sonic Adventure 2 for the Dreamcast.  He didn’t know what a “Genesis” was until last year.  He decided to play the games that started it all.

One day, Marcus decided that he wanted to be like everybody else on YouTube and review classic games.  Nobody watched him and those that actually did hated his guts.  Marcus locked himself in a closet of Shadow plushies and cut his wrists with the instruction manual of Sonic ’06.

We saw him in action and, quite frankly, he’s the best at what he does.  Jay (DiscoPonies), head of the Sonic Show, decided to pick him up.  Marcus emerged from his closet a new man.  Today, we bring you his first review as he takes a retrospective look at the original Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic Relief is back with a bang! Following the unexpected success of last year’s campaign, Sonic Relief 2010 aims to be bigger, better, and more successful!

This year’s campaign aims to raise money for the biennial Sport Relief charity event from Comic Relief, which brings together the worlds of sport and entertainment to raise money to help vulnerable people in both the UK and the world’s poorest countries. You can find out more about Sport Relief by visiting http://www.sportrelief.com/

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?
FAN SUBMISSIONS

The basic premise of the campaign is still the same as last year – do something Sonic for money! Whether you want to draw a picture, sing a song, make a video… literally ANYTHING… then we want to see it! The possibilities are endless!

This year’s theme is “something sporty” to coincide with the charity we are raising money for, but that’s not to say you can’t make it humorous too – as long as your submissions still have some relevance to Sport Relief.

There is one fundamental change to this year though – due to the good ol’ recession, Shadzter and myself won’t be able to do what we did last year whereby a certain amount of money was donated for every submission. Instead, this time we ask if the people submitting could make a small donation along with their submission (only £1 or so will do!). It may seem a bit cheeky, but it’s for a good cause – and there’s something in it for you, too! Each paid submission will be entered into the contest for Best Sonic Relief Submission 2010, and our favourite will win a prize!
*It should be noted that donations are not compulsory, but you will not be entered into the contest if you do not donate*

JUSTGIVING DONATIONS
Sonic Relief 2010 will also utilise JustGiving, a system which allows anyone to make a donation (of however much they wish) to our cause – and the money will go straight to Sport Relief! This enables you to do whatever you like to raise money for Sonic Relief – make a calendar, have a ‘Day in Blue’, participate in a fun run… anything! Raise some cash and then pass it on to us via JustGiving!

Alternatively you can just simply pledge some money via JustGiving. Whether you want to make a set donation no matter what or you want to follow a similar system to last year whereby a certain amount is donated based on how many submissions we receive… well, that’s up to you! We’re giving you every possible option you could ever want to raise money this year!

*You will need a credit or debit card to donate via JustGiving*

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Submissions wishing to be entered into the contest should be sent to shadzter@sonicstadium.org as an attachment or a link (depending on what your submission is), along with some form of proof that you have made a donation to Sonic Relief 2010 (be it a name so that we can check you have donated on our JustGiving page or a print screen of your donation).

Submissions not wishing to be entered into the contest should be posted as normal in the SSMB topic, the same as with last year’s campaign, so that everyone can see them and be inspired by them. Submissions wishing to be entered into the contest can also be posted in the SSMB topic so that we can keep a total of how many submissions have been made to the campaign (in case anyone is planning to donate using a similar system to last year).

The closing date for submissions and donations will be midnight (GMT) on Sunday 21st March 2010 to coincide with the end of the Sport Relief Weekend.

If you have any queries regarding this year’s campaign, do not hesitate to contact either myself or Shadzter and we will do our best to respond.

He did it once, now he’s gone and done it again.  Sonic Retro member n00neimp0rtant assembles 10-minutes of music from just about every Sonic game.  Is it as awesome as the first one?  Uh… yes.

Listen to it, knuckleheads.

Sonic Pajamas Are Surprisingly For Dudes

Over at UK: Resistance, they’ve found a pair of pink pajama bottoms with classic Sonic branded all over.   You can purchase it at UK retail chain “New Look” in the “men’s sleepwear” section.  What?

Purchase them online at the New Look store.

Sonic Spotted On WWE Monday Night Raw

First darts.  Now… wrestling?

If you like wrestling, you probably were smart like me and switched off the Slammy Awards 3-hour special immediately due to its lack of anything interesting (aka good wrestling).  One thing that I guess I missed out on is some dude in the crowd dressed as Sonic getting high fives from Maria.

In reality, did I really miss out?  I mean, I would have to sit through a Divas match to see the 3-seconds of a dude in a Sonic costume.  That’s rough, yo.  Here’s a video of Sonic in the crowd (he appears at the 0:23 mark; I made sure that you didn’t have to watch the awful match that preceded it):

Thanks to AngelCam for spotting this goon.

Needlemouse: Day 5 Prediction

SEGA can’t pull a fast one on me!  I see where they’re going with this project.  My FINAL prediction is…

So, that ends “Needlemouse Week” here at TSS.  Thank you to you readers as well for sitting through our week of fake reveals.  I hope that you enjoyed them.   It looks like my initial prediction was correct.  Let’s celebrate my completely insignificant and easily guessable achievement!  PARTY.
