Sega have revealed their European Winter release schedule. Among the list are popular upcoming titles such as NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, Sonic Rivals 2 and Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus.

Gaming website IGN recently had an interview with Takao Miyoshi of SONICTEAM to talk about the next generation of Phantasy Star games, ahead of the Tokyo Games Show event taking place in Japan.
The interview discusses many new aspects of the game in depth, including the choice of why Phantasy Star Universe was chosen for a PlayStation 2 release rather than XBOX or Gamecube: “We felt that we could reach a wider audience by moving over to the PS2 and the PC… It might be okay to launch PSU on Xbox for the US market, but not for the Japanese market. SONICTEAM have just updated their official website for Phantasy Star Universe, the next-generation in exquisite Rappy Bashing.
The website, as all official SEGA sites with any healthy yield of information pre-release, is in Japanese. Since we don’t have the mental strength to read Japanese yet, there’s not a lot that can be obtained from the story other than guesswork (or the hiring of a translator). The story focus does appear to revolve around items called ‘SEED’ however – which, when studying the “World of Phantasy Star Universe” page, appears to be some sort of plant. As The Sonic Stadium is to be covering E3 2005 almost from the inside out, SONIC NEWS has made room for a TSS article to collate everything that’s already been said, what’s been confirmed, what’s been rumoured. E3 can be a very confusing and somewhat dangerous place for those who haven’t been catching up, so allow this article to hand you all the current information we have, so you get some background knowledge on what Sonic Team has and might be offering.
First of all, let’s base things on SEGA’s Official E3 Lineup. On the Sonic Team side, you have two titles; Phantasy Star Universe and Shadow the Hedgehog.
Phantasy Star Universe is, as the name suggests, the true sequel to Phantasy Star Online. It’s the “next generation” of PSO games. Sonic Team first revealed ‘PSU’ at E3 2004, but raised more questions than answers.

In a press release sent to us by SEGA, the house of Sonic is fast preparing its offering for the E3 2005 event. Most interesting of note is that two BRAND NEW Sonic the Hedgehog games are set to be announced.
“SEGA is also fully supporting PC, handheld, and current-generation users with AAA titles like Spartan: Total Warrior (PlayStation 2, Xbox, Nintendo GameCube), Shadow The Hedgehog, Virtua Tennis: World Tour (PSP portable gaming system), and Phantasy Star Universe (PlayStation 2, PC). And on the first day of E3, SEGA will announce two new additions to the Sonic The Hedgehog franchise.“
Shadow the Hedgehog has already been mentioned on the SEGA Press Release list, so this opens up some doors. We already know that the Nintendo DS Sonic the Hedgehog game is to be revealed in a near final form, so this will no doubt be one of the two ‘new’ games announced.

Phantasy Star Universe has been officially announced for both North American and Europe release by Sega. Though this was obviously going to happen sooner or later, new information has been revealed. The game is scheduled for a February of 2006 release on both the Sony Playstation 2 and Windows PC.
The game will feature both a story driven single player game and a PSO inspired online game seperate from that experience in one package. The game will feature 40 hours of single player exploration, with many characters and cutscenes involved. The storyline follows a 17 year old Ethan Waber as he searches for his kidnapped sister from a mysterious force known only as THE SEED.

Sega’s Official Phantasy Star Universe website has returned again, not featuring too much content yet. The website is in Japanese, but does feature 3 of the first in-game screenshots, as well as some character profiles of the two main characters.

Games Are Fun recently reported on Phantasy Star Universe, revealing more information and a Japanese scan. The report says that the game will be released in both US and Japan in November, and that PSU will appear in the next Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine as the cover story. The scan below has what appears to be the two main characters, as well as some cutscene screenshots from the actual game.

As you can see from the past report, Phantasy Star Universe will be released on the Playstation 2, PC, and Xbox. But that still is not known, as theres dozens of reports that say this game will be released only on the PS2 and PC. Also what has been said, is this game will be a follow up to the original Phantasy Star series, and not the PSO series.
So who do you believe? Right now, we just have to look at all of this as pure rumors. Right now a majority of rumors suggest that Phantasy Star Universe will be a regular RPG and not a MMORPG, giving storyline details on the characters and where the game takes place.
Phantasy Star Universe will take place throughout the Graal solar system, which consists of three planets and various races such as the Numans. After a century of peace following a lengthy period of war, civilization now faces an invasion from a new alien force named the SEED, which has begun attacking different colonies in space.

In news that is bound to amaze in some ways and bore in others… SEGA have announced what everyone’s already known since E3 2004: the ‘true’ sequel to the inspiring Dreamcast MMORPG Phantasy Star Online.
What fans were not clued up on until now however, is platform specifics. Regarding the last few Gamecube incarnations and Sonic Team head Yuji Naka publically stating that Sonic Team fans will need Nintendo’s purple box, many would have been dead set on Phantasy Star Universe appearing on Nintendo.
It appears Phantasy Star Universe will be heading to PC, PlayStation 2 and XBOX, with no Gamecube version currently in plans.

Sorry about the lack in updates guys, things are really hectic back here, and I just switched to Windows XP the other day – it’s good actually. Wow, who’d have thought Microsoft would make something that would work? Anyway, E3 has come and gone, but luckily The Sonic Stadium is here to let you know what Sonic Team had to offer – the link is up there in the Game Alert. You can also find it in the ‘Articles’ section underneath the ‘Features’ channel.
It’s been an interesting E3 if nothing else, with The Legend of Zelda revelations, Nintendo DS, and Sony and Microsoft frankly not being able to touch Nintendo this year. Sonic Team had a good showing, and I think I speak for all of us when I say that the biggest Sonic Team development in that event was Phantasy Star Universe: the true, proper, kosher sequel to Phantasy Star Online. We have info. We have screens. We have movies. We have it all. Only on TSS. Check it out. Then shout out your thoughts on the SSMB.
