Something Happening at “sonicthehedgehog4.com”…

If you go to the mysterious and recently uncovered “sonicthehedgehog4.com,” you’ll see that you have to log in to see its content.  You also have to be a part of “SEGA West Staging.”  Hmm… interesting… What could they be *ahem* “staging?”

UPDATE: All the other “sonicthehedgehog#” websites do the same thing.  Except “sonicthehedgehog2.com,” which doesn’t exist.

UPDATE #2: Go to “sonicthehedgehog1.com.”  You don’t have to log-in to see its contents, which is some text that says “IT WORKS!”

Sonic Goes Golfing Again, But This Time… it’s DX

Hey, westerners!  You probably will never be able to play this game, but at least you’ll know about it!  That’s good, right?

I digress.  Remember when I told you that the original Sonic Golf was hella cool?  Well, now there’s a sequel and it’s in 3D, but it’s currently only slated for a Japanese release at ¥315 through the Puyo! SEGA service.

Sonic Golf DX is a mobile golf game that features 9 holes of Green Hill action.  Aside from the obvious graphical upgrade, the game includes a challenge mode and extra events to keep you entertained.

Thanks to HunterTSF of SSMB for spotting this release.

Want the Real Needlemouse Info? RubyEclipse Says Thursday

Were you upset today at the incredibly lame Needlemouse reveal that featured drawings of stuff that we saw last decade and a song that was composed in FL Studio?  Well, get used to seeing more of that until Thursday.

The man responsible for posting all of these Needlemouse challenges and general nonsense, RubyEclipse, on the SEGA America blogs went over to NeoGAF today and made a comment about when actual information about Needlemouse would be coming out.

Nope, this Thursday all the big stuff is out of the bag. The second Needlemouse Challenge was also the last, as mentioned when the blog went up.

I know some people would have liked more than just a couple pieces of concept art – and I can understand that sentiment, knowing how excited and hopeful people are about the game. As huge as the hype may be, I personally think the wait to Thursday is well worth it – so, when that day comes, we’ll see if people agree.

So, there you have it.  Wait until Thursday.  Until then, enjoy the feeling and spirit of classic Sonic taking you over.

It is good to read some comments about you guys enjoying the music though – and that’s really just a small sample, as the best tracks are yet to come.

There better be better tracks.  Damn, that little ditty on the SEGA homepage was really bad.

Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games Now Available for iPod Touch/iPhone

Just like his mobile outing of the summer Olympiad, SEGA has released a mobile version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, sans Mario, to the iPhone and iPod Touch.  The game features 10 characters (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, Eggman, Vector, Blaze, Metal Sonic and Silver) and 4 events in the game  (snowboard cross, curling, skeleton and figure skating)

The game has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled multiplayer, but you can also hand your iPhone/iPod Touch off to your friends in “pass and play” mode.

The game is available at the iTunes store for $4.99.  A gameplay video is provided below:

The Escapist Riffs on Sonic Unleashed

The Escapist’s “Unskippable” series takes a look at game cutscenes and adds a Mystery Science Theater 3000-style commentary track.  Their latest in this series skewers the opening cutscene of Sonic Unleashed.  Is it funny?  Eh… it’s hit and miss.  I did think that the “super realism for a cartoon blue hedgehog” line was pretty funny.

SEGA Starts Needlemouse Community Challenge #2

Yes, this concept art above is official and will be a badnik in the final game.

Remember that concept art made by Trakker last week?  Well, it has caught SEGA’s attention.  If we want more information about Project Needlemouse, we have to follow his footsteps.  SEGA is asking for 100 pieces of concept art to unveil more concept art, a zone name, and a double-super-secret bonus surprise.

Here’s what SEGA says on their blog:

So, the folks here at SEGA have only one word to comment on the fake concept art above:

Awesome.

In fact, we’d like to see even more of it. So here’s the challenge: we want you guys to create your own concept art based on your favorite Badniks from the original Sonic games. It can be any Badnik from Sonic 1, 2, 3, Sonic & Knuckles, or any other Sonic games of that era. Pick your favorite(s), draw them up concept art style, and send it our way! (Japanese not required!)

The Challenge: Submit over 100 (total) pieces of Concept Art of your favorite oldschool Badniks to SEGA! Show us which enemies you want to see in Project Needlemouse!

The Reward: If the challenge is met, next week we’ll reveal:

  • Project Needlemouse’s Actual Name
  • Concept Art from the first Zone
  • A very cool extra bonus…

What to use: Alright! Now that we have your attention, on to the specifics. You can create the concept art in Photoshop, on paper, in Microsoft Paint, via crayon, or using pretty much any worthwhile medium that gets the point across. (Create it from something notably awesome – like, say, Oreos – and you will get a bonus spotlight!) The limit is one piece of concept art per person.

Submitting your concept art: Next, send it our way! You’ve got a few options here, so just pick the one that’s easiest for you.

1. Post it here in a comment! Host it on an external site like Photobucket.com, and then comment here on the Blog with a link to your art.

2. E-mail us! If you’re a little shy about showing off your work to the world, you can also send it to us via e-mail: communityteam@sega.com !

3. PM us! If you’ve got a Forum or SEGA Pass account, you can send a private message to RubyEclipse on the SEGA forums with your art. If you already have a forum account, you’re all set!

If you guys can send in a cumulative total of over 100 pieces of concept art by Monday morning at 10:00 AM, you’re in for a very special treat in the days following. This will be our final community challenge for Project Needlemouse – and it will also be one of the last times we refer to the game by its code name. If you thought the first concept art was cool, then trust us – things are about to get a whole lot more interesting. We will also be updating throughout the week and weekend to let you know how close you are!

Go go go go go go… draw and stuff, damnit.

Sunday Poll: “waits 4 needlemouse infos”

Nothing ever happens on Sundays.  You come here, usually shit ain’t goin’ on Sundays and you’re all like “pfffft, that sucks.”  Here’s a chance to do something about that, I guess.  I’m going to start doing this every Sunday.  The first Sunday poll question is:

With all the drama, leaks, and general bullshit around Project Needlemouse, how desperate are you to know anything about the game?

  1. Extremely Desperate.  I’ve ruined three pairs of pants.
  2. Desperate.  My pants are literally bulging.
  3. Moderate.  I feel a small sensation downstairs.
  4. Not Desperate.  I’d like more concrete information before getting tight.
  5. Don’t Give a Shit.  Self-explanatory.

RUMOR: Is Project Needlemouse “Sonic 4?”

So, I went on Sonic Retro a second ago and got a link to a 1UP article about the “games that they’re dying to see.” Project Needlemouse is on the list.  Here’s what they said:

Here’s what people already know about the game: it centers on only Sonic, it’s going to be 2D, it’s in HD, and it’ll be coming to Xbox Live and PSN. Here’s what they don’t know: it’s Sonic the Hedgehog 4. At least, that’s how it’s considered internally at Sega — whether it’ll have some other name when it ships, we’re not sure. But from its 2D gameplay to its focus on just the character we actually give a shit about, this is the Sonic game we’ve been waiting for since we moved on from the Sega Genesis. Let’s just hope this doesn’t all sound too good to be true — the second we see a Weresonic or Sonic’s fat purple friend we’re calling bullshit on the whole thing.

You call bullshit, 1UP?  Nah, I call bullshit on you.  Sonic 4?  You know just as much about Project Needlemouse as the rest of us: nothing.  We got crabs.

Each commenter gets a bonus point if they post a link to a “Sonic the Hedgehog 4” fangame.

SEGA & Playtech Partner Up for Online Poker

Cardplayer.com is reporting that gaming licensor and developer Playtech has reached a deal with SEGA to create SEGApoker.com and SEGAcasino.com, online suites of SEGA-themed card and casino games.

Obviously, SEGAcasino will feature casino games and classic and SEGApoker will have card games that support 35,000-person tournament play.

Mor Weizer, CEO of Playtech, said, “SEGA is one of the most highly respected brands in gaming today and the brands name speaks for itself. We’re ecstatic to have reached this agreement with SEGA Games Limited.”

“With our integrated platform and enhanced games suite, we feel that we’ve given them the tools to expand their product offering, provide a secure and safe gaming experience, and ultimately bring greater value to the SEGA community.”

Official SEGA Genesis Emulator Coming to iPhone

In a surprise turn of a events, SEGA is re-releasing the Genesis games on another platform.  The iPhone isn’t foreign to SEGA, but it’s a little bit different this time around.  In a stroke of genius (yes, I said “genius”), SEGA will be releasing an official emulator for the iPhone with its own store, allowing you to purchase ROMs.  With the iPhone App Store becoming obnoxiously bigger every day, SEGA’s plan to break free and sell their games within its own store is a smart idea.  The emulator will come packaged with Space Harrier II and with the ability to purchase four additional titles:

• Sonic the Hedgehog: $5.99
• Golden Axe: $4.99
• Ecco the Dolphin: $2.99
• Shining Force: $2.99

Will you pay $6 for the original Sonic (again)?  Will the emulator recognize the Sonic app that was released last year?  Will lag be present in these emulations?  All these questions and more should be answered when the app releases later this year.

Remember the Shellcracker concept art that SEGA revealed last week for Project Needlemouse?  Well, one fan has decided to draw up some more in that style.  This time, it’s one of Shellcracker’s running buddies, Slicer, the biggest dick in the entire game.  Looks pretty official to me, but I’ll let you be the judge:

Sonic Show: The Marcus Minute, Ep. 1

TSS’ vidcast, The Sonic Show, has a new face… and it’s the face of a generation.

If you were anywhere near SAGE 2009 this past July, you should know Marcus.  He had a few hours of air-time that everybody loved.  If you are unfamiliar with him, here’s his story of how he ended up on The Sonic Show:

Marcus was born in 1995.  Marcus’ first Sonic experience was Sonic Adventure 2 for the Dreamcast.  He didn’t know what a “Genesis” was until last year.  He decided to play the games that started it all.

One day, Marcus decided that he wanted to be like everybody else on YouTube and review classic games.  Nobody watched him and those that actually did hated his guts.  Marcus locked himself in a closet of Shadow plushies and cut his wrists with the instruction manual of Sonic ’06.

We saw him in action and, quite frankly, he’s the best at what he does.  Jay (DiscoPonies), head of the Sonic Show, decided to pick him up.  Marcus emerged from his closet a new man.  Today, we bring you his first review as he takes a retrospective look at the original Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic Spotted On WWE Monday Night Raw

First darts.  Now… wrestling?

If you like wrestling, you probably were smart like me and switched off the Slammy Awards 3-hour special immediately due to its lack of anything interesting (aka good wrestling).  One thing that I guess I missed out on is some dude in the crowd dressed as Sonic getting high fives from Maria.

In reality, did I really miss out?  I mean, I would have to sit through a Divas match to see the 3-seconds of a dude in a Sonic costume.  That’s rough, yo.  Here’s a video of Sonic in the crowd (he appears at the 0:23 mark; I made sure that you didn’t have to watch the awful match that preceded it):

Community Interview: Hazard the Porgoyle

Remember when Dreadknux said that you could “get in touch” with us here at TSS?  Well, a visitor of ours did.  He has been featured here before and wanted to showcase his improvement for all of you.  I said, “Well, hey, your improvement is so great and your art has always been awesome.  Why not do an interview?”  And here we are… about to sit down with “Hazard the Porgoyle,” a guy who “lives to recreate Sonic boss battles.”

Brad Flick: Welcome back to the front page, Haz.  It’s great to finally talk to you.  I’m a big fan of your boss battle art.

Hazard the Porgoyle: Thanks… and thanks for featuring me here at TSS again.

Brad Flick: No problem.  So, what inspired you to start recreating boss battles from Sonic?

Hazard the Porgoyle: When I joined deviantART in 2005, all I had to present were a couple of Sonic Adventure Egg Carrier clay figures and some fancharacter drawings. I did obtain a Sonic Adventure 2 Battle strategy guide prior to that, and in it was a render of the Biolizard. I figured, “Why not recreate that model on paper, then insert the background around it?” So, for a couple of years I carried around a (rather shoddy) hand drawing of just that.  When I drifted away from hand drawing and delved into Macromedia Flash 7, I thought, “While I’m trying to learn this program, I might as well see what that old picture looks like when redrawn in Flash.” I posted the result, and (even regarding its quality) it was a hit. (Nowadays, and after a load of edits, that picture looks a little something like this http://hazard-the-porgoyle.deviantart.com/art/The-Prototype-The-Biolizard-87732400 ) From there, I began to think, what other seldom drawn scenes from the Sonic series can I put a new perspective on?  Such is my motto today.

BF: Cool.  You were featured a year ago in the “Fanatics” series when we were in the blog format last January.  The series only ran for a few months, so not a whole lot of artists were highlighted here How did that make you feel to be featured?

HP: At the time, (and even today) it couldn’t have felt better. It was such a pleasant surprise, (surprise is an understatement – I nearly jumped out of my skin) and I will certainly cherish the memory of that January morning forever. It started so normally, except that I had 48 messages out of nowhere, and continuing my morning routine by visiting my favorite Sonic Fan Site I found, well, you know.  Alas, after a time I was troubled – I saw how my skills were growing, and how by comparison, quite a few of my pictures had an off model Sonic and completely unrealistic shading.

BF: You thought that you had unrealistic shading then?  You certainly look like you’ve gotten better at it.  Do you think that you’ve improved a lot in the last year?

HP: It would seem that risks make all the difference. As time has passed, I not only improved my shading (switching from slapping radial gradients on everything to Photoshop 7’s Burn and Dodge tools) and accuracy, but also started playing with even more dynamic perspectives. My accuracy standards have also driven me to never leave any stone unturned. (Action Replay float codes anyone?) Details I thought were “good enough” in the past… not so much nowadays. If I had to bullet point it all, it’d look something like:

– Started drawing Sonic correctly.

– Vastly improved efficiency.  Pictures that may take others a week to do can be completed in a day or two by me.

– Learned how lighting works in the real world, and have applied that to my shading techniques.

– Starting expanding the cast found in my pictures.

– Started to truly understand Geometry and Perspective, leading to more dynamic scenes.

BF: It shows.  Your DeviantArt profile is full of your boss images.  What have you accomplished since starting your DA profile?

HP: Now I’m starting to wish I left one badly drawn picture for comparison, but hey, that in itself is an accomplishment. As I have improved and expanded my skills, I’ve extensively overhauled my Sonic Boss gallery to make sure every moment of the Sonic Series has equal representation through my hands. Specifically, my greatest accomplishments have to be my large animation projects. “To End a King’s Reign” and “For the Fallen Land’s Fate…” both take all of the same elements found in any still picture, and sets them into motion. But no, this doesn’t mean they’re perfect, (they are quite repetitive) but what I have learned form those projects can and will lead to bigger and better things. Oh, and nearly quadrupling my Boss gallery in a single year ain’t too shabby, neither.

BF: It also is amazing that you’ve managed to touch base with almost every game, including Sonic Labyrinth! What do you hope to do with your boss battle art, if anything?

HP: I don’t plan on things changing too much – I draw solely for the people of the Sonic community, just to see their reactions to finding that “Hey, someone does remember that boss.”  I’m learning what I hope are skills that will better my chances of working in the field that I hope to enter, but other than that, these pictures are for the fans.

BF: What are your other works of art that you are proud of?

HP: Outside of Sonic bosses, I may not do much, but when I put my skills towards other projects, I make it count. Case in point, in Spring ’09, Chicago held its Farmers Markets Reusable Bag Design Contest. No prizes for guessing who won that and got their picture taken with the mayor.   Closing statements: People of the Sonic Community, it’s only because of you that I have improved at all. Without feedback, I’d still be stuck in yesteryear’s patterns. Comments are always valued, and I hope to build my knowledge for the production of even greater pictures and animations. Brad, I cannot express my gratitude for you taking time out of your schedule to create this article, and I hope it marks the beginning of a productive and fulfilling year.

BF: And just for fun… which Sonic games are your favorite?

HP: There can never be a clear cut winner (I seem to go through phases with this sort of thing), but it boils down to Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, and Sonic Rush Adventure. The rich level design of S3&K keeps it from getting stale, the replay value of the hunters’ stages and Chao in SA2B keeps it fresh, and Rush Adventure’s fast and frantic boss battles are always a joy to experience.

BF: Thanks for the interview, Haz.  It was great to hear about your improvement as an artist.

HP: No, thank you.  Being featured here is an honor.

BF: Before you go… tell me… what the hell is a “porgoyle?”

HP: I knew this wasn’t going to conclude without that loose end being tied up. Porcupine Gargoyle, my friend. I was only about 11 or 12 when I made that really awkward concept up.

BF: That’s… really ridiculous.  Oh, fancharacters…
