SAGE Begins Tomorrow!

Those of you that don’t know, SAGE is the Sonic Amateur Games Exposition.

It’s a show that has a bunch of Fan Game developers (who make Sonic the Hedgehog and other related fan games, from programs such as The Games Factory and MultiMedia Fusion) come together and show their works to the Online Sonic Community. It’s an ONLINE event, unlike professional Video Game expos like E3 that take place on Real Life locations.

SAGE 2003 begins tomorrow – September the 9th.
And best of all, The Sonic Stadium is once again covering the event!

TSS went on record as the first site to officially cover the original SAGE event back in 2000/2001, but stopped covering the last few because of the general audience that SAGE was now aiming for. TSS will be there covering the event so that you guys can become interested in it once more, and Shadow Team’s presence there will certainly add to that as well.

Make sure there’s only ONE place you go for SAGE coverage, and that’s The Sonic Stadium! The SAGE website is below, and will be found in related media. All SAGE reports from hereon in will be exclusive to TSS!

TSS LOVES SHAYNE THAMES :P

Sonic Books Section re-opened
Music Zone: Sonic Adventure OST & SA2 Multi-Dimensional added
Fleetway Comics Zone: Issue #3 & Issue #4 added

If you haven’t noticed, TSS had recently changed two of their linked Topsite lists, as the old ones are now redundant and are never updated. Within just a few days we are already climbing the lists like no other site, so to prove that support for your favourite Sonic site will get you everywhere, we’ve done a mondo update for you! ^_^ Click the links above. You’ll also be pleased to hear that Operation Grandslam is getting more exciting by the day, and an announcement about it will be made soon. FINALLY, let’s welcome new members to the TSS Staff – Fuzzbuzz and FZ Sambo. Fuzzbuzz will be helping to code Grandslam and Sambo is the new Sonic Cartoons maintainer. Enjoy the update, guys 😉

Fanart Submissions Temporarily Closed

I am currently renovating the current form mailer submission setup so the other staffers can use it as well… in addition to finishing up php-izing everyone else’s archives, getting my crap for college straightened out, and getting my site done…

Soooo…. I am officially closing fanart submission until further notice. However, everyone that has recently submitted WILL get their art up as soon as php-izing the other artist pages is done.

Thanks for your patience [and the Kevlar(TM) vests]

Music Zone Revamped

You are going to love us. 😛 People have been saying that our collection of Japanese/European Sonic CD MP3s are so good, that we had to follow it through. Therefore, the Music Zone is the next section to be given a facelift – along with a TON of downloadable CD Soundtracks and game music to boot! You’ll love it I’m sure ^_^ Have fun. Pre-SAGE: Shadow Team’s Showcase

SAGE is less than a month away, and we’re giving you the exclusive details on a new Fan Game developer who will be rearing it’s head among the entire Online Sonic Community. Labelled Shadow Team, regular visitors of TSS will know them as the home-grown antics of Roareye, Anarchy Rat and Dreadknux (Click HERE to visit the website), but this will be their first real appearance onto the public.

Their first game, Sonic Avalanche, met with a very good reception at Sonic Fan Games HQ, but with SAGE hopefully shedding of it’s niche audience, Shadow Team and other Fan Game teams will be able to get more recognition for their work. Continue reading Pre-SAGE: Shadow Team’s Showcase

SAGE 2003 Registration

Yes, SAGE (Sonic Amateur Games Expo) is coming up fast once again, and entries are being accepted by Perfect Chaos Zero until the 24th August!

For those that do not yet know what SAGE is, we can’t really blame you. SAGE is a showcase of everyone’s Fan Games, much like what E3 does for professional video games. It pops up twice a year, and the first opening in 2000/2001 caused a huge reaction within the Online Sonic Community. Thank Blaze Hedgehog for that.

But as time went on, interest for the event waned, as the event slowly became more and more the property of popular site Sonic Fan Games HQ. The last Sonic Amateur Game Expos have been alright, but didn’t really catch mainstream like it used to – only people who visited SFGHQ on a regular basis showed their items. Video Games – New Design

Right, here’s a treat for you – I finally managed how to do the layout for the Video Games pages, so now all Sonic Mega Drive/Mega CD/32X games and Nintendo GameCube games are available to view as normal. The other games will be added later – I’m tired, see, and about to participate in an archery contest in the middle of my mum’s birthday party – don’t ask 😛

A LEVEL RESULTS!

No update today guys, but very good news all the same!
I got my A Level results back yesterday – I got a B, two C’s and a D!
😀 That means I’ve fully earned my place at University. I’ll be moving over during the end of September/beginning of October, and I’ll be studying Computer Games and Internet Technology. ^_^ It should be really exciting learning how to program and design computer games for real! That’s all – Expect an update tomorrow, if the man upstairs be even more generous.

SSMB Fighting Game?

SSMB member, Mad Ad, talked exclusively to Dreadknux about the almost damn-near certainty of a Fighting Fan Game, including members of the SSMB. Dreadknux has given Mad Ad permission to use the SSMB and TSS name in this Fan Game, along with sprites of his character.

The plan for the fighting game is not one large game, it is lots of small instalment-like games, with each instalment being a match. Each game will be small, as it will be part of an ongoing fighting series. There is a league planned using this format style.

The way it is planned to play is very much like a basic form of Smash Bros. Characters will have a limited attack range, but scenery in stages will provide many inventive ideas for other methods of attack. Continue reading SSMB Fighting Game?

New Awards/TSS History section

TSS History updated

A site called TBBZ recently had a major awards ceremony. The Sonic Stadium cleaned up the event, winning 4 awards! Thanks guys! Speaking of which, it’s made me revamp the TSS History section, PHP-style. You’ll be able to see the awards we’ve won, the many different layouts we have had, and the TSS Timeline (written by myself) has been updated by a month. I’ll try and get it up to date soon.

Also, we have got buttons at the bottom of the navigation bar on each page. If you like what you see on the site, please click these buttons and vote for TSS. Clicking all four links doesn’t take 2 minutes, and they all open in new windows. This is so that we know the amount of support we got for future events and features we can add to the site. Thanks a lot for your vote! ^_^

Sonic News Reform

Yes, Sonic News is still here, but in a cleaner form! You’ll notice that most of Sonic News has changed. This is the new, improved version of Sonic News, for we have, like The Sonic Stadium, gone PHP stylee.

What does this mean to you? Well, for a start you’ll be able to get your news fix much quicker and faster than ever before (and considering how fast Sonic News is in the first place…), as well as cool extras such as being able to add your own comments and thoughts on the many Sonic and Sonic Team headlines passing through here.

You can also let a friend know about any of the articles we have, just by clicking on ‘Send to Friend’ and filling in the details. The news prior to this month (August) has been removed temporarily – now that archives will be added automatically, it seems fitting for us to archive the news headlines that we had to manually update.

Soon the ‘Articles’ section in the MEDIA Channel will be moved to Sonic News too, where it will belong most – for it’s great move, you can submit any editorial articles that you have written – be it your theories on the Sonic Universe, a thought about the Online Community, or just general Sonic theory-ness.

Buy Sonic Underground, eejits =P

This has been around a while, but this is to those that do not know. Fans United for SatAM (FUS) has information that a Sonic Underground DVD will be released.

BUY IT. Even if you hate the series, BUY IT.
Why?

Because if you buy the DVD, DiC will most likely be allowed the rights to release a planned SatAM BOX SET, and maybe even a movie, if the rumour mill is to be believed. The people stopping DiC from doing so is Disney and Buena Vista, so the only way to get to these corporate airheads is to buy, buy buy.

You know it makes sense. Click the banner at the bottom of the main page for more information.

And so it begins…

1/2 Site Map Added
SEGA SONIC RADIO RETURNS
New TSS Guestbook!

For those that do not know, Operation Grandslam is a term that was used by me to describe the changes going on at TSS and the Message Board. Believe me when I say that when we’re done in a few months time, you’ll love some of the new interactional features that will only be on TSS! You can keep check of Grandslam’s progress at the top of each page now…

Speaking of the header of each page, you’ll notice it be different. There has now been (well, half) a Site Map added, so none of you can complain that the place is a pigsty and you can’t find nowt – if you still can’t find what you want, get some glasses 😛

And, perhaps the announcement to ‘make you wanna sex in your pants’ (according to Avid Merrian anyways) is the fact that the world’s best loved Sonic Radio Station is back and online! Yes, that’s right… SEGA SONIC RADIO! The radio that became one of the most popular stations in 2001 has returned – we’re trying to get a standard feed ready, but for the time being the server has to be online in order to listen to the Station. But, it’s back and you’ll love it even more now ^^

Final thing (Cor, this has been a long update), the Sonic Site Awards is cutting short it’s Phase 1 deadline by a month. That means that Phase 1 will end on the 31st July instead of the end of August. That is all. Enjoy SSR!

Billy Hatcher’s Game page is up, and S_H has managed to interview Saxman of the Sonic Hacking Community for a second time. ^_^ Check them out – tell us what you think in the Comments section too.

Update Also, many Games pages are down. This is because we’re working on making the rest of them PHP-ised. From the top, games up until Sonic Spinball (MD) can be viewed, as can Sonic DX, Pinball Party, Sonic Heroes and Billy Hatcher. We will try to make this change as quick as possible. Thanks for your patience. 🙂

Sonic X, Cartoons Section and ‘Gift’

What, the addition of this funky feature wasn’t enough? Well, if you’re a member of the SSMB, head over for a gift given to all members for a limited time, along with some other gifts kindly handed out by Pachuka of Sonic CulT. Also got the Sonic Cartoons section PHP-ised, many of the pages will be remade to look snazzier, but for now they’ve just been converted. And, a minute Sonic X section has been made – find it at http://www.sonicstadium.org/cartoons/index.php?cid=sonicx. There’s a reason why it’s so small. Because it’s now 3am in good old Blighty, and I need my kip. More tomorrow, hopefully. Chao.

Testing New TSS Updates Board

Groovebeans – this is a little tester for our new Updates Board, using a cool thingy called FusionPHP’s Fusion News. Website updates will appear here, and so will website announcements. Soon, a Headline bar with the top 5 news stories will make it just above this bit, making the functionality of the main page complete. Tell us what you think of the system – you can make a comment to any of our future updates, or send this update to a friend using the two links below each update. Enjoy-eth. 😀

TSS REVIEW: Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut

The game that has been praised by many Sonic fans as the better of two Sonic Adventures has been re-released on Nintendo GameCube. After SA2 Battle and Mega Collection (the only other two Sonic games on the console), this comes as no real surprise – Sonic Team is milking its mascot as much as they can by enticing Nintendo fans into the world of the blue blur. Out of the Exams, into some gaming!

Sorry about the oddness of the main page for the last few hours – something must have happened to kerfuffle the page ^_^. OK, all my exams are over officially, so things are going to start gearing up again soon – once we get more space on our servers, that is. =D Next week expect a review and more of Sonic Pinball Party, a review of the European release of Sonic Adventure DX, and the opening of the Sonic Site Awards 2003 – the awards ceremony that started it all! To all those submitting hoaxes, fan art and comics, please be patient, as my ‘net access is very limited at this time. Oh, and HAPPY 12th BIRTHDAY to Sonic on the 23rd! Just to say two very important things – Sonic_Hedgehogs, owner of Sonic News, has officially returned to The Sonic Stadium to run his section again. Yum! And, even more exciting news… the best Sonic comic in existence has now officially returned – only this time, instead of Fleetway returning like we all hope, a bunch of great STC fans have taken the time to make their own ‘Sonic the Comic’, based on the Fleetway verse. Enjoy…

Sonic on other consoles: A good or bad thing?

It’s the bedtime story that you tell to your kids in bed, or the scary ghost story you tell your brother or sister in a tent. Yes, that fabled story of when SEGA was a

respectable console manufacturer, and the most interesting chapter – the Dreamcast Saga – being where the company bailed out from their fans and went third party. There was outrage. There was disappointment. There was even death threats to the arcade company being mumbled under most irrational people’s breaths.

But for SEGA to survive, they needed to make this move. Ultimately, the fans should understand that, otherwise how can they be fans of the company? The alternative was to bask in the epitaph of one of the greatest games developers in the industry.

Two or three years down the line, and we see that SEGA could well be double-backing on itself and what they said, although some well-built relationships have been formed within the company – we have Smilebit shaking hands with Mr. Bill Gatesâ„¢ of Windowslandâ„¢, with AM2 not far behind (despite the XBox’s constant failure to make a stand in Japan, which is most ironic), making games that are destined not to creep out of Microsoft’s big money box anytime soon. You can also see the majority of SEGA teaming up with the casual gamer’s no-brainer option: making exclusive games for the PlayStation 2.

Finally, we have the Nintendo GameCube’s support – plenty of games (although paltry compared to the exclusive luxuries that the other two consoles get pampered with – Beach Spikers anyone? *Yak*), but at least Nintendo have made good exclusive pals with Amusement Vision and Soni-

… Erm… was I going to say Sonic Team?
Backtrack to this very morning I write this – hanging at my reliable GameCube source revealed the latest screenshots of Sonic Adventure DX. Tasty, I thought, although it was really nothing I hadn’t seen or completed before. I would most probably get SA:DX just for the sake of me being one of the most avid collectors of the blue blur out there – exactly the same reason I bought Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, another port from an old Dreamcast title.

Then something caught my eye. SEGA’s E3 list for May 2003. Perfect, I thought, as I read with glee, the latest Sonic game information caught my eye. Heart thumping with immense excitement for the official word on “Sonic Heroes” (that’s what it’s gonna be called, natch), I read something that might shake up the fury meters of some Nintendo/Sonic fanboys:

“SEGA’s legendary mascot Sonic The Hedgehog makes his historic PlayStation2 and Xbox debut!”

    Port-o-bingo?

Taking a short history lesson, when SEGA split from the console market and onto third party production, it was spelled quite clearly that Nintendo would be Sonic Team’s mainstay. Because of that, Sonic fans have been happy that they can get all their Sonic games on one console, and Nintendo fans both have a chance to see what Mario’s former arch rival is capable of, while having a real stance to say that their console is worth getting, in the rather over-exaggerated and over-publicised console war. Apart from Nintendo, there’s not a lot of exclusives for casual gamers to stand by. Sonic was seen as one reason to get a GameCube over a PS2 or XBox.

And Sonic Team, quite frankly, have been doing somewhat of a porting job. The first GameCube “exclusive” was in the form of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle – which was nowhere near as exciting to play as the original Dreamcast counterpart, and it actually is a worse version than the Dreamcast one. But, an enjoyable game nontheless, we (and especially I) didn’t mind Sonic Team doing a port to make themselves known. I was certain that the big Sonic gaming guns would come after SA2B. What came next?

Sonic Mega Collection. Good value for those never experienced Sonic before, but I could have played any of those games without shelling out £40 – and could have been better off without the cack Archie scans and boring-as-hell movies, cheers Japan VRI.

Then we had Phantasy Star Online. Ah yes, Sonic Team’s chief cash cow. A very very good game in it’s right, but why does it have to be ported to every single console in existence, rather than just making a proper sequel that was not repetitive to play on your own? A few months ago I was beginning to worry about the state of Sonic Team – never before had they been so dependent on bringing out rehashes of old Dreamcast games.

After PSO, in comes the inevitable – what everyone had been predicting since day one – Sonic Adventure ported and tweaked in some obscure way to make Directors Cut. Although in my opinion, SA1 was better than SA2, was there ever any need to bring this one out on GameCube? Why, when they could have been concentrating on original games?

    Not to worry…

My point thus far, being that most people (including Sonic fans that have ‘evolved’ into Nintendo fans) would initially feel like they, as fans, have been mistreated by Sonic Team. Who can blame them really – the team could have made one or two exclusive _new_ Sonic games on GameCube before dipping their toe in the water for other consoles. It wouldn’t have been at a loss either – seeings as pretty much every Sonic fan had taken heed of Naka-san’s apparaisal of Nintendo’s machine and bought a GameCube.

In this respect, their main question would be “Are Sonic Team just going to leave GameCube now they’re looking at Xbox and PS2, leaving all of the real Sonic fans eating their dust while the development team try to appeal to non-fans of Sonic?”

And my answer would be: Not a chance.

Yes, it does seem, as Sonic fans, we have been given a bit of a raw deal when it comes to the Sonic games front – Sonic Team has only up to this point [in this generation of consoles] provided ports of games we should pretty much already own. I am slightly dubious about Sonic Team’s outreach to non-Sonic fans, as that would mean more ports and perhaps, worst comes to worst, a complete departure of “true Sonic gameplay” in later games.

Looking at E3’s list, it seems that only Sonic Heroes is destined for a multi-platform release. The other games are sticking with GameCube and Game Boy Advance, which is an echo of what Naka-san was talking about a few years back when he said “If you’re a fan of Sonic Team, it’s best to get a GameCube”. Which is a huge relief.

And to be honest, Sonic is the mascot of SEGA, and perhaps a better way of getting the entire company known is to let the hedgehog stretch his feet across more than one platform. As said many times before, Sonic Team has some kind of crush on GameCube, so if there’s any Sonic games being released soon, you can bet your life that they will at least head to Nintendo’s console first – the console you bought because you were led to believe that the newest Sonic games would spawn from there.

You see? He weren’t lying, was our Yuji. Most probably why Sonic is heading to different platforms was either because, as above, it was a SEGA-controlled decision to gain a bit more respect from their name; or it was Naka-san’s idea of previously-mentioned ‘dipping his toe in the water’ in order to spread the name and popularity of the blue blur.

And take a look at what’s to come to reward loyal Sonic Team fans, exclusive to GameCube. Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg looks set to form a comeback from the innovative Sonic Team that we knew back in the NiGHTS Into Dreams… days. Phantasy Star Online Episode 3, being a possible Ninty exclusive, leaves loads of room for Game Boy Advance and e-Reader connectivity (what with the game being based on cards and all), and let’s not forget what’s a given anyway – Sonic Heroes.

The only fear anyone should have with this multi-platform Sonic business is the fact that Sonic Team may not be used to making multiple versions of the same game: their only experience being Phantasy Star Online Episodes 1 & 2 – but we sense, like PSO, Sonic Heroes will be made for each console with a specific time gap – which should mean that the GameCube and Xbox versions shouldn’t have gaffy PS2 graphics etc.

So no, Sonic Team are not turning their backs on us loyal fans, but outreaching to potential fans. This is the ‘Year of Sonic’ in full swing. Funnily enough, all this fuss about GC ports, and Naka-san hasn’t even made a remake of NiGHTS. =P

    Dreadknux’s Diaries: ‘Awww… But I Can Rebuild!’

It’s come to this. HostOnce, the wretches that hosted us (paid for by Zifei… the poor sod, that’s his money down the pan), decided that TSS was using too much of their “unlimited bandwidth and webspace”. So they shut down the site. Without notifying one of us. At all. Gaffy gits.
