Sonic 4: Episode 2 Confirmed, In Early Stages of Development

Here’s something that seems to have escaped many people’s notice. Over at the SEGA Forums SEGA’s Sonic 4 Brand Manager Ken Balough has confirmed work is officially underway on Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2. That may be a given, since the game is episodic, but this is the first we’ve heard from anyone at SEGA. Looking through a Sonic 4: Episode 2 topic at SEGA’s forum shows Balough has been doing some Q&A for over 2 weeks there, and we’ve picked some choice posts out below. Sonic Colors and Sonic 4 Win Nintendo Power Awards

It’s been a slow news week, so I thought I’d post this little tidbit.

The March 2011 issue of Nintendo Power has just been released and they have their 2010 awards in. Most of the article covers the editorial awards while one page is dedicated to the readers choice. Sonic Colors (Wii) won for best graphics by the editors, while Sonic 4 won for best WiiWare game by reader’s choice. (The editors awarded it to Cave Story.)

Check out the March issue of Nintendo Power for more awards and an extensive preview of the Nintendo 3DS.

SEGA Genesis Collection Coming Exclusively to PlayStation Plus Subscribers for FREE!

Gaming has come a long way since it became popular with the release of the Atari 2600. As the industry continued to build steam over the years that followed, we saw some iconic classics emerge. One publisher, SEGA, has definitely had its fair share of games that brought mass appeal in the early stages of gaming.

Whether it was our favorite blue hedgehog or playing couch co-op as two centurions tried to free Zeus’ daughter, SEGA created some of the most defining titles in video game history. Now, the SEGA Genesis Collection is coming to PlayStation Store. Starting March 29, SEGA will be rolling out the SEGA Genesis Collection, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Altered Beast, and more. Sonic #225 Variant “Death” Cover

IGN has once again gotten an exclusive as they now show the variant cover. With it, Sonic’s sad shock as a still, dead hand lays on the floor. It doesn’t look like Rotors. It doesn’t have a collar like Antione’s. No robotics like Bunnie’s (albeit, that’s only one arm). No gloves like Amy or Tails. Could it be Sally? You’ll have to wait until March to find out.

Smithsonian Art Museum to Feature Sonic in Games Exhibition?

The Smithsonian American Art Museum is setting up an exhibition focusing on video game artwork – and Sonic the Hedgehog could feature prominently in the upcoming showcase.

Called The Art of Video Games, the event takes a look at iconic games throughout the last 40 years and explores the industry “as an artistic medium, with a focus on striking visual effects, the creative use of new technologies, and the most influential artists and designers.” Better yet, there are 80 slots for games to be featured – and visitors to the museum’s website can vote for the games that they feel best represent ‘video games as art.’

Representing the Sonic the Hedgehog (and related) series in this voting stage are the following:

  • Sonic CD (Action Game – Sega Genesis)
  • Sonic Adventure (Action Game – Sega Dreamcast)
  • NiGHTS into Dreams… (Action Game – Sega Saturn)

Click here to visit the voting page – you’ll need to register an account with the website – and take your time in voting for the games you feel deserve the cut. Certainly, don’t vote for Sonic just because it’s Sonic, but… well, it’s Sonic isn’t it?

More Details of Jazwares 20th Anniversary Toy Range

[UPDATE: Check out friends in Germany @ Spindash.de and their photos – credit goes to those guys for these photos and many more!]

Earlier this week we saw footage and images taken from the Nuremburg Toy Fair of the new Jazwares line available later on this year. Well, our friends over at SEGA Memories have managed to obtain snaps of many of the figures and toys to be released to coincide with the 20th anniversary. Some of these have been seen before, but some photos include some others that haven’t been seen before such as the Classic Tails with Badnik figure (see picture – it’s that annoying thing that grabs you in the Chemcial Plant!).

The images also include some “Battle Game” figurines, as well as images for the cover of Archie comics Issue 226, within the classic Sonic & Amy Rose figure set.

Tony Harnell Recording “New Version” of Escape From The City

In amongst the influx of 20th Anniversary news, particularly surrounding music, it appears that we most certainly have not seen the last of reworkings of classic soundtracks, even after the announcement of a special edition of the Sonic Adventure Soundtrack! Tony Harnell, ex-TNT frontman and of course the legendary vocalist from “We Can” and “It Doesn’t Matter”, has confirmed via his facebook page that he will be shortly be visiting the studio to record a new version of the Sonic Adventure 2 track “Escape From The City”. Fans will no doubt be pleased by the prospect of hearing a reworked version of their favourite track, along with the prospect of what might further be in store!

Sonic Adventure Original Soundtrack 20th Anniversary Edition To Be Released

Quick on the heels of news that SEGA and Wavemaster Entertainment have things in the pipeline for Sonic’s 20th Birthday celebrations, a number of websites across the internet have already begun advertising a Sonic Adventure Original Soundtrack 20th Anniversary Edition album.

Those who have been despirate to own  a copy of this seminal soundtrack will be pleased, as the original Sonic Adventure “Digi-LOG Conversation” CD double album has been out of print for many years, and now fetches in excess of $150 on ebay auctions.

The album is tipped for a April 20th release this year in Japan, at the rather modest price of ¥2,400 ($30/£20). Those with keen eyes may have noticed this is currently tipped as a single CD release, and as no track list is available at present it is unknown what portion of the entire soundtrack will be included, along with any possibilities of remixed or reworked material.

Relieved you can now get an official copy of the soundtrack? Let us known in the comments section!

Happy Groundhog / Hedgehog Day (And A Possible Announcement On The Way?)

It’s 3am on Thursday, the 3rd of February, and fortunately for me Groundhog day won’t be repeating itself for me (although today seems to have gone on forever!) However for many of our American fans, their local groundhog will have predicted whether or not they will be having 6 more weeks of winter, of if early spring is on it’s way.

However the tradition of calling the 2nd of February “Hedgehog Day” was a tradition continued by SEGA since the announcement of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 a year ago. The SEGA America Blog is celebrating Hedgehog day in a very mysterious way…and no, I don’t mean the hedgehog weather-sensing facts either!

Keen-eyed fans will notice that certain letters are highlighted throughout the blog, and in order, spell “Berlin”.

Is SEGA giving us a hint as to a possible announcement that could take place soon in Berlin? Are the SoA employees enslaved to write the blog trying to tell us the city in which they have been locked in a dungeon and chained to a laptop? Is Sonic changing his name to Hans and moving to Germany? No doubt many fans will find this too much of a coincidence, and with two or three Sonic titles in the works this year, this is bound to get the fans talking.

So what’s going on? Answers on a back of a postcard…or let’s hear your conspiracy theories or know-how in the comments!

UPDATE: LordSpeed has a pretty convincing theory:

“Isaiah Berlin with his essay called “The Hedgehog and the Fox” takes the hedgehog as the type of the person who knows “one big thing”, as opposed to the fox, who knows many things. This was taken from a poem by Archilochus -> (image of Sega Blog) (Wikipedia).”

Make-A-Wish & SEGA Make A Young Ill Sonic Fan’s Dreams Come True

Well, here’s a story that will warm your heart up and maybe even bring a tear to your eye. ArchangelUK over at the Sonic City Blognik has posted up a touching story about a young boy with a life threatening illness who recently turned 4 called J-Jay. J-Jay is a huge Sonic fan and his biggest wish was to have his hero Sonic share his Birthday with him. Thanks to the combined efforts of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and SEGA Benelux the lad’s wish came true. A special Sonic themed Birthday party with Sonic himself in attendance was thrown to celebrate brave little J-Jay’s big day.

Check out the full story with loads more photos over at the Sonic City Blognik.

Jazwares Reveal Sonic 20th Anniversary Figures & Plushes At London Toy Fair

Jazwares has revealed their plans to launch a series of special Sonic 20th Anniversary figures and plushes at a recent London Toy Fair. A range of prototypes and concepts were on show at Jazwares’ booth, including a figures series called “Sonic Through Time”, which as the name suggests are figures based on Sonic’s design at a various year in his life. Also on show was a Shadow figure & comic pack, classic Dr.Eggman with Egg Robo’s figure pack, modern Dr.Eggman with Egg Pawns figure pack and modern Tails with a modern sandworm Badnik figure pack. New plushes shown were a large Shadow and a large classic Sonic, both 20th Anniversary labelled.

Since this line up was shown at a London toy fair, there’s hope that Tomy (distributor of Jazwares figures in the UK) will release these in the UK. No other information is available at present, but we’ll keep an eye out and report back. For now, check the two photos out and share your opinion of these new figures in the comments.

Thanks to SonikkuForever at the SSMB for the heads up and to Barry the Nomad at the SSMB for finding the last three pics.
