Sonic Adventure DX To Be Ported/Remade?

Sonic Adventure DX PAL GC

According to a recent ratings entry at the Australian classifications board the OFLC it looks like we could be getting a new port/remake of the Sonic Adventure Gamecube/PC port Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut. All we know right now is this new entry was rated on the 18th August 2009 as ‘G General’ and will be multi-platform.

The original port basically added some glossy changes to character models, a mission mode and all 12 Sonic Game Gear games. There’s no limit to what a new version on current consoles could add to the game if Sonic Team really worked at it.

We’ll be keeping an eye out for any future info/media on this, so stay tuned.

SoS 09 Live Streaming

Broadcasting will be live between 11am and 6pm GMT. These times may vary on the day.

The Summer of Sonic 2009 is set to be even bigger than the first in 2008, with many special guests, a load of events taking place on stage and around the venue, and the return of areas and features that you guys loved – only ten times bigger! We’re going with the tried-and-tested uStream – we have an easy job putting it on, you have an easy job viewing it. We’ll have a camera perched in Dread’s Crow’s Nest™ with a good view of the crowd and the stage all through the day, and Jay up in the place will keep you up to date on developments with a live video ticker, so if you miss Lee’s presumedly excellent show or something similarly freaky – that’s freaky in a good way – you’ve only got yourself to blame. Or your computer. Or your annoying sibling cruely stealing the computer.

Unquestionable taste in suits

The host for your video pleasure is the one and only Roareye Black. He’ll be guiding you throughout the days events as well as asking Sonic fans what they think of the day so far (and hopefully all in a snazzy suit).

Watch or Listen to Summer of Sonic 2009 Live

Can’t make it to the biggest Sonic event of the year? Fret not, for The Sonic Show, SEGASonic Radio, TSS and the SoS website have you covered! There are two ways to enjoy the event, depending on whether you like multitasking or your Internet connection.

Thanks to The Sonic Show, there will be a special live video feed that will overlook the day’s events and focus on various things on the show floor during the day! Roareye Black will be your presenter for the day, and DiscoPonies your producer/cameramans. Say hello to them if you’re at the Summer of Sonic tomorrow and you’ll be shown online! A video feed is below via uStream, but you can also watch on The Sonic Show’s website, Summer of Sonic’s website or on the special uStream page.

The other method you can tune into the day’s activities is by listening to SEGASonic Radio – thanks to our radio station, we’re able to broadcast the DJ’s tunes and the crowd live to your eardrums. The two feeds will provide different services – the radio feed will work right off of the live source, meaning if you’re into learning more about the Q&A and the power of sight isn’t a big deal, you may get a better result from the SSR feed. Listen in either using the panel below, or by going on the SoS website (link above).

EDIT: As embedding the SSR player isn’t working on TSS, you can head to SoS’ Live page and listen to the proceedings from the player on that page instead if you wish. SSR 24/7 will continue to play until the day kicks off.

See you guys tomorrow!

The Road to Summer of Sonic – Only Two Days to Go!

SOS09-LOGO-WITH-DATEMy bags are packed, I’m checked in online for my flight, and I tell you what – SoS fever is just about to kick in!

Everything is finally beginning to come together – Dreadknux, AAUK, Urtheart and many other staffers have been working tirelessly to bring everything together for the big day on Saturday; it is definitely shaping up to be a very busy day indeed! The stage schedule is packed – there’s just enough time to move things around in between the events going on there, and that is the tip of the iceberg; there will be a whole host of activities and contests going on throughout the day – some of which you know about, and some of which will be surprises!

For those of you turning up ultra-early in the morning due to whatever means of transport you are taking to the event, serial deviantartist Elson “Darkspeeds” Wong will be hanging around nearby – check out his plans on his deviant art account.

If you’re wondering what the special gift is – check out the Summer of Sonic website – yes, it’s a rather nifty artbook full of artwork old and new, of high quality, and surely something very special! There are a very limited number of them, so ticket holders, be sure to get there early to nab yourself one!

If you really can’t wait for SoS, and you want to tell everyone about how excited you are, what you’re going to be wearing (maybe you’re competiting in the cosplay contest?), or just generally want to gab about the event, head on over to the SSMB and join the chat there! Can’t be there in person? Then watch the live feed over at the Sonic Show site thanks to the amazing powers of Discoponies!

Right, I’m off to get my beauty sleep before my long day of travel down to London tomorrow – See you all on Saturday!

SoS 09 Countdown Day 5: The DK Rap

At the end of Summer of Sonic everyone paid tribute to Sonic with a massive cake – except it wasn’t for him but for someone else! Then ArchangelUK has to ruin it all naturally by reminding everyone that Rory and Svend still owe him the Wrecks Factor forfeit and that they would be singing the DK Rap.

Sonic Watch At Weston Super Mare

So I’ve just returned from my 5 day holiday with my wife at Weston Super Mare which was awesome by the way but before returning to the news hunting I thought you guys our devoted readers might be interested in a few Sonic findings we came across.

Dales mobile pics 063

First we have your bog standard game shop use of him in their banner together with Mario on the other side which I kinda cut out of the pic(no offence Mario fans). The store was pretty cool, plenty of DVD’s, games and music. Like an indepent HMV except these guys are cool enough to sell cool stuff in their cabinets and even loose Game Boy, DS and PSP games.

Dales mobile pics 050
Dales mobile pics 067

Second we have a ride I have dubbed ‘Sonic Chaos 2: The Revenge’ since the ride is called ‘Chaos’, Sonic is pictured on it and the ride looks like something Eggman could come up with to terrorise all those screaming people I often heard riding it.

Dales mobile pics 068

Last we have an awesome Sonic spray paint job me, the wife and the always awesome Flyboy Fox who we met up with there there on Thursday found while trekking through the town. I almost didn’t see it as it’s been painted on the bottom corner of one of those big green/black electricity boxes. The artist ‘enza’ must be an hardcore fan to use Sonic’s movie artwork all but having him hold a spray paint can instead of the normal peace symbol.

Weston Super Mare, we salute your Sonic love.

Happy 20th, SEGA Genesis!

Twenty years ago, on August 14th, 1989, SEGA’s most successful console debuted in North America to challenge Nintendo for dominance in the fourth-generation of console gaming.  Without the console’s success, we wouldn’t be here right now talking about motherfuckin’ blue hedgehogs.

While the SEGA Master System was superior to the Nintendo Entertainment System with better graphics and sound, the console failed to establish a library of games to rival the NES’ stellar collection in anywhere but Europe.  So, in 1989, two years before the launch of the Super Nintendo, SEGA debuted the Genesis with mild success.  Shipping only 400,000 units in its first year, SoA CEO Michael Katz introduced his two part solution to boost sales.  The famous “Genesis Does What Nintendon’t” slogan and, my personal favorite, the use of celebrities in games, like Arnold Palmer Golf and Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker.

It wasn’t until 1991 when Sonic the Hedgehog changed the gaming landscape forever.  Originally, the awful Altered Beast was the pack-in game with the console, but a bold move by SEGA CEO Hayao Nakayama put Sonic the Hedgehog in the box instead.  With critics claiming that the ‘hog was starring in the best game made thus far, people waiting for the Super Nintendo were convinced and bought a Genesis.  Genesis took a 55% market share over Nintendo soon after.

However, the success was short lived as SEGA drove their biggest success into the ground with the SEGA CD and 32X add-ons.  These disasters failed to establish a solid library of games and were too expensive.  With five consoles actively on the market with the Saturn’s launch (Game Gear, Genesis, Saturn, Pico, and the Master System in South America), SEGA discontinued the production of the Genesis.  With the Genesis outselling the Saturn in North America, the results were disastrous as Nintendo took total control of the 16-bit generation.  The rest is history and now we have Mario and Sonic running triatholons together.

My older brother got the Genesis with Sonic the Hedgehog for his birthday.  I was only three years old when this happened, so my first Genesis memory that I can recall is playing Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and getting trapped in Casino Night Zone.  Those were some fun times.

If you have any Genesis/16-bit Sonic memories of your own, please share them with us in the comment box below to celebrate the Genesis’ 20th birthday.

The Road To The Summer of Sonic – 17 Days To Go

SOS09 LOGO-WITH DATE
It’s almost time for the return of the world’s first Sonic the Hedgehog convention. And I am positively excited about the whole affair. Excited and nervous, actually. Who would have thought that an idea formed in my little head several years ago would actually become one of the most talked about events on the Sonic fan calendar? Not me for starters.

Thanks to the growing relationship I have with Sega Europe, which first began in 2005 when we ran Shadow Week, myself and a group of TSS staff and SSMB community members worked together with Sega to make the first true, real-life Sonic gathering. And it was really awesome. SoS 2008 couldn’t have gone better for a bunch of first-timers who never had any prior experience to hosting such an event.

Fast forward to 2009 and already SoS has grown exponentially. Sega are more heavily involved in the process; we have a budget rather than paying for a tiny hall out of a pool of community money; the success of last year’s event gives us some clout in inviting more special guests over… I haven’t had a second to really stop and think about it all this year, but given a chance this morning it’s really hit me how big and successful this thing is.

Of course, the additional luxuries mean additional pressures – we have a 500-strong space in the form of the Truman Brewery this time around, with a nice outdoor area, public parking, easy access and even a balcony (which I’m so using as a Command Deck! Watch me act like a pirate overseeing the sea of Sonic fans on the day!). But, seemingly endless amount of red tape are associated with actually hiring the space, because of the fact that it’s a proper professional venue rather than Dragon Hall’s cool and cosy community hall.

M&S Winter, All-Stars Racing At Summer of Sonic

Those going to this year’s Summer of Sonic convention (a joint venture between The Sonic Stadium, Sonic Wrecks and Sega Europe) will have yet another few reasons to get excited, as Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games and Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing make their first ever playable debuts in the UK.

Both the Wii and Nintendo DS versions of Mario and Sonic’s new athletic adventure will be playable in the Games Zone, alongside a bunch of Xbox 360 demo pods that will feature classic games from Sonic’s gaming past. Sega reps will be on hand to help fans trial the game, and there may even be a contest or two for those who take to the games very well indeed.

A PlayStation 3 pod will also house a playable copy of Sumo Digital’s upcoming multiplayer, Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing – this will be the first time outside of E3 that a copy of the game has even seen daylight, let alone the first time anyone from the gaming public will get to try it. Sumo Digital’s Executive Producer, Steve Lycett and Lead Designer, Travis Ryan, will also be present to demonstrate the game.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is set for an October 16th release in the UK, with Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing due for release TBA 2010.

New M&S at the Olympic Winter Games screenshots

MASATOWG_Wii_05-08-09

SEGA have released some new screenshots for both Wii and DS versions of upcoming title Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. In the screenshots we can see new HUD bits in both versions and some on-screen Wii Remote instructions displaying how the motion controls will work in the Wii version. Graphics are looking to be some of the best we’ve seen on the Wii.

In other sightings, Nintendo fans will be happy to learn that the course seen in the above screenshot is revealed in one screenshot to be none other than Mario Circuit from the famous Mario Kart series as has been speculated since the course was first revealed.

MASATOWG_DS_05-08-09

The new images of the DS version showcases more of its events too like the bobsleigh, skiing and snowboarding. It looks like the bobsleigh will control with the D-pad and buttons if the on screen controls in a screenshot of Metal Sonic and DK getting their bobsleigh started is anything to go by. New HUD displays reveal a gauge will play a part in the bobsleigh event too.

Snowboarding has also gained a gauge and items to attack your opponents with much like in the Dream Race event in the first DS game. Also like the first DS game SEGA aren’t holding back in the graphics department as they again look to be pushing the DS to its limits to make another beautiful looking game.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games will be released for Wii & DS October 16th in the UK and October 13th in the U.S. Check out more info and media at the Official Site.

Thank You, SAGE 09 Visitors!

Another SAGE has come and gone.  We thank all of those who took the time and visited the one and only online Sonic expo, celebrating the works of some of the most dedicated Sonic fans out there.  InstantSonic and KTZ, the show’s directors, would like to extend a big thank you to everybody involved in making this show a big success.  From the fangamers, to the SAGEcasters, to the special guests, and the visitors, this SAGE wouldn’t have gone off so well without you.  It was a great time to be in the community and a whole lot of fun.

BlueTube: The Hog With The Death Ray Eyes

An old Italian Sonic advert from 1992 has been dug up, offering European hedgehog fans the chance to grab a “Sonic Baydge” whose eyes light up when you press a button on the back. Unfortunately, this is coupled with an animation that would surely give children of the 1990s nightmares.

SAGE Spotlight: Sonic Robo Blast 2

Review by Kain of SFGHQ, Submitted to TSS

As a preface to this review, I will say that I am being particularly harsh in my criticisms of this game, because I feel no need to patronize this team or treat the game as “just a fangame,” mostly because of its enormous size, publicity, and history.  I’m also sore because I get motion sickness from playing jerky 3D games and am being doing it for spite from all the physical pain it put me through.  On to the review…Sonic Robo Blast 2 is a project that has been in development for over a decade and it shows.  In the eyes of many fangamers, including this one, it’s in a class of its own.  The volume of content and detail in this game is incredible.  It is and it feels like a full game.  However, it’s far from feeling like a complete game, as there are a large number of truly unfortunate glaring flaws with this game which keep me from really enjoying it. SAGE Spotlight: Time Twisted

tttitle

Last year, I reviewed a game that I’ve been following for quite some time, Sonic: Time Twisted.  While I was happy with prior versions, the 2008 demo was surprisingly mediocre and annoying.  Overbound (Bryce Stock), the game’s creator surely took notice at the comments and reviews left by the community and gave Time Twisted a much needed, and appreciated, make-over.  With one full zone of this new hotness available to play, there are many improvements to see.

dispotdriveGone is the game’s original first zone, City Edge.  In its place, we get “Dispot Drive.”  At first glace, I was somewhat shaky about the quality of this demo solely based on the use of the non-existant word “dispot” in the zone’s name.  Within the first thirty seconds of playing, however, my doubts were cast aside and the game looked, felt, and sounded like a drastic improvement over previous builds.

Time Twisted is designed to be a spiritual successor to Sonic CD, so with that connection comes the “bulgy-polygonal-pattern” foreground.  The yellow diamond foreground is much better than the strange pattern that City Edge, but shades on the side of “too bulgy.”  The foreground can sometimes be a bother on the eyes for always bulging out and providing few opportunities for flat or caved-in tiling.  Otherwise, the graphics are consistent, clean, and one of the best out there in Sonic fangaming.

ddzpastThe slippery controls of previous builds have been left in the past, as the game feels tighter and a bit more like Sonic CD.  While not perfect Sonic physics, they are not game-breaking in the slightest and are tight enough to get you through the experience.  I just wish that jump was mapped to a different key, because the space bar is slightly uncomfortable to me.

One thing that hasn’t improved is time travel.  The means of how you leap through time is now different than Sonic CD‘s, but there’s still no point to it.  I will pose the same question as I did last year: What purpose is there to go back in time?  I need a reason to travel, like destroying a roboticizer or something, or else the mechanic is just a gimmick that would eventually wear on me if the demo was longer.  Everything needs a purpose and time travel still does not have one.

metalsonicTime Travel also becomes aggravating due to the aforementioned new method of activating it.  Rather than hitting a post and hitting high speeds for a set amount of time, Time Twisted throws you into the past/future once you hit a timepost.  There’s no option, like Sonic CD, to time travel.  As a result, the game stops to send you back in time with each time-post that you pass and all you will hear is the first ten to twenty seconds of each time period’s music.

Speaking of the music, it’s still great.  LarkSS, the game’s composer, has created past/present tunes that complement each other nicely, like the Sonic CD soundtracks.  Sound effects wise, the game did away with the “click” sound for when Sonic lands on his feet and that makes the experience leagues better.

Everybody can learn a lesson from Overbound.  He is a guy who had his project assailed with harsh criticism, got upset, but still managed to get up and come back stronger the following year.  It can only get better from here, so keep up the good work, Overbound.

SAGE Spotlight: Project Mettrix

Perhaps a beacon of hope, glory and good times for many, Sonic the Hedgehog: Project Mettrix has been in the fangaming headlines for quite some time, and with good reason. While many fangames before it have tried to recreate the classic 2D Sonic experience and provide a brand new adventure out of it, Mettrix is the first from-scratch build that, even in its early state, is truly succeeding.

In the new tech demo, codenamed E02, we’re given a tour of four different stages in the updated code. The first is a test level purely for demonstration purposes, but it was real fun bouncing around in this dummy stage using all the contours and springs to our advantage. It seems that Stealth and co are onto a good thing here – focusing on physics-based speed is just what the doctor ordered.

mettrix-siz

Although introduced in an earlier version – E01 – first stage Shining Island Zone seems to pale in comparison to the Test stage in terms of level design. Granted, the former is practically a playground to trial moves and gimmicks, but you can’t hep but feel that not enough of those curves and loops have been used in the tropical paradise level. The graphics are also showing their age, with block browns and somewhat jarring chequered scenery contrasting the blue skies badly. Luckily, this zone is due for a refit anyway according to Stealth, so we should see it in a much more contemporary state later.

As well as a Special Stage (that works exactly like those from the original Sonic the Hedgehog) and a recreation of Green Hill Zone to demonstrate the E02 engine’s capability to reproduce the Sonic experience to the letter, we were treated to a new stage called Bronze Lake Zone. Created for Knuckles, but as with any stage in this demo you can play as Sonic or Tails too, all to exact Sonic 3 & Knuckles specifications with no odd side effects.

blz-example

Bronze Lake itself is very nicely designed, and is actually quite a sizeable Zone. Taking cues from past water levels such as Aquatic Ruins, it consists of two huge, differing paths – one leading you underwater and through the depths of the Lake; the other going high into the skies, complete with dinosaur-esque Badniks to boot. Some great attention to detail is used in the scenery and gimmicks as well, such as the leaves on the trees.

Perhaps the greatest asset to Mettrix however, is its Source engine itself. For a player, it’s the perfect recreation for some classic 2D platforming action. The physics and object collisions are all present and correct, just as if you really were playing a sequel to Sonic’s finest outing. For a developer and fan modder however, this engine is a wet dream, for you can don your coding hat and start creating your own Sonic levels using Mettrix as a base! There’s a list of fan-created addons for the game already available on Mettrix’s website and as the engine gets further in development there’s no question that more complex things can be achieved on it.

Overall, Mettrix provides a very enticing prospect for the fangaming community – on the surface, an enjoyable replication of a 2D classic. Under the skin, a complex yet accessible coding base that can be used to create your very own levels in the same vein. Check out Mettrix’s tech demo E02 at their SAGE booth.
