The final day of the Sonic Site Awards Phase 1 – where fans submit their own sites (democratically) for nomination into award categories. Now that this stage is over, I deliberately closed the awards page so that no more cheating and submitting could be done. Still, some people managed to take advantage of the Universal Form to get their point across… The Stadium’s bagged well over 2,500 at this time, a truly great achievement.

SEGA has redesigned its official website with a whole host of things to drool over. There’s a swish new design featuring Sonic’s head in the background, new sections for each gaming platform and pages for the latest and upcoming games. This month, I spent the time promoting the new release of my Radio Station, with the new name I made up in June – Sega Sonic Radio. I am in the process of making a separate website for it, and I uploaded a lot more MP3s. One step at a time eh? Also, I managed to grab about 300 new midis to slap into the Music Zone. The site is getting more popular by the minute! In this month, the Hit Counter has surpassed 2,000! Again, thanks to everyone for visiting, I will treat you – honest.

First footage of Sonic Adventure 2 on the Gamecube has been released by SEGA from the Space World show. Check it out after the jump; it seems to be pretty similar to the Dreamcast original, so any changes that Sonic Team may have added aren’t very apparent. At Space World, Sonic Team head Yuji Naka spoke about the state of the games industry today, and how Nintendo’s strategy with the Gamecube fits in with the current landscape. We saw it coming, but SEGA has reportedly made the news official about Sonic Adventure 2 being released on Nintendo’s Gamecube console. A report from Nintendo’s Space World show indicates that the game will hit the system, but Sonic Team will formally announce any new changes to the game since its Dreamcast release later this week.

Wave Master has launched a special website dedicated to the music of Sonic Adventure 2, most likely timed to promote the upcoming Japanese release of the Vocal Soundtrack. RyanDrummond.com has stated that Steve Sheppard-Broadie, the voice of E-102 Gamma in Sonic Adventure 1 and the President in Sonic Adventure 2, has passed away on Friday of August 10th, we’ll miss you. Here’s what Ryan Drummond (SA/SA2’s Sonic voice) had to say:
“Before I go for this month, I have to pay respects to a fallen talent here in San Diego. Steve Broadie was a very talented Voice-Over actor here and I always enjoyed seeing him at auditions and working with him on projects. He passed away at 2pm on Friday the 10th. He will be missed. Hope he’s doing V.O.s in heaven! :)”

Sega today announced the release of the 100th issue of the Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series, making the speedy hedgehog the first videogame character to reach the milestone.
First published back in 1993, the strip has traced the adventures of Sonic and the Knothole Village heroes as they take on the evil of Dr. Robotnik and the Robotropolis villains for the past eight years. The 100th issue, which coincides with the 10th Anniversary of Sonic The Hedgehog, will mark the return of the Freedom Fighters, a band of Sonic allies that help him battle Robotnik on his home turf. Nintendo has revealed that it will be releasing modem adaptors and launching its online network for Gamecube early 2002 – and Phantasy Star Online will release on the purple box at the same time (March 2002) to take full advantage of it. No pricing plans have been revealed yet, but we’re bound to know more soon as Space World is just around the corner.

Seems like Sonic Team has a little surprise up its sleeve for the upcoming Nintendo show, Space World, in Japan. The developer will be showing off four games, three of which we know about (Phantasy Star Online for Gamecube and Sonic Advance and Puyo Puyo for Game Boy Advance). Which leaves one more unannounced title to speculate about. Interesting. Could the Gamecube be getting a Sonic game, perhaps?

Sonic Adventure 2’s Chao raising features are pretty cool and all, but there are some of us who don’t want to endure the pain of slowly breeding the right kind of creature to win races with (and thus get Emblems). Sonic Team will now attempt to press criminal charges against individuals hacking into Phantasy Star Online servers. Hacking into a server is illegal under the Japanese penal code. The ‘Team is working with the police to track hackers inside Japan and out, and in some cases, the International Interpol has been notified.

Archie writer Ken Penders has formally announced one of two new artists for the official Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series, after solicitations for Issue #104 were released earlier than expected. It looks like Dawn Best, aka Chordsy in the fan community, has won the Archie team over as her art features in upcoming story ‘Freedom Fighters of the Galaxy’. More details have surfaced on the VHS and DVD home re-releases of Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM) episodes. A pack containing four episodes will go on sale on February 26, 2002, according to Team Artail. The VHS will retail for $9.99 and the DVD for $14.99.

According to Dengeki Online, Yuji Naka’s wonderful multiplayer RPG Phantasy Star Online has won yet another award. At the Sixth Annual Animation Kobe, Phantasy Star Online received the Best Network Media award, adding to it several awards received from various conventions including Tokyo Game Show and Game Developers Conference.
