HoL’s Musings: Sonic needs another shot at an RPG

You all remember Sonic Chronicles right? No? Too bad, because it happened!

I was thinking about it just now and I’ve thought about this topic before about what Sega could’ve done differently for Sonic’s grand debut in the RPG genre, so now I think it’s a good time to talk about it and brainstorm some ideas!

New Sonic Chronicles trailer reeks of awesome

Sega of America and Sega of Europe have released a new trailer for upcoming DS RPG game Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. The trailer contains gameplay as well as showing more comic-book esque cutscenes. The trailer also says you can play as over 10 characters, so current reports of 11 characters from various sources may be right.

When watching the end of the U.S. version of the trailer it’s still looking like you poor guy’s and gal’s are still far from getting a release date as it ends with ‘Fall 2008’ compared to the European trailer ending ‘September 2008’ which falls in line with Sega Europe’s recent unveiling of a September 26th date for the game.

In other news, the new issue of UK gaming magazine Games Master was released Wednesday the 30th July and they have a 2 page preview on the game with gorgeous new artwork spread across a 2 page poster too. UK fans can pick the magazine up for £3.99 now. Games Master also revealed they will have their review of the game in their next issue August 27th. Expect our full un-biased (despite being life-long Sonic fans) review closer to release.

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood revealed

Several images hit the Internet yesterday taking the Sonic community by storm. The first screenshots of Biowares upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog RPG for DS had been included in the latest issue of Americans popular ‘Nintendo Power’ magazine.

Boasting beautiful hand-drawn backgrounds, Sonic-looking environments and all our favourite characters, the screenshots are a perfect example of how a classic RPG should look. But this time involving Sonic. Continue reading Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood revealed

Bioware confirm Sonic RPG still in development

Bioware recently asked their forum community to provide them with some questions regarding their future and sure enough they got some questions back. Two of their guy’s Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk have now answered the community’s questions in a video you can watch/download at their site.

Sonic RPG was mentioned, most importantly with this question –
“Are you guys still doing that Sonic RPG now that you have been acquired by EA?”

Answer?

“So, our commitment to Sonic RPG on the DS hasn’t changed a bit – We have a great partner with SEGA and we’re looking forward to being able to show some…some sneak peaks on that game real soon.”

Thanks to spunodi at SSMB for the update.

SEGA: Sonic RPG Still In Production? [UPDATE]

Short news piece today: SEGA have responded to The Sonic Stadium explaining that the Sonic RPG won’t be affected by the acquisition of BioWare by publishing giant Electronic Arts.

There was some concern over the title, as EA and SEGA are effectively bitter rivals in the publishing industry. This confirmation from SEGA is a good sign that Sonic RPG is still in the works.

[UPDATE] It appears SEGA are once again confused on its own information, as the Online Services sector tell us (via Sonic Wrecks) that the future of Sonic RPG isn’t as concrete as the PR department apparently made out recently. When one department says the game isn’t affected and yet another says otherwise, where does that leave the Sonic fan? A bit confused, we say.

Stay tuned to TSS for more details as we get it.

BioWare Acquired by Electronic Arts

In the last few days, third party behemoth Electronic Arts successfully acquired development studios Pandemic and BioWare. EA stated the reasons for the acquisition concerned the company’s attempts at creating more successful RPG and adventure titles.

News concerning most of the Sonic the Hedgehog fanbase is the involvement of BioWare – as many are aware, the developers of Mass Effect were reported to be creating a Sonic RPG exclusively for the Nintendo DS, in co-operation with SEGA. Continue reading BioWare Acquired by Electronic Arts

Sonic RPG announced!

Sega has been a rather unpredictable company as of late. A new NiGHTS game, a Sonic & Mario Sports game, various company acquisitions, and now this: a Sonic RPG from the makers of the critically acclaimed games Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire.

Sega has already teamed up with BioWare for an RPG based on the Alien movie franchise, so their choice of developer comes as no surprise.

The title is coming to Nintendo’s DS handheld, and is expected to arrive sometime in 2008. Continue reading Sonic RPG announced!
