Archie’s fastest selling Sonic the Hedgehog comic is due to make its way to trade paperback format in the Summer following the release of the third and final installment in the arc, Mega Drive: Overdrive. Many fans who have had difficulty in obtaining the sold-out first issue will be pleased, and probably not surprised these comics will be making their way to this format. Welcome to the TSS premiere of Sonic Talk! We’ve moved our show from Segabits to here at the Sonic Stadium. Sadly this episode is very late but great and worth the wait! In this comic book heavy episode, we get a nice, long interview with Sonic comic book scribe Ian Flynn! We talk about the Sonic/Mega Man crossover,”World’s Unite”, the recent Sonic story arcs, writing comedy for Sonic Boom and a little behind the scenes on the reboot. Meanwhile, Alex gives his final two cents on a previous Sonic writer who shall remain nameless, but you can probably guess who. All this and more in the first Sonic Talk on Sonic Stadium!

With the recent crossover of Sonic the Hedgehog and Megman from thier respective Archie comics over with, what’s next for the our blue hero? (Sonic not Megaman).
Writer of the Archie Sonic the Hedgehog comics Ian Flynn recently took some time to talk to Comic Vine to about the next saga, ‘Countdown to Chaos.‘
The interview goes into detail about the repercussions from the crossover with Megaman and what to expect in the next few issues.
CV: Where did the decision come to have actual repercussions after the crossover instead of just starting a new adventure?
IF: In our last major event, Sonic: Genesis, we did a temporary rewrite of the world. When we returned to the status quo, the main complaint from fans was a lack of repercussions. After the major shake-up that was the Worlds Collide crossover, we knew we couldn’t play it safe this second time around.
Something that will please long time Freedom fighter fans is the return of Bunnie Rabbot and who knows we may finally get some answers as to where she disappeared to.
CV: We’ll be seeing the debut of Bunnie Rabbot as well. How much of a role will these characters play in future issues?
IF: Bunnie’s a mainstay, but you could also argue this entire story arc is about “debuting” the Freedom Fighters all over again. When last we left her, she was stripped of her robotic powers and went missing – So when we see her again in Countdown to Chaos there will be changes!
Oh and of course the return of someone else who has been missing from the Freedom Fighters for sometime now, but I would think everyone would know who that is by now.

Along with the successful funding for effective livestream equipment, David Oxford of Nintendo Force is pleased to announced that the Sonic Lost World First Play Charity Marathon will forge ahead this Saturday, October 26th!
Oxford will be joined by Ian Flynn, who many will recognize as the writer for Archie Comics’ Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Universe, and Mega Man series, as they tackle Sonic’s latest gaming venture over the course of 24 hours in hopes to raise money for the Sick Kids Foundation.
With the hosts themselves bearing little to no experience of the game itself, Flynn having played no more than the San Diego Comic-Con demo and Oxford going in blind, they will also be holding an open chat where viewers are given the green light to ask questions as the playthrough goes on, and with the recent universal reboot of the Archie Sonic comics following the mega Worlds Collide crossover, there is possibly no better chance to get some answers regarding Sonic’s brave new world than this!
In an email Oxford sent our way, he has stated that, thanks to their generous sponsors, numerous prizes will be raffled off to those who donate over the course of the Marathon, which include but are not limited to:
Four green Sonic Lost World lanyards from the Sonic Boom 2013 convention, featuring images of the Deadly Six and Sonic on one side, and the game’s logo on the other;
Four digital one-year subscriptions to Nintendo Force magazine;
12 different Archie Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Universe comic collections and magazines, and;
Four hardcover first editions of UDON Entertainment’s The History of Sonic the Hedgehog book!
And the two grand prizes?

While concerns were initially raised over the date of the event due to the delay of the North American release, it appears that the kind folks at SEGA have given a helping hand to Oxford and Flynn by granting them an early copy of the game, thus allowing the charity event to proceed as planned.
Oxford and Flynn are hoping to raise a total of $1000-1500 through the Charity Marathon, and if those numbers can be broken, then all the better for Sick Kids! Help kick off the holiday season right by donating to this wonderful cause!

David Oxford, writer for Nintendo Force magazine, and Ian Flynn, writer for Archie Comics’ Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Universe, and Mega Man series, are teaming up for a start-to-finish blind playthrough of SEGA’s upcoming Sonic Lost Worldto raise some money for charity!
Hosted by Nyteworks, the pair seek to raise $1000-1500 (but you know what they say: the more, the merrier!) over the course of 24 hours for the Sick Kids Foundation, the fundraising branch of the Toronto-based The Hospital for Sick Children. You can pester Flynn with various questions concerning the comics, participate in raffles to win prizes via known sponsors Nintendo Force and UDON Entertainment (publisher of The History of Sonic the Hedgehog), and even request games to be played should they finish their Lost Hex romp early!
HOWEVER! While the mission in itself is noble, they won’t be able to accomplish their goal without the proper equipment.
The Sonic Lost World First Play Charity Marathon needs a bit of a boost of up to $750 for quality tools, so Oxford and Flynn are turning to crowdfunding via Indiegogo in order to make the charity event a reality. Perks of contributing include shout-outs and promotions of almost anything (so long as it is within reason), so for the charity and the equipment fundraiser of the charity…

Last Sunday, I managed to catch popular Sonic the Hedgehog comic book writer Ian Flynn during the final hour of the Sand Diego Comic Con. Despite being dead tired from 4 days of signings, he generously shared his time with me and Nuckles87 on all things Sonic. From the redesigns to the future of the book and even his thoughts on Sonic Lost World. Sadly, during the interview we were attacked with a grenade! AAHH! “The best” That’s the two words Paul Kaminski used to describe issue 230 and onward when I interviewed him back at the San Diego comic Con in July and I’ll be damned if he wasn’t right. After the mediocrity that was “Sonic: Genesis” and the bland story of Naugus trying to take the throne in the background of Sonic and Sally’s romance (which had way too much focus placed on it), I was worried that the quality of the book was starting to take a nose dive. But when tragedy hits and Eggman gets a huge victory, the story starts to get epic. This is Ian Flynn at his absolute best.

Wow! Summer of Sonic sure is shaping up to have a huge Archie comics presence this year! Quick in the wake of the announcement of Archie Sonic Comic artist Tracy Yardley on Monday, Summer of Sonic is extremely proud to announce our second Archie comics guest this year, Ian Flynn!
Flynn has been head writer for the American based comic since way back in 2005 (issue 160 to be precise!) and has rapidly gained fan popularity with his finger firmly on the pulse of the Sonic the Hedgehog community.
We look forward to seeing both Ian and Tracy at this year’s convention – in fact we can hardly maintain our excitement!

Well, it’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here: Archie’s Creator Tell All Panel. Truth be told, I haven’t watched it myself, but it’s got Ian and Spaz so it’s gotta be good, right?
Aside from maybe a Sonic Colors video, this concludes are NYCC coverage. I hope you enjoyed are in-depth, fun, info filled interviews, exclusive pics, and videos of the event. Don’t think this is our last event though. We’ve taken you to E3, Comic Con, PAX, and NYCC, and we’ll be taking you to those places and more next year. This year was a test run in a lot of ways, as we found our footing, learned how to cover such events, and how to improve on what we’ve done to bring you even better stuff.
This also isn’t the end of our Archie coverage. Over the course of the summer we’ve gotten into contact with people within the company, and we intend to use these contacts for your benefit. Stay tuned.

This interview is a dream come true, in all honesty. Patrick Spaziente is a very difficult man to get a hold of. He has absolutely no online presence, and hasn’t done an interview of any kind since 2005, at least from what I’ve been able to find. Spaz is famously reclusive, and until now I didn’t even really know what he looked like. The fact that he was actually at the con is remarkable in and of itself, since Spaz rarely ever even goes to conventions. The fact that he was even there is the whole reason I even asked Selinka to cover the con for us. Even more remarkable is the fact that he let us conduct a video interview, since Mr. Selinka was originally told by Spaz that he wanted to remain “an enigma”. This interview is a huge score for us all, and I hope you will all enjoy it.
We also have another man in this interview, of course. He is bearded. He is mighty. He is the enemy to all Drago fan everywhere. He is also an awesomely friendly dude. He is Ian “Potto” Flynn, writer extraordinaire. He got the Sonic comics out of teen drama, endless love triangles, convoluted solutions to simple problems, and Tommy the Turtle, and into high flying action, adventure, humor, and Bean the Dynamite Duck. We got an interview with him too. Not as awesome as Spaz, I agree, but he just kinda wondered onto camera, so Selinka thought “why the heck not?”

Our man from Emerald Coast Comics, TJ Selinka, also got us some sweet pics of Megaman concept art that Archie showed off. Unlike the concept art in the last post, this stuff was drawn by Spaz himself! It has also been confirmed that Spaz is drawing at least the first issue.

We don’t often report on non-Sonic news, but when it’s related in some cool way to the blue blur it’s always good to let you guys know! As we just reported in our NYCC Live Blog, Sonic scribe Ian Flynn will be working with Sonic cover artist Patrick Spaziente and short term Sabrina penciler Chad Thomas on an all new comic based around Capcom’s blue bomber, Megaman!
As of yet, not much else is known, aside from the fact that the comic is launching next year. We took a video of the entire panel, and we’ll be getting media and interviews from the Archie booth over the next few days, so stay tuned! Yes, we do intend to ask about the possibility of a crossover!’
Ian Flynn is also working on an Archie character called “Cosmo The Merry Martian”, a character that had a brief publication stint in the 1950s.

The New York Comic Con starts today, and you guys know what that means: interviews, news, and media galore! This is all being brought to you by TJ Selinka, who’s first stop at the con will be today’s Archie panel “Archie Comics Means Business!”, which will be followed by a visit to the Archie booth to talk with Ian Flynn and a few other members of the Archie Comics staff.
This news post will provide live coverage for the “Archie Comics Means Business!” panel, which will run from 3:15-4:15 EST. Expected at the panel are some exclusive Sonic the Hedgehog comic related announcements, as well as details on Sonic scribe Ian Flynn’s upcoming secret project. Selinka will be updating this news post with all announcements relevant to either of those subjects. SEGA loved the Sonic Encylopedia, and are trying to figure out what to do with the marketing. Encyclopedia is over an inch and a half thick. Has been put on hiatus because SoA has gotten more invovled.

Ken Penders, as most die-hard Archie readers will know, is one of the more prolific writer/artists to have contributed to the Sonic the Hedgehog Archie comic universe over the years. However it has come to light today that Penders, in a statement on his website, will be pursuing copyright claims to the stories and characters he has been responsible for creating in the past. For those who don’t follow Archie comics – this is a substantial amount of material, not only including popular characters such as Julie-Su and Geoffrey St. John, but a large amount of the Sonic & Knuckles story arcs. Penders also claims that plotlines used in the Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood title were adapted from his works.
To quote the statement on Penders’ Web page:
As for how it affects the SONIC THE HEDGEHOG titles published by Archie Comics, while it does not prevent them from publishing the SONIC series, they are not allowed to use any of my characters, concepts or stories without further discussion with my representatives. For now, they cannot reprint any of my stories in any media whatsoever, nor can they use any of my characters. Julie-Su, Geoffrey St. John, Hershey, Rob O’ the Hedge, Lien-Da, the Dark Legion along with the rest of the characters and concepts I created – including the alternative universes and future timeline – cannot appear in the series.
This could potentially affect a large number of factors in the future of the comic’s publishing, as many editions of the Archie Archives books as well as current and future story arcs, currently being written by Ian Flynn include works Penders claims property of. Penders also states he is seeking intellectual property advice from an LA-based attorney, and also warns of cease and desist letters being issued to anyone using these characters and concepts without permission.
Again, I would like to request that comments keep in mind that both Ken, Ian and other writers and artists actively use and read the internet; out-an-out flaming and insults will be removed. Cheers! -T

Since 2007, Sonic the Hedgehog has become a regular participant in the annual “Free Comic Book Day” event. Once every year, comic book publishers across America send special free issues to participating comic book stores, to be given away for free to anyone who wants them. This year, FCBD will be on May 2nd, so be sure to mark your calenders. This Sonic FCBD issue is meant to recap the entire series as a whole, in “Sonic: Evolution of a Hero”. Like past FCBD Sonic issues, this year’s Sonic comic is a silver level sponsor, meaning not all participating comic book stores will have it, so you may want to call your comic book store before hand. According to Sonic the Hedgehog’s headwriter, Ian Flynn, this issue is meant to introduce the book to newcomers and to clarify plot points to veterans. The comic book itself has no storyline, but is instead more akin to Archie’s data files, a biography of the characters and a description of the world’s backstory. The book will also be offering some insight and spoilers for what happens in and after issue #200. Those of you wondering what this Sonic comic is all about might want to consider going to a comic book store to pick it up.
