Dreadknux’s Diaries: The Un-De-Fragging Thing

This is a series of personal blogs written by Dreadknux during the formative years of The Sonic Stadium. It chronicles significant events in the website’s early life.

I had to defrag my computer, it was annoying, I tell you, so I couldn’t not only use the PC, but defrag was not even working properly! Three days and it hadn’t even reached 2%! Just kept going back and forward from 0% to 1% then 0% again >_<. I managed to give it a break and check my e-mails. Jesus! The amount of emails I had, I had never gotten anything like this amount before. Dead chuffed I was, as I counted all the submissions. Continue reading Dreadknux’s Diaries: The Un-De-Fragging Thing

Dreadknux’s Diaries: The Birth of the Awards to Change a Universe…

This is a series of personal blogs written by Dreadknux during the formative years of The Sonic Stadium. It chronicles significant events in the website’s early life.

With the new look Sonic Stadium now open for some time, I thought it was time for a killer app. I wanted to make something else that involved the whole Sonic online community. Most of my other projects have not been so popular, so I decided to go for something that everyone will be interested in. Then it hit me. An awards ceremony. That’ll be great, I thought. This is a series of personal blogs written by Dreadknux during the formative years of The Sonic Stadium. It chronicles significant events in the website’s early life.

YEEEEEEEEHAH! Someone’s become visitor 1000! Unfortunately, no-one owned up to it for some time though, so I’m setting the record to 1,100 hits. Hey, it’s just as memorable! Just wanted to savour this tasty feeling, even though no-one sent me anything about it. Maybe they couldn’t see the hit counter…

TSS Review: Sonic Adventure 2

In SA2 you can choose to play as either the Dark Side to take over the world, or the Heroes trying to save it, in different perspectives of the same story. You can play as Eggman (YES!) to help the fat one and newcomers Rouge the Bat and Shadow the Hedgehog (who you can also play as) to destroy the world (yet again, Eggman never gives up). Dreadknux’s Diaries: The Kick-Ass Relaunch

This is a series of personal blogs written by Dreadknux during the formative years of The Sonic Stadium. It chronicles significant events in the website’s early life.

Here I am, uploading all the files through CuteFTP into Angelfire, taking bloody ages because there’s so much new stuff to upload. Then I realise that I have no more room. ARGH! I was in panic, I had one night to upload all my things. Then I noticed Topcities that did 150MB of space. Crikey! I signed up, uploaded, and the day was saved! Sonic’s 10th Anniversary: What Will be the Future for Sonic the Hedgehog?

At the rate Sega is going, Sonic looks set to win back some old fans of yesteryear. And with Sega going multi-platform, Sonic is going to be able to spin dash his way onto all the upcoming next-gen consoles. Although hardcore Sonic fans won’t like the sound of that, Sonic will win back everyone and gain trust in Sega. To that end, it’s fun to think about what will be coming next: here are the current rumours surrounding future Sonic titles. Sonic’s 10th Anniversary: The Ten Year History!

This article is to celebrate the special occasion that is Sonic’s Birthday – Today, on June 23rd, 1991, the first Sonic game was released upon a crowd of unsuspecting video gamers. It was due to Sonic’s coolness and the way that the Sonic games instantly made platform games fashionable, plus with the backing of the greatest games developer in the world, that Sonic the Hedgehog became more popularly known in the video game household. Fan Game Review: Sonic Wars

Sonic Wars, released by Diablo on Sonic’s Birthday (that explains the familiar icons appearing at the title screen), is your average Sonic platforming adventure. But, although this seems good for a game that’s rushed (hey, it wasn’t me that said it, Diablo admitted it ^_^), there are a few flaws that stop this game from getting as good as it should have been. Sonic’s 10th Anniversary: Sega’s Rivals

In the past, Sega has had tough competition from an old respected rival called Nintendo. Consequently, Sonic and Mario were constantly fighting for the Number One spot in people’s lives (of course, the hedgehog won). But aside from Ninty, who have been Sega and Sonic’s rivals, past and new? Well, here’s the lowdown on the bad boys. Continue reading Sonic’s 10th Anniversary: Sega’s Rivals

Sonic’s 10th Anniversary: Unforgettable Moments

Ah, the joys of playing Sonic the Hedgehog. Doesn’t matter if it was on Master System, Mega Drive, NGPC, Dreamcast or any other Sega console in the past, it’s always been a wonderful time. The marvellous adventures that loyal Sonic fans have had playing through the Sonic Adventure 2 Demo; finally getting to the climax of Sonic 3 & Knuckles… Playing Sonic has brought nothing but fond memories for the casual, or even Sonic-fanatic, gamer. Bootleg Zone: Somari (NES)

Some ROM Hacks try to be serious. You know, like the game was supposed to be the way it was hacked. But what people trying to achieve this fail to realise is, that it never ever works out like that, and just turns out to be a pile of cack. The whole point of ROM Hacking, I think, is to have a bit of fun and to experiment. It’s interesting. So it’s refreshing to see Somari pop it’s ugly, but oh so entertaining head from the pile of ROM Hacks we have today. Despite it being old, it is in fact one of the best Hacks, and here’s why… Continue reading Bootleg Zone: Somari (NES)

It’s odd. You’d think that people who want to make Sonic games would just either make it on Click and Create, or Multimedia Fusion. You know, make a game of their own. But no. Pulling ‘Sonic Crackers’

Sonic Crackers was announced for the Sega 32X soon after Sonic 1 and 2 was released on the Mega Drive. It’s initial WIP title was actually ‘Sonic Stadium’, believe it or not! Crackers featured much of the same action that you can now find in Knuckles Chaotix, which was released in 1995. It was assumed that Sonic Crackers was lost to the world, but a ROM of the prototype has surfaced and we can now tell you the odds and ends of this curious little game. First Details on Sonic X-Treme, the Saturn Game That Never Was

This game, if released, would have done for the Sega Saturn what Sonic Adventure did for the Dreamcast. Considering a lot more people bought the Saturn, of course. This was a totally 3D game for Sonic, most of the details are below, but after development problems hit at Sega HQ the company decided to can it and let Sonic 3D Blast take its place. Fan Game Preview: Sonic S-V2

The demo for Diablo’s upcoming fan game is now out in the wild, and I must say, it plays very well. Only Sonic is playable right now, but in the finished game you’ll be able to play as one of three other heroes too – Diablo, Blaze and Hez Hedgehog (with a secret fifth character hinted at by Diablo). All four characters have different jump and speed attributes, meaning that completing some levels may prove more difficult for some characters. Continue reading Fan Game Preview: Sonic S-V2

Dreadknux’s Diaries: Soon to Relaunch With Sonic Fan Club

This is a series of personal blogs written by Dreadknux during the formative years of The Sonic Stadium. It chronicles significant events in the website’s early life.

I figured I should make up a new project that should involve the whole of the Sonic community. After all, that is what I’m here for. I looked at all the Fan submission sites – SFGHQ, SSRG, etc, and I thought why not have a fan submission section where ALL the aspects of Sonic fandom are included? It does make sense right? And thus, the Sonic Fan Club was born, and the first of its kind. 😀 Continue reading Dreadknux’s Diaries: Soon to Relaunch With Sonic Fan Club

TSS REVIEW: Sonic Pocket Adventure

This is one of the first Sonic titles officially developed for a non-Sega platform – namely the Neo Geo Pocket Color. This release was to accompany Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast, but sadly the NGPC could never compare to the likes of Nintendo’s Game Boy Color no matter how much it tried, and therefore SPA didn’t get nearly enough attention. Shame that, because it is quite a good game to play. Continue reading TSS REVIEW: Sonic Pocket Adventure

Sonic Robo Blast 2 is by far the most ambitious, graphically impressive Sonic the Hedgehog fan game to date, and shows a massive step up from Sonic Team Junior’s last title, Sonic Robo Blast. TSS REVIEW: Sonic Shuffle

Sonic Shuffle, originally titled Sonic Square, was created by members of the same team that helped Nintendo develop Mario Party (hence the similarity in the two games). The good kind of ‘fate’, of course. I decided to take a break from updating TSS, and leave the site alone for the next couple of months. SAGE 2: Complete Coverage

It’s time for the opening of the second ever Sonic Amateur Games Expo. I felt a bit silly for missing the show six months ago, so I thought I’d give you full coverage this time around. And, to tell the truth, I’m glad. SAGE 2 was a lot more successful than its predecessor – although a technical hitch did occur during this year’s show, by and large it was a barnstorming success.

So, what can we expect from all the budding Sonic Fan Game developers then? It’s a good job we’re here – take a look after the jump. Continue reading SAGE 2: Complete Coverage

Feedback Forum: Give SEGA a Break!

Sega has had its ups and downs – more downs than ups, but that was due to its consoles, not the games created for them. Sega tried to make the most out of every console they made (including the Sega Saturn, which was a mongoose to program for). So I believe that Sega is pretty good when it comes to making games. Just look in your local arcade for Christ’s sake! How many Sega cabinets do you see? Most of the games are made by them! Continue reading Feedback Forum: Give SEGA a Break!

Dreadknux’s Diaries: The False Move

This is a series of personal blogs written by Dreadknux during the formative years of The Sonic Stadium. It chronicles significant events in the website’s early life.

Greed had a part to play in this one. For the ‘new’ look, I needed a server that was bigger than Angelfire’s 50MB. This was where I started to get greedy, and set off to look for servers that had unlimited web space, but without the annoying ad banners. Pop Ups would be OK though. I found many solutions, but they would not offer space for MP3 files which cheesed me off big time.

Then I found it – the biggest mistake of my life. Continue reading Dreadknux’s Diaries: The False Move

OPINION: Dreamcast Dead?

Heard a rumour that the Dreamcast is dead? At first glance this may all seem like some sort of self-destructive pattern on Sega’s part , and that may make you lose your faith in the company as a fan. But, as this massive news special will soon explain, the odds are all in the favour of the Dreamcasters. First off, let’s address the rumours and stories and whatnot (that sounds SO English. Dreadknux’s Diaries: The Beginning of the Future…

This is a series of personal blogs written by Dreadknux during the formative years of The Sonic Stadium. It chronicles significant events in the website’s early life.

If you recall back to December 2000 (or simply look at my ‘dairy entries’ for that month) you’ll notice that the Sonic Stadium got a fair few visitors to start off with, and then it all started going downhill. Worse, no-one appeared at the Message Board, no-one was listening to the guff-sounding ‘Sonic Groove Choons FM’ (can’t blame them), and I was designing a new look site in the hope that it may bring back visitors. Fan Game Review: Sonanoid

Sonanoid is based on the simple concept of Arkanoid. Wow. Use a ‘bat’ and ‘ball’ to hit blocks etc in the air. How… Fun… Zzzzzzzzz… I’m being a jerk obviously – actually Sonanoid is quite addictive, and H Hog has produced a rather fun game with a lovely Sonic twist. Gone are the usual blocks from other brick-busting games, and in come original Sonic items. Continue reading Fan Game Review: Sonanoid

Dreadknux’s Diaries: The Year 2000 Recap

This is a series of personal blogs written by Dreadknux during the formative years of The Sonic Stadium. It chronicles significant events in the website’s early life.

15th June 2000: Pre-Launch Prelude: I have always been a fan of Sonic. Always. Ever since the very first Sega home console, the Master System, which I bought instead of a Mega Drive. As the PlayStation started to take over, ‘Sonic mania’ died down. I got a Sega Saturn and N64, and enjoyed them both, but the love for Sonic slowly started to dwindle as I grew up. As an early teenager, Sonic’s image started to became too… childish. Continue reading Dreadknux’s Diaries: The Year 2000 Recap

TSS REVIEW: Sonic Adventure

Well, Sonic Adventure sees Sonic and Tails once again journeying to defeat Eggman, only the plot is much more epic this time. Sonic is seen chilling out in Station Square when a commotion in the street invites him to face off against a strange enemy made of water. When the creature is defeated, Sonic runs into Tails, who discovered a Chaos Emerald on his travels. The duo go to the Mystic Ruins. On the way they meet Eggman, who introduces the two to ‘Chaos’, the water monster Sonic fought earlier. Continue reading TSS REVIEW: Sonic Adventure

TSS REVIEW: Sonic R

Sonic R is exactly what it says on the tin – a racing game. Only… the ‘Racing’ is abbreviated with an ‘R’ and it’s not in a tin. It sees you take a whole cast of Sonic Team characters out on a racing revolution! A competition is being held on Sonic’s home grounds, and the blue blur just can’t help but notice it. Sonic can’t turn something like this down. Tails joins him in signing up for the competition, however it they soon find out that it was all just a ploy set out by Dr Robotnik to trap the blue hedgehog. The swine. Here’s the final Sonic game released on the Mega Drive, before the blue blur moved on to the Sega Saturn. On a similar note, but on a different whistle, this game marks Sonic’s debut on Sega’s 32-bit powerhouse. A totally new ploy has been devised by Eggman, involving Flickies. These strange birds live in another dimension and can warp anywhere via large rings. Continue reading TSS REVIEW: Sonic 3D Flickies’ Island
