Sonic Talk’s Interview With Ken Balough Now Up

Hi guys. Like what you read in the little tease yesterday? Well the main course is now up! Here we have a roughly 40 minute interview with Ken Balough where we ask him every question we can possibly think of in regards to Sonic 4 Episode 2. Want details on what’s been changed with the physics? How Sonic CD fits into the series? Why the trailer was so springeriffic? Why Tails isn’t playable? Then click the link below. Just keep in mind, we also did a regular podcast in addition to the interview. The podcast is in the middle.

New Sonic 4 Episode 2 Video, Releasing in May?

Not happy with the quality of the first Sonic 4 video? No worries, we found another one! This one is from Gamerlive.tv as they talk with a SEGA rep demonstrating the game at the event. There isn’t much new information in the video itself, aside from one somewhat disappointing piece of news: despite earlier claims from Phandroid that SEGA had told them the game was coming out in April, the SEGA rep in the video claims the game is in fact still being released in May. He also says that Tegra platforms will be getting the game a few weeks before other platforms.

So, which is it, an April release or a May release? Only time will tell, but I am pretty sure that either way, this only effects users of Tegra chip powered platforms.

SEGA and NVIDIA Give Sonic 4 Episode 2 It’s First Public Demo, Give Rough Release Date

Last night, Sonic 4 Episode 2 made its surprise first public appearance at Mobile World Congress 2012, courtesy of SEGA and NVIDIA. The above demo is being played on a Tegra 3 Android device, streaming to an HD television. Today, SEGA also confirmed a mid-April release date for the Android version of the game. Though, keep in mind, only Android devices with the Tegra 3 chip will be compatible with this version.

USAopoly Making Sonic Branded Board Games

USAopoly, a US based board game company, is now making several Sonic branded board games, including:

 • A Sonic Die Cut Puzzle game, being sold for $14.99
 • A Sonic memory game, also being sold for $14.99
 • Finally, the holy grail of the bunch, a Sonic branded Monopoly game, currently priced between $30-$40.

All of these games are expected to launch sometime in August 2012. Unfortunately, there are no images or additional information available. Anyone want to start making predictions on properties and pieces? A metal Sonic shoe is most definitely a shoe in.

Special thanks to SSMB member Hogfather for bringing this to our attention, as well as SEGAbits/SEGA Memories staff member Barry the Nomad for making the awesome image you see above! If you want to see the fan made board game Barry created the image for, you can follow its production here.

Sonic 4 Episode 2 Achievements, Level Names Revealed

The Sonic 4 news keeps on coming! Today, we have a list of achievements and the names of three levels, courtesy of Xbox360Achievements and SEGAbits. Through these achievements we now know the game has an optional world map, which can be skipped through the entirety of the game to get a “Endurance Race” achievement. We also know the name of three more stages, castle stage we’ve been seeing in a lot of screenshots: Sylvania Castle Zone, Sky Fortress Zone and the snow stage, according to translations from Sonic Retro and SEGAbits, is called White Park Zone.

Sonic CD Tops PSN Charts in December

I can’t remember the last time I got to see this headline, let alone write it, but indeed it seems to have finally happened: a Sonic game has topped a sales chart. Sonic CD, the port of the legendary SEGA CD title managed to become the best selling on the PSN for the month of December, outselling other titles such as inFamous 2: Festival of Blood.

Sonic CD’s success on the PSN shows just how strong Sonic brand is more then 20 years after his debut. Given how fun Sonic CD is all these years later, it’s no surprise. These games definitely have a timeless quality to them!

You can find the full PSN chart after the break.

Archie’s Sonic Magazine Doing Sonic 4 Episode 2 Adaption This Spring

The second issue of Archie’s Super Sonic Special magazine has launched today, and while the issue itself contained nothing but reprints, interviews and a timeline, the next issue looks like it’ll be stepping things up a bit. With issue 3, which is expected to launch this Spring, Archie will be including an all new adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 2! Archie is no stranger to video game adaptions, but this super special will mark the first time since Super Sonic Special #13’s Sonic Adventure special that Archie has made a video game adaption the central storyline in a comic!

More interesting is how Archie promotes the issue: “Sonic’s hottest new game is getting the comic book treatment!” Archie typically releases their adaptions around the same time as the game their adapting, meaning that this could indicate a Spring release for the next episode of Sonic 4! This is, of course, all speculation, but Archie releasing an early adaption of Sonic 4 would be unusual. We’ll hopefully learn how accurate this speculation is soon enough.

E3 2011: Sonic Generations Preview

Last year, Takashi Iizuka separated the Sonic fandom into classic fans and modern fans, claiming you couldn’t please both. A year later, one of Iizuka’s own creations looks like it will prove this statement false.

This is it. If Sonic Colors could qualify as a dessert, Sonic Generations is definitely looking to be the main course. The HD graphics are beautiful, better then Unleashed. The physics in the classic game play are nearly dead-on, with all the momentum of the classics intact. Modern Sonic’s levels are as fast as they were in Unleashed, without any pesky QTE sequences getting in the way. As awesome as Sonic Colors was, I can’t help but believe that any disillusioned Sonic fan who still believes Sonic is still down in the trash of the gaming industry will finally see this game as his redemption.

Graphically, Generations is a veritable tour de force of color and style. The art style of Green Hill shines through vividly here. The flowers and rocks and green checkerboard grass are all how you remember them, except this time rendered in stunning fully 3D HD polygons. It’s great to see the classic style of the old games rendered so well here. On top of these beautiful graphics, Sonic Generations is also the first game to be rendered in eye popping 3D across all platforms! That’s right, the 3DS version isn’t the only one getting the 3D treatment. Both the PS3 and the Xbox versions will be capable of displaying in 3D. The 3D effects aren’t terribly noticeable during classic Sonic’s game play, but during the speedy sections of modern Sonic’s level the 3D really pops. Things aren’t all rosey with the visuals though. Much like the Sonic Colors E3 demo last year, this demo does have a rocky frame rate. The game can become really choppy at times. Hopefully this issue will be resolved by the time the game arrives in stores this holiday.

Despite the funky frame rate, the game is still incredibly fun to play. Classic Sonic’s game play is likely to be the biggest crowd pleaser. I’m happy to say I tried all the tricks Brad told me about for Sonic 4 last year, and the results were good. Unlike Sonic 4, Sonic Generations’ Sonic does not stop dead in his tracks or in mid air when the player stops pushing forward on the controller. Sonic cannot stroll up inclines, nor can he stand on walls or in loops. Gravity will push you down hard if you don’t gather enough momentum.

That being said, classic Sonic still moves way faster than he did in the Genesis games, and the level design itself is a bit different. There are still a lot of bumpers that bounce you around in some places, but there is not one booster pad in site. There were many diverse paths to try as well. It’s not an exact replica of the classic Genesis games, but it still acts as a nice, effective homage.

Modern Sonic game play is as you’d expect: really fast, very boost centric, and incredibly hectic. Modern Sonic’s version of Green Hill is a fun level, and it’s certainly well designed. Those disappointed with Sonic Colors being a mostly 2D game will be happy to know that at the very least the Green Hill stage is more 3D then it is 2D.

All in all, Sonic Generations is shaping up to be even better then Colors, and something that should finally please retro fans and modern fans alike. This game does indeed outdo Sonic 4, Sonic Unleashed, and Sonic Colors in on fell swoop, if this stage is any indication. Hopefully, this game won’t hit any pot holes along the way, such as the sudden revelation that classic Sonic is murdered and replaced by a jealous Bubsy the Bobcat half way through. Fingers crossed, people!

Sonic Adventure Coming to the Art of Video Games Exhibit

According to our good friends over at SEGAbits, the original Sonic Adventure will be appearing as part of the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s “Art of Video Games” exhibit. The game won via a public vote the Smithsonian held earlier in the year, over Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi.

Sonic Adventure wasn’t the only Sonic Team game to win, though. Phantasy Star 1 and 4 also made it, as well as Chu Chu Rocket. Unfortunately, Sonic CD lost to Earthworm Jim for the Sega Genesis/CD action game placement, and NiGHTS -criminally- lost to Tomb Raider for the SEGA Saturn’s action game placement. For a full list of winners, including a full list of every single SEGA game that made it in, head over to SEGAbits.

The Smithsonian’s “Art of Video Games” exhibit will run from March 16th to September 30th, 2012.

Phantasy Star Online 2 Trailer, Screenshots Unveiled

You may remember the big announced regarding PSO2 last year, right? Well, SEGA has finally released a new trailer and screenshots for the game. The trailer and it’s subsequent translation can be seen below. For screenshots, head over to the source, SEGAbits.

The following translation was done by the website andriasang.

As reported at 4Gamer, the video Sega showed at the event had a bunch of phrases that may provide some hints about the game’s background.

First, what appears to be the overarching story:

The ship fleet Oracle (written in Japanese, “オラクル”) which travels the endless stars. A new adventure that awaits on the countless planets. Invasion of the malice that covers the universe. The name of the people who face off against them is Arcs (in Japanese, “アークス”). Will the universe be saved, or will it be swallowed up? It’s in the hands of the hero (you).

The above is just a super quick translation of 4Gamer’s summary. 4Gamer said that it might have made some errors in its transcript.

The video also mentioned a few key words and phrases:

Is there adventure in today’s RPGs?
Always, to a new field. Random field.
Original Combos
TPS style
Jump Action
Hybrid Custom Action
It gives you a foreboding feeling — seamless weather.
Something will happen every time!? Interrupt event
Aiming for “Endless Advneture.”
The adventure without end, once again.

Phantasy Star series producer Satoshi Sakai took the stage at the event and said that the staff is aiming to give players the feeling of adventure that has been lost in today’s RPGs. He described the game as “a brand new title” and said that he hopes the game will be enjoyed by series fans, online gamers and even players who have yet to get into online games.

Further details on the game will be released ahead of the alpha test, which kicks off this summer.

At the moment, this game is only confirmed as a PC release.

Prope Reveals New Game, Rodea: The Sky Soldier

It’s been around five years since Yuji Naka parted ways with SEGA and formed Prope. Since then, his games have mostly been small projects for download services and handhelds, as well as the strange Wii party game Let’s Tap. Now it looks like we may finally be getting a game fans of his old work can sink their teeth into: Rodea: The Sky Soldier.  The game is meant to be a spiritual successor to NiGHTS, and looking at the trailer I see the inspiration. Take a look. If anything, the music is incredible.

Rodea is not the game’s Japanese name, by the way. It’s full Japanese name is actually Tenkuu no Kishi Rodea. Rodea: The Sky Soldier is actually the game’s western trademark, which seems to indicate we’ll be getting a localization. Cross your fingers!

Sumo Digital Hiring For SEGA Allstars Racing 3DS? UPDATE: Maybe not.

UPDATE: Seems my reservations were fully justified. The abbreviations at the bottom stand for programming tools. Hopefully we are getting a game like this, but either way this job listing is not a sign of it. I still encourage you to click the SEGAbits link at the bottom to enter the wider world of SEGA!

Maybe, I don’t know. It’s what Go Nintendo seems to be implying at least. Sumo Digital has put out a job listing for a senior artist, and “SSR 3DS” appears to be listed as one of the projects. I am personally crossing my fingers on this one. ASR is one of those games I am hoping we’ll get a 3DS port of. Here’s the job listing in full:

Sonic Comics Dropping Comic Code Authority Seal

As of next month, Sonic comics will no longer carry the CCA seal. The CCA is a ratings authority which was established in the 1950s amid a witch hunt that targeted the comic book industry. Led by psychiatrist Frederick Werthem, the industry reacted by setting up the CCA to regulate itself and censor questionable content. This regulation nearly destroyed the industry and has since become more lax over the years. Archie Comics was one of the few companies that continued to use the CCA stamp on all of it’s publications.

So what does this mean for the Sonic comics? Not a whole lot, actually. Archie Comics Mike Pellerito tolds Newsarama “”The code never affected us editorially the way I think it did other companies,” he said. “You know, we aren’t about to start stuffing bodies into refrigerators or anything. We have to answer to Archie fans.”

So I guess you guys won’t have to look at that ugly stamp anymore!

The Entire SEGA Sonic Supporting Cast Battles It Out in Sonic Universe #24

Seems shipping problems caused the next issue of Sonic Universe #24 to be a week late. Nevertheless, it’s here and it’s the best (non shipper) fan service a Sonic fan could ask for! Everyone from Shadow the Hedgehog to Bean the Dynamite are battling it out in this issue, and boy is it fun. Omega fans may be displeased with the ending though, as Omega lets a bit of mushy side out…and there’s also a slightly odd shipping moment I’m not sure anyone saw coming. If I wanted to spoil it I’m not sure what I’d even call it. Nevertheless I’m sure there is at least one Sonic fan out there who supports it.

In any case, here is the preview!

Sonic’s Betrayed in Sonic #220, Now On Newstands (Preview Inside)

This is a story that’s going to draw a lot of applause and skepticism, as it’s easily one of the most profound change Ian Flynn has introduced since he was brought on the book. Sonic is betrayed by a character who has his purpose and intentions completely changed from the day he was brought onto the book. I’m not sure what to make of it at the moment, and I personally intend to ride this one out and see where it goes before judging the move. This could very well be the beginning of some very nice stories, or could mean the sloppy permanent butchery of a character I appear to like more then many others.

Below is the preview and the solicit.

Yardley Draws the Sonic Eggs Holiday Special: Finale

Not much for me to really say here. If you’re just joining us, check out the first page and the primer that explains the Gran Gordo persona here. As for the little hints at romance below, well…they where originally suggested in the official Sonic X comic, and they where not taken much farther then they are here.

Tracy Yardley is the primary artist for Sonic Universe, and before that was the primary artist for the main book and did lots of work on Sonic X. Sonic Eggs is an ECC comic from Jason Berry, aka Jason the Jackass of Sonic Stadium. It is a continuation/parody of the Sonic X comic, and takes place within the X continuity, though is self aware enough of the continuity’s faults to make them the butt of many of the strip’s jokes. The first two issues of Sonic Eggs, as well as the Egg Whites strips and a variety of other comics, can be found at Emerald Coast Comics.

This is the final page in the holiday special. With this up, happy holidays, we’ll see you next Saturday when the regular Eggs story resumes.

Tracy Yardley Does the Sonic Eggs Holiday Special: Part 4

Tracy went above and beyond with this page. It’s rather large, but very well done, and he even added a nice action scene into the mix, at the expense if adding an extra half page to the comic. Our holiday tale has reached it’s climax now. Enjoy!

Sonic Comic iTunes App Launches!

Archie has been pushing the sale of their comics over digital services for awhile now. While initially the selection of Sonic comics over these digital services have been limited, they have gradually begun to improve.

Now, with the launch of the Sonic Comic app for iTunes, it seems they are finally beginning to offer more comics over the service, many of them only available exclusively through this app. This new app has over 50 issues from the Archie Sonic series and it’s spin offs. Most are selling for $.99, a third of the comic’s current retail price. These issues span from the first mini series released in the early 90s, all the way through to much more recent comics from Ian Flynn’s run. The app itself can be downloaded for free on the iPhone and iPad. It was created by iVerse, which sells a variety of comics digitally.

It’s a Yardley Christmas: Sonic Eggs Holiday Special

Yes folks, as a special Christmas treat I have commissioned Tracy Yardley to do the art, colors and letters for a 5-page Sonic Eggs Christmas special written by Sonic Stadium editor Jason Berry. You may remember Tracy doing some work for the main Eggs late in the summer.

The first page is going up now, and it’ll be followed by a new page every day up to Christmas eve.

But first, I know some of you have never read the Sonic X comic and may not be familiar with one of the characters in this special, “El Gran Gordo”.

El Gran Gordo is basically Dr. Eggman’s “Good” persona. He was created by Ian Flynn around Sonic X #26 in which Eggman hatched a scheme to make extra money for his plots by posing a fake luchador wrestler. He used a form of trickery using heavy magnets and nanomachines to force his opponents to the mat. Chris Thorndyke (the snotty little rich kid in the anime XD) is a huge fan of El Gran Gordo while Sonic sees through Eggman’s disguise. Sonic challenged Egg-errr “El Gran Gordo” to a match and the two duked it out with Sonic as the victor. However, for the sake of Chris feelings, Sonic kept Eggmans persona a secret.

Eggman ended up loving the adoration of the crowd and would then go on to show up in a few more issues. Even playing the good guy! Errrr…sorta. Even to the point of teaming up with Sonic and making him his new sidekick “El Rapido Azule”. In Sonic X #32, Sonic finally forced Eggman to give up his “El Gran Gordo” persona. Guess he’d a rather have Eggman as a villain than to share the spotlight of adoration with anyone. It should also be noted that Eggman has a huge crush on the Thorndykes heavy housemaid Ella (both of which are voiced by Mike Pollock in the anime). While Ella can’t stand Eggman, she does have a thing for El Gran Gordo.

And now, without further ado…

Knuckles Archives Confirmed, Next Sonic Comic Story Teased

It’s been a long time in coming, but it seems Archie is finally collecting their old Knuckles spin off series into it’s own series of graphic novels! The advent of this series was heavily implied  by new Archie Sonic editor Paul Kaminski in our exclusive interview back in July.

Very little is known about the series at the moment. It was confirmed in Sonic Archives #14, and a teaser image of the cover was posted in Sonic #220. We have a scan of that image posted below, alongside a teaser image of the upcoming Sonic storyline, “Sonic: Genesis”.

Ian Flynn Teases Future Plans for the Sonic Comic

Every year, Ian Flynn gives fans a little Christmas present: vague details on what’s going to happen within the Sonic comic over the next year. This year, Ian Flynn hinted at some big things that are liable to get fans excited. Since I know many of you don’t visit Bumbleking, here is what he’s said, in full:

It’s that time of year again, folks. That festive time of year where I give you all tantalizing hints of what’s in store for the upcoming year, and you all delight me by going insane trying to figure things out. Fa-la-la-la-la-bwah-ha-ha-HA!

All of these plans are not set in stone. Nothing is for certain until it’s actually published. Things may change as of this post.

The new kid on the block! I still can’t say anything about the series, except to say it’s about Mega Man and Spaz is at least doing cover art. Maybe more.

SONIC UNIVERSE
We’ve got three arcs lined up for the year, as per usual. The first one, as you all know by now, will be starring Silver to coincide with the book’s silver anniversary. This arc was inspired by editor Paul Kaminski’s desire to see Silver fight one of the coolest villains of the series. I found a nice little patch of continuity to explore in the process. The results will be glorious.

After that, we’re going to do an arc focusing on a character we haven’t seen in a while. We’ll also be delving into the backstories of some supporting cast members I’ve wanted to get to for a long time.

And then, as revealed by the man himself, Tracy Yardley will be returning to writing duties! I don’t want to steal any of his thunder, so I’m staying mum on this. Suffice to say, he showed me the story outline and I giggled like a fan boy. You guys are in for a major treat.

GRAPHIC NOVELS
Sonic Select vol. 3 and Sonic Archives vol. 14 are on the way. Keep your eyes on the blogs for a special contest announcement about the latter.

You’ll also want to check out Sonic Archives for a tease about the upcoming new graphic novel series. And that’s plural.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG
Oh man, where to begin….

Okay, so, obviously we’re coming up on the big #225 anniversary issue. Which happens about the same time as SU#25. Which also syncs up with the franchise’s 20th anniversary. An alignment of the Sonic stars cannot go by without something big happening. That will be “Genesis.”

And even that is going to be a drop in the bucket compared to what we’ve got planned.

When I first came to the book, my agenda was measured in issues and arcs. Trim the fat here, organize characters there, get everything in order. Then I upgraded to sagas – “Enerjak: Reborn,” “Eggman Empire,” “Iron Dominion.” What we’ve got coming up, started by STH#219, is bigger than that. What’s coming isn’t an “arc” or “saga” so much as it is an “epic.” Events set into motion now will literally be playing out for years to come.

I’m especially excited for what’s coming because, up to this point, it’s mostly been about building and organizing. There will still be some of that, but from here on out, nothing is sacred. It’s time to shake things up – hard. And it’s not going to tie itself up in a neat little bow any time soon. You guys are at the start of a far reaching adventure. I can’t wait for you all to see it!

Happy Holidays,
Ian

Sonic Colors Saw Highest Pre-sales Ever, 3 New Games for 2011

The quote below is from SEGA’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Alan Pritchard…

“[Colours] is our pure Sonic gaming experience. That’s had some high scores. It’s also the highest pre-selling pure Sonic title we’ve had ever. That’s a good indication. With the quality of the game, we’re confident of that. That’s our pure platforming Sonic.”

“We have some announcements in the early part of next year that will further support and add to this strategy. There will be two of three big Sonic announcements in the early part of next calendar year.”

Needless to say, we all hope Colors did rather well for itself. Hopefully SEGA will release some hard numbers on it eventually. Here’s hoping that these future games continue what was started this year with the likes of Colors and All Stars Racing. Any guesses on what these three titles may be?

In the same interview, Pritchard also mentioned that there will be four to five 3DS titles based one existing franchises released in the coming calender and financial year.

TSS Review: Sonic Colours

It’s no secret that Sonic has been… lost over these last few years. It seems like ever since he left the Dreamcast, Sonic’s been going on a journey of self discovery to “find himself.” He’s tried team-work gameplay, sword play and has even let Shadow take the reins for a game. These various directions have had a variety of different results, but none of them have felt like a true successor to Sonic Adventure 2. Continue reading TSS Review: Sonic Colours

Archie Takes Penders to Court Over Character Copyrights

I’m sure you all remember Ken Penders’ attempt to copyright everything he did while working for Archie’s Sonic the Hedgehog comic this summer. Since his initial announcement, there has been very little visible legal movement between Penders and Archie, aside from Archie’s claims Penders’ suit didn’t make it past the first phone call from Archie’s lawyers, and Penders’ claims to the contrary.

Now, for the first time in a while, we have some genuine legal activity between the two parties: Archie is now taking Penders to court. Filed on November 23rd, the case is challenging the constitutionality of state statutes. That means this case will be challenging the laws that allowed Penders to file his copyrights. This case will be done in Federal Court and can, conceivably, go all the way up to the Supreme Court should either party want to take it that far.

We’ve contacted Archie for comment on this law suit, and we’ll let you know if Penders comments on this via his forums. Until then, you can see the case details of Archie Comic Publications, Inc v Penders.

Sonic Colors TV Spot Is Sonic Fast

SEGA America has been epic enough to put up the surprisingly awesome American Sonic TV spot. Kind of reminds me of the SA2 and Mario & Sonic TV spots.

Interview: Sonic Colors Adaptation – Tracy Yardley!

Well, it’s here! The final part of our Sonic Colors adaptation interview. Tonight, we interview Tracy Yardley!, the penciler for story. We’ve also got some never before seen art straight from the story, courtesy of Archie and SEGA.

TSS: Hello Mr. Yardley, thank you for taking the time to talk with us. When were you given the Sonic Colors assignment?

TY: The script was emailed to me on July 15.

TSS: How much time did you have to work on this adaptation compared to a typical Sonic story?

TY: I wasn’t given a specific deadline. Paul just said as fast as possible.I sent back scans of the pencils on July 23. I know it didn’t take me seven days to do though. I was almost certainly working on another issue at the time.

TSS: What sorts of materials did SEGA give you to make a proper adaptation of the game?

TY: They gave us much more than they usually do. I was given many many screenshots from the game, as well as pre-production art and an unfinished game trailer.

TSS: What are the differences between working on a game adaptation and working on a regular Sonic story?

TY: Mostly that Sega is much more particular about matching the visuals as closely to the game material as possible. And it usually seems to be a rush job. The Sonic and the Black Knight story was completed from script to finished colors in something like  3 or 4 days if I remember correctly.

TSS: Did you run into any unique challenges when working on this story?

TY: Not anything too bad. The game stories are always fun for me. The only real difficulty was with the first panel on the first page. It called for this planetary elevator, and there was no very clear shot of it in the art reference I was given. I did the best I could with what I had and I’m pleased with how the whole thing turned out.

TSS: Thank you for your time, Mr. Yardley

Finally, here’s the art we promised:
