Toy Maker Zappies Claim New Sonic Racing Game for 2018

Over in Nuremberg, the annual Spielwarenmesse toy fair is underway and as usual the toy makers are showing off their new toys for release later this year. Well, one such toy maker has just added fuel to a fire which had been virtually extinguished earlier this week.

Zappies who were responsible for a number of All Stars Racing Transformed toys way back when the game was first release were at the convention and have allegedly told Spindash.de that there is a third Sonic racing game on the way!

Whilst there is no outright proof of such a game, what strongly supports it is that their booth is full of the original ASRT toys which went out of production years ago. They claim these are here as placeholders in a bid to give some retailers an idea as to what the new game and toys will look like.

This comes less than a week after a document from Sumo Digital was leaked which suggested a new ‘Kart Racer’ from a ‘Global IP’ was in development, and just days after Aaron Webber claimed that it wasn’t happening.

Keep checking TSS, hopefully we can get all this resolved very soon!

[UPDATE] Is SEGA Searching For a New Sidekick For a Future Sonic Game?

Sonic's Sidekick artist site

UPDATE: We have learned that while the Sonic page wasn’t archived at Google until April 17th 2014, the images were uploaded to Michael Nagy’s site July 15th 2013. It’s now very likely that this is a scrapped project.

Thanks to Gatestormer at the SSMB for the heads up!

ORIGINAL ARTICLE BELOW:
It appears SEGA may be on the hunt for a sidekick for a new Sonic game they’re working on behind the scenes fronted by a new worldwide campaign titled The Search for Sonic’s Sidekick. In slides discovered by The Sonic Stadium at ad agency DDB Tribal artist Michael Nagy’s website there are images of an online mobile game SEGA will use in a competition to get fans involved in the new campaign. DDB Tribal are responsible for major campaigns for events such as The Queens Diamond Jubilee and advertisements for a variety of big brand companies.

The aforementioned mobile game sees players in twelve cities around the globe create a character and then race their character around their city using Google’s Street View technology. You then log your best time onto the leaderboard and the player with the fastest time at the end of the competition will see their character in the next Sonic game. The competition will run for eleven months and visit a new city every month.

Sonic's Sidekick 3

We have created an online game using Google Street view where you compete to become Sonic’s sidekick. Your online avatar will be in the next game that is produced for Sonic. The competition will run for 11 months and move to a different city every month across the globe. The cities include Tokyo, Hong Kong, Berlin, Paris, London, Cape Town, Toronto, New York, San Francisco, Rio De Janeiro and Sydney.

Sonic's Sidekick 5

The description doesn’t mention whether this is a console or mobile title, but for a campaign this big, it’s likely this could be for the next big console game from Sonic Team after Sonic Boom. We checked on Google and this page was archived just last week on April 17th 2014, so it’s very recent. The website http://www.runthestreets.com isn’t live yet, but the domain does appear to be up for sale and a Whois check doesn’t show any ownership by SEGA or Google just yet.

It’s also worth noting that there is no mention or indication of the new character replacing Tails as Sonic’s sidekick, so don’t panic, Tails fans. This new character could likely be playing a sidekick role similar to Chip in Sonic Unleashed or Yacker in Sonic Colours. Whatever the role, the character will obviously be important to the new game.

The images are currently still live on Michael Nagy’s website, but you can also find all of them in our gallery below.

What do you think of this campaign? Is it a good idea to get fans involved in the creation of a new character?

RUMOUR: SEGA to Announce New Sonic Game Next Month?

Sega-Sonic logo

Sources close to SEGA have informed The Sonic Stadium that the publisher intends to announce/tease a new game within the Sonic the Hedgehog series next month. Sonic fans will recall that February 2nd is of course what SEGA calls ‘Hedgehog Day’, a day the company usually likes to tease fans about upcoming Sonic games. However, one of our sources states that the game won’t be announced until mid-February, while another just says we “will hear about it from official sources next month”. It’s likely SEGA could tease a reveal on Hedgehog Day and make a proper announcement later in the month. Continue reading RUMOUR: SEGA to Announce New Sonic Game Next Month?

RUMOUR: Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing Sequel/Remix in the Works?

We have received word from a tipster, who wishes to remain anonymous, that a new Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing game could be on the way. Our tipster recently spoke to a high ranking staff member at development studio Sumo Digital, and when queried about new projects, the developer gave the below reply.

“Now working on another title for Sega on 3DS, VITA and WiiU. [The] title we are working on is top secret but the last game we did for them was Sonic And Sega All-Star Racing, so the logical conclusion would be… :)”

While the game could be a sequel to 2010’s Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, there is also a possibility, given the platforms, that it could be a remixed version of the first game with new characters & courses specifically tailored to Wii U, 3DS & Vita. But having said that, the tipster informs us that the developer told them months ago that they will be doing no more additional work on the first game. Sonic 4: Episode 2 Confirmed, In Early Stages of Development

Here’s something that seems to have escaped many people’s notice. Over at the SEGA Forums SEGA’s Sonic 4 Brand Manager Ken Balough has confirmed work is officially underway on Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2. That may be a given, since the game is episodic, but this is the first we’ve heard from anyone at SEGA. Looking through a Sonic 4: Episode 2 topic at SEGA’s forum shows Balough has been doing some Q&A for over 2 weeks there, and we’ve picked some choice posts out below. SEGA Confirms Two New Sonics Coming In 2011

UPDATE: SEGA’s Alan Pritchard has confirmed to Joystiq that SEGA has two huge Sonic announcements coming early next year:

“The early part of next calendar year, we have two very exciting, huge announcements to make. I’d love to be able to tell you more about them now but I can’t. That’s further evidence of how we’re looking to improve and enhance our Sonic strategy.”

Thanks to Hero of Legend at the SSMB for the heads-up! /UPDATE END

SEGA Europe boss Jurgen Post has confirmed to MCV that SEGA is working on a new Sonic game they plan to release in 2011.

“We know we have Sonic and Football Manager this year, a new Total War next year, and a new Sonic and Virtua Tennis next year. These are the kind of titles that will allow us to focus on being healthy and profitable.”

No more information was given, so we’re left to speculate. Could this be Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2? The untitled Nintendo 3DS game revealed in press documents at E3? Maybe it’s the heavily rumoured Sonic Anniversary game? This is the first official word SEGA has shared in regards to new Sonic titles for release next year and with the last of the latest games being released next month, could SEGA be getting ready to talk about their 2011 plans soon? If a report from Platform Nation is to be believed, we could be hearing something October 22nd.

We’ll keep an eye open for any developments. For now, share your thoughts in the comments.

Rumour: New Sonic Announced Oct. 22nd? Anniversary Game Like Colours, SEGA Rep Comments

UPDATE: TJ Selinka asked some SEGA reps at NYCC about the Sonic Anniversary game, but could only get a “no comment”. Seems SEGA’s being very tightlipped about this rumor. /UPDATE END

Hot off the heels of today’s earlier rumours of a new Sonic Anniversary game and a new Mario & Sonic collaboration title, we’ve now got word from Platform Nation’s Scott diMonda that an embargoed Sonic game was on show at SEGA’s recent New York press event. The game is apparently a “sequel” and improves upon its predecessor. diMonda claims that details about this game will be released on October 22nd together with screenshots.

Recently I had the opportunity to attend a Sega event held at the Shoreham Hotel in NYC and got a look at Sega’s upcoming lineup and yes there was plenty of Sonic to go around and there is one game I am particularly stoked for but due to an embargo I can’t talk about what I seen so I wont even tease you about the game as you will see my take on this sequel that is going to be well worth the wait and the improvements are noticeable right away, but that is for another day (October 22nd) and I promise to bring along some screen shots for your viewing pleasure.

We’ve also heard from the guys at Sonic Reikai, who broke the initial rumours that the Sonic Anniversary game. The guys heard from SEGA of Spain reps that the game will play in 2D and 3D perspectives, just like in Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colours.

The anniversary one is a remake in 2D and 3D (As Unleashed, he dropped that but he didn’t said that clearly). Well, when he said that it will going to be a remake of the best Sonic levels, I asked him: “In 2D and 3D?” and he said: “In 2D AND 3D” , then I asked him again anyway “But in 2D and 3D” (and I pointed out the Colours game) and he replayed pointing out the same game: “In 2D and 3D”

SOJ and Takao Miyoshi <3 Shakey Mushrooms

SEGA of Japan have put up a mysterious website for a new game produced by Takao Miyoshi, the person from Sonic Team behind Phatasy Star Universe. The site says Coming Soon and has a mushroom on it similar to the mushroom from Super Mario Bros 1 except for the different colours. When you run your mouse over the mushroom it shakes. The web adress has the word ‘pole’ and at the bottom of the page there is a timer which is counting down to the games official unveiling I’m guessing. It currently states 10 days, 6 hours and 17 minutes. No platforms for the game are mentioned.

Wonder what this could be…
