TSS COMMUNITY RELEASE: The Sonic Stadium Music Adventure 2012

1Carbo_front

It’s been a long rough road, but it’s finally here! The Sonic Stadium is proud to present the sequel to last year’s album, and the second of a budding line of community releases – The Sonic Stadium Music Adventure 2012!

Even with a whopping nine month development period, I once again severely underestimated the creative ability of the TSS community. We had gone from last year’s 45 tracks and 19 artists to an uncontainable explosion of participation! I expected new records, but by this much? Never!

Spanning across 10 Acts, this leviathan of an album contains 143 songs, with an estimate 8 hours worth of music. A large cast of musicians and artists have each taken it upon themselves to redefine the Sonic music experience, be it through different genres, original efforts, or even collaborative works.

And you know what I think? They all succeeded.

As the figurehead for this project, I would like to thank Ian “bmn” Bennett for once again providing a webpage for the album, the SS:R crew for letting me broadcast the album during the SEGASonic:Radio Christmas Blast, the RadioSEGA staff who pitched in when the album stream borke, to EAR who made it his job to remaster the entire album, and to everyone who helped spread word of this project across the web!

And most of all, to everyone who gave it their all to make this the best collaborative effort in the history of forever, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you all so, so very much. This album could never have happened without any of you.

  1. Maybe I’m a little too attached to things but, for me, it is an extreme honor to be a part of something like this. Sonic and the community alike are nestled deep in my roots and it’s very humbling to be included alongside some seriously amazing talent. I am extremely thankful I not only go to be part of this MASSIVE project but I was able to pay respects to not only one of my favorite franchises but websites as well. I would be MORE than happy to lend new tracks / art to next year’s project and am extremely thankful I got to be included on this one.

    Thanks very much,
    Psy

    EXTREME

  2. Yes! Finally! I would like to congratulate all the composers who worked on this album because it is truly an achievement. Now if you’ll excuse me, I will be clicking the second option under “Downloads” for the first time, and I will be listening to this awesome music adventure! 😀

Oh! I would also like to thank Sonic the Hedgehog himself for introducing all this wonderful music into the world in the first place! 😉

  3. Having to listen from the website itself, as the first time I downloaded it, I got an error.
What I’m hearing so far though is brilliant! So much talent from the community.

      1. Just finished with the torrent download, and the list of songs will be waiting for me to listen to tomorrow.
Once I have, my favourite tracks will be going onto music devices for me to listen to on the go.

  4. Apologies for the download issues earlier – they were due to a misconfiguration on the server, and should be sorted out now.

  5. I’m still in Act 1 and so far the music is just amazing! So glad to be able to listen to great music from talented artists! ^_^

  6. I just love me some music from Vizard! I enjoyed your last year’s tracks, and these are no exception! 🙂

Also, DAT BLUE SPHERE REMIX! 😛

  7. Sorry, forgot to add:

Everyone should feel proud of their work! I will be downloading the whole thing later into my phone, and I will enjoy every single one of these tracks! Good job you guys. 😉

Btw, are there any OC Remixes, or just remixes? Any if anyone can please explain the difference between the two? Thanks!

    1. OC Remix is OverClocked Remix, basically one of the biggest VGM-remix based websites, if not the biggest. No real difference between OC Remixes and remixes – those you’re asking about are simply done under the OCR label, that’s all.

However, Rexy, one of OCR’s most prolific musicians if I do say so myself, did participate in this project! Dare I say she kicked, kicks, and will kick so much ass? Her stuff is amazing!

  8. First off, congrats to everyone involved! All of the music is great so far, and there are quite a few that sound like they actually belong in a Sonic game (the quality is that good!), while others have just as great a quality, but takes a song in a completely different direction than what you would expect, which is awesome! 😀
The ONLY critique that I would have is that the intro to some songs are sometimes a bit long. The intro is meant to be something powerful to draw a listener in, and all of the beginning parts of the songs were powerful, but I sometimes had a hard time locating the melody due to it being a tad bit drawn out. Something to think about for next time, NOT a bad thing at all! Maybe thats just a personal preference, but like I said, even the songs with what I’m talking about were awesome! I’m usually not too fond of remixes, because I become too attached to songs, (except for the ones included in Sonic Meponterations), but I am more than impressed! Definitely downloading it sometime, and going to make some room on my iPod, as it’s currently full lol
I’ve listened to just the beginning parts of each song, up to Act 7, so i’d like to point out a few of my favorites (although I’ve liked something about every song up to this point):
~Trip Down Memory Lane-Loved the nostalgic sound
~Snow-Blind Wonderland-Loved this song to begin with, and this made it sound awesome when not using the “Sonic 4” style music
    ~Tactile Snowfall-Just an awesome remix!
~A Blast From the Past (loved the original Sunset Hill Music to begin with, and loved Palmtree Panic Good Future, Splash Hill and Reach for the Stars worked in :D)
~Arid Bluff Suites – actually sounds like a Sonic song used in a Genesis game! Very impressive; big kudos to the Symphonic Games! 😀
~A BIT more Advance- Sounds like a Sonic advance ver. of Blue Sphere; Urban Flow definitely pulled that sound off!
~Arctic Rush- Recognized this immediately, been listening to it to death as part of the Melponterations soundtrack. favorite remix of IceCap!
~The Bassics of Adventure- Rock remix of Splash Hill? Yes please!
~Submerged scurry- I LOVE Aquarium Park’s music, and this was an awesome track; very upbeat, while still being subdued. This one is both calming, yet fitting for a fast-paced game. Excellent work!
~A Ghost in my Pumpkin Soup – WTF?! lol XD
~Can’t Stop? So what! Modern’s the Way I Like it! – Very impressive someone can get close to sounding like Jun Senoue on guitar. can’t go wrong with a Modern remix of Metal Harbor!
~Cluck Alert – Love Toxic Caves XD
~Beyond the Mist – Y’know, this song never gets enough recognition; one of my favorites from Black Knight, yet no one ever mentions it. Great, relaxing, professional-sounding remix!
~Evasion in Progress – Just awesome!
~Echoes of the Past – I’ve always loved this song, and love the reference to the name of the Knuckles arc in Sonic Universe!
~Hot Head Reef- Love the relaxing feel, and how the music from both acts are combined!
~Keys the Ruin for Modern- One of my favorite SA2 tunes, and this definitely sounds like it could be put in generations for a modern Pyramid cave level!
~Mean bean Dreams- Don’t hear remixes from this game very often! Love the use of the sound effects; very well implemented!
~The Eastern Hemisphere- Chun-Nan meets Planet Wisp! lol Love the original, and the Eastern flair is oddly fitting; a VERY professional sounding piece!
~Launching the Empire- One of those where the composer (Wolfblur) takes the song in the complete opposite direction that the original went in and I love it! Who would’ve though a rock remix of Levitated Ruin? And do I hear bits of Sky Fortress, Pirate Storm and Flying Battery mixed in? Brilliant!
~Just listened to Welcome to Genocide City-Thought it was an official song! Awesome job Alien.Renegade!

Like I said, all songs have been awesome up to the point I’m listening to; i’m up to the first song of Act 8. Everyone should be so proud of themselves; last years’ album was good, but this one is amazing! Congratulations and thanks for all of these great pieces of music 😀

  9. Thank you for making this awesome album i love it so much thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!!!

  10. MY EYES THEY ARE TEARING WITH JOY!!!!!!!!!!! OH MY GOSH ITS SO BEAUTIFUL THANK YOU!!!!

  11. I’m on Act3 and gotta say, some of the tracks so far are quite great, even for me who doesn’t easily enjoy remixes.

      1. Hats off and heart thumping for a supersonic aural treat! These are some of the best remixes I have ever heard from the community at large where music can often be so-so or just plain bad!

        1. Quantity and quality have kissed each other! This is absolutely amazing and my expectations have been exceeded extremely by the hundreds of times 😀 Seriously awesome work from everyone here, this just stands out so much that I have a frustrating helpless feeling of my words being understatements.

I ought to mention that I love the artwork too!

  12. :O i love the blue sphere remix 😀 to be honest, i think i like all of the tracks XD well, congrats to the contributing artists and the rest of the crew that were involved 😀

  13. @VizardJeffhog: I would like to point out a teenie weenie typo in the introductory text for the album on its official page. Where it says “the seven corners of the Earth” it should say “the four corners of the Earth.” You must have been thinking of the expression “the seven seas” or something like that at moment you wrote it and then blurred the two idioms together. 😉

  14. Lovin it!! Brilliant work all of you!! So many talented people. My personal fav at the moment is Trap Tower by Rexeljet. Sega Sonic Arcade doesn’t get enough love, and it did have some very catchy music. Great choice, a great remix that still stays true to the original, keeping all the catchy bits 🙂

  15. “It’s been a long rough road but it’s finally here!” Am i the only person who got that?

  16. For my own curiosity, I tried putting together a list of Sonic games that did have remixed music featured in this album, and another list of games I thought were notable enough to care about (not compilations, remakes, crossovers, etc.) that didn’t get music in. If anyone notices glaring omissions from either list leave a comment.

    Featured:
    Sonic the Hedgehog 1 (Genesis)
Sonic the Hedgehog 1 (Game Gear)
    Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis)
    Sonic the Hedgehog 3
    sonic & Knuckles
    Blue Sphere
    Sonic CD
    Sonic Blast
    Sonic Chaos
    Tails Adventure
    Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
    Sonic 3D Blast
    Sonic Spinball
    Sonic Adventure
    Sonic Adventure 2
    Sonic Advance
    Sonic Advance 2
    Sonic Advance 3
    Sonic Mega Collection
    Sonic Heroes
    Shadow the Hedgehog
    Sonic Rush
    Sonic Rush Adventure
    Sonic Colors
    Sonic & the Secret Rings
    Sonic Unleashed
    Sonic & the Black Knight
    Sonic Rivals 2
    Sonic the Hedgehog (’06)
Segasonic the Hedgehog – trap tower
    Sonic 4: Episode 1
    Sonic 4: Episode 2
Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie [obviously not a game, but it’s in there]

    Missing:
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Game Gear)
    Sonic Triple Trouble (Game Gear)
    Sonic Labyrinth
    Tails Skypatrol
    Sonic Eraser
    Knuckles Chaotix
    Sonic R
    Sonic the Fighters
    Sonic Shuffle
    Sonic Battle
    Sonic Chronicles
    Sonic Riders
    Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity
    Sonic Rivals
    Sonic Free Riders

[these games contained mostly music from other games, but none of their original music was remixed]
    Sonic Pocket Adventure
    Sonic Jam
    Sonic Generations

And finally, due to unfamiliarity with these games, I don’t know if they even have any original music to remix, or if they are in fact already represented in the album and I just can’t find them.

    Unsure:
Sonic Drift [do the tracks use the music for the stages they’re based off?]
Sonic Drift 2 [do the tracks use the music for the stages they’re based off?]
Sonic Spinball (Game Gear) [does this have a different soundtrack than the Genesis version?]
Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine (Game Gear) [does this have a different soundtrack than the Genesis version?]
    Sonic Schoolhouse
    Sonic the Hedgehog Gameworld
    Tails and the Music Maker
    Sonic X (Leapfrog Leapster)
    Sonic the Hedgehog (Leapfrog Didj)
    SegaSonic Cosmo Fighter Galaxy Patrol

Overall quite an impressive collection of games (not to mention the other non-Sonic titles and original creations), though I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed at the lack of Sonic the Fighters and Sonic R remixes. Those were my 2 highest hopes for inclusion in this.

Regardless, great work to everyone who was involved. I’m enjoying my 8 hours of new tunes.

    1. A few corrections – good ear though!

I represented Sonic 2 GG through Shattered Departure, the third last track of the album. That’s the credits/Bad Ending theme that a lot of people attribute to Tails being dead.
Sonic Battle was covered through the “Guess What I Did Today?” track by sonicsneakers – it’s the game’s Happy theme!
DJ Sonic’s PIG CITY BEATS is a mix of a Sonic Shuffle piece, as put together by Freen in Green!
EAR, 2Gryphon, EXshad, and Rexy all worked on a mix of Blast Town, which is the background music to 80s and 90s Boulevard, two stages from Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity!

There are some Sonic R tunes I’m interested in covering… I’ll see to that for the third album. Thanks for your input!

        1. Oh! So that is where that intro is from! I knew it sounded familiar, but I couldn’t manage to put my finger on it. Thanks!

      1. Heh, well thanks for the complement, but it wasn’t so much “good ear” as “good work reading the ‘… for [stage name]'” at the end of each song. Looks like I missed a couple that I wasn’t familiar with and some more that just didn’t have that subtitle.

Still though, that brings the represented games up to at least 35, and missed only at about 11. And I would be absolutely shocked if someone did actually remix one of the 2 or so original pieces in Sonic Pocket Adventure or thought the music in Sonic the Hedgehog Gameworld was catchy and memorable enough to remix, so this is somewhat slanted towards emphasizing the unrepresented. Yay, statistics!

  17. Fairly great album (:
However, my main gripe with this is that most of the songs included don’t get right to the juice of the music or the melody but start with a really long jarring intro. I can see openings begin used in a good way but most of those used here are really kinda distracting and add nothing but unnecessary extra length and make otherwise good songs sound.. a bit worse.
Now, there are some exceptions like Frog Forest’s intro which really sets the mood and isn’t that long, and chrome gadget’s which give you a hint at the melody at the begging, jumps to some drums for a few secs, and right to the music, Chu-nan, Tempest Travels, Yellow Desert act 2 and another handful of songs.
Anyways, an overall great album. Can’t wait for the next one!
