Steve Lycett under his S0L nickname has responded to rubber banding discussion’s over at the SEGA forums by detailing how it all works in Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing.

Here’s Steve’s response –

You can enable catch-up for human players (in Multiplayer that is, both online and split-screen), but the aim is for the weapons and All-Stars to do the movement through the pack.

Or you can turn it off – and see who is actually better at racing 😛

So, very good news for gamers who hate ‘rubber banding’ in multi-player games like Mario Kart and should make for some interesting race’s online. No word on single player but the way Steve says “in multiplayer that is,” we can assume it is in single player, we’ll let you know if we hear any different.

Meanwhile, are you happy with Sumo Digital’s decision to make this optional in multiplayer? Let us know in the comments.

  1. Good to hear the better players won’t get penalized for being… better players.
Unless of course the games version of the blue shell gets over used like in Mario Kart Wii (What a terrible bleeping game)
Not the first time “catch up” was optional in a Sega game.. the Daytona arcades also had this feature

  2. thank GOD.
Games like mario kart wii annoy me like they’res no tomorrow.
You can be at least 8 seconds ahead then BOOM
BLUE SHELL, RED SHELL, THUNDER, STAR, BULLET BILL
    Hi I’m in 12th now
    >_>

  3. I think both Rubber-banding AND weapons/items should be optional. Only then can 2 rivals discover who is the better racer!

  4. @ Edwin : Imagine a rubber band around both your index fingers, the player in the lead is your left finger and the last place player is on your right. As the last players (right finger) distance increases from the lead player (move your right finger away from your stationary left finger) the more chance the last player has of “springing” back..

tl;dr – Easy catchup to the lead

  6. Thank God, and another reason this game is going to be better than MarioKart, the rubber banding in that game is so annoying. I’m so sick of hearing Nintendo fanboys spewing ‘Uhh MarioKart clone!!!’ pffft, they wish.

  7. I’m glad rubber banding will be optional. God knows I hated that Mario Kart. So many races lost…so many (goes into featle position)
