Sonic Movie Writer discusses Sequel ideas, Tails is their Nick Fury, Jim Carrey in a Fatsuit

The Sonic Move made huge waves from it’s announcement all the way up to it’s release in theaters, and with two stingers at the end (and a few other mysteries left unsolved) fans of all ages are asking questions about the sequel.

Fandom.com has launched it’s first ever episode of Hey Fandom! with Sonic Movie writer Pat Casey as their guest of honor. An “AMA” (Ask Me Anything) of sorts, this YouTube live stream allowed Casey an opportunity to field questions from fans about the movie’s development and future.

One of the more pressing questions has to do with the big name actor’s role of the iconic villain. When asked about Dr. Robotnik’s body shape in the film and whether or not he’d get fattened up from eating mushrooms on the Mushroom Planet, Casey had this to say:

“Maybe, I’m not sure,” said Casey. “I think that would be funny! Jim Carrey said ‘For the second one, I should have a giant fat suit.’ So he wants to do it but I think the producers are nervous about how long it would take to get him in and out of the fat suit every day. So we’ll see. Jim proposed that maybe he has an allergic reaction to the mushrooms and we see him just swelling up. We’ll see. Maybe we’ll do it.”

While the logistics of fitting the actor into a fat suit may prove to be too frustrating to consider, they are at least open to the idea. At the very least, having a permanent reaction from eating alien mushrooms would provide a hilarious reason for Robotnik’s iconic “egg shape” in the movie universe!

Another topic of discussion was the potential of seeing the mighty Super Sonic in a potential sequel:

“I don’t know. We’ll have to see…,” said Casey. “I mean, you’d have to get hold of a lot of Chaos Emeralds to make that happen. So I can’t really say. But we are all aware of Super Sonic!”

It seems like while he’s aware of Super Sonic, he’s also aware of the constraints it would have on the plot: the sequel would have to deal with the Chaos Emeralds, so it’s not surprising his response is brief; we wouldn’t want to potentially spoil the hypothetical sequel!

A similar question was asked about Sonic’s longtime ally Knuckles the Echidna. Despite the common lore of the Sonic series stating that Knuckles is the last of his kind, the “Knuckle Tribe” that made it’s first appearance in Sonic Adventure made a surprising big screen debut in the beginning of the film. When asked about the Echidna’s and Knuckles’ relationship (and potential appearance in a follow up), Casey had this to say:

I can’t reveal too much but they are Echidnas, and Knuckles is an Echidna so I would guess they’re related in some way, but what exactly that relationship is… We’ll have to see how things develop. But the Echidna tribe was definitely not chosen at random.

It seems like there’s much more planned for the tribe that made a brief cameo in the film, and it’s apparent the writers weren’t just doing a cursory search on Sonic lore and happened upon the Echidnas. We’re excited to see what a sequel could add to Knuckles’ backstory, should he feature!

Finally, our two-tailed friend is apparently their analog to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Nick Fury. Well, at least in regards to being a sequel-hooking stinger! Don’t expect Tails to don an eyepatch. But Casey had this to say about Tails appearing at the very end as opposed to either meeting Sonic or already being his buddy during the bulk of the film:

We love Tails and we wanted him in there so … once we realized he wasn’t going to be in the body of the movie, we were like, ‘Well, Tails will show up at the end, he’ll be our Nick Fury’, and that will get everyone stoked for a Part Two, hopefully, where we get to do the whole thing and really give Tails some exciting stuff to do. Which I’m really looking forward to. Hopefully.

There was a version where Tails was in the whole movie at one point but that kind of fell by the wayside.

While we knew that Tails was planned to appear as an end-credits cameo before the movie got it’s much-needed redesign, we didn’t know that he was originally going to play a larger role in earlier drafts of the movie! If a sequel is indeed in the works, it’s obvious that Sonic’s iconic sidekick is going to play a much, much larger role.

While those are all of the major highlights of the livestream, we’ll be sure to keep our eyes peeled for more news about the Sonic Movie’s development, as well as the potential sequel. Are you hoping for a follow-up as much as we are? Let us know in the comments!

…we’re just hoping to see Jim Carrey in a fat suit, honestly.

  1. If there’s going to be a sequel, here are some ideas of the plot:

    – did Sonic and Tails knew each other on his home planet? If so, how about a 3-4 minute introduction of their encounter?
    – It’s been 4 months since Sonic started living with the Wachowski’s and his life has been great -no more hiding, but still he does some sightseeing from up above the buildings of Green Hills
    – At a local bar, Crazy Carl starts shouting the sightings of a flying fox near the forest, and Tom decides to tell Sonic about this. Tom and Sonic do some investigation and they meet up with Tails
    – At home Tails tells Sonic about the situation on his home planet, and in the next morning, Sonic and Tails use a Warp Ring to go back
    – if in the first movie we had a good-side post-credit scene, then in the second movie, we must have a dark-side post-credit scene, where we see a shadow of Robotnik discovering a way out of the Mushroom Planet, via Warp Ring, and behind him a glowing red robotic eye, followed by an evil laugh

    How about this?

  2. I preordered Sonic the Hedgehog movie when it first was offered on Vudu and have been binge watching it ever since. I WANT A SEQUEL! I like Tails just as much as I like Sonic. Sonic needs his best friend. I think they should give Jim Carey his fat suit too. Even if it takes more time. Look how much those extra 3 months of time and effort paid off in getting Sonic right for the first one. I think it will really upset fans if we don’t get a fat Eggman. I know I will be. Please don’t ruin our childhoods.

  3. PLEASE LET THIS BE THE START OF A SEGA CINEMATIC UNIVERSE 🙏🤞😊🤞

  4. Nah

While the movie was a bigger success than anyone expected with a fairly generous review score, they shouldn’t push their luck with a sequel
