We’ve seen some interesting Sonic game mods in our time, but this one takes us right back to our childhood – one plucky PC hacker is reworking Sonic Mania Plus to include famous Disney characters, turning the high-paced platformer into something reminiscent of the 1992 Mega Drive classic World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.
JSevion is the mastermind behind the current work, titled ‘Mickey Mania Plus’, and is chronicling progress on their YouTube channel. We clocked the following video of Donald Duck fighting through Hydrocity Act 2 in his infamous disgruntled manner, and thought it was too good not to share.
What we love about this how much attention to detail has been paid to the sprite work here. There are a few kinks here and there that you can see – Donald Duck is based off of the Knuckles moveset, and at times you can see glitches of the original Knuckles animations – but it’s a stunning effort to date. The way the moody duck has been re-imagined to allow for Spin Attacks and Dashes is quite inspired.
This is a recent-ish video, from a few months ago, so it’s likely that things have progressed further. JSevion’s latest video on their channel includes some gameplay involving Mickey Mouse as well, which is worth watching too.
Still a bit of Knuckles leftover. Still good, though.
