Sonic Comics Dropping Comic Code Authority Seal

Sonic Comics Dropping Comic Code Authority Seal

As of next month, Sonic comics will no longer carry the CCA seal. The CCA is a ratings authority which was established in the 1950s amid a witch hunt that targeted the comic book industry. Led by psychiatrist Frederick Werthem, the industry reacted by setting up the CCA to regulate itself and censor questionable content. This regulation nearly destroyed the industry and has since become more lax over the years. Archie Comics was one of the few companies that continued to use the CCA stamp on all of it’s publications.

So what does this mean for the Sonic comics? Not a whole lot, actually. Archie Comics Mike Pellerito tolds Newsarama “”The code never affected us editorially the way I think it did other companies,” he said. “You know, we aren’t about to start stuffing bodies into refrigerators or anything. We have to answer to Archie fans.”

So I guess you guys won’t have to look at that ugly stamp anymore!

  1. Wow, I completely forgot about that seal. It just became such a staple that my eyes passed right over it. Guess this means Sonic comics can finally get into some sick and twisted stuff! …or not.

  2. I believe ‘lacks’ should be ‘lax’ and ‘tolds’ should be ‘told.’ Sorry, that’s just the grammar nazi in me talking…

    Interesting news nonetheless. đŸ˜€

  3. “…and has since become more lacks over the years.”
Not to be a grammar nazi or anything, but I think you mean “lax” here đŸ˜‰

  4. Heh, I have to admit, I’m very surprised! But as they say, I don’t think the comics will go “darker and edgier” just cause they’re dropping the code. I trust them.

  5. Aw. I remember back when I was a kid I used to try and draw that seal on all of my old self-made comics, simply because I always saw it on the Sonic comics. I didn’t even know what it meant back then. Ah, youth…

  6. I am very interesting to see where this could lead Archie? Maybe they intend for the mega man comic coming up to have violence in it?(not necessarily decapitation, but good amounts of blood) I always thought they were all for that seal of approval. Sure proved me wrong, good on them.Less authority to have to deal with. Maybe they’ve got another project on the line that we dont know about it and it’s got too much darkness in it so they just got rid of it all together.Guess we’ll find out why next month.
