SoS: Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing Tournament Announced

Sonic fans get your driving gloves on for it is time to take the pedal to the metal for Summer of Sonic’s Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing Tournament. That’s right, we at Summer of Sonic will be giving you the chance to compete for the honour and priviledge of being the S&SASR World Champion – a nice little trophy to add to your Sonic collection and we may just have some other prizes in-store too so keep an eye out for a future announcement.

That’s all fine and dandy Shadzter but what format will the tournament be held in and just what version will you be using? Glad you asked! The tournament will be played on the Xbox 360 version. The qualifiers will be held in Time Trial mode where you will be challenged to earn the best time possible in a track we’ll be choosing at the event, the players with the best times (number of players to be determined) will be going through to the knockout finals later in the day where they will race for victory.

So if you’re up for some racing action then come and join me and the games staff at SoS’s gaming area, we look forward to seeing you!

More Sonic 4 Contest Loonies Dressed As Sonic

I must admit I’m now a bit bored of watching Sonic 4 contest entries that generally comprise of a helium-filled child giving a tour of their untidy bedrooms filmed on a 400 pixel camera. I’m also growing tired of the formula of grown men with dyed-blue hair running around in public receiving scornful looks from the elderly, supporting their views that all of today’s youth are doing drugs. Moans aside, there are still odd entries that are popping up that are making me smile. Although this film falls in the latter catagory, the badniks are really, really awesome, so watch it. TSS would like to mention we do not condone the use of pick axes to break open monitors.

I dare you to not laugh when the Buzzbomber gets a shoryuken to the face.

And because I’m not shameless at all: If you’re all tired out from these entries, why don’t you sit back, relax, and join me in the art corner…

Ian Flynn gives in depth response to Pender’s copyright claims

I’m sure all of you caught Ken Pender’s little announcement yesterday, regarding his newfound ownership of everything he created in the Archie book. It’s taken a little while, but Ian Flynn has finally delivered an in depth response to these claims, which you can find in full below. He posted this over at his forum, BumbleKing Comics:

I had wanted to let this ride out by itself and not mire BKC in paranoia and speculation, but given the amount of email, PMs and general broo-ha-ha around the net, I guess a little pat on the head and “everything will be fine” doesn’t quite cut it.

I still do not want this to blow itself out or proportion, so this is the go-to thread for info and news. There will be no discussion because there’s nothing to discuss, and all it will do is get everyone in a tizzy.

The Short Version

The Archie legal department is handling things. I’ve been told to keep writing as usual and to continue with our plans for the end of 2010/start of 2011. As I said before: no worries.

The Longer Version

Bear in mind that I don’t have all the information. All I’m going off of is my limited understanding of the ownership of things within the book and franchise. So unless Mr. Penders pulls a rabbit out of his hat, I feel fairly confident in my understanding of things.

1) Work-for-Hire – While I’m bound by my contract to not talk about my contract, I can say I’m work-for-hire. I’ve been on the book for five years (!!!) and I’m still freelance, part-time, on-the-side. All of my contributions to the book are for the book, and I’m paid for that.

All the stuff I came up with for “Young Salem” – Foreman Armstrong, Mortimer Destiny, the Lizarmyn, Horde Lord, concept, etc. – is Archie’s. I can’t do my own book under BKC about Mortimer and Felicia’s younger days.

Sonic-wise, I have a harder parallel to draw since I’ve spent more time using the content within the book and taking it in new directions. I suppose Thrash is the best example, lean as he is character-wise. He’s Archie’s. Plain and simple.

Everyone on staff (and I include us freelaners when I say this) has to sign that contract. So unless Mr. Penders’s contract was wildly different, he signed away those characters before he even created them.

2) SEGA – It is my understanding, as explained by Mr. Penders himself years ago on his forum – that ultimately SEGA owns everything in the book. If it’s associated with Sonic in the book, it is by extension SEGA’s. From my understanding, that is why BioWare could so freely emulate the Dark Legion for the Marauders.

I know there was some confusion elsewhere concerning rights to SatAM. As it was explained, SEGA owns the intellectual property – the characters and such – but DiC retains the rights to the animation. So you wouldn’t see SEGA reselling SatAM boxsets willy-nilly. Conversely, DiC wouldn’t be able to just up and make a new Sonic cartoon.

3) Reboot – Oh if I had a nickle for every time this word got tossed around. I’ve already begun material for 2011 and, as I said before, have been told there’s no need to change. Not that we’re blindly forging ahead, but that we have no reason to stop.

What would need a reboot, in the scenario that Mr. Penders somehow did win out in all this, is his plans. SEGA would not grant him the license to use Knuckles, I can flat-out tell you that with certainty. So right there the core component of the Echidna Lore – the main character – is gone.

He would not be able to use Angel Island, Mobius, or the Chaos Emeralds. Easy enough fix, though, right? It’s Skyhigh Island on Terra using the Magi-Gems for flight. (copyright, by the way. Double-tappsies, no take-backs).

But the entire Echidna cast is comprised of Knuckles knock-offs. Mr. Penders would be required to redesign the entire cast, unless he’s planning on trying to pass it off as parody (which I doubt).

By the time the property would be safe to touch, it would be unrecognizable. It’s not about Knuckles’s society or family. It’s not about echidnas (the kind we think of, at least). It would now be a sci-fi-lite story about some dudes on a flying island. That could be interesting in its own right, but it’s not the story I think Mr. Penders wants to tell, and it’s not the one the echidna fans want to read. So I’m not entirely sure what his greater thinking is here.

Again, take my words with a grain of salt. I’m not privy to absolutely everything going on. But from what I do know I am confident I – and you all – have nothing to worry about.

So relax, curl up with the latest SONIC book, and enjoy it while ignoring the storm outside. This too shall pass.

Sonic Game Marathon Starts Tonight

We reported back in May that gaming marathon group Bonus Stage Marathons were doing a three-day Sonic session trying to play through a veritable bargain bucket of Sonic games in aid of the Baltimore Humane Society.

That very session is set to start tonight at 11pm GMT. That’s midnight in the UK, and 7pm Eastern, 4pm Pacific in the US.

BSM also updated the list of games they’ll be playing to a bumper 31, with another five pencilled in. The new list includes a ROM hack, classics like Tails Adventure (oh yeah), and true horrors such as Sonic ’06 and Sonic Genesis.

SEGA Superstars Tennis PS3 Re-released In Compilation For Charity

A PS3 game box set has been released in the UK by charity Games Aid, the compilation consists of three games namely SEGA Superstars Tennis, Fuel and Tomb Raider Underworld donated by well known publishers SEGA, Codemasters and Eidos. All money raised by sales of the compilation will be donated straight to Games Aid who will distribute the money to various charities.

You may have never heard of GamesAid as they’re a new charity representing the games industry, here’s some info from their ‘About’ page on their website –

Rationale
GamesAid is a new UK video games industry based charity. It distributes funds to a diverse range of charities; it is a means of giving something back on behalf of the industry.

GamesAid acts as a broker of charitable activity on behalf of the industry, taking advice from all sectors. It is a non trading body. The charity is administered by Trustees, who operate on a fixed term basis. It is formally run by a chairman, who is also on a fixed term.

GamesAid is a children and young people’s charity.

Scope
Funds will predominantly be used to support children’s charities in the UK, with limited application for overseas causes; for education, health, housing and social welfare. Funds may also be deployed for career guidance and sport. Where possible, there will be some form of technology/interactive play element, but that is not a funding stipulation.

Funds can only be raised for Registered Charities.

The charities supported by GamesAid are more likely to be small-to-medium sized, rather than the better-funded larger ones.

Source of funds
Monies are to be raised through a number of routes including, but not limited to:

•Industry activities, such as social or sporting events
•Individual and corporate donations and memberships
•Game packs / titles (if appropriate)

The compilation is available in all good game retailers for the RRP of £39.99 though many retailers like Zavvi are selling it for as little as £27.95 if you’re not able to donate that much. Hopefully the compilation will raise some well needed funds for the various charities involved and bring new audiences to the three games in the compilation, SEGA Superstars Tennis’ online multiplayer modes could do with a bit more life in them.

Thanks to Gnasher for the heads up!

Sonic Colours Wii To Support Classic Controller & GameCube Controller

Nintendo of America have put up a product page for Sonic Colours Wii on the Wii’s U.S. Nintendo Channel which reveals Classic Controller and GameCube Controller support for the game, so those not keen on the motion controls set for the game such as drifting with the Nunchuk will have two traditional control options. Lets just hope Nintendo of America aren’t accident prone with their Nintendo Channel like Nintendo Europe, Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing’s EU Nintendo Channel page still to this day claims the game supports the GameCube Controller which we know isn’t supported.

The EU Nintendo Channel doesn’t have Sonic Colours listed yet but we’ll keep an eye out. Are you happy Sonic Team have given players a control choice? Discuss in the comments.

Many thanks to chaoscontrol14 at the SSMB for the photo.

Ex-Archie Writer Ken Penders Claims Copyright to Archie Characters & Stories

Ken Penders, as most die-hard Archie readers will know, is one of the more prolific writer/artists to have contributed to the Sonic the Hedgehog Archie comic universe over the years. However it has come to light today that Penders, in a statement on his website, will be pursuing copyright claims to the stories and characters he has been responsible for creating in the past. For those who don’t follow Archie comics – this is a substantial amount of material, not only including popular characters such as Julie-Su and Geoffrey St. John, but a large amount of the Sonic & Knuckles story arcs. Penders also claims that plotlines used in the Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood title were adapted from his works.

To quote the statement on Penders’ Web page:

As for how it affects the SONIC THE HEDGEHOG titles published by Archie Comics, while it does not prevent them from publishing the SONIC series, they are not allowed to use any of my characters, concepts or stories without further discussion with my representatives. For now, they cannot reprint any of my stories in any media whatsoever, nor can they use any of my characters. Julie-Su, Geoffrey St. John, Hershey, Rob O’ the Hedge, Lien-Da, the Dark Legion along with the rest of the characters and concepts I created – including the alternative universes and future timeline – cannot appear in the series.

This could potentially affect a large number of factors in the future of the comic’s publishing, as many editions of the Archie Archives books as well as current and future story arcs, currently being written by Ian Flynn include works Penders claims property of.  Penders also states he is seeking intellectual property advice from an LA-based attorney, and also warns of cease and desist letters being issued to anyone using these characters and concepts without permission.

This is of course not the first time there has been ill feeling between Penders and Archie Comics, with Penders lashing out at Ian Flynn earlier this year.

What are your thoughts and feelings on this situation? Let us know in the comments!

You can read the rest of Penders’ statement on Ken Penders Official Website.

Again, I would like to request that comments keep in mind that both Ken, Ian and other writers and artists actively use and read the internet; out-an-out flaming and insults will be removed. Cheers! -T

Yet More SEGA Sonic 4 Tokyo Contest Entries

Upon announcement of this competition, I was expecting hundreds of video entries depicting people dressed in £39.99 Sonic the hedgehog costumes running around town centres. Yeah, they’re beginning to come out the woodwork now, but this one is a little more entertaining! I particularly love the liberation of the animals (very cleverly done), and the fight with Dr. Robotnik at the end.

I think this entry definitely has a shot at the grand prize. Oh, and do watch Robotnik’s drinking contest too: Drink responsibly kids.

On the other hand…there’s Sonic Turkey. I’m so confused.

cdrom1019’s Trip To GameWorks

SSR DJ cdrom1019 recently visited SEGA’s Las Vegas GameWorks arcade and managed to grab some exclusive inside footage for TSS, something the management don’t normally allow but kindly made an exception for us. The photo’s and video are taken on a mobile phone camera so the quality isn’t great but those who have never been to a GameWorks or live outside the U.S. where they aren’t available should get a good glimpse of what’s on offer. If reports going around indicating SEGA are closing all of their GameWorks arcades are true then this is a good time to take a look before they’re shut down and if you live near a GameWorks but have never been then maybe this tour will persuade you to visit while you still have the chance.

Check out the photo’s and video links below –

Probably the Best Sonic 4 Tokyo Contest Entry So Far…

OK, so while I’m still piecing together my entry for this SEGA Sonic 4 Tokyo contest, I’ve been keeping a keen eye on youtube to see what my competition is like. I hadn’t seen any entries that particularly stood out, but there again, I am expecting the best entries to appear closer to the deadline. Then I saw this. missbluesonicspeed has put together a charming little video entailing her years of Sonic memories and dedication to Sonic, as well as going out and spreading the word via the means of Chaos Emerald cupcakes.

If this doesn’t make the US top 10 entries I will be very, very surprised. Good luck to you!

Sonic 4 Gets Fantastic Reception at SGC

This video was taken at ScrewAttack’s Game Convention during their Iron Man Tournament. The last game was a surprise and was revealed to be Sonic 4. What’s more surprising to me is the huge crowd reaction.  I’m glad to see such a positive reaction for this game.

Sonic Colours Wii Footage From Japan Expo

[dailymotion]http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xdwyoq_koopa-tv-demo-sonic-colours-je-2010_videogames#from=embed?start=2[/dailymotion]

Koopa TV have recorded some footage of Sonic Colours on Wii at Paris’s annual Japan Expo event, the demo appears to be the same one on display at E3 a couple of weeks back so nothing really new is shown but this time of course the demo is open for the public to try. I don’t understand French but the player looks to be sucked in and enjoying the game. We’ll keep an eye out for more footage and any impressions that may appear out of the event.

New Sonic Colours Screens & Art

Courtesy of Spindash.de we have some new screenshots for both the Wii and DS versions of Sonic Colours aswell as 3 new pieces of artwork. The screens show us more of Sweet Mountain Zone and Tropical Resort Zone, no new stages are shown. Some of the images you may recognise from magazine previews but I’m sure you’ll welcome them in their larger size and better quality. Though the Sonic and Wisp group art is new, the Sonic render itself was used on official Japanese Sonic site Sonic Channel back in 2008(thanks for the heads up ENVY16).

Could Kinect be causing some trouble for the games development? Stories have been going around the net since E3 regarding the multiplayer capabilities of the device with most saying it only performs well with 2 players at one time, SEGA representatives that were playing the Sonic Free Riders demo at their E3 booth were only showcasing the single player and 2 player split screen modes despite Xbox.com’s now previous claim of support for up to 4 players.

Judging by these changes we can only guess that SEGA were aiming for 4 player split-screen but the device couldn’t handle all of the players actions too well but why would possible changes to online multiplayer numbers have to be made? We’ll keep an eye out for any clearance on this and report back.

Nintendo of America Open Sonic Colours Product Pages

Nintendo of America have opened their product pages for Sonic Colours(or Colors as it’s called there since it’s American) and interestingly they have the the number of players for both versions down as ‘To be determined’, so could we be seeing a multiplayer mode announced sometime in the future? The pages reaffirm both games will support Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection though they don’t list the features available but folks keeping tabs will know that SEGA revealed a short while back that the games will have online leaderboards. The pages list an Holiday 2010 release for both versions which fits in with SEGA’s Late 2010 date. Everything else available has already been seen but still it’s intriguing to see the no. of players hasn’t been decided which opens speculation as to what kind of multiplayer modes could be being implemented and what characters could appear were the feature added to the games. Let us know your thoughts and ideas in the comments.

TSS Super Happy Hedgehog Moments: The Winners!

So last week we ran a day competition where we asked you guys to recount your favourite Sonic memories to snag yourself some merch from the heaving pile of goodies I’ve got lying in the merch depot. Well, as always with these contests it was difficult, but we’ve finally managed to choose 10 winners who each nab themselves some delectable Sonic Schnit!

ARCHIE ARCHIVES # 12 WINNER: Scruffy!
Ah man Scruffy, I had a cry too! Scruffy described the heartbreak of when Sonic had to leave Uncle Chuck behind in the SatAM episode “Ultra Sonic”, and never got to see later episodes! No closure…oh the humanity! Luckily they did in the end though, so all’s well! And just in case Scruffy feels like a little blast from the past, they’ve now got a copy of the Archie Archives! Uncle Chuck…*sniff*.

ARCHIE ARCHIVES # 12 WINNER:BlueHedgehog92!
BlueHedgehog92 reminded us of what it is truely like to be a child again by telling the tale of receiving a Dreamcast for Easter…that’s a damn big easter egg for sure! I know it’s not Easter now, but hopefully this will keep them tided over until Christmas!

SONIC STICKER ALBUM & STICKERS WINNER: Staples!
Staples made us laugh with their description of their playground game Sonic tag…we sure hope you’re a girl if you were always Amy though (Unless you carry a mallet around with you!) Well now you can swap stickers at leisure on your lunch break with this nice little prize!

JAZWARES 3″ SONIC FIGURE WINNER: Fred!
Fred knows exactly how to win competitions when it comes to pandering to my soft spots…and boy do I have one for the US Sonic CD soundtrack! Thanks for reminding everyone just how atmospheric it is! …and have a Sonic!

JAZWARES 3″ SONIC BLACK KNIGHT FIGURE WINNER: Tyoshi!
Arrrgghhh! Take this Crisis City! IT’S NO USE. Tyoshi’s decimation of their Sonic the Hedgehog ’06 disc reminded us that not all of our memories are remembered for the right reasons…but you know, what doesn’t kill us only makes it stronger. So Tyoshi…you know what’d make Sonic games better? LETZ GIV HIM A SORD! Congratulations :3

JAZWARES 3″TAILS FIGURE WINNER: Jade W-C!
Continuing on from the theme above, I’m sure you’ll all have encountered the “barrel of doom” from Sonic 3. Jade certainly has, and we heard their story of their trials and tribulations. But hey…if you’ve got Tails…why don’t you just get him to fly you up? You don’t have Tails you say? Well here you go!

JAZWARES 5″ SONIC BLACK KNIGHT FIGURE WINNER: Sapphire!
Apparently Sapphire’s brother has a habit of gene splicing and creating horrible hybrid Sonic-character creatures. Knuckles Shrimp will truely haunt this collector for the rest of his life. Do you think Sonic with a sword will be able to fend for himself? We sure hope so!

SONIC T-SHIRT WINNER: ForeverSonic!
ForeverSonic reminded us here at TSS what a wonderful way to meet new friends Sonic the Hedgehog is. It doesn’t matter if you’re at a convention or online – it’s always great to talk to like-minded hog-fans. Thanks for reminding us of the true meaning of Christm…I mean…have a T-Shirt!

SONIC T-SHIRT WINNER: Flint!
Flint gave us a heart-felt account of remembering bygone days of being a devoted Sonic fan, triggered when they heard an old favourite track. It reminded us at TSS that Sonic music really is the soundtrack to our lives, and that Sonic isn’t just a videogame character to a great deal of us. We hope by wearing your victory spoils you can remember more fond memories!

SONIC & SEGA ALL-STARS RACING NINTENDO DS GAME WINNER: Sonic Toast!
The Power of Teamwork is at the heart of Sonic Heroes…but years before that Sonic Toast and his bestest buddy were always looking out for each other…and they were even brave enough to rescue Sonic when they were just kids! Ok, ok…it was a Sonic toy, but Sonic Toast’s story was warm enough to warm the cockles of the hearts of even the coldest badniks. Thanks for sharing, and we hope you’ll have many great adventures with your new game (and your friends too!)

Competition winners please email your postal addresses (and your usernames so I know who is who!) to the competition address tbird[at]sonicstadium.org, and we’ll get your prizes out to you as soon as possible!

Thank you to everyone else who shared their memories with us – we’re all full of nostalgia now! Remember if you didn’t win anything this time, there’s always another competition around the corner!
