Seems like the upcoming release of Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II is going to be much more significant than we thought, if recent rumours are to be believed. Apparently, the game will allow for cross-play between Nintendo Gamecube and Microsoft Xbox players.
The news comes from RPG fansite PSO World, which kind of buried its lede by reporting on the JATE (Japan’s Approval Institute for Telecommunications Equipment) certifying the Nintendo Gamecube’s modem peripheral before casually dropping this note:
“On top of that, it seems Sega has announced that the GameCube and X-Box versions of Phantasy Star Online will be able to communicate with each other; allowing people from both camps to possibly team up and save your people!”
There doesn’t appear to be any formal confirmation from SEGA or Sonic Team about this, and the source appears to be a tip-off from PSO World reader ‘Darrin’, so I think it’s safe to say that we should take this with a huge pinch of salt. But, wouldn’t it be awesome for Nintendo and Microsoft fans to play together in the vast online universe that is Phantasy Star Online?
