Destructoid Streaming Sonic Colours For Charity [ENDED]

UPDATE: Sonic Colours stream is now over./UPDATE END

Destructoid’s Jesse Cortez will be holding a 24 hour-long special video game stream for the Extra Life charity fundraiser today and during the “Speed Run Challenge” segment of the show Cortez will be streaming the Comic-Con demo of Sonic Colours (Wii version), which as you may have seen includes portions of the Tropical Resort, Sweet Mountain and Planet Wisp stages. This part of the show should be played around 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM (PST), which is 01:00am-04:00am GMT in the UK, so we advise you guys get some sleep during the day if you want to join in. All Cortez asks of you in return for this event is that you pay a donation, which will go to the UC David Children’s Hospital.

Here’s a statement about the event from Jesse Cortez himself:

Hi I’m Jesse Cortez and this year I’m raising money and awareness for my local Children’s Miracle Network hospital, UC Davis Children’s Hospital.
On October 16th, 2010 I’ll attempt to play video games for 24-hours straight, and I’ve asked you to come by in hopes that you’ll support me by giving just $1.00 per hour ($24 total).
Your donation is tax-deductible and 100% of your gift goes to help heal sick kids, here in Sacramento, CA.
This Fall, my fellow Extra Life gamers are going to make miracles happen for kids. I can’t do that without your support. My goal is to raise $5,000.00.
This is DtoidSF’s official gamer account! Let’s raise some money for charity!
Thank you for your time, support, and participation.

Orchestral Sonic Medley to Feature on Video Games Live CD & DVD Releases

Those of you fortunate enough to have made it to one of the many worldwide live performances of Video Games Live, an orchestral showcase of some of the greatest suites from classic video game titles hosted by Tommy Tallerico and Jack Hall, may have had the opportunity to experience the magical rendition of the Staff Credits from Sonic the Hedgehog 1.

According to Destructoid, fans of the show can expect a CD and DVD release of the show performed recently by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in New Orleans. Alongside the Sonic Medley, the CD and DVD will also feature music from Zelda, Super Mario, Halo and a rocking version of One Winged Angel from Final Fantasy VII, complete with Tommy rockin’ out on his axe. The CD run time is currently pipped at 75 minutes for the CD, so you’re really getting as much as they can shove on there! The DVD will include over 3 hours of bonus material and behind the scenes footage in addition to the 100-minute performance.

Video Games Live: Level 2 will be released State-side on October 19th, 2010 – so far there are no details on prices or a worldwide release – but I guess there’s always the option to import!

If you haven’t heard the medley before, check out this video from their London Hammersmith performance…

…and if you haven’t seen me on stage making a fool of myself that year, enjoy this video. Yes, Tommy is wearing my hat. No, I didn’t win.

Destrutoid Speaks Out Against Whining Sonic Fans

Jim Sterling at Destructiod, like many people in the online community, has had it with the perpetual complaints from video game “fans”. In two of his recent articles published over the last day, he specifically singles out the current responses to Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1. Jim tackles a lot of the complaints that have so far been made about Sonic 4:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — Sonic was never about speed. Sure, speed was a factor, but it was there as a gameplay reward, not a gameplay substitute. The focus was on level design, and you’d get short sections of rails-like speed as little exhilarating treats throughout the game. Go play the first three Sonic games again and try to tell me that it was about speed. Compare Sonic 3 to Sonic 4 and try to tell me that Sonic is “too slow.”

Then there are other arguments. Petitions for Sonic to be redesigned so that he looks exactly like his 16-bit counterpart. People going so far as to criticize the fact that Sonic has some color in his eyes, or that his legs are too long. Once again, this is a game people have wanted for a long time, and as soon as they get it, they start finding other things to moan about.

You can read the full article at Destructoid.

Not only this, it turns out that there are some generating petitions that involve buying Sonic 1 on Sonic 4 launch day (A very original idea, of course – see: Rage Against the Machine for Christmas No. 1 ), effectively telling SEGA they want a remake of the original rather than something new.

So, what is your opinion then? Is Jim right? Should supposed fans who don’t like what they’ve seen of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 so far shut up? Perhaps if the series is so far gone in your opinion, maybe you should stop playing the games…or as Jim puts it “Maybe just shut up about everything and try to enjoy something.”

Destructoid Takes a Look Back at Sonic

Jim Sterling of Destructoid is a funny man.  His video series, “The Videogame Show What I’ve Done,” is the perfect parody of bad YouTube video game reviews, right down to the Windows Movie Maker titles.  In this episode, Sonic stops by to take a look at his past games.

Stray observations:

  • “Sonic the Hedgehig is gaming.”
  • I really want to play “Sonic Charonicles.”
  • “I was Unleashed as fuck, son.”
